Fiesta Bowl CEO Erik Moses talks with Andscape’s Jerry Bembry about the future of the event and says: “Given all of the rapidly changing aspects and elements of college athletics, I’m trying to look around corners and figure out what happens in the next media deal, and what the College Football Playoff looks like. How do we ensure that we remain not only prominent, but that we also help bring positive economic impact to Arizona and the valley?” Moses, who previously helped to develop the Military Bowl and AT&T Nation’s Classic, plans to infuse some of what he’s learned at those stops into the events surrounding the Fiesta Bowl. “If you saw Alabama State leading the Macy’s Day parade, I’d like to inject some of that energy (into the Fiesta Bowl parade). It would be nice to bring some of those traditions to people here in the southwest, a part of the country where you don’t have HBCUs.” Moses also says of his position as one of the most influential Black executives in college sports: “I don’t set out to be any kind of pioneer or trailblazer or anything like that, but I’m not going to shy away from holding up that mantle. Representation matters, and I’m going to do my part to make certain that people know things like this are possible.” (link)

The FBS Oversight Committee is recommending the DI Council introduce legislation to remove the “one occasion per year” limitation on when the nonprofessional sponsors of bowl games may “provide entertainment expenses related to an event organized by the nonprofessional sponsor of a postseason bowl game specifically for the family members of student-athletes participating in the postseason bowl.” The proposal allows expenses to be provided to student-athletes’ family members in the expanded College Football Playoff. The committee is also recommending the deregulation of the maximum value of the awards provided by the CFP for participation in a postseason bowl. The current limit is $550. (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders reflects on the season and tells People Magazine ahead of the debut of the second season of Coach Prime: “You always wish that you had a little more privacy, but the same thing that makes you shine will show your blemishes. [The season] was a whirlwind early on. Then it calmed down to a halt. We’re going to show you how we dealt with that adversity, it was tough because I’ve never lost pretty much in life, and in the last several years of my life, 10 years, decade, I’m a darn winner, so dealing with losses was tough. … There’s a process to all of it, and you have to go through certain processes of life to get to where you want to get to. It just doesn’t happen overnight. Contrary to what people may believe, success does not happen overnight.” (link)

UAB Football HC Trent Dilfer talks about his departure from ESPN and says he felt his influence resonated during the first five years, but then “TV got weird, man. It got people telling you what you should be talking about, what was important and what wasn’t important. It wasn’t about football all of a sudden. The politics in the building started determining what people got the chance to say what where. If it was a hot-button topic that Twitter was trending on at the time, then it made the front of the show, whether it was a premiere game or not. All these other things started creeping in…it just got overwhelming.” Dilfer acknowledges he made mistakes along the way, including getting involved with a contract negotiation and possibly overplaying his hand. “It just got funky at the end, and it was better for everybody that I was off TV. And I’m sure the 50% that hated me were like, ‘Great, get him off. Put the next bald guy on.’” Dilfer says of the impact NFL and college analysts have: “It’s the most narcissistic thing out there. I watched Fox News, CNN News and ESPN or whatever it is, and these people actually think they’re changing the world. And I’m here to tell you, no, you’re not. Like, nobody really cares. You’re either reinforcing something they believe or telling them something. You’re either pissing them off or making them happy. But you ain’t changing anybody for the better.” (link)

Six student-athletes on Idaho’s 2023 roster, three former players and a university employee allege Vandals Volleyball HC Chris Gonzalez “physically abused and bullied players, pressured injured players to play and train against the orders of the school’s sports medicine staff, regularly deprived players of food on road trips, body shamed players, made racially insensitive and inappropriate comments to players, and pressured sports medicine staff to share confidential information about players’ weight,” according the Orange County Register’s Scott M. Reid. One starter reportedly informed Vandals AD Terry Gawlik and other university officials that players “don’t feel safe” playing for Gonzalez, and Marissa Drange, an outside hitter on the 2022 team, says: “This is a pattern that isn’t something new.” Chelsey R. Mason, who played for Gonzalez at Iowa, adds: “Complaints levied against Christopher Gonzalez should not be dismissed as pouting or tempestuous outbursts thrown by teenagers and young adults, or overbearing, dissatisfied parents. These are evidence of unprofessional, abusive, manipulative practices that have spanned Gonzalez’s career. These are illustrations of Christopher Gonzalez’s character. These are cries for help.” The Southern California News Group asked Gawlik about the allegations and Gawlik responded: “As a general practice, the U of I takes every allegation seriously, investigates them, and responds as soon as possible.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy predicts Netflix will “continue to be more of a tease than a major player in the sports arena” in 2024. “The streamer will roll out more sports documentaries and occasional made-for-TV events, but it won’t match the billions of dollars Apple (MLS) and Amazon (NFL) have spent on live-game packages. Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson agrees that the timing isn’t quite right yet. “Netflix will not enter sports in a major way.” (link)
