NCAA President Charlie Baker pens a letter to student-athletes encouraging them to give feedback to his recent player compensation proposal. He writes: “This proposal is not set in stone. It's a working document that requires continued dialogue. It needs feedback and engagement from those this would directly affect — you. I am pleased the memo has kicked open the doors of conversation and that I've had many reach out with ideas and alternatives. … College sports face many challenges, and while my proposal will help address some of those, the NCAA cannot address each one alone. We must continue to partner with Congress to prevent student-athletes from being considered employees of a school and must have the authority to make nationwide rules without endless legal challenges. I am proud that so many student-athletes are joining us in our work with Congress.” Baker adds: “Consider the memo a conversation starter. These topics have been discussed ad nauseum in press conferences, locker rooms and school offices across the country. Open social media, turn on the TV or listen to members of Congress, the debate is constant. It's now time to do something. Make your voice heard and be part of the solution that shapes the future of college sports.” More. (link)

Asked about Florida State being left out of the College Football Playoff, NCAA President Charlie Baker notes the decision is up to the teams. “The teams that are involved in this, the schools that are involved in it, they make their own rules, right? And they should decide what they think makes the most sense.” Baker does acknowledge the Seminoles’ exclusion was a “punch in the gut” and adds: “I’m glad they’re going to 12 teams next year. I’m hoping when they go to 12, we won’t have that kind of challenge. We’ll probably have something that happens between 12 and 15 or whatever.” Baker also talked with the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker about the NCAA’s bureaucracy and said: “As odd as it might be for me to say this coming out of government, the NCAA’s governance structure is ponderous.” In speaking with members of the 97 conferences across all three divisions, Baker says there is a desire for a more streamlined, less complicated system. “What I need to do is create a process that people feel like they’re being heard, which I agree is always important given my own background, and then move and go and see where it takes you.” More from Baker and Baker. North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham joins the Ovies + Giglio podcast and describes his reaction to NCAA President Charlie Baker’s player compensation proposal: “The day it came out, for about two hours, I lost my mind and ran all the math on it and then I started to really think about it…I said are we not getting traction with Capitol Hill? Are we not getting traction with the schools? Are we not getting traction with the conferences and therefore I'm going to throw a grenade in the middle of the room and walk out and see what happens? And that's really what I concluded, that he is really trying to create a conversation about the future of college athletics.” Cunningham notes that following Baker’s proposal to the letter would cost UNC upwards of $12M “and that's before we buy NIL for students, so no telling what that cost would be.” More from Cunningham. Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich summarizes arguments during the second day of the NLRB’s hearing on whether USC football and basketball student-athletes should be classified as employees. A lawyer for the NCAA asked former USC running back Brandon Outlaw a series of questions designed to “draw similarities between requirements of track athletes and FB players,” which Christovich notes is “important [because] this case tries to say FB + basketball players are employees, but not necessarily other sports. Similarities the NCAA lawyer has established so far: that you had to attend class, you had rules and schedules, you traveled. Differences: USC's system of punishments and surveillance (like the class monitors) seems to be much more intense than [Virginia’s, where Outlaw previously played].” The NCAA’s attorney also asked about the transfer portal to “establish that the NCAA was not involved in Outlaw's joining of the USC football team. Outlaw entered the transfer as a track athlete, and switched to FB when he got to USC. He agreed that there was no NCAA-related process to switch sports.” During redirect, an NLRB lawyer asked Outlaw about weigh-ins to reestablish the “required nature of not just participating in the weigh-in, but also doing what coaches say to reach optimal weight. … NLRB's lawyer is engaging in a line of questioning to establish that the optimal weight suggested by a coach was not about an athlete being a normal, healthy person for their age/weight/BMI. They were about reaching a level of on-field performance.” Also from Christovich: “Most interesting note from re-cross from USC lawyer: Outlaw has a LinkedIn profile, but he does not list playing football for USC as one of his jobs. (Of course, I'm thinking, is that because he doesn't believe USC is employment or is it bc it's not currently CALLED employment?)” More. (link)

The Ivy League announces the addition of a postseason wrestling tournament beginning in the 2024-25 season. Currently, the six Ivy schools that sponsor wrestling (Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Penn and Princeton) compete in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA). Beginning in 2024-2025, the Ivy League institutions will compete in the Ivy League Wrestling Tournament to determine automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament. Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris: “This new postseason event will provide an unforgettable experience for our student-athletes and is a terrific way to further showcase the sustained national strength of Ivy League athletics. … We want to acknowledge the EIWA membership and the long history of success that our programs have benefited from over the many decades of their affiliation.” (link)

Less than a day before the early football signing period starts, Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel observes the top 10 recruits on Rivals’ list are committed to 10 different schools, something that hasn’t happened since Rivals began ranking recruits in 2006. Wetzel acknowledges that without QB Dylan Raiola’s flip from Georgia to Nebraska it wouldn’t have happened this year either, but adds that, overall, the “talent is spreading out, at least a little. … Then there is the transfer portal, which has altered how talent is acquired but has also proven to be a boon for non-traditional powers because experienced players are seeking playing time more than just jumping to the best team.” For those coaches and ADs who bemoaned that NIL would only further separate the haves and the have-nots, Wetzel suggests they should’ve listened to the economics professors on their campuses. “Had they, they could have learned about the Invariance Principle, a concept dating to 1956 by economics professor Simon Rottenberg, who concluded that Major League Baseball’s financial efforts to limit how talent moved within the league didn’t actually create competitive balance.” Sports economist Andy Schwarz: “Simon Rottenberg’s Invariance Principle remains undefeated. The link between wage fixing and competitive balance is not generally supported by the field of economics.” As Wetzel puts it: “Georgia or Alabama might have the money to win some bidding wars, but no one can win all of them.” (link)

Alabama topped college football by averaging 7.12M viewers per game in 2023, according to the Nielsen ratings. The Tide were followed by Ohio State (6.05M), Colorado (6M), Georgia (5.9M), Michigan (5.61M), Tennessee (4.57M), Oregon (4.43M), Texas (4.26M), Florida State (4.16M) and Notre Dame (4.15M). Fox Sports President of Insights & Analytics Michael Mulvihill points out, however, that this is a “flawed analysis” which “penalizes Big Ten schools for being on Nielsen-rated [Big Ten Network], which is silly.” He also notes it includes conference championship games and fails to account for game duration. “Looking at regular season games on broadcast or ESPN and weighting properly, Ohio State beat Bama by over 15%.” Action Network’s Brett McMurphy notes that “only seven of the top 32 viewed teams by Nielsen’s ratings finished with a losing record: No. 3 Colorado, No. 17 Florida, No. 20 Texas A&M, No. 24 Nebraska, No. 27 Navy, No. 30 Washington State and No. 32 Mississippi State.” (link, link)

UCLA-Boise State drew 2.38M viewers to ABC for the LA Bowl, making it the most-watched matchup during the first week of bowl games, followed by Appalachian State-Miami (OH) (1.95M, ABC), Florida A&M-Howard (1.51M, ABC), Ohio-Georgia Southern (1.2M, ESPN), Jacksonville State-Louisiana (1.09M, ESPN), Texas Tech-Cal (1.02M, ESPN) and Fresno State-New Mexico State (845K, ESPN). Meanwhile, the North Dakota State-Montana FCS semifinal brought in 790K viewers to ESPN2, while South Dakota State-Albany brought in 476K, also on ESPN2. (link); Stats Perform’s Craig Haley compares the FCS semifinal numbers to last year’s when Incarnate Word at North Dakota State (a Friday night) averaged 1.05M viewers and Montana State at SDSU (a Saturday afternoon) averaged 598K. KWTX offers a look at the progress being made on Baylor’s new $212M Foster Pavilion, the future home of its men’s and women’s basketball teams. Bears Assoc. AD for Capital Projects and Championships Henry Howard: “In the bowl, the game day experience will be elite. All of this will be complete, lighting, sound, video, basketball goals, bench, team chairs. Once the guests get in here, I don’t think they’ll notice anything that is normal for a normal game day.” The arena is set to open on January 2. (link)

Now this is creative: The Big Sky and Summit Conference have revealed the scoring system that will be used to determine the winner of the inaugural Big Sky-Summit Challenge, which is now just weeks away. The leagues will be playing for a combined trophy, taking both men’s and women’s hoops results into consideration equally from 36 total games. Home victories will be worth one point while road wins will earn the victors 1.5 points. The first tiebreaker will be the total margin of victory. If there is still a tie, the two commissioners will compete in an arm-wrestling contest at the Final Four to determine the champion, which is possibly the most awesome sentence that has ever been written in D1.ticker history.
