It’s been quite a while since Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff has talked to the media, here’s what he had to say after Washington’s thrilling College Football Playoff semifinal win over Texas: “Happy for the kids. They don’t deserve all the nonsense going on around them. We were focused on rebuilding football. Took 2.5 years. I wish it would have happened quicker. If some of our schools would have been a little more patient, it would have paid off.” (link)

Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh was asked whether the national championship game would be his last with the school and responded: “My future consists of a happy flight back to Ann Arbor, Michigan.” Asked whether he would try to have Harbaugh sign an extension on the flight home, Wolverines AD Warde Manuel remarked: “Hey, brother, I’m working on it. Believe me. I’ve been working on it." (link, link)

Due to conference bylaws, Alabama and Texas will earn more from their College Football Playoff semifinal appearances than Washington and Michigan, respectively. Business of College Sports’ Kristi Dosh explains: “Under the current SEC bylaws, Alabama will receive $2.05M for its appearance in the semifinals and an additional $2.15M if the team makes it to the College Football Playoff National Championship. Alabama will also receive a travel allowance determined by the SEC Executive Committee. The Big 12 structures its award a little differently. The participating team receives the higher of two formulas: Formula A awards a participation subsidy of $2,532,395 and a travel subsidy of $450/one-way mile. Formula B awards a participation subsidy of $2,138,467 and a travel subsidy of $900/one-way mile. The Sugar Bowl is approximately 511 miles from the University of Texas campus, which makes Formula A the higher at $2,762,345. The Big 12 awards this for both the semifinal game and the national championship game, and I have confirmed Texas will still receive this despite their planned departure for the SEC.” Neither the Big Ten nor Pac-12 offer awards to teams participating in the CFP before dividing the $6M each conference receives. Chicago State AD Monique Carroll sits down with Baylor Deputy AD for External Affairs/Chief Revenue Officer Jovan Overshown at the 2023 Women Leaders Convention to discuss being an “agent for change” to advance the university’s Excellence In Motion mission. Carroll explains what drew her to Chicago State, why connecting with people is her superpower and what she’s learned about herself through leadership opportunities throughout her career. On the addition of football, Carroll notes that it’s been explored for several years but now is the right time. “And then looking at the university’s strategic plan, we know about the enrollment cliff that is about to happen and how do we prepare ourselves in that space? We're an independent institution, we're the only one that's fully independent. We're not in a conference and so as we explore being a conference, what conferences do we want to be a part of? What are their offerings and looking at all those things really, really fast because it has been a year.” More on AthleticDirectorU. (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz updates bowl season bonus counts through last night’s games. Washington Football HC Kalen DeBoer left New Orleans with a $450K bonus for the Huskies’ Sugar Bowl win, bringing his season tally to $1.075M. Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh does not add to his $2M in bonuses earned this season, nor does LSU leader Brian Kelly, who finishes the season with $500K in bonus cash. Oregon’s Dan Lanning and Tennessee’s Josh Heupel conclude the campaign with $450K and $150K, respectively, in bonuses earned. Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz finishes the year with $475K in bonuses and per his contract the AC pool for next season will increase by at least 11%. Toledo HC Jason Candle finished the year with $405K in bonuses and an automatic one-year extension. (link)

Bradley Women’s Basketball HC Kate Popovec-Goss returned from a 10-game suspension over the weekend and said: “To be welcomed back with open arms was awesome, but I think I’m also proud of [the players] and my staff because we so easily could have shut down during that period, and I think we found a lot of juice toward the end of it. … As a second-year head coach, this first year and a half has been really challenging. I have been hit with a tremendous amount of adversity personally: Ruptured an Achilles, coached on a scooter. Obviously my suspension, but I think what I’ve learned is to just trust myself. Trust who I am. And you want to be able to coach a team that reflects your energy and reflects who you are.” (link)

Creighton Volleyball HC Kirsten Bernthal Booth took to X to share her frustration regarding tampering in the transfer portal: “Is this what we want our sport to be? Do we want to follow in the steps of some other high-profile sports that have this reputation? Is cheating the rules to win what we want to role model?” Coaches, Booth noted, are aware they can’t give any information on scholarships or NIL until a student-athlete officially enters the portal, “yet we are seeing players telling other coaches they have made their decision minutes after entering the portal. This is also tampering. … We have an amazing sport that is growing exponentially and continues to become higher profile. We are at a pivotal point in the direction our sport goes.” (link)

Sports Management Resources President/former Texas Women’s AD Donna Lopiano reacts to NCAA President Charlie Baker’s player compensation proposal and argues that if it was an attempt to keep the Power 4 from leaving the NCAA, it will likely be a futile one. “Does President Baker know that 80% of all [FBS] college presidents do not believe they can control the wishes of their football or basketball coaches – or the trustees who support them? Does he know that none of the national associations of college presidents, trustees, or governing boards have so much as a committee organized to examine intercollegiate athletics reform?” Lopiano points out that “in 1997, the commissioners of the richest football conferences, all members of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), threatened to leave the NCAA if the membership failed to adopt legislation (a) giving the FBS control the NCAA Board of Governors, (b) limiting financial distributions to Divisions II and III, and (c) mandating that if the NCAA ever established an FBS football championship, 100 percent of the proceeds would go to only FBS schools.” Lopiano contends similar power plays were executed in 2014 and 2020 and concludes: “Overall, the Baker proposal would force the wealthiest schools to provide cash reparations rather than fulfill their recruiting promises to college athletes – a meaningful education in a baccalaureate degree program of the athlete’s choice, in a safe educational environment free from discrimination on the basis of race or sex. Will higher education leaders stand up to the challenge of the strawman proposal, or will their silence continue?” More. (link)

Former Missouri State President Michael Nietzel identifies five higher ed trends to watch out for in 2024, starting with changes to the admissions landscape. “Look for more legal challenges to race-conscious considerations in the awarding of financial aid and other admissions practices as follow-ons to last year’s Supreme Court decision banning race-conscious admissions at selective colleges. And on the flip side, more institutions will try to maintain a commitment to student diversity with new enrollment strategies that comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling.” Nietzel also believes the industry will likely face more governmental scrutiny in the wake of the U.S House of Representatives hearing on campus antisemitism and ongoing distaste among the GOP for DEI-related programming. “House Republicans have promised to hold more hearings on what they perceive to be multiple problems at America’s leading universities. Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) recently voiced what’s been the silent part up till now, telling a meeting of business leaders that December’s hearings were just the first step in a long-term strategy to defund elite schools.” Other trends include the expanded use of AI, continued campus budget concerns and curricular innovations. Fiesta Bowl CEO Erik Moses talks with Andscape’s Jerry Bembry about the future of the event and says: “Given all of the rapidly changing aspects and elements of college athletics, I’m trying to look around corners and figure out what happens in the next media deal, and what the College Football Playoff looks like. How do we ensure that we remain not only prominent, but that we also help bring positive economic impact to Arizona and the valley?” Moses, who previously helped to develop the Military Bowl and AT&T Nation’s Classic, plans to infuse some of what he’s learned at those stops into the events surrounding the Fiesta Bowl. “If you saw Alabama State leading the Macy’s Day parade, I’d like to inject some of that energy (into the Fiesta Bowl parade). It would be nice to bring some of those traditions to people here in the southwest, a part of the country where you don’t have HBCUs.” Moses also says of his position as one of the most influential Black executives in college sports: “I don’t set out to be any kind of pioneer or trailblazer or anything like that, but I’m not going to shy away from holding up that mantle. Representation matters, and I’m going to do my part to make certain that people know things like this are possible.” (link)

The FBS Oversight Committee is recommending the DI Council introduce legislation to remove the “one occasion per year” limitation on when the nonprofessional sponsors of bowl games may “provide entertainment expenses related to an event organized by the nonprofessional sponsor of a postseason bowl game specifically for the family members of student-athletes participating in the postseason bowl.” The proposal allows expenses to be provided to student-athletes’ family members in the expanded College Football Playoff. The committee is also recommending the deregulation of the maximum value of the awards provided by the CFP for participation in a postseason bowl. The current limit is $550. (link)

After weighing his options over the weekend, Florida A&M Football HC Willie Simmons is expected to take the RB AC position at Duke. Simmons received $135K in bonuses this season, including $100K for winning the Celebration Bowl. (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders reflects on the season and tells People Magazine ahead of the debut of the second season of Coach Prime: “You always wish that you had a little more privacy, but the same thing that makes you shine will show your blemishes. [The season] was a whirlwind early on. Then it calmed down to a halt. We’re going to show you how we dealt with that adversity, it was tough because I’ve never lost pretty much in life, and in the last several years of my life, 10 years, decade, I’m a darn winner, so dealing with losses was tough. … There’s a process to all of it, and you have to go through certain processes of life to get to where you want to get to. It just doesn’t happen overnight. Contrary to what people may believe, success does not happen overnight.” (link)

UAB Football HC Trent Dilfer talks about his departure from ESPN and says he felt his influence resonated during the first five years, but then “TV got weird, man. It got people telling you what you should be talking about, what was important and what wasn’t important. It wasn’t about football all of a sudden. The politics in the building started determining what people got the chance to say what where. If it was a hot-button topic that Twitter was trending on at the time, then it made the front of the show, whether it was a premiere game or not. All these other things started creeping in…it just got overwhelming.” Dilfer acknowledges he made mistakes along the way, including getting involved with a contract negotiation and possibly overplaying his hand. “It just got funky at the end, and it was better for everybody that I was off TV. And I’m sure the 50% that hated me were like, ‘Great, get him off. Put the next bald guy on.’” Dilfer says of the impact NFL and college analysts have: “It’s the most narcissistic thing out there. I watched Fox News, CNN News and ESPN or whatever it is, and these people actually think they’re changing the world. And I’m here to tell you, no, you’re not. Like, nobody really cares. You’re either reinforcing something they believe or telling them something. You’re either pissing them off or making them happy. But you ain’t changing anybody for the better.” (link)

Six student-athletes on Idaho’s 2023 roster, three former players and a university employee allege Vandals Volleyball HC Chris Gonzalez “physically abused and bullied players, pressured injured players to play and train against the orders of the school’s sports medicine staff, regularly deprived players of food on road trips, body shamed players, made racially insensitive and inappropriate comments to players, and pressured sports medicine staff to share confidential information about players’ weight,” according the Orange County Register’s Scott M. Reid. One starter reportedly informed Vandals AD Terry Gawlik and other university officials that players “don’t feel safe” playing for Gonzalez, and Marissa Drange, an outside hitter on the 2022 team, says: “This is a pattern that isn’t something new.” Chelsey R. Mason, who played for Gonzalez at Iowa, adds: “Complaints levied against Christopher Gonzalez should not be dismissed as pouting or tempestuous outbursts thrown by teenagers and young adults, or overbearing, dissatisfied parents. These are evidence of unprofessional, abusive, manipulative practices that have spanned Gonzalez’s career. These are illustrations of Christopher Gonzalez’s character. These are cries for help.” The Southern California News Group asked Gawlik about the allegations and Gawlik responded: “As a general practice, the U of I takes every allegation seriously, investigates them, and responds as soon as possible.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy predicts Netflix will “continue to be more of a tease than a major player in the sports arena” in 2024. “The streamer will roll out more sports documentaries and occasional made-for-TV events, but it won’t match the billions of dollars Apple (MLS) and Amazon (NFL) have spent on live-game packages. Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson agrees that the timing isn’t quite right yet. “Netflix will not enter sports in a major way.” (link)
