DIII VP McCleary joins D3Hoopsville’s McHugh to discuss the state of DIII. With a new budget cycle on the horizon in FY25, McCleary doesn’t see the ~80/20 budget split between championships and the enrichment fund to change, “but that’s something that again depending on the feedback from the membership then that filters through strategic planning and finance, filters through the championships committee, different committees as it bubbles up to the councils for final approval. I think the membership is very pleased with us putting a bit more money towards our championships, but at the same time protecting the enrichment fund.” McCleary also notes DIII will undergo an external review of all programs funded by the enrichment fund. On the size of the membership, McCleary expects the trend of a slight decline in membership to continue as institutions reclassify, eliminate athletics or close all together. Further: “While we may get some interest, we’re probably going to lose some institutions, so I don’t see us growing back up to 450. I also am not sure we’re going to drop all the way down to 275, but I do believe that we’ll probably over the next five years lose more institutions than we’re going to get.” More. (link)

Outgoing NCAA President Emmert sat down with NPR to discuss his tenure, and Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger asserts that NPR host Shapiro asked several “pointed” questions, “none of which really produced enlightening answers.” One example: Shapiro pushes back on several of Emmert’s claims, including that gender equity is paramount and that he’s been an NIL advocate “for years,” by asserting: “You say you've been an advocate for moving forward on NIL, but you fought hard against giving student athletes financial benefits. And the Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling against you in 2021. The association continues to fight legal battles. You've called for Congress to intervene. That's led nowhere. When you look at this history and this set of facts, it looks like from the Supreme Court on down, these are battles that the NCAA has fought and lost. … On issue after issue, you describe progress that the NCAA has made. And I can't help but look at the history and wonder whether the organization was dragged into making that progress rather than leading the way.” Emmert: "Sports produces plenty of passion and it often gets aimed at my direction." The Athletic’s Auerbach asks NCAA VP of Enforcement Duncan about the “NIL presumption” and how the enforcement team separates fact from fiction when it comes to reports or rumors. Auerbach specifically uses the example of a message board post that anyone could put up without substantiation. Duncan: “I wouldn’t say it’s limited to media stories or social media. We have information coming in from lots and lots of different sources. But we also know that sources have their own agendas. We’ve always got to ask why it is that somebody would put something on a message board. We know that there are folks out there who want to use the infractions process to advance their own agendas, and we work really hard to be discerning consumers of information and know that sources may have their own reasons for sharing information. We don’t want to fall prey to that. We don’t want to be a pawn in somebody else’s scheme. We work really hard to test information that comes in. We’re common-sense people. ... We’re not so cynical that we think everybody’s lying to us, but we’re also not so naive that we believe everything that every booster puts on a message board.” (link)

Further, headlining attorney Mars shares his incredulity at the NCAA’s new charging standard for NIL cases, writing: “The NCAA has lost its mind. Where else in the free world is there a presumption of guilt based on a tip or a news story?” ESPN’s Murphy responds: “The ‘NCAA’ in this instance is the schools. The national office doesn't make rules – the schools do. So this is the schools getting together and saying: We need a ‘guilty until proven innocent’ standard to police ourselves, and we trust the Indy office to do it with common sense.” (link)

Citing struggles to maintain sufficient roster size, Hollins will discontinue WLAX at the end of the 2022-23 season. From the school release: “Evaluation of the lacrosse program has been ongoing since 2009. In 2016, after years of struggling to carry a full roster, Hollins lacrosse paused its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. In 2018, Hollins received a waiver to be exempt from in-conference play and was granted an extension to the waiver in 2022. [...] On an ongoing basis, Hollins reviews and invests in athletics with a goal of building a sustainable path forward for all sports and enhancing the student-athlete experience. In addition to reallocating lacrosse resources to other athletic programs, current facility projects, including an outdoor track and field facility, improvements and additions to the riding center, and construction of new spaces for athletic training and strength and conditioning in the athletic center all reflect the university's commitment to growing the overall athletics program.” (link)

As expected, the U.S. Federal Reserve yesterday raised interest rates by 0.25%. Fed Chair Powell cautions that the scaled-back rate hike should not be misconstrued as a softened resolve against inflation. “We have to complete the job. That’s what we’re here for. … It is a good thing that the disinflation that we have seen so far has not come at the expense of a weaker labor market. But I would also say that that disinflationary process that you now see underway is really at an early stage.” (link); U.S. job openings increased 572K to 11M in December, setting a new five-month high. Enrollment for all of higher education remains 5.8% below 2019 levels, but a National Student Clearinghouse Research Center report shows undergraduate enrollment began to stabilize last fall, contracting by just 0.6% compared to the same period in 2021. Nationwide, higher ed institutions gained 97K freshman, an increase of 4.3% over the prior year. Freshman enrollment overall, however, is down 150K students compared to 2019. Head counts for Hispanic and Asian undergrads rose by 1.6% and 1.8%, respectively. White undergrads accounted for the steepest decline at 3.6%, followed by Black students at 1.9% and Native American students at 1.6%. Women continued their decline in undergraduate enrollment, down 1.5% compared to fall 2021, while men began to stabilize with 0.2% growth. (link)
