Indiana State names Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Angie Lansing as Interim AD. President Deborah Curtis: “Indiana State University is very fortunate to have an administrator of Angie's caliber on staff who can fill this important role. Indiana State has the utmost confidence and given her experience and vision for the Sycamores; she is the ideal candidate for this position.” (link)

Vigo County (IN) Commissioner Mark Clinkenbeard voiced concerns regarding Indiana State AD Sherard Clinkscales’ departure, writing on Facebook that “serious questions need to be answered by the current administration as well as the board of trustees. Sherard will come out on top because he’s a first-class guy. We just hope the university gets its act together before it’s too late.” Clinkenbeard’s comments come as WTHI’s Rick Semmler yesterday wrote on X: “Here’s my problem with ISU doing a press release for Clinkscales. I don’t entirely believe what they are saying and [President Deborah Curtis] needs to answer questions on this. … ISU says Clinkscales was pursuing ‘other opportunities.’ I was told the ISU administration was blindsided by this move. That Sherard had already been planning for things in the future at ISU.” (link)

Bowl Season Executive Director Nick Carparelli offers three solutions to incentivize student-athletes to play in bowl games while also making December more traversable for programs. Specifically, Carparelli believes the NCAA should eliminate early signing day, eliminate the fall transfer portal window and allow bowls to compensate players for participation. He tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger the “problem is all the unregulated circumstances around it now, with transfer portal and NIL and early signing period all happening at the same time. That doesn’t occur in any other sport. That’s what has to be fixed. … I’d love to discuss with the NCAA the notion of student-athletes being compensated to promote the event itself. I’m still not sure what’s wrong with that. What is legal is they can promote the title sponsor of the game, destination of the game — the convention and visitor’s bureau of that area. There’s a lot of ways that can be done now under the current rules, but I’d like to think that there could be more direct ways to do it.” Carparelli also points out that “all the commissioners and all the head coaches I talk to are adamant about the fact that bowl games and the bowl season are really important for college football. We really can’t have a postseason system that only has 12 opportunities. It’s important we protect the bowl system, and all the leadership in college football is committed to doing that.” (link)

Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley talks about the importance of keeping the event in the College Football Playoff rotation: “The drama of the game, the demand for tickets, hotels and restaurants had the entire city in a good mood and buzzing. It was a reminder of what a great major event city New Orleans is and hopefully a catalyst for the future.” Hundley understands that with a new media rights framework in the offing, New Year’s Six bowls will have to up their ante to remain in the game but until an agreement is finalized it remains to be seen how much the bowls will have to pony up. “We’re not hearing much of anything new. But I would imagine that there will be more discussion in Houston this weekend when the commissioners are all there. … We’ve never been ones to toot our horns. But times have changed, and we’ve got to change with them. It’s paramount going forward to be in rather than out.” (link)

Pending the North Carolina Board of Governors’ adoption of the new tuition and fee rates the Western Carolina Board of Trustees approved during its Dec. 15 meeting, WCU will be able to issue at least $30M in debt in fall 2024 to support several facilities upgrades. The debt would be funded by an increase in student fees, as the university is asking for authority to raise the fee to as much as $273 per student, up from the $249 that was proposed in 2021. WCU Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Mike Byers: “We won’t know what’s needed until we issue the debt. But it will only be what’s required to cover the ‘mortgage payment.’ The reason we raised the maximum to $273 is the dramatic increase in interest rates. Hopefully, rates will allow us to stay under the authorized amount.” WCU is hoping to raise another $30M through donations, bringing the total for the first phase of upgrades to $60M. Overall, the university is looking to make improvements to the tune of roughly $130M. (link)

Oregon Men’s Basketball HC Dana Altman checks in with JohnCanzano.com’s titular publisher to discuss the changes in the sport and says: “Not only are you answering to parents, high school coaches, AAU coaches, girlfriends, now you’ve got agents. … A lot of times [agents are] the first contact. They call us and say ‘Hey, we’ve got this kid and his name is in the portal, are you interested?’ The agents are out there shopping them around. That’s really been a big change for me. The money that’s involved and it’s just a big change.” Altman acknowledges that he himself has been slow to adjust to the new landscape: “It’s definitely been a change over the last 3 or 4 years and it’s something an old man like myself is having a hard time adjusting to. You either gotta adjust or fall behind.” (link)

The Athletic’s Grace Raynor and Manny Navarro catch up with several players at this year’s Under Armour All-America Game’s media day event to discuss a variety of recruiting topics, including NIL and what rules they would like to see changed. Asked whether they signed with the school that offered them the best NIL deal, players’ responses varied. One noted he left roughly $50K on the table but signed with his “dream school.” Another said all of his offers included NIL packages between $300-400K with the ability to earn more. Yet another explained: “I had another school offer me the same NIL deal in total, but with a signing bonus. The signing bonus would’ve been basically a really nice car. The NIL deal is like an NFL rookie contract. I had an agent handle it all for me.” On the topic of how many calls they fielded from media members throughout the process, one recruit said: “Oh, it got so bad I got a new phone. I had a phone just for media. Just straight for that. I changed my number like two, three times. It got overwhelming.” Another: “I did about four or five interviews a day and now I wish I would’ve thought about letting somebody else do it for me.” Nicest coaches throughout the process, per those interviewed by Raynor and Navarro: Georgia HC Kirby Smart, Miami (FL) HC Mario Cristobal and Alabama HC Nick Saban, among others. Weirdest/most arrogant coaches: former Texas A&M HC Jimbo Fisher, Rutgers HC Greg Schiano and Saban, among others. Meanwhile, most indicate they neither received nor asked for money just to take an official visit, but one said: “I’m pretty sure it is going on. There’s some crazy stuff going on.” Lots more. (link)

The Big East announced today its plans for a 13-stop mobile tour to expand the game day celebrations for its member school fanbases. The Big East Road Trip, developed in partnership with Playfly Sports, will be an interactive pop-up that will come to each city for upcoming men’s and women’s basketball games culminating with stops at both the men’s and women’s conference tournaments in March. Commissioner Val Ackerman: “This experiential event will not only bring an exciting pre-game atmosphere to each city but reinforces the strong connection between our conference, our schools and our dedicated fans.” (link)

ESPN VP of Research Flora Kelly helps quantify how the Rose Bowl garnered such massive audience: “One reason is its ‘perfect’ in-game ratings build. The steady minute-by-minute build is what ratings dreams are made of and led to a nearly 33M peak. The highest peak EVER for a Semi in the history of the playoff.” (link)
