Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes says he was skeptical of the estimated values being tossed around for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament as a standalone property, particularly as cord cutting continues. “Some of these numbers people were talking about were not realistic. … This is worth more to ESPN as a bundle than it would be if the women’s basketball tournament was probably broken out and offered to fill in the blank (network). Where’s it going to go? There’s not a lot of programming windows available for it. Who’s going to program that and pay?” Endeavor EVP for Content Strategy and Development Karen Brodkin adds that estimates that a standalone WBB tourney was worth $81-112M set unrealistic expectations, and IMG Media EVP Hillary Mandel notes it’s “important to know that the exercise was done, and it was looked at and they were open to (unbundling) and there were no sacred cows in this whatsoever. And where they landed is because ESPN came up with the best package for the women’s basketball championship.” NCAA President Charlie Baker puts it like this: “Yes, it’s a bundle, but it’s a bigger bundle and it’s a bigger bundle that will be much better.” (link); Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson: “The overlooked part that many seem to be missing is that WBB and MBB will both now expire in 2032. Sets NCAA up for all sorts of options.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit takes a deep dive into collective operator Blueprint Sports and how its relationship with its companion charity, the tax-exempt BPS Foundation, is raising concerns about a conflict of interest. Libit: “In effect, the BPS Foundation serves as a donor-advised fund for college sports boosters who want to contribute to for-profit NIL collectives. Instead of making the contribution to the collective directly, they would instead donate to the nonprofit, which would then be responsible for paying athletes served by the collective.” Pittsburgh law professor Phil Hackney tells Libit that “setting it up in this way should raise concerns of the IRS memorandum at a higher level, if anything.” Blueprint Co-Founder Rob Sine, who also serves as the BPS Foundation’s president, maintains that “we continue to believe that we are one of the good guys in the business and are doing this the right way and helping to make sure that there's a sustainable future for it.” As of now, the setup appears to be compliant with the IRS’ guidelines, and Sine believes the foundation would continue to flourish even if it loses its tax-exempt status. Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) Founder Jason Belzer, however, submits that the relationship between the collective operator and the nonprofit is risky. “As we understand today, they are operating within the law, and kudos for them. … But we don’t view that as a long-term sustainable business opportunity, and if we feel something is not ethically aligned with our long-term business strategy, we are not going to engage in that business today or tomorrow.” (link)

Miami (OH) will begin offering Men’s Basketball student-athletes Alston awards (nearly $6K per year) if they hit academic markers thanks to a $2M gift from alums Brian & Jennifer Niccol. Distribution details: “Half of that will go to the players each year who are deemed eligible with the other half going into a separate fund and awarded to the student-athletes after they graduate.” Also from the release: “(Redhawks AD David) Sayler believes that Miami’s money will be more significant to recruits when they find out it is from alumni. ‘It means more to recruits when we can tell them that alums stepped up and did this for them, and not just for them, but for everybody who’s ever going to play here.’” Brian Niccol is the CEO of notable QSR chain Chipotle Mexican Grill. Atlantic 10 Director of NCAA Compliance and Student Services Erin Goodman joins Extra Points publisher Matt Brown to discuss her career path from athletic training to compliance, the issue of retention in the profession, the challenges associated with jobs in athletic training and more. Goodman explains she transitioned to compliance to achieve a better work-life balance and notes athletic trainers are “standing up for themselves now and saying we need and deserve to be paid more.” Upon the advent of NIL, Goodman points out athletic departments “rushed to create these NIL positions and it kind of made me sad because why were sports medicine positions not created beforehand? But then you get into the pandemic and there's mental health challenges and what are we doing to support student athletes in that space, and…I think athletic departments are looking holistically at ‘how can we support our student athletes?’ We know there’s a mental health crisis, we know that NIL is contributing to that, now we have sports wagering conversations contributing to that. So I think really athletic departments need to be investing in all aspects, and I think athletic training is kind of the front line of that.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

D1Baseball’s Joe Healy reports from the ABCA Convention there will be an “interesting tweak to how games will be grouped on the selection committee team sheets. The quads will now take home, neutral or road into account. Previously, it had been broken up just by RPI. There’s also a change to requirements for visiting teams in regionals. Teams must be in hotels rather than campus housing. Hotels must be within 30 miles of venue, but no longer have to be within 30 minutes.” (link, link); D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers adds: “SCOOP: It was not discussed at the annual NCAA Division I Business Meeting tonight, but am told the Division I Selection Committee proposed penalties for teams cancelling games for RPI reasons. However, the Championship Oversight Committee declined that proposal.” (link)

Here are some of the key takeaways from Morning Consult’s report on Gen Z’s engagement with social media, entertainment and technology: Gen Z social media use remains very high and is entertainment-centric, with review videos most effectively capturing their attention. Their video preferences differ from older cohorts with similarly high shares of Gen Zers reporting monthly use of Disney+, Prime Video and Hulu. They’re also early AI adopters, with more than half of Gen Zers indicating they have used a generative AI tool in the past month. Despite barriers to entry, Gen Zers find these tools fun, helpful and easy to use. Gen Z sports viewership still lags, but there’s reason for optimism, per Morning Consult. While the generation is less interested in live sports than older cohorts, some leagues (and athletes) are resonating especially well with them. (link)

The FAFSA rollout has been plagued with problems since its “soft launch” on December 30. Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox and Katherine Knott report the website has only been available for limited windows while periodic “maintenance pauses” have locked students out for all but a few hours each day. So far, more than 400K people have started or completed applications, according to Education Department data. More than 150K applications were submitted by the end of Tuesday, and more than 17M students are expected to complete the application this year. Edvisors SVP/Publisher Mark Kantrowitz, who played a role in launching the first online FAFSA in 1997: “As far as I’m concerned, this is a failed launch. The form is not fully open, and parents and students see it that way, too. … When you’re doing something this major and have approval from Congress years in advance, and you’re still not ready when the time comes, something must have gone very wrong.” (link)

Cleveland State AD Scott Garrett has accepted the Deputy AD for Administration position at Wake Forest. Demon Deacons AD John Currie: “Scott is a servant leader who has proven his strategic assessment skills and a thoughtful management style in hiring successful head coaches and dozens of staff members in his nearly five years at Cleveland State. [...] Scott's tested leadership experience both on campus and across intercollegiate athletics, relationship building skills, and collaborative style will be the perfect complement to our veteran executive leadership team at Wake Forest.” Garrett will remain at CSU through January 15. Indiana State and former AD Sherard Clinkscales mutually agreed that Clinkscales would resign, according to a separation and release agreement signed by both parties on January 1. The separation agreement also states that ISU agreed to pay Clinkscales $165,979 in severance as well as other benefits and considerations. The severance, per the Tribune-Star’s Mark Bennett, "compensates Mr. Clinkscales for 50% of his base salary for the remaining 18 months.” The agreement also includes a non-disparagement clause for both parties. The NCAA and ESPN agree to a new eight-year, $920M media rights deal that encompasses 40 college sports championships, including women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball. According to NCAA President Charlie Baker, the agreement is worth an average of $115M annually, nearly three times the value of the current contract. The pact includes rights to 21 women's championships and 19 men's championships and also includes the FCS title game airing on ABC, more than 800 hours of NCAA championships appearing on ESPN linear networks throughout the year and more than 2,300 hours combined on linear and digital platforms. The men’s hoops NIT and Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament are also included. (link); SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Also of note, this NCAA agreement is set to conclude at the same time as the domestic rights for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament presently owned by CBS and Warner Bros. Discovery, allowing the NCAA great flexibility in its next round of negotiations.” Given the increase in value, NCAA members will explore revenue distribution units for the women's basketball tournament. The Division I Board of Directors Finance committee began discussion of revenue distribution philosophies and new models this year, and those discussions will continue with membership in the coming year. NCAA President Charlie Baker: “What we had always said was we wanted the best deal for all of our championships. If you think about it, it's [2,300] hours of programming, which over the eight years of the deal will take place in an enormous number of settings with a whole variety of challenges and on the ground circumstances that make this something where if you can get a production partner who's willing to bite the whole thing off at a price that we believe is more than market competitive, we thought that was a better way to go.” (link, link, link)

The DI Board of Directors will discuss NCAA President Charlie Baker’s player compensation proposal when it meets next week and “determine whether to charge the Division I Council, or another body, with developing recommendations related to the framework of the proposal — a decision that will initiate a potentially yearlong activation process and chart a course for one of the most radical changes in NCAA history,” Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports. According to NCAA Convention documents, the initial focus would be on the proposal’s first two components, namely those which allow schools to ink NIL deals with student-athletes and provide them with compensation in the form of enhanced educational benefits. The process of adopting a new subdivision would be subsequent to the adoption of the first two concepts. According to the timeline obtained by Dellenger, the DI Council, if given authority to further explore the proposal, will produce final recommendations at the June 25-26 Board of Directors meeting. The board would then take action on those recommendations by August, with action on the new subdivision structure slated to take place at next year’s NCAA Convention. More from Dellenger. (link)

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has sent a public records request seeking all ACC “financial, business, and membership records” relating to Florida State, including the grant of rights and communications with ESPN. Moody: “One of Florida’s top universities is facing the possibility of forfeiting more than half a billion dollars, and the ACC is refusing to hand over the agreements at the center of this astronomical financial penalty. They are unlawfully keeping these documents locked away in North Carolina. However, North Carolina and Florida state laws are clear that these agreements are public records and must be handed over immediately. Today, I am taking action to ensure FSU and the public are able to review these agreements.” (link)

Maryland AD Damon Evans made his weekly appearance with Vinny and Haynie on 105.7 The Fan, and says of recruiting becoming increasingly transactional: “I still believe it's about relationships. I just believe there's another component that's been added to it that makes it a little bit more challenging. And so you still have to have the relationship, but make no mistake about it – NIL plays a significant role in what is happening in college athletics nowadays. I'm not going to shy away from it. It's not what we're all used to, but it is the new frontier for us. So again, as I said earlier, you can't complain. You got to find solutions.” Evans also calls on the fans to help on the NIL front. “I'm only hopeful that they'll continue to step up and want to thank those who have. But we need those who haven’t to really step up and help us. Football, basketball, all of our sports across the board.” (link)

Amer Sports, the parent company of 11 sports brands including Louisville Slugger, Wilson and Salomon, has filed for an IPO on the New York Stock Exchange. While the initial paperwork doesn’t yet list an offering size, Sportico’s Brendan Coffey notes it has been “widely reported that Finland-based Amer is seeking a $10B valuation. … The IPO proceeds will go to repay more than $4B in loans the business has on its books, stemming from the buyout by the Wilson-Chinese consortium, according to the prospectus.” The combined business generated $3.55B in revenue in 2022. Idaho has engaged an outside law firm to investigate the women’s volleyball program under HC Chris Gonzalez and says in a statement: “The University of Idaho is deeply concerned about the allegations brought by some members of the women’s volleyball team against their coach, Chris Gonzalez. As a result, an investigation started in November around legal issues and has been expanded to include climate and culture concerns. The start of the investigation was delayed at the request of those who filed the complaints, in order to finish the season. An outside investigative team is doing the investigation, in which Coach Gonzalez is fully cooperating. While they have been asked to expedite the investigation, we also do not want to forego quality for speed.” (link)

Former Notre Dame Men’s Basketball HC Mike Brey talks about his departure from South Bend and says discussions with USF never advanced to a stage where he was in a position to take or decline the job. “I went down there on my own dime. I did TV up in New York and flew down. I'm going, let's see, I’ll take this job and my grandsons can be ballboys. If I get fired in two years, heck, I’m still living in Tampa. Then I'm like, (screw) it. You can't look at it like that. … There was never a contract issue with me leaving Notre Dame. My stuff with Notre Dame, to Jack Swarbrick’s credit, he kept me on salary for another two months, which was great. I had no buyout either way. There was no buyout. I had been there long enough where there were no contractual obligations. Look, the money we all made in college athletics, we were stealing.” Is a return to college in his future? “My agent called me a month ago and said that people are going to start asking about you coming back to college. I really don't want to do it. I just don't feel it. Never say never, but that was another life. I have no desire to go back and be the head guy again, be the voice. That's not moving me right now.” (link)
