Cleveland State AD Scott Garrett has accepted the Deputy AD for Administration position at Wake Forest. Demon Deacons AD John Currie: “Scott is a servant leader who has proven his strategic assessment skills and a thoughtful management style in hiring successful head coaches and dozens of staff members in his nearly five years at Cleveland State. [...] Scott's tested leadership experience both on campus and across intercollegiate athletics, relationship building skills, and collaborative style will be the perfect complement to our veteran executive leadership team at Wake Forest.” Garrett will remain at CSU through January 15. Indiana State and former AD Sherard Clinkscales mutually agreed that Clinkscales would resign, according to a separation and release agreement signed by both parties on January 1. The separation agreement also states that ISU agreed to pay Clinkscales $165,979 in severance as well as other benefits and considerations. The severance, per the Tribune-Star’s Mark Bennett, "compensates Mr. Clinkscales for 50% of his base salary for the remaining 18 months.” The agreement also includes a non-disparagement clause for both parties. The NCAA and ESPN agree to a new eight-year, $920M media rights deal that encompasses 40 college sports championships, including women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball. According to NCAA President Charlie Baker, the agreement is worth an average of $115M annually, nearly three times the value of the current contract. The pact includes rights to 21 women's championships and 19 men's championships and also includes the FCS title game airing on ABC, more than 800 hours of NCAA championships appearing on ESPN linear networks throughout the year and more than 2,300 hours combined on linear and digital platforms. The men’s hoops NIT and Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament are also included. (link); SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Also of note, this NCAA agreement is set to conclude at the same time as the domestic rights for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament presently owned by CBS and Warner Bros. Discovery, allowing the NCAA great flexibility in its next round of negotiations.” Given the increase in value, NCAA members will explore revenue distribution units for the women's basketball tournament. The Division I Board of Directors Finance committee began discussion of revenue distribution philosophies and new models this year, and those discussions will continue with membership in the coming year. NCAA President Charlie Baker: “What we had always said was we wanted the best deal for all of our championships. If you think about it, it's [2,300] hours of programming, which over the eight years of the deal will take place in an enormous number of settings with a whole variety of challenges and on the ground circumstances that make this something where if you can get a production partner who's willing to bite the whole thing off at a price that we believe is more than market competitive, we thought that was a better way to go.” (link, link, link)

The DI Board of Directors will discuss NCAA President Charlie Baker’s player compensation proposal when it meets next week and “determine whether to charge the Division I Council, or another body, with developing recommendations related to the framework of the proposal — a decision that will initiate a potentially yearlong activation process and chart a course for one of the most radical changes in NCAA history,” Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports. According to NCAA Convention documents, the initial focus would be on the proposal’s first two components, namely those which allow schools to ink NIL deals with student-athletes and provide them with compensation in the form of enhanced educational benefits. The process of adopting a new subdivision would be subsequent to the adoption of the first two concepts. According to the timeline obtained by Dellenger, the DI Council, if given authority to further explore the proposal, will produce final recommendations at the June 25-26 Board of Directors meeting. The board would then take action on those recommendations by August, with action on the new subdivision structure slated to take place at next year’s NCAA Convention. More from Dellenger. (link)

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has sent a public records request seeking all ACC “financial, business, and membership records” relating to Florida State, including the grant of rights and communications with ESPN. Moody: “One of Florida’s top universities is facing the possibility of forfeiting more than half a billion dollars, and the ACC is refusing to hand over the agreements at the center of this astronomical financial penalty. They are unlawfully keeping these documents locked away in North Carolina. However, North Carolina and Florida state laws are clear that these agreements are public records and must be handed over immediately. Today, I am taking action to ensure FSU and the public are able to review these agreements.” (link)

Maryland AD Damon Evans Q&As with Inside MD Sports’ Ben Dickson and says of recruiting becoming increasingly transactional: “I still believe it's about relationships. I just believe there's another component that's been added to it that makes it a little bit more challenging. And so you still have to have the relationship, but make no mistake about it – NIL plays a significant role in what is happening in college athletics nowadays. I'm not going to shy away from it. It's not what we're all used to, but it is the new frontier for us. So again, as I said earlier, you can't complain. You got to find solutions.” Evans also calls on the fans to help on the NIL front. “I'm only hopeful that they'll continue to step up and want to thank those who have. But we need those who haven’t to really step up and help us. Football, basketball, all of our sports across the board.” (link)

Amer Sports, the parent company of 11 sports brands including Louisville Slugger, Wilson and Salomon, has filed for an IPO on the New York Stock Exchange. While the initial paperwork doesn’t yet list an offering size, Sportico’s Brendan Coffey notes it has been “widely reported that Finland-based Amer is seeking a $10B valuation. … The IPO proceeds will go to repay more than $4B in loans the business has on its books, stemming from the buyout by the Wilson-Chinese consortium, according to the prospectus.” The combined business generated $3.55B in revenue in 2022. Idaho has engaged an outside law firm to investigate the women’s volleyball program under HC Chris Gonzalez and says in a statement: “The University of Idaho is deeply concerned about the allegations brought by some members of the women’s volleyball team against their coach, Chris Gonzalez. As a result, an investigation started in November around legal issues and has been expanded to include climate and culture concerns. The start of the investigation was delayed at the request of those who filed the complaints, in order to finish the season. An outside investigative team is doing the investigation, in which Coach Gonzalez is fully cooperating. While they have been asked to expedite the investigation, we also do not want to forego quality for speed.” (link)

Former Notre Dame Men’s Basketball HC Mike Brey talks about his departure from South Bend and says discussions with USF never advanced to a stage where he was in a position to take or decline the job. “I went down there on my own dime. I did TV up in New York and flew down. I'm going, let's see, I’ll take this job and my grandsons can be ballboys. If I get fired in two years, heck, I’m still living in Tampa. Then I'm like, (screw) it. You can't look at it like that. … There was never a contract issue with me leaving Notre Dame. My stuff with Notre Dame, to Jack Swarbrick’s credit, he kept me on salary for another two months, which was great. I had no buyout either way. There was no buyout. I had been there long enough where there were no contractual obligations. Look, the money we all made in college athletics, we were stealing.” Is a return to college in his future? “My agent called me a month ago and said that people are going to start asking about you coming back to college. I really don't want to do it. I just don't feel it. Never say never, but that was another life. I have no desire to go back and be the head guy again, be the voice. That's not moving me right now.” (link)
