The Seattle Times’ David Gutman takes a behind the scenes look at how Washington’s decision to leave the Pac-12 played out drawing from emails & text messages involving UW President Ana Mari Cauce. Included is an exchange with then-Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne which seems to indicate the Cardinal were committed to voting San Diego State into the Pac-12 once a new media deal was reached, which was “essentially unanimous.” There’s also a text exchange with former Huskies & current USC AD Jen Cohen after Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff initially introduced the new media deal with Cohen telling Cauce: “This isn’t going to work. He went backwards on benefits of this since Friday. It's not close. This is bad!” Lots more, including Cauce’s balancing interests on August 3rd of trying to keep a Pac-12 option viable, while also reaching out to Big Ten peers. Fascinating read. (link)

Southern Miss AD Jeremy McClain points to a spring announcement with details on renovations coming to Reed Green Coliseum: “Timeline wise, we got one more approval in early next year that we have to check that box, and then we'll be able to share more information and actually share publicly renderings and what our timeline looks like. [...] We're doing as much as we can with our architects now before we get that final approval. We'll have a more ideal timeline once we get to that point in the spring, but we're pushing as hard as we can.” McClain also noted the Golden Eagles have raised $9M this year, a department record. “I really thought we could do this here. I’m just in a different seat than I thought I would be in.” That’s former McNeese State Men’s Basketball HC turned Cowboys AD Heath Schroyer on the vision he imagined upon taking the coaching job in 2018. The Cowboys are off to a 10-2 start this season, their best 12-game start in 51 years, thanks in part to new MBB HC Will Wade. Schroyer: “This athletic department needed a shot of adrenaline and Will Wade came here and gave it to us. I knew we could do this here if we had the right people in place. What I’m really happy for is this community, this university. We have all been through a lot and we needed this.” Outgoing McNeese President Daryl Burckel: “I did think this all was possible. I never thought it would be with Will Wade as head coach, but this is great for all of us. It builds a sense of excitement and accomplishment for everybody, which we all could use. It sells the university and helps the McNeese brand nationally.” (link)

Following the brawl after the 68 Ventures Bowl between Eastern Michigan and South Alabama, started when Eagles student-athlete Korey Hernandez appeared to sucker punch Jaguars student-athlete Jamarrien Burt, EMU AD Scott Wetherbee has issued a statement: “We strongly condemn the actions of some of the student-athletes on the EMU football team in the ugly incident that took place following last night's 68 Ventures Bowl. We are deeply upset and embarrassed by what happened. Their conduct does not reflect the great pride and high standards we place on the game and our program, and the expectations for good sportsmanship and exemplary conduct of student-athletes on and off the field. What happened was completely unacceptable. We apologize to the Eastern Michigan University community and to the South Alabama team and their fans.” South Alabama AD Joel Erdmann’s response, in part: “While we are disappointed in the incident that occurred following our team's victory, we are grateful to the leadership at Eastern Michigan University for taking ownership of the incident and reaching out to our leadership here at South Alabama to apologize and ensure us they will fully investigate the matter. We do not believe this incident is in any way reflective of the values of Eastern Michigan University or its football program. We hope this situation will not take away from the fact that the Jaguars are 68 Ventures Bowl Champions.” (link)

NFL Network Insider’s Ian Rapoport with updates on Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh’s future with the Wolverines: “Sources say Harbaugh, whose current deal runs through 2026, received an offer from Michigan for a 10-year, $125-million contract extension that would make him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football. Yet there is a caveat, and it's NFL-related. If he signed the deal -- which he has not yet done -- Harbaugh would agree not to entertain or accept an NFL job for the 2024 season. The NFL clause would be one season only, but that's apparently been enough to drag out the process. Michigan has also offered Harbaugh a far shorter deal worth about $11 million per year, sources say.” (link)

Collegiate Sports Connect analyzed user data regarding compensation expectations for more than 550 college sports industry professionals in its user base who list Business Operations as one of their primary areas of responsibility. While individual expectations varied, some common trends emerged. For instance, when compared to the same cohort of Development and Marketing professionals, earlier-career Business Operations professionals expressed similar compensation expectations, while the gap (and standard deviation) in salary expectations increased significantly starting with professionals with 10+ years of experience. For those with 10-12 years of experience, the 75th percentile expectation was 32% higher than the median and 67% higher than the 25th percentile expectation. Individuals with less than one year of experience expected, on average, a salary of $49K. Those with one to three years expected roughly $55K, those with four to six expected nearly $71K, those with seven to nine expected $93K, those with 10-12 expected $106K, those with 13-15 expected $131K, and those with 15+ years of experience expected $156K. To read the full report, you’ll need a Connect account, which is free to setup. (link)

MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher joined The Add Drop Podcast and says of the importance of MACtion: “It gives us something unique in college football, and that's unique windows. For years, no one had unique windows. Well, we now do on those dates. And it's funny, our ratings go up pretty significantly from a Saturday to a midweek game. Those sorts of things, it gives you a chance to really shine a spotlight. You know, go back a few years, we had a young man at Northern Illinois University. They were having a phenomenal season. A young man by the name of Jordan Lynch was the quarterback who had a great, great, great year. Well, it played out on national TV, he ends up being a finalist for the Heisman. I'm not sure that happens if we don't have those unique windows. … It's helped take what was a very good regional conference, and made us a national brand and a national conference. And our coaches speak to that with regards to how they can recruit. They can go into any home in the country and tell that mom and dad that if your son or daughter comes here, you're gonna get a chance to see him on national TV. Not everybody can do that.” Steinbrecher also notes that being in a league with fewer beat writers means schools need to reach out directly to consumers, whether through traditional or social media. “I’m looking for ways to measure that and talking to our people who are doing that. How are we collecting this data? How are we leveraging that data and using it to the benefit of our membership in our conference?” Full Q&A. (link)

Oregon Volleyball HC Matt Ulmer sat down with Coaches.wire’s Tai M. Brown from the AVCA Convention in Tampa to discuss his perspective on increased travel as a result of moving to the Big Ten as well as the transfer portal, NIL and more. On the topic of travel, Ulmer observes that “people want to complain about what’s happening, but I always think ‘What’s the alternative?’ For us is the alternative that we are going to just stay in the [Pac-12] but maybe have to cut sports? Would that have been better – to limit female student-athletes’ opportunities or male [opportunities]? To me that doesn't sound like a better opportunity than what's going on. Now, because of that are we going to have to travel more? We're going to have to travel more. But to me that is a better choice than limiting opportunity.” Lots more in the full interview. (link)

BOA Nutrition, which earlier this year signed NIL deals with North Carolina men’s basketball student-athlete Armando Bacot and Duke men’s hoops student-athlete Jeremy Roach, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The deals included equity ownership positions for Bacot and Roach at roughly 0.5% each, which BOA Nutrition CEO Jon Pritchett estimated at the time to be worth between $150K and $250K combined. According to its bankruptcy filing, BOA has accumulated more than 50 creditors and had just over $400,000 in assets with liabilities ranging between $1M and $10M, per The Triangle Business Journal’s Lauren Ohnesorge. LightShed Partners Co-Founder/TMT Analyst Rich Greenfield weighs in on the possible Warner Brothers-Paramount Global merger: “I think this entire sector is facing, really, an existential crisis. Linear TV is never getting better. Advertising is in secular decline. Cord-cutting is worse than these companies expected. Streaming losses are in the billions. I think this is really sort of an aha moment, inflection point, watershed moment you would call it for the entire industry where they're realizing there is no growth. They are in secular decline mode and … they don’t know what to do.” Greenfield goes on to say: “All of these companies are realizing next year is going to be a heck of a lot tougher. There are no green shoots in TV advertising. It is never, ever getting better. … The problem is putting these companies together doesn't fix the problem … the problem is they can’t compete with Netflix. They need to stop. They need to shut down these streaming services or scale them back dramatically. We wrote a big piece yesterday that the streaming strategies of these companies are flawed. We thought they could go all in and compete – they can’t. These companies need to change course and do it immediately.” More. (link)

The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy gets commentary from industry sources on Florida State’s gambit, including, “Criticize Florida State all you want, but they’re the first ones over the wall. If they can survive, then several other ACC schools will follow.” Another: “There’s no way the SEC and ESPN wants FOX and the Big Ten to plant a flag in Florida by adding FSU and Miami.” (link)

Crakes Media’s Patrick Crakes on if there’s riches at the end of the legal battle for Florida State: “There's no guarantee that economic rewards envisioned will be a lay up. Engines that power T1 media sports rights fees (Pay TV & Streaming) are either seeing reduced economic capacity or aren't spending as promised...Maybe not in 5 years but now for sure.” (link)

UC Santa Barbara AD Kelly Barsky has been named Chair of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Oversight Committee. Notable from the release: “Barsky's elevation to WBOC chair continues the momentous period of leadership for Big West basketball with commissioner Dan Butterly serving as the vice chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee. With the league now holding two of the six Oversight Committee leadership spots, The Big West's footprint on the national stage within NCAA basketball continues to flourish.” (link)

Former Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany joined the Navigating Sports Business podcast to discuss NIL, realignment, and the future of college sports. Delany also talks about what makes a successful commissioner, noting two recent hires from outside the industry – Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff and Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark – led to two very different outcomes. “It’s really hard because I've never really seen the demise of a major conference like that except for the WAC, and when you try to find causation you see a lot of variables. You don't know what's correlative and you don't know what's [causal]. In the case of Brett, he obviously did a great job of moving quickly, and he was from a part of the entertainment sports business that was the deal part. … He saw the need for stability more than the need for rich revenue or revenue growth, and I think that was the right call for him.” Regarding Kliavkoff, Delany notes the departures of USC and UCLA early on put him in a difficult situation. “It wasn't a goal of the Big 12 to compete media-wise with the SEC or the Big Ten, but it was I think the goal of George to do that, so he was probably more reluctant to make a status quo deal where the status quo deal at the Big 12 was viewed as good because it stabilized. … If the marching orders were to get the revenues up to the level or near the level of the Big Ten and SEC, well then he's got to be patient to do that and in the case of Brett I think stability was the watchword of the day.” Lots more. New Mexico State Football HC Jerry Kill has resigned and Aggies AD Mario Moccia announces Wide Receivers AC - and former UNLV HC - Tony Sanchez has been promoted to lead the program. Kill: “Firstly, I want to extend my sincere thanks to the New Mexico State administration… They've been invaluable in our achievements over the last two years. I also want to express my deep gratitude to the people of Las Cruces. Aggie Nation has been incredibly supportive, and I will always be thankful for the opportunity I was given to lead their team. This year has been tremendously difficult for me, and I gave it everything I had physically, mentally and emotionally. New Mexico State holds a special place in my heart as it marks the end of my journey as a head coach. While I'll remain involved with the Aggies, I recognize the need for a head coach with a lot of energy. Good luck to Coach Sanchez, the student-athletes and New Mexico State University.” (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz has the skinny on bowl bonuses for this week: Coastal Carolina’s Tim Beck ($200K) tops the list, followed by Georgia Tech’s Brent Key, USF’s Alex Golesh and Western Kentucky’s Tyson Helton, all at $50K and UTSA’s Jeff Traylor ($25K). Not only does South Alabama’s Kane Wommack get a $25K bowl bonus, with the Jaguars 68 Ventures Bowl win he also gets a $25K salary bump and automatic one-year extension that takes his deal through February of 2029. The additional year is worth $607,500 guaranteed, $810K possible; Speaking of extensions, Georgia State’s Shawn Elliott also picked up a $25K bonus, a $25K pay increase and a one-year extension for the Panthers’ win in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Elliott’s salary next year will be at least $782K; Oh we’re not done, Northern Illinois’ Thomas Hammock pockets $20K for the Camellia Bowl win and gets a year added onto his deal, which will now run through June of 2028 and pay him at least $760K, with $317,775 guaranteed. According to FootballScoop, LSU Offensive Coordinator Mike Denbrock had not yet signed his three-year, $1.8M/year extension with the Tigers, thus reducing his buyout from $1.4M to $375K and paving the way for his hire as Notre Dame’s new offensive coordinator. His deal with the Irish is of the four-year variety and worth approximately $9M guaranteed. (link)

Western Illinois AD Paul Bubb joined AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to reflect on four decades in college athletics and the evolution of his strategic thinking. Bubb, whose AD stops include Cal State Northridge, Idaho State, Maine and WIU, talks about the changes in the student-athlete and general student experience, the impact of the transfer portal and NIL and the ongoing cycle of conference affiliation and realignment. Bubb on the similarities between his time at Western and previous AD posts: “When I took over as athletic director [at Cal State Northridge], we were not in a conference, so we were looking for conference affiliation, which is interesting because at this point in my career at Western we were in a conference but to be honest I don't think it fit strategically with what we wanted to do. We just finished putting together a strategic plan which outlined what we believe we should be doing and [part] of that was conference affiliation. So, [we] made a move to a different conference. So, it's interesting, the start of my career I was dealing with conference affiliations…and at this point my career we're looking at the same issue.” More from ADU. (link)

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) on Thursday found that UEFA and FIFA ran afoul of the law by impeding the formation of a rival league, such as the Super League, through threats of suspensions and fines of member clubs. The ECJ noted that its decision doesn’t pertain specifically to the Super League but is rather a “general edict that these organizations and procedures restricting competition fail to comply with competition law, the European analog of U.S. antitrust law,” per Sportico’s Michael McCann, who notes the ECJ worried specifically about rules that “prevent any and all competition between the professional football clubs affiliated to the national football associations which are FIFA and UEFA members,” including with respect to media, intellectual property, marketing and other rights and the limiting of choices for consumers and fans. The ECJ also criticized FIFA and UEFA for failing to utilize a “framework of substantive criteria and detailed procedural rules which are suitable for ensuring that they are transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate.” McCann adds: “The ruling does not mean FIFA and UEFA can’t block the Super League or something else like it…but it does mean FIFA and UEFA need to apply a more transparent process that includes objective criteria and features specific reasoning and convincing logic.” UEFA says it has already adopted rules changes to create such a framework.
