Now that the Pac-12 schools have nearly concluded their legal battles, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner asks what is next for Commissioner George Kliavkoff. Wilner estimates that if Kliavkoff signed a five-year deal that pays around $3.5M annually, he would be owed $8.75M if terminated now, and if all 12 schools agree to share liabilities equally, each would owe $729K. Wilner also lays out the potential case for termination for cause, pointing to the “misguided media rights strategy that led to the Aug. 4 collapse,” or his contradictory position in determining which schools had seats on the Pac-12 board which could lead Oregon State and Washington State to ask if he was acting against the league’s best interest. In such a circumstance, Kliavkoff could respond with a wrongful termination suit that would open everyone up for discovery and incentivize the parties to settle. Wilner: “Would the difference between the full amount owed to Kliavkoff and a settlement figure be worth the resources and legal costs? Fans might support the fight. But university presidents, one of the most risk-averse groups on the planet, would inevitably prefer the path of least resistance. So in the coming weeks, if not days, don’t be surprised if the schools dismiss Kliavkoff, pay him the full buyout, promote deputy commissioner Teresa Gould — she is both highly competent and fully qualified — and move on.” (link)

Miami (FL) AD Dan Radakovich on the Hurricanes’ position in the ACC: “For the University of Miami, we’re a proud member of the Atlantic Coast Conference and have been for many, many years. As all these things continue to come up into the marketplace and what Florida State is looking to do, we’ll be very, very interested observers. But I think the conference is strong. I think we have a good operation there. Would we like to have more resources? Sure. I think everybody would. And we’re going to try to move forward and get those within the conference. But at this point of time we’re interested observers and proud members of the ACC.” Miami is also working to receive final approvals for its planned football operations center soon and “hopefully we’re going to break ground very, very shortly.” (link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock joins the Navigating Sports Business podcast to discuss a bevy of industry topics. On NCAA President Charlie Baker’s proposal: “I thought it was a necessary action, albeit a grenade that had a pretty wide blast range. So as a politician, and I use that term fondly in this case, just getting something out there for the national debate, putting his stake in the ground, I could see some merit in that. Really, I wish Charlie Baker had been around a few years prior and he's trying to play a lot of catch up.” Babcock believes most leaders can come to grips with revenue sharing. The key is determining how it is shared, with Babcock preferring it as a percentage or average of athletic revenue. He goes on to believe it would make sense for football and maybe basketball to be separate from Olympic sports to allow the latter to operate in a more regionalized format, but, “I’m just not sure the mechanism to get it there. […] It's going to have to take a very bold leader or statement, some action to make that happen. But yes, it makes too much sense for it not to be more regionalized and more sane in that regard.” On the momentum around women’s sports with the Hokies’ Women’s Basketball program making the Final Four last year: “Certainly you take advantage of the momentum, the ticket sales. For us, that was something we talked about in the department that we want to evolve from a challenger brand into a champion brand and do some things that have never before been done here.” More. Asked about the potential ramifications for the rest of the Power 5 if Florida State is successful in its legal gambit against the ACC, The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel sees three possibilities: a move to the Big Ten, with Fox gaining a foothold in the southeast; FSU bringing more ACC schools with them to form a new football conference; or “The inevitable 28-team Premier League I’ve written about for years that always felt like another 10-to-15 years off, but if FSU breaks the glass on the GOR in, say, 18 months, suddenly something that radical comes into play almost immediately. Coming at the same time, no less, as court-imposed revenue sharing and athlete-employee classification that already had the potential to thin the ‘Power 4’ ranks. All of which is to say, I believe Florida State is setting the wheels in motion for something like that more so than just a simple move to another conference.” (link)

Cornell is moving forward with its new $55M Meinig Fieldhouse as Site Plan Review paperwork has been filed to the City of Ithaca. Per the Ithaca Voice’s Brian Crandall: “The building is fairly simple as designs go. It’s a boxy one-story building with a ‘clean architectural aesthetic’ of insulated metal panels with folded metal “moments” to indicate entries, a brick base, and corner glass openings to invite looks within. The roof will be designed to support a 450-500 kW solar array. As indoor sports arenas tend to be, it’s rather cavernous at 56 feet tall, with about 7 acres of disturbed area. [...] As for the interior space, the application touts the desire for the new building to be ‘a campus hub’ for varsity, club and intramural practices and a limited number of lacrosse competitions. The overall dimensions and height of the field house are intended to support a field that will be programmed to support NCAA requirements for both women’s and men’s varsity lacrosse competition; a varsity soccer pitch for practices; and the facility will host campus recreation, club and intramural sport teams.” More, including Sasaki serving as building architect. With six College Football Playoff titles in the last decade, the SEC has brought in $765M in bowl revenue distributions since the CFP began, the most of any league. Rounding out the Power 5, the Big Ten came in second with $734M, followed by the ACC at $677M, the Big 12 at $664M and the Pac-12 at $650M. (link)

“For all of its warnings of doom and gloom, the bowl industry in America is so healthy that you could practically put any two teams in a stadium in December and there will be a TV network willing to show it and fans willing to pay for it. If that system hasn’t already collapsed in the College Football Playoff/transfer portal/opt-out era, it’s probably not going to anytime soon.” That’s USA Today’s Dan Wolken who wonders if the bowl system will “be worth the hassle” when the CFP expands to 12 teams. Wolken believes it is possible many bowl games “just fade away — not because they can’t work as a business but because the schools aren’t getting much value in playing them,” adding the transfer portal-turned-free agency essentially renders the season over after the first week of December. The efforts put towards recruiting, signing day and the transfer portal are significant enough and don’t include preparing for the actual game with the limited roster teams may have left on campus. Wolken concludes: “The last generation of college administrators had a deep affinity for the bowl system and worked hard to make those games matter as much as possible. The next generation or two probably won’t be as kind.” (link)

Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill: “The #1 takeaway of 2023 in sports media is the renewed importance of broadcast exposure. MNF, CFB, women’s soccer/basketball/volleyball all gained broadcast windows and broke records. NBA lost broadcast windows on Christmas and was damaged. I get exasperated at the suggestion that broadcasters need sports more than sports need broadcasters. It’s clearly reciprocal. If national broadcast networks ever go away the sports industry will implode. We need each other and either side loses sight of this at their own peril.” (link)
