Looks like San Diego has selected Parker Executive Search to assist with its process of hiring a new AD. Timeline wise, materials are due by the 2nd of February. Full job description here. (link) The D1.dossier for the position is also available, for those interested in leading the Toreros. Gardner-Webb AD Andrew Goodrich: “On the front end of the process, the information provided by D1.dossier saved me at least 12 hours of research time. I was able to use those hours to not only prepare my interview responses, but also to continue to do my current job at a high level. Undoubtedly, it helped me land my first AD opportunity, and furthermore, on the back end of the process, the D1.dossier information has helped me to be very effective the first thirty days in the chair.” (link)

Sportico’s Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams welcome College Football Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock to Sporticast where the trio cover some good ground on the CFP’s media rights negotiations, the professionalization of college athletics & modern fandom. Hancock on the franchise’s media rights process: “It’s positive. Lots of exchanges. Lots of interest in this event. We feel good about where we are. [...] We’re going to do very well. [...] We don’t believe they’re (money vs. reach) mutually exclusive.” More. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde was in Peru when Florida State announced its gambit, provides commentary on the state of college athletics in context against life high up in the Andes & here’s the key passage: “So now that bell has been rung. Florida State has sued the ACC. The ACC has sued Florida State. Life is just intolerable trying to get by on a budget of $160 million. Despite that onerous financial burden, the Seminoles somehow had enough nickels to rub together to build a 63-person football staff under head coach Mike Norvell, according to the athletic department’s website. They had enough money to pay (Football HC Mike) Norvell $8 million this year. They had enough program momentum to go 13–0. ACC schools, disadvantaged as they are, have somehow won three of the last 10 college football national championships and played in two other title games. The league somehow won four national titles this fall alone in Olympic sports. You’d think times are pretty good in the ACC. But there always is a demand for more, more, more. Florida State is poised to smash its commitment to the league to satisfy its endless hunger.” (link)

More clarity on the transfer rules situation from YahooSports’ Ross Dellenger: “Also perhaps lost Friday before the holiday weekend: Multi-time transferring football players who enter the portal this fall (it closes Jan. 2) can play immediately next fall without a waiver.” (link)

Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe announces the hire of Washington State AC Shannon Hunt as the next Volleyball HC in Reno. (link)

Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh responds to reporters’ questions about the ongoing rumors he could be returning to the pros: “Such a one-track mind, that’s the way we’ve gone about things. It’s literally whatever day we’re in, looking to get the most out of it. Dominate the day then we’re gonna go to sleep tonight and wake tomorrow, and see if we can’t dominate that day. It’s a single-minded group and just very focused on taking care of business today and see if we can’t do the same tomorrow.” So, that clears that up. (link)

Despite the loss to USC in last night’s Holiday Bowl, Louisville finished with a 10-4 record and an ACC title game appearance, giving HC Jeff Brohm $800K in bonuses plus two automatic one-year contract extensions worth a combined $13.5M. Neither West Virginia HC Neal Brown, nor Virginia Tech HC Brent Pry add to their account balances with wins yesterday, but the pair finished the season with $150K and $50K in bonus cash, respectively. As always, the bowl bonus details are courtesy of USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz. (link)

WeCOACH CEO Vanessa Fuchs sat down with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker at the 2023 Women Leaders National Convention to dive into the group’s “We Connect” program, support offerings, encouraging a pipeline of future leaders and more. The program is a product of the feedback from coaches for a desire to have peer-to-peer learning, adding that they have benefited from learning across all sports and levels. Asked about the WeCOACH’s Catch A Vision program, Fuchs says the focus is creating a pipeline for future coaches which will allow for more diverse candidate pools. “It's really with the intent to start identifying early – that's I think going to be the key. We have to identify women as they're coming out of their high school playing careers, their collegiate playing careers, maybe they're even retiring from a pro career, and they aspire to get into this critical profession of coaching that we've got to identify them early and start to intentionally groom them for that first coaching job.” Check out the full conversation only on Connect. Minnesota Volleyball HC Keegan Cook discusses NIL, the transfer portal and more with Coaches.wire’s Tai M. Brown. On the turnover associated with the transfer portal, Cook likes the parity and growth of programs that help grow the popularity, adding: “I do think it's challenging all of us to have a different paradigm about moving in and moving out of a situation. We used to view it like, ‘Oh what's wrong?’ and now you think about successful organizations, they have about 10% turnover in their organization. I used to fear players leaving. In my 8 years at Washington, we had no players transfer or quit and in my first week at Minnesota we had some athletes leave. So I had to come to grips with, this is the new world and how am I going to respond to it and view it and that's the key - you just have to keep adapting in coaching.” More. (link)

Wofford is pausing the search process for its next AD until after the Board of Trustees meet in February. “Expectations are justifiably high when it comes to finding the next person to lead Wofford College through the complex landscape of NCAA D-I intercollegiate athletics.” Looks like retiring AD Richard Johnson will continue to lead the Terriers until a new AD is hired. Looking back on 2023, Sportico’s Michael McCann points to changes coming to college athletics as one key storyline of the entire sports industry. McCann: “Any case the NCAA warns could become a ‘death knell’ is worth close attention. That is true of In Re College Athlete NIL Litigation (a.k.a. House v NCAA), which alleges the NCAA and Power Five violated antitrust laws. [...] The NCAA could try to settle, but it would need to pay up. It’s unknown how the NCAA, conferences and member schools—and their insurance companies—would determine who pays what. This is the first case that could economically knock down the NCAA and the system of D-I college sports in irreparable ways. McCann goes on to note that a decision in the Dartmouth-NLRB situation is “expected any day” and “could end up being the legal petition that makes college athletes employees.” Another ruling expected any day is Johnson v. NCAA, while both USC-NLRB & Carter v. NCAA are both likely years off from the finish line. (link)

The Tampa Bay Times has a bunch of additional details on USF’s new on-campus football stadium, including the proposed square footage layout: “The 35,001 units labeled ‘spectator seating’ include 12,101 for bench seating, 6,940 for students and 9,992 for priority chairbacks. There are 20 loge boxes (four people apiece) and ‘living room box seating’ (10 boxes of eight lounge seats). The stadium club adds another 19,890 square feet for everything from lounge areas to concession stands and a “parents lounge” next to the family restroom. There’s also a field-level club (11,370 square feet) and party patio (8,875 square feet). Public restrooms cover another 27,550 square feet — 233 units for men, 282 for women and six for families. [...] The plan calls for 65 traditional cooking concession stands and 65 labeled ‘tradition non-cooking.’ A 4,000-square-foot kitchen and 3,000-square-foot commissary are also under the dining/retail section, along with a team store (2,500 square feet) and three novelty stands.” Notably, there’s also early plans for the TGH Center for Athletic Excellence that could open by 2026 with a new locker room, weight room, lounge, sports medicine, administrative & coaching offices, plus clinical space for Tampa General Hospital & lots more. The NCAA has issued nine extension of eligibility waivers and 38 season of competition waivers for Northwestern State football student-athletes who competed in more than four games during the shortened Demons season. Assoc. AD for Internal Affairs/Director of NCAA Compliance Dustin Eubanks: “We appreciate the NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement staff members working with us through the arduous process. They were with us every step of the way. With the circumstances surrounding this past season, we wanted to help our student-athletes as much as we could. We couldn't have asked for a better outcome and hope these student-athletes can move forward in a positive manner whether at Northwestern State or at another institution.” (link)

With multiple high profile Football HCs publicly advocating for revenue sharing with student-athletes, WSJ’s Rachel Bachman, Louise Radnofsky and Tom McGinty get perspectives from several HCs. LSU’s Brian Kelly says he is “in favor of beginning the conversation,” with NC State’s Dave Doeren being in favor of sharing revenue. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, who was previously a staunch opponent of revenue sharing, tells the trio he is in favor of “setting aside revenue to deliver to athletes after they graduate.” More, including perspectives from HCs that have already been featured in D1.ticker. Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin sounds off on the current football calendar: “Again, it’s a terrible system. No other — I wouldn’t think any other sports, professional sports, have ever set up a system where free agency starts while the season is still going. So it really makes no sense. You can leave, you can stay, you can go other places, coaches can call you and our season is still going. It would be like before the NFC or AFC playoffs start in a couple weeks, all of a sudden, hey, free agency the week before opens. So you can start recruiting other people’s players and fly them on trips and get them to transfer. So really, in a really bad system.” (link)

With the recent changes around multi-time transfers, On3’s Pete Nakos believes there will be a significant uptick in multi-time transfers starting this week. Nakos also reports that, per an NCAA spokesperson, the association is expected to review academic standards and transfer portal requirements at next month’s NCAA Convention. (link)

The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand believes ESPN’s direct-to-consumer offering may happen in 2024, but still believes 2025 is most likely, with an initial price point between $25-30 per month. SBJ’s John Ourand on the positioning of the World Wide Leader: “They’re well positioned. They're the most watched cable TV channel on the dial like they're the ones that can do it. I'm not sure if I see what the advantage is to be a first mover, in terms of just taking the channel direct-to-consumer, but Bob Iger, since he's been back, has been all over direct-to-consumer and and wants to own that, so that's part of the strategy. … But I'm still holding out that maybe at some point they're going to say let's protect this $2-3 billion profit that we're getting from the cable channels over here.” As for the possibility of selling a portion of ESPN for a partner or two, both believe that move may not happen in 2024. The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement and abusing the paper’s IP to train its AI software. Per the New York Times’ Michael Grynbaum and Ryan Mac: “The suit does not include an exact monetary demand. But it says the defendants should be held responsible for ‘billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages’ related to the ‘unlawful copying and use of The Times’s uniquely valuable works.’ It also calls for the companies to destroy any chatbot models and training data that use copyrighted material from The Times. […] The lawsuit could test the emerging legal contours of generative A.I. technologies — so called for the text, images and other content they can create after learning from large data sets — and could carry major implications for the news industry. The Times is among a small number of outlets that have built successful business models from online journalism, but dozens of newspapers and magazines have been hobbled by readers’ migration to the internet.” (link)
