Point Park has received an invite from the Mountain East (NCAA DII) to move to the NCAA starting next academic year, pending approval into the membership process. PPU President Chris Brussalis: “We will, of course, pursue this incredible opportunity by taking the next step, which is to apply for membership into the NCAA. The Mountain East is one of the most respected Division II conferences in the country and joining the NCAA would undoubtedly raise the profile of Point Park, attaching an additional layer of prominence to both our University and its athletic programs. We are pleased to provide the MEC a Pennsylvania member and to renew a number of old non-conference rivalries while significantly reducing missed class time and travel for our student-athletes.” (link)

With the dissolution of the North Star, Valley City State plans to have its next move made by the spring, which could include a move to NCAA DII. AD/Football HC Dennis McCulloch tells The Dickinson Press’ Eric Peterson the Vikings are using an outside consultant to explore the viability of such a move. McCullough also on VCSU’s $700K operating budget and a move to DII: “Scholarship-wise, we’re not that far off from the basic (level), here’s what it would take, the minimum. But do you want to be competitive, too? Those are things you’ve got to weigh out. I don’t want to go anywhere to get your butt beat. I’m a competitive person.” (link)

Avila will add Men’s and Women’s Tennis starting next year, expanding the Eagles’ portfolio to 16 programs. AD Shawn Summe: “This allows us to jump into conference competition starting immediately this year.  This also gives high school tennis players from the Kansas City metro area an opportunity to stay close to home and compete at the collegiate level against good competition. […] We have had quite a few recruits reach out and ask about tennis and if we have looked at starting it back up, and at this time, it makes sense to bring it back to our campus. Now, we will work towards hiring a coach early this semester and start recruiting towards filling out rosters on both sides.” (link)

The Washington Post’s Dave Sheinin and Emily Giambalvo take a look at the declining rate of youth football participation nationwide and note that “boys in the most conservative, poorest states continue to play high school tackle football at higher rates than those in wealthier and more politically liberal areas. … And while precise data about football’s racial makeup is hard to come by, the demographics appear to be gradually shifting. Among kids and teens, White and Black males are playing tackle football at declining rates, while Hispanic boys increasingly take up the sport. In college, the proportion of White players is declining, and that of Black players rising, at faster rates than national demographic changes.” They also note that “high-schoolers in states that voted for former president Donald Trump in 2020 played football last year at a rate roughly 1.5 times as high as those in states that went for President Biden. … Poll results revealed that liberals are increasingly more likely to discourage children from playing football, while conservatives are just about as likely to recommend the sport now as in 2012.” Skidmore sociology professor Andrew M. Linder: “There seems to be a very disturbing possibility that who your dad voted for [in the presidential election] could influence your risk for a very serious [football-related] ailment or injury.” While a September report indicated high school football participation was up 5% since 2021, it remains down 17% since 2006. Since 2013, high school participation has fallen in every state except Alabama and Mississippi, where it is up 18% and 20%, respectively. Lots more in the full analysis. (link)
