Freshly minted South Dakota AD Jon Schemmel addressed the media at an introductory press conference yesterday and remarked: "We all know that the world of college athletics is chaotic at the very best right now. That is exciting to me. Where there is chaos there is opportunity. We're going to set a vision that is going to be bold and it's going to be bright. We're going to put together a plan, probably in the range of a 5-10-year plan, that's going to focus on a lot of different areas. But the goal of that plan is to set a vision and a mission to go along with our brand that every single person in the department – our student-athletes, our coaches, this university – can point to and say this is what Coyote athletics stands for." USD President Sheila Gestring also addressed the media and said of Schemmel’s hire: “Jon is a familiar face to the University of South Dakota as he once served as our senior associate athletic director for development. Most notable was Jon's role in raising more than $50M for the new arena, track and soccer complex. I cannot even begin to imagine what USD athletics would look like without that critically important capital improvement plan." (link)

Fox is “weighing a massive bid” for some or all of the College Football Playoff, according to Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy, who writes: “The tell here came when Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch warned Wall Street that it was ‘highly unlikely’ he’d bid on the NBA against ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery Sports. According to sources, Murdoch and Co. are building a war chest for other rights negotiations. (At the same time, another source vowed that Fox would not overpay for the CFP. The network is counting on ESPN’s newly disciplined approach to rights negotiations). … Coming up on the outside is NBC Sports, which added Big Ten rights to its existing Notre Dame package. Along with the NBA’s rights, the CFP’s will be among the most eagerly sought-out sports rights in 2024.” (link); Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson: “If I'm Fox I only bid if there is an extension beyond the last two years of the current deal (which I'm told CFP is considering). No way I go for just first-round games. Also, I don't share the package unless I have access to semifinals and champ games in some form of rotation. … Likely the best way for CFP to maximize revenue is with multiple partners. Not sure that any singular outlet wants to swallow the whole thing on their own. ‘Sharing’ of packages is the new way in a sports TV world where $$$'s are being watched closely.” (link)

NCAA Chief Medical Officer Brian Hainline is joined by Michigan Concussion Center Director Steven Broglio and Washington sports medicine/neurological surgery/orthopedics professor Stan Herring to highlight recent developments in concussion science, including consensus statements from the 6th International Conference on Concussion in Sport and emerging data from the NCAA-DoD CARE Consortium that informed updates to the NCAA Concussion Safety Protocol Checklist. Topics covered include new guidance on return-to-sport, return-to-learn, persisting symptoms, and later in life risks. Broglio points out that studies done by Buffalo researchers 15 years ago have led to new return-to-play guidelines that say athletes who have suffered concussions should at least return to activities of daily living within 24-48 hours “if not some light aerobic exercise and then starting to work them back into their sport in a very controlled and safe manner, but using exercise as a therapy, as a medicine. And then as they get more comfortable being back in their sport in a protected way, you can start introducing non-contact drills and then contact drills and then ultimately we can get them back to their sport in a very safe and efficient way.” Herring, meanwhile, explains that “most concussions get better. And if they don’t get better, then you need to ask questions. The first question [being] did I miss something on the diagnostic side or secondly are there mitigating factors? If you have attribution of causation only to the concussion, you may miss treatable pre-existing coexisting or resulting problems and this doesn't serve the athlete well. … So this is about pattern recognition. It’s also about understanding that every brain injury is a psychological injury by definition.” Lots more, including discussion on retirement from sport. (link)

CBS’ Matt Norlander calls for more enforcement of men’s basketball coaches straying outside the coaching box. Norlander cites Marquette HC Shaka Smart’s recent encroachment as the latest and most egregious example. While he was in terrific guarding position, Smart, as Norlander points out, is not a player and therefore shouldn’t actually be cutting off potential lanes to the basket. One veteran official tells Norlander: "I love Shaka, and if I would've T'ed him up for this, he would've been like, 'You're right.’ Some others wouldn't have responded that way." Norlander continues: “When called out, coaches will often fall back on the fib of telling refs they were caught up in the moment and didn't realize their positioning. As one source on the coaches' side told me: "Any coach who tells you they don't know where they are is full of s---. We are so obsessed with teaching position and with footwork." And the problem is only getting worse, according to another officiating source who tells Norlander: “I would say the past two years, for sure, there has not been that much of a focus or emphasis on bench decorum, which includes not just the conduct of the coach but the location of the coach. … If it's ignored, shame on the officials." Another source says it comes down to the “courage” of officials and the lack of warnings or technicals issued has only emboldened coaches and “from an official's perspective, it's just easier to do nothing." More. (link)

Here’s an interesting personnel move: After retiring from football, standout UTSA QB Frank Harris will serve as executive director of the Roadrunners-focused City Fans 210 collective. According to KENS 5’s Nate Ryan, Harris was offered coaching jobs by Football HC Jeff Traylor and Clemens High School but wants to raise NIL awareness. (link)

Kellanova CMO Julie Bowerman talks about her company’s marketing plan for the Pop-Tarts Bowl and says the campaign went beyond just having an edible mascot. “We had ads that were in-game that ran pre- and post-game. If you walked into the stadium, you would have had the opportunity at the concessions to buy Pop Tart-themed and flavored recipes. There was an experiential activation surrounding the lead-up to the game where consumers could go in and bet on some of the funny things that the Pop-Tart would do during the game. There’s a lot of amplification that we put behind what other consumers were saying.” Bowerman also says the sponsorship resulted in the “single biggest earned-media campaign that the brand has had. The search responsiveness is six times what we’ve seen in previous types of activations. We’re feeling really good about what it’s doing from a comms standpoint, a resonance standpoint, certainly from a fan standpoint. We just haven’t gotten yet into the deep analysis of the sales impact, but that will come for sure.” Will we see the mascot again? “I can pretty convincingly tell you that won’t be the last time that you see our mascot come to life.” (link)

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Pop-Tarts Bowl tells Extra Points publisher Matt Brown the bowl has authorized EA Sports to license the bowl’s intellectual property; however, the “spokesperson stressed that the agreement the Pop-Tarts folks agreed to was the standard, boilerplate agreement given to all bowl games, not anything unique about say, the ability to devour a mascot in a cutscene.” Per the spokesperson: “I don’t yet know how they plan to integrate our IP, but I can only hope the opportunity exists for Strawberry to compete in mascot mode or for a virtual PTB to end with a virtually-edible mascot.” We all do, spokesperson. We all do. (link)

Total Player Value Inc. Founder Jeff Cravens believes 2024 will bring more university involvement in NIL at the macro level, and the “top conferences will need to proactively push for a new model in conjunction with the NCAA. Solutions will have mixed reviews but I think the leaders realize that inaction is no longer an option. The new model will include some type of player compensation tied to the use of their NIL in live televised/streamed games. This will be a complicated, yet solvable solution that will be revised and tweaked for years to come. Collectives and in-house NIL departments will merge and come under the university level. The focus will be on individual education (most education efforts to this point have been in group settings), that will educate and support athletes who want to pursue brand deals. Digital rights management on behalf of players will start to become a meaningful business. A school who partners or manages this well will be able to show meaningful results for its top players. The top 70 football programs will continue to move to a GM model where player evaluation, roster management and NIL resource management come together. This will increase in importance as the revenue model shifts from donor-based to media-based value.” (link)

Indiana State names Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Angie Lansing as Interim AD. Indiana State has the utmost confidence and given her experience and vision for the Sycamores; she is the ideal candidate for this position.” (link)

Vigo County (IN) Commissioner Mark Clinkenbeard voiced concerns regarding Indiana State AD Sherard Clinkscales’ departure, writing on Facebook that “serious questions need to be answered by the current administration as well as the board of trustees. Sherard will come out on top because he’s a first-class guy. We just hope the university gets its act together before it’s too late.” Clinkenbeard’s comments come as WTHI’s Rick Semmler yesterday wrote on X: “Here’s my problem with ISU doing a press release for Clinkscales. I don’t entirely believe what they are saying and [President Deborah Curtis] needs to answer questions on this. … ISU says Clinkscales was pursuing ‘other opportunities.’ I was told the ISU administration was blindsided by this move. That Sherard had already been planning for things in the future at ISU.” (link)

Bowl Season Executive Director Nick Carparelli offers three solutions to incentivize student-athletes to play in bowl games while also making December more traversable for programs. Specifically, Carparelli believes the NCAA should eliminate early signing day, eliminate the fall transfer portal window and allow bowls to compensate players for participation. He tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger the “problem is all the unregulated circumstances around it now, with transfer portal and NIL and early signing period all happening at the same time. That doesn’t occur in any other sport. That’s what has to be fixed. … I’d love to discuss with the NCAA the notion of student-athletes being compensated to promote the event itself. I’m still not sure what’s wrong with that. What is legal is they can promote the title sponsor of the game, destination of the game — the convention and visitor’s bureau of that area. There’s a lot of ways that can be done now under the current rules, but I’d like to think that there could be more direct ways to do it.” Carparelli also points out that “all the commissioners and all the head coaches I talk to are adamant about the fact that bowl games and the bowl season are really important for college football. We really can’t have a postseason system that only has 12 opportunities. It’s important we protect the bowl system, and all the leadership in college football is committed to doing that.” (link)

Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley talks about the importance of keeping the event in the College Football Playoff rotation: “The drama of the game, the demand for tickets, hotels and restaurants had the entire city in a good mood and buzzing. It was a reminder of what a great major event city New Orleans is and hopefully a catalyst for the future.” Hundley understands that with a new media rights framework in the offing, New Year’s Six bowls will have to up their ante to remain in the game but until an agreement is finalized it remains to be seen how much the bowls will have to pony up. “We’re not hearing much of anything new. But I would imagine that there will be more discussion in Houston this weekend when the commissioners are all there. … We’ve never been ones to toot our horns. But times have changed, and we’ve got to change with them. It’s paramount going forward to be in rather than out.” (link)

Pending the North Carolina Board of Governors’ adoption of the new tuition and fee rates the Western Carolina Board of Trustees approved during its Dec. 15 meeting, WCU will be able to issue at least $30M in debt in fall 2024 to support several facilities upgrades. The debt would be funded by an increase in student fees, as the university is asking for authority to raise the fee to as much as $273 per student, up from the $249 that was proposed in 2021. WCU Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Mike Byers: “We won’t know what’s needed until we issue the debt. But it will only be what’s required to cover the ‘mortgage payment.’ The reason we raised the maximum to $273 is the dramatic increase in interest rates. Hopefully, rates will allow us to stay under the authorized amount.” WCU is hoping to raise another $30M through donations, bringing the total for the first phase of upgrades to $60M. Overall, the university is looking to make improvements to the tune of roughly $130M. (link)

Oregon Men’s Basketball HC Dana Altman checks in with JohnCanzano.com’s titular publisher to discuss the changes in the sport and says: “Not only are you answering to parents, high school coaches, AAU coaches, girlfriends, now you’ve got agents. … A lot of times [agents are] the first contact. They call us and say ‘Hey, we’ve got this kid and his name is in the portal, are you interested?’ The agents are out there shopping them around. That’s really been a big change for me. The money that’s involved and it’s just a big change.” Altman acknowledges that he himself has been slow to adjust to the new landscape: “It’s definitely been a change over the last 3 or 4 years and it’s something an old man like myself is having a hard time adjusting to. You either gotta adjust or fall behind.” (link)

The Athletic’s Grace Raynor and Manny Navarro catch up with several players at this year’s Under Armour All-America Game’s media day event to discuss a variety of recruiting topics, including NIL and what rules they would like to see changed. Asked whether they signed with the school that offered them the best NIL deal, players’ responses varied. One noted he left roughly $50K on the table but signed with his “dream school.” Another said all of his offers included NIL packages between $300-400K with the ability to earn more. Yet another explained: “I had another school offer me the same NIL deal in total, but with a signing bonus. The signing bonus would’ve been basically a really nice car. The NIL deal is like an NFL rookie contract. I had an agent handle it all for me.” On the topic of how many calls they fielded from media members throughout the process, one recruit said: “Oh, it got so bad I got a new phone. I had a phone just for media. Just straight for that. I changed my number like two, three times. It got overwhelming.” Another: “I did about four or five interviews a day and now I wish I would’ve thought about letting somebody else do it for me.” Nicest coaches throughout the process, per those interviewed by Raynor and Navarro: Georgia HC Kirby Smart, Miami (FL) HC Mario Cristobal and Alabama HC Nick Saban, among others. Weirdest/most arrogant coaches: former Texas A&M HC Jimbo Fisher, Rutgers HC Greg Schiano and Saban, among others. Meanwhile, most indicate they neither received nor asked for money just to take an official visit, but one said: “I’m pretty sure it is going on. There’s some crazy stuff going on.” Lots more. (link)

The Big East announced today its plans for a 13-stop mobile tour to expand the game day celebrations for its member school fanbases. The Big East Road Trip, developed in partnership with Playfly Sports, will be an interactive pop-up that will come to each city for upcoming men’s and women’s basketball games culminating with stops at both the men’s and women’s conference tournaments in March. Commissioner Val Ackerman: “This experiential event will not only bring an exciting pre-game atmosphere to each city but reinforces the strong connection between our conference, our schools and our dedicated fans.” (link)

ESPN VP of Research Flora Kelly helps quantify how the Rose Bowl garnered such massive audience: “One reason is its ‘perfect’ in-game ratings build. The steady minute-by-minute build is what ratings dreams are made of and led to a nearly 33M peak. The highest peak EVER for a Semi in the history of the playoff.” (link)
