Wofford is pausing the search process for its next AD until after the Board of Trustees meet in February. “Expectations are justifiably high when it comes to finding the next person to lead Wofford College through the complex landscape of NCAA D-I intercollegiate athletics.” Looks like retiring AD Richard Johnson will continue to lead the Terriers until a new AD is hired. Looking back on 2023, Sportico’s Michael McCann points to changes coming to college athletics as one key storyline of the entire sports industry. McCann: “Any case the NCAA warns could become a ‘death knell’ is worth close attention. That is true of In Re College Athlete NIL Litigation (a.k.a. House v NCAA), which alleges the NCAA and Power Five violated antitrust laws. [...] The NCAA could try to settle, but it would need to pay up. It’s unknown how the NCAA, conferences and member schools—and their insurance companies—would determine who pays what. This is the first case that could economically knock down the NCAA and the system of D-I college sports in irreparable ways. McCann goes on to note that a decision in the Dartmouth-NLRB situation is “expected any day” and “could end up being the legal petition that makes college athletes employees.” Another ruling expected any day is Johnson v. NCAA, while both USC-NLRB & Carter v. NCAA are both likely years off from the finish line. (link)

The Tampa Bay Times has a bunch of additional details on USF’s new on-campus football stadium, including the proposed square footage layout: “The 35,001 units labeled ‘spectator seating’ include 12,101 for bench seating, 6,940 for students and 9,992 for priority chairbacks. There are 20 loge boxes (four people apiece) and ‘living room box seating’ (10 boxes of eight lounge seats). The stadium club adds another 19,890 square feet for everything from lounge areas to concession stands and a “parents lounge” next to the family restroom. There’s also a field-level club (11,370 square feet) and party patio (8,875 square feet). Public restrooms cover another 27,550 square feet — 233 units for men, 282 for women and six for families. [...] The plan calls for 65 traditional cooking concession stands and 65 labeled ‘tradition non-cooking.’ A 4,000-square-foot kitchen and 3,000-square-foot commissary are also under the dining/retail section, along with a team store (2,500 square feet) and three novelty stands.” Notably, there’s also early plans for the TGH Center for Athletic Excellence that could open by 2026 with a new locker room, weight room, lounge, sports medicine, administrative & coaching offices, plus clinical space for Tampa General Hospital & lots more. The NCAA has issued nine extension of eligibility waivers and 38 season of competition waivers for Northwestern State football student-athletes who competed in more than four games during the shortened Demons season. Assoc. AD for Internal Affairs/Director of NCAA Compliance Dustin Eubanks: “We appreciate the NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement staff members working with us through the arduous process. They were with us every step of the way. With the circumstances surrounding this past season, we wanted to help our student-athletes as much as we could. We couldn't have asked for a better outcome and hope these student-athletes can move forward in a positive manner whether at Northwestern State or at another institution.” (link)

With multiple high profile Football HCs publicly advocating for revenue sharing with student-athletes, WSJ’s Rachel Bachman, Louise Radnofsky and Tom McGinty get perspectives from several HCs. LSU’s Brian Kelly says he is “in favor of beginning the conversation,” with NC State’s Dave Doeren being in favor of sharing revenue. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, who was previously a staunch opponent of revenue sharing, tells the trio he is in favor of “setting aside revenue to deliver to athletes after they graduate.” More, including perspectives from HCs that have already been featured in D1.ticker. Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin sounds off on the current football calendar: “Again, it’s a terrible system. No other — I wouldn’t think any other sports, professional sports, have ever set up a system where free agency starts while the season is still going. So it really makes no sense. You can leave, you can stay, you can go other places, coaches can call you and our season is still going. It would be like before the NFC or AFC playoffs start in a couple weeks, all of a sudden, hey, free agency the week before opens. So you can start recruiting other people’s players and fly them on trips and get them to transfer. So really, in a really bad system.” (link)

With the recent changes around multi-time transfers, On3’s Pete Nakos believes there will be a significant uptick in multi-time transfers starting this week. Nakos also reports that, per an NCAA spokesperson, the association is expected to review academic standards and transfer portal requirements at next month’s NCAA Convention. (link)

The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand believes ESPN’s direct-to-consumer offering may happen in 2024, but still believes 2025 is most likely, with an initial price point between $25-30 per month. SBJ’s John Ourand on the positioning of the World Wide Leader: “They’re well positioned. They're the most watched cable TV channel on the dial like they're the ones that can do it. I'm not sure if I see what the advantage is to be a first mover, in terms of just taking the channel direct-to-consumer, but Bob Iger, since he's been back, has been all over direct-to-consumer and and wants to own that, so that's part of the strategy. … But I'm still holding out that maybe at some point they're going to say let's protect this $2-3 billion profit that we're getting from the cable channels over here.” As for the possibility of selling a portion of ESPN for a partner or two, both believe that move may not happen in 2024. The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement and abusing the paper’s IP to train its AI software. Per the New York Times’ Michael Grynbaum and Ryan Mac: “The suit does not include an exact monetary demand. But it says the defendants should be held responsible for ‘billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages’ related to the ‘unlawful copying and use of The Times’s uniquely valuable works.’ It also calls for the companies to destroy any chatbot models and training data that use copyrighted material from The Times. […] The lawsuit could test the emerging legal contours of generative A.I. technologies — so called for the text, images and other content they can create after learning from large data sets — and could carry major implications for the news industry. The Times is among a small number of outlets that have built successful business models from online journalism, but dozens of newspapers and magazines have been hobbled by readers’ migration to the internet.” (link)
