Congratulations to Michigan on its College Football Playoff title last night in a 34-13 win over Washington. Wolverines HC Jim Harbaugh: “The off-the-field issues, we're innocent and we stood strong and tall because we knew we were innocent. And I'd like to point that out. And these guys are innocent. And overcome that, it wasn't that hard because we knew we were innocent. So yeah, that's really what I wanted to say. It went exactly how we wanted it to go. It went exactly how we wanted it to go. [...] I also want to point out, nothing fancy here. There was nothing surprising. It was just good old-fashioned teamwork, good old-fashioned hard work by these players and these coaches and none of us are up here taking a deep, long bow because we know this was just good old-fashioned teamwork.” (link); Harbaugh ends the season with $3M in on-field bonuses & $11.2M in total pay, per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz. (link); UM AD Warde Manuel on an extension for Harbaugh: “I’m going to let Jim and everyone celebrate tonight and we’ll deal with that when we deal with it.” (link)

ESPN’s Heather Dinich & Pete Thamel point to sources who say ESPN & the College Football Playoff are in negotiations to keep the Worldwide Leader as the sole rights holder for the next eight years, a period which would include the final two years of the current deal & six years of the property’s expanded format. Of particular note from the article: “A sublicense agreement was a sticking point that has been settled, according to sources. The agreement would give ESPN the ability to sell the rights to some of the games -- something Fox Sports would be interested in, sources indicated. (College Football Playoff Executive Director Bill) Hancock said that if ESPN were to sublicense any games, the presidents would have to approve it.” (link)

Eleven Warriors says the Ohio State AD search has reached the point of the Buckeyes beginning to “identify finalists” with on campus interviews set for later this month. New OSU President Ted Carter Jr.: “Acting president Peter Mohler did a great job of putting a search advisory team together. We are going to be getting into more details and you'll hear more about it soon.” Collegiate Sports Associates is the search firm of record. (link)

Basketball ratings guru Ken Pomeroy lauds WAC Commissioner Brian Thornton & league leadership for the WAC’s postseason transparent seeding system for Men’s & Women’s Basketball that rewards programs for non-conference wins “in proportion to the strength of the opponent and the location of the game” without factoring in margin of victory. Pomeroy: “The not-cool and bad systems are employed by the other 31 conferences where only a subset of games are considered for conference seeding. This season, teams like Princeton and McNeese State have had amazing non-conference runs, but those get completely forgotten once conference play starts. Both teams have brought glory (and power-ranking equity) to their league and earned nothing from it. The WAC system is better than the system used by any other league, and it’s also better system than the NCAA uses for its tournament, since the selection committee’s rewards for wins are unknown. You know that Gonzaga’s win over USC helped them, but you don’t know how much. On Selection Sunday, even committee members won’t be able to say, because it’s all subjective and impossibly complicated for humans to analyze.” Note: Pomeroy worked with the league to create the system. Lots more. (link)

Grambling State recently promoted an upcoming broadcast of a hoops double-header as appearing on Urban Edge Network’s HBCU+, the OTT network which has been involved in litigation with the SWAC in recent years. As such, the league sent GSU a reprimand threatening sanctions if it broadcasted a game on the third-party network. According to HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither, “The potential sanctions included forfeiting all conference financial distributions, loss of SWAC championship eligibility, and a recouping of damages and expenses by the Southwestern Athletic Conference.” The game aired on the Tigers’ YouTube page, instead. Representatives of UEN responded to the SWAC, asking for documents to support the league’s claims that it had no right to broadcast the game. More. (link)

+ Washington AD Troy Dannen on the hire of new Deputy AD Haven Fields from Ball State: “I told [Fields] everybody said to me ‘Boy, you're lucky. You really walked into it.’ I said, ‘Haven, your first day, your first event is the media day for the national championship, and you're the football administrator.’ I think we both kind of felt like we fell into a pile of gold -- which we did. [...] My bingo card at the start of the football season, I certainly did not have any of these boxes on it. But that's one thing about having a life inside of athletics -- you wake up in the morning, you never know what to expect.” (link)

+ Major League Baseball has rejected a proposed $150M lifeline from Amazon to bail out bankrupt Diamond Sports. The New York Post’s Josh Kosman: “They rejected it because Amazon wanted a streaming deal for more than one year. … The bankrupt company could reject the MLB proposal and still try to work out a deal with Amazon, a Diamond lender said, but that would be difficult.” (link)

College Football Players Association Executive Director Jason Stahl is advocating for a system in which football student-athletes play football first, then pursue their education. In the current setup, Stahl argues many players “aren’t getting an education because football is the priority” and schools have been forced to create and fund a system that involves checking to make sure players go to class and relying on an “advising apparatus to make sure they get Cs in classes that are not valuable.” Sportico’s Michael McCann points out that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito made a similar observation during oral arguments of the Alston case when he said: student-athletes “face training requirements that leave little time or energy for study, constant pressure to put sports above study, pressure to drop out of hard majors and hard classes, really shockingly low graduation rates.” If players are classified as employees and allowed to unionize, Stahl says they could simply work as players, then pursue their education unencumbered by sports when their playing careers end, whether that’s in college or the pros. Stahl also tells McCann: “Coco Gauff is the highest paid female athlete in the world. She’s 19-years-old. No one ever asks, ‘How is she going to spend that money?’ But we ask that about college football players—there is a paternalistic attitude [about them].” Stahl notes that many players come from poorer backgrounds and “could use this money” when they’re in their late teens and early 20s. Legal Matters…
+ Former Cal State Northridge Women’s Soccer HC Keith West is suing the school, alleging he was wrongfully fired in 2022 in retaliation for exposing alleged wrongdoing at the institution, “including being told to recruit someone whose uncles were likely to be generous school donors” according to My News LA. Per the suit, former CSUN AD Michael Izzi told West, “What’s a $20,000 scholarship for a $50,000 donation?” West also names the Board of Trustees of CSU as a defendant in the Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit, which alleges whistleblower retaliation, discrimination, harassment and breach of contract. He seeks unspecified damages. (link)
+ Embattled Illinois Men’s Basketball student-athlete Terrence Shannon Jr. has filed a motion for a temporary restraining order against the school to allow him to return to the court immediately. When prompted for his opinion on the judicial process, Sportico’s Michael McCann offered: “I’d want to review the court petition if one is filed but (as you know) there is no legal right to play a college sport and (within reason/due process) colleges have a lot of discretion to suspend students from activities, including sports. Here the player was charged with rape.” (link, link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel acknowledges making it to the College Football Playoff title game is sweeter given all of the off-field challenges the program has faced this season. “Not only did [the team] have to play and compete on the field of play, they had to listen to all the noise and everything that was going on, deal with issues that were there in front of them, in front of us, and I'm just so proud of how they handled it, compartmentalized it.” Manuel also talks about the difficulties the team faced during the COVID season and tells the Big Ten Network’s Dave Revsine: “I wasn’t going to get rid of Jim Harbaugh during COVID because we were 2-4 with everything going on around us. It wasn’t the right thing to do. Jim's a great person, a great coach. … Where does it get to people not understanding the circumstances surrounding that year didn’t change Jim as a coach but changed the way you managed that season. So, I loved him then, I love him now, he’s had tremendous success and I’m proud of him.” Manuel says that success has been validating “because I believed in Jim as a coach and his ability to produce what we have had in the past three years – and even before COVID we had great success, we just didn’t beat one team.” (link)

College Football Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock decries the “profanity-laced emails and calls” members of the CFP Selection Committee received following the announcement of the four-team field. “It’s ridiculous. Every NCAA sports committee receives criticism from the teams left out. I’ve been doing this for 35 years now. I’ve seen it and understand it, but this one…I haven’t seen anything like this one.” Hancock says CFP officials have been in contact with the FBI regarding the threats committee members have received and is “totally disappointed” by the accusations and vitriolic rhetoric from politicians in Florida over Florida State’s snub. Also from Houston, CFP officials delayed a vote to adopt a 5+7 format for next year’s playoff; however, Mississippi State President/CFP Board of Managers Chair Mark Keenum says he would be “shocked” if the 5+7 model isn’t approved in the next two to three weeks. The board did accept a recommendation from commissioners that conferences must have at least eight members to be eligible for a CFP AQ. It also “sent back down to commissioners a concept that would prevent SMU from receiving additional revenue from the CFP as a Power 5 team,” per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. (link)

The Pac-12 stands to make $18.5M from the College Football Playoff this year, including $11.7M from Washington’s berth in the title game and Oregon’s selection for the Fiesta Bowl, and Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Daniel Libit wonder whether either school will ever receive that money. “The CFP distributes its bowl-related payouts in April, which is likely after the agreement [between the Pac-2 and the 10 outbound members] is finalized but still part of the Pac-12’s current fiscal year, and it’s unclear if the money from these games will be considered shared revenue or future income. A representative for Washington State, one of the two remaining members, said in an email that many in the Cougars athletic department believe it will be shared across all current Pac-12 schools. Representatives for the Pac-12 and Washington declined to comment. An Oregon athletics spokesman referred questions to the conference.” Novy-Williams and Libit observe the $18.55M is ultimately “relatively small in the grand scheme of the financials at play,” with each school presumably set to receive $1.54M after it’s split 12 ways, but $1.54M is nearly 25% of the $6.5M UW and UO will likely owe the Pac-12 under the current settlement agreement. “It’s also slightly more than what Washington said it spent on all football recruiting in 2021-22.” (link)

As Washington State and Oregon State explore their media rights possibilities for next season, JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher observes: “Given that the two schools just won a $255M settlement, I expect they may be willing to trade some revenue for better exposure. They need to make sure they don’t disappear from television next season. I’m told by a source that OSU and WSU had some talks with multiple potential media partners, but don’t have anything firm in place at this point. Said the source: ‘It’s a very tight market right now.’” Canzano notes that Fox and CBS may want to add some inventory, but that buying all the games carries some risk. “If the two teams aren’t great next season, for example, the networks are stuck with them for the season. It’s more likely that the Beavers and Cougars sell individual games as à la carte offerings to Fox, CBS, and other networks such as ESPN. They may even dive into streaming.” As far as rebuilding the conference goes, Canzano points out the two schools will likely “lean into the two-year NCAA grace period. … If football does splinter away from the other sports as Chip Kelly has suggested, OSU and WSU might not have to pay big exit fees and add members. There’s a lot of strategy to be sorted out in the next 6-12 months.” (link)

Florida AD Scott Stricklin joins ESPN Gainesville to discuss several topics, including planned renovations to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Stricklin explains that while there have been mentions of reducing capacity, that’s “not the goal. The goal is to be in a situation where we can have the same number of Gator fans that have been coming the last 30 years to be able to continue to come. So, in a perfect world we don't impact capacity negatively. … We also understand that the Swamp is a bit of a public trust. It is such an iconic venue and you've heard me reference Fenway Park and Wrigley Field and Lambeau Field.” Stricklin cites the redesign of Soldier Field as an example of what not to do “whereas Lambeau, the Packers, they had this historic stadium, which happens to be the oldest in the NFL, and they renovated and updated it and it feels like it's always felt. It’s just they've done some upgrades and the term that I think of is more of a restoration. That's what I see us doing with the Swamp.” In response to one caller who asks why Stricklin doesn’t do more media events given that his contract purportedly includes $200K for media availability, Stricklin says he’s not turned down any media requests. “I’m pretty available. I talk to the media at basketball games, home events. … I don’t hide.” Full interview. (link)

William & Mary AD Brian Mann acknowledges he’s disappointed that James Madison and Delaware chose to leave the the conference, but “for us, we remain committed to the CAA, as we have been for a long time, and believe that it’s our job to do everything we can to strengthen that conference as much as possible now. … We’ve grown in addition to some of the departures we’ve had, and to me there’s a great opportunity there for us as a conference to evolve into something new and something different. And I don’t think we’re quite there yet. I don’t think we quite know exactly what the CAA is going to look like.” Mann goes on to note that “college athletics is changing at a pace that none of us are used to. … For me, that means I need to do everything in my power to keep my eye on the future and on that landscape and do whatever I can to make sure I’m positioning William & Mary as well as possible for the future, and I will do that.” (link)

Murray State has received a $1.25M gift from Tommy and Sandy Draffen to support the newly announced Roy Stewart Stadium weight room renovation and secure the naming rights for the Draffen Family Performance Center. The gift is the largest single investment in Racers athletics in the department’s history. The weight room itself is expected to be completed this summer and will feature state-of-the-art weight equipment and machines, including new racks, plates, dumbbells, benches and more, that will be utilized by every Racer program. Former LSU Assoc. AD for Football Recruiting and Alumni Relations Sharon Lewis and her attorney, Larry English, have been ordered to pay former Tigers Football HC Les Miles up to $200K after a judge found that Lewis’ allegations that LSU covered up sexual harassment accusations against Miles had no merit. Miles: “The fiction novel Sharon Lewis authored as an attempt at corrupt financial gain ended today. I was awarded $200K against Lewis and attorney, Larry English. The ruling provides clarity about Lewis’ persistent misrepresentation of the man I am. Justice is victory for all of us – a powerful reminder that truth vindicates.” Lewis: "I knew taking on LSU in Baton Rouge would be challenging, but I did not believe I would be subjected to this level of racism from two judges whose duty it was to ensure I received a fair trial. I will not be bullied into abandoning my pursuit for justice. I remain confident I will prevail.” (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ The Athletic’s Justin Williams examines the “25-year bull market” for college football coaches, noting that “in January 2007, Alabama gave Nick Saban an eight-year, $32M, fully guaranteed contract to woo him away from the Miami Dolphins and the NFL, making him the sport’s highest-paid coach. Less than two decades later, more than 50 Division I coaches have annual salaries over $4M. Saban, who has won six national titles since 2007, still topped that list at $11.4M in 2023.” One source with experience negotiating coaches’ contracts on behalf of universities tells Williams: “In the NFL, it’s mostly about the players. If you have the best quarterback and best players, you win. But in college football, there is nothing more important than getting the right coach. … There are a small number of college coaches in that elite category. If you have one, you’re probably going to win. But that also lifts up the bottom of the market.” Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick adds: “Losing is really expensive. Really expensive. So when you think you’ve got the right guy, they have a lot of leverage, because you can’t afford to lose.” Longtime agent Leigh Steinberg adds: “People will argue there is no position in sports with as much responsibility as a college football head coach. That job is incredibly complex.” Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork also weighs in: “Everybody wants to say, ‘We’ve got our person. We’ve got our coach, and he’s here to stay,’ versus saying, ‘Hey, nothing lasts forever.’ It’s almost like we’ve set up a built-in insecurity, which leads to long-form contracts that are 10 years, fully guaranteed.” More. + Missouri Football HC Eli Drinkwitz will earn $9M in 2024 and 2025 and his salary will increase by $250K in 2026 and 2028, according to the Columbia Tribune’s Calum McAndrew, who reports the deal is worth a total of $46M. As was the case in his previous contract, Drinkwitz will be owed 75% of his remaining pay should the university let him go without cause. That number currently stands at $34.5M. If Drinkwitz leaves Mizzou for another job before Dec. 1, 2025, he owes the university $5M. That figure decreases to $4M until Dec. 1, 2027; to $3M until Dec. 1, 2028; and to $1M on Jan. 15, 2029. As far as bonuses, Drinkwitz can earn $250K for a first-round College Football Playoff appearance. If he makes the quarterfinals, he’ll earn another $300K, and a semifinal berth is worth $450K. Should Missouri make the national title game, Drinkwitz will earn $600K, and if the Tigers win it all, he’s in line for $750K. (link)

2024 will be “ESPN’s year” in sports media, according to outgoing SBJ headliner John Ourand, who observes the network will face “several massive decisions — from rights deals to carriage deals to corporate mergers — that will have huge reverberations throughout the sports media business.” As part of his predictions for the year, Ourand believes that “despite pressure to accelerate the launch of its flagship channels’ direct-to-consumer service, ESPN keeps to its original plan to launch in the summer of 2025.” Ourand also predicts ESPN will secure rights to the College Football Playoff. “For the better part of a year, it’s been assumed that ESPN and Fox will split the expanded College Football Playoff. But Fox has not been as aggressive as originally thought, and Amazon, NBC and Turner will fall below ESPN’s bid. Once it completes its CFP deal, look for ESPN to sell some of the early-round games to other media companies.” More in Ourand’s final SBJ column. (link)

The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch reads his own 2024 tea leaves and predicts women’s volleyball will continue to surge at the collegiate level: “Smart sports-specific media companies will get in now, and those that are in (such as ESPN and the Big Ten Network) are sitting on profits if they play it right. This was the first year women’s college volleyball got great programming windows, and look at the result: The championship match between Texas and Nebraska — the first NCAA volleyball championship to be broadcast on ABC — set a TV viewership record for women’s college volleyball, averaging 1.7M viewers” despite going up against Sunday NFL programming. Moreover, Deitsch notes that, per ESPN, female viewership was up 151% from 2022 and comprised 51% of the audience. (link)
