Hanover AD Lynn Hall will retire at the end of the academic year. Hall: "It has been an honor to serve my alma mater for the past 37 years. I will certainly miss my colleagues and the student athletes, but I won't be far away in retirement and will have opportunities to cheer for the Panthers. There are exciting things ahead for Hanover College and I know the athletics department will continue to thrive under new leadership." Hanover is in the process of hiring a new VP for Athletics. SCIAC Commissioner Jennifer Dubow lays out the priorities for the DIIICA as president, with the group looking to assist membership with real challenges like officiating and athletic training. On the bigger picture: You're looking at the ever-changing landscape of Division III and what's coming out of NIL, how is that really going to impact us? Is that going to impact our revenue stream? Do we have to start looking at a DIII network? What are our media value rights? How can we make sure, if something really changes drastically at a Division I level, that we can still provide our student athletes with the experience that we want to? And I haven't figured out those answers yet at all. But it's certainly something that we're continuing to talk about in our room. […] I think we have to do a better job of showing our worth, and I think there is an appetite to see our product, whether it is more consistent streaming deals. It doesn't have to look exactly like these DI contracts, but I think it's taken us a little bit to understand our worth.” Further: “I think if we're going to be sustainable, we have to find additional revenue streams for Division III. I think it's a little naive to think that in 10 years Division I is going to look exactly the same, and thus our budget is going to look exactly the same as we take a very small percentage from their Turner contract. Again, I'm not smart enough yet to figure out what it's going to look like in 10 years, but I just think we'd be doing ourselves a disservice if we didn't think it was going to look different and so we need to be a little bit more proactive in the space than reactive.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker pens a letter to student-athletes encouraging them to give feedback to his recent player compensation proposal. He writes: “This proposal is not set in stone. It's a working document that requires continued dialogue. It needs feedback and engagement from those this would directly affect — you. I am pleased the memo has kicked open the doors of conversation and that I've had many reach out with ideas and alternatives. … College sports face many challenges, and while my proposal will help address some of those, the NCAA cannot address each one alone. We must continue to partner with Congress to prevent student-athletes from being considered employees of a school and must have the authority to make nationwide rules without endless legal challenges. I am proud that so many student-athletes are joining us in our work with Congress.” Baker adds: “Consider the memo a conversation starter. These topics have been discussed ad nauseum in press conferences, locker rooms and school offices across the country. Open social media, turn on the TV or listen to members of Congress, the debate is constant. It's now time to do something. Make your voice heard and be part of the solution that shapes the future of college sports.” More. (link)

The MASCAC will add Women’s Ice Hockey as its 19th conference sport in 2024-25, becoming the ninth Women’s Hockey league. The conference will begin with five teams in ‘24-’25 before Salem State joins in 2025-26, with the MASCAC to earn AQ status for the 2027-28 season. Commissioner Angela Baumann: “Women’s ice hockey is a sport that is rapidly growing and we are excited to cultivate that growth in the MASCAC. The addition of women’s ice hockey will bring great excitement, enhanced visibility and most importantly, new opportunities for our student-athletes and member institutions going forward." (link)

The Washington Post’s Dave Sheinin and Emily Giambalvo take a look at the declining rate of youth football participation nationwide and note that “boys in the most conservative, poorest states continue to play high school tackle football at higher rates than those in wealthier and more politically liberal areas. … And while precise data about football’s racial makeup is hard to come by, the demographics appear to be gradually shifting. Among kids and teens, White and Black males are playing tackle football at declining rates, while Hispanic boys increasingly take up the sport. In college, the proportion of White players is declining, and that of Black players rising, at faster rates than national demographic changes.” They also note that “high-schoolers in states that voted for former president Donald Trump in 2020 played football last year at a rate roughly 1.5 times as high as those in states that went for President Biden. … Poll results revealed that liberals are increasingly more likely to discourage children from playing football, while conservatives are just about as likely to recommend the sport now as in 2012.” Skidmore sociology professor Andrew M. Linder: “There seems to be a very disturbing possibility that who your dad voted for [in the presidential election] could influence your risk for a very serious [football-related] ailment or injury.” While a September report indicated high school football participation was up 5% since 2021, it remains down 17% since 2006. Since 2013, high school participation has fallen in every state except Alabama and Mississippi, where it is up 18% and 20%, respectively. Lots more in the full analysis. (link)

+ Wabash has received a $25M, five-year grant from the Lilly Endowment, the largest foundation gift the college has ever received. (link)

+ The Department of Education has released details on the FAFSA rollout, noting that the previously announced December 31 deadline represented a “soft launch period,” during which officials will monitor for technical issues, field concerns from families and make last-minute tweaks. The department will also periodically pause the process to allow students already working on FAFSAs to continue doing so; however, new forms cannot be started. The department clarified that “full processing” of forms will not begin until late January. (link)
