Former Duke AD Kevin White shares an essay on the future of college sports with the News & Observer in which he characterizes the current situation as an “arms race to construct the next paradigm/model,” adding: “There is undeniably a need to recreate, perhaps relaunch the NCAA. This parent organization needs to become far more contemporary, if not anticipatory, for the world is clearly ever changing. … College athletics, should all the sitcom players be earnest and honest, would agree the ’functionality’ has now become unhinged, chaotic, and uneven, whereby there are a number of existing lawsuits facing the parent organization.” Regarding the possible bifurcation of athletics and academics, White writes: “The two paramount positions I endeavored to stake out for the Knight Commission were that college athletics needed to remain, in total, very much a part of the Academy, with no carve outs. Secondly, reengaging well-seasoned practitioners within the oversight process was critical. … Today, this relationship, I would argue, is at risk, and may be heading toward an untenable position. Once again, the august USA system is the envy of the world, for we are at this point the only country in the world that has successfully aligned, if not combined, the school with sport model.” White goes on to submit that “in one individual’s anecdotal opinion, arguably without empirical data, it will be the beginning of the end, should college football, men’s college basketball, women’s college basketball, and/or any other segmented part separate from American Higher Education.” (link)

The College Football Playoff Management Committee is expected to formally approve a 5+7 format for the 12-team playoff beginning next season as well as adopt a policy requiring conferences to have at least eight members to be eligible for an AQ. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports the committee is also expected to discuss whether SMU will receive an increased payout as a Power 5 member. In the past, schools making the Group of 5 to Power 5 leap have seen their CFP distributions increase from $1M to $6M. “However, after a discussion among CFP commissioners on Nov. 9, SMU did not garner the necessary support for additional revenue distribution. The issue has now been shifted to the commissioners’ corresponding presidents on the CFP Board of Managers, the playoff’s highest governing body made up of a school president from each FBS conference and Notre Dame.” While several commissioners and CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock declined to comment on the matter, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey tells Dellenger: “You have to have a unanimous vote to alter revenue distribution and diminish somebody else’s revenue. That’s it.” Dellenger observes that “if the CFP does deny SMU’s Power 5 funding, the association sets a moratorium on additional revenue for those schools elevating from Group of 5 to Power 5 — a policy likely to even span into a new CFP contract starting in 2026. The move is yet another sign that college leaders are attempting to restrict Division I’s highest body from further expansion.” (link)

Former CBS Sports President Neal Pilson talks about the NCAA-ESPN deal as a whole and tells On3’s Eric Prisbell: “I’m sure ESPN used its leverage with the other NCAA championships – which have only limited revenue prospects – to make the deal for the women’s basketball tournament that is a nice increase but not what the NCAA could have realized if it had bid out those rights separately. For major sports properties – and I consider the women’s tournament a major property – the bid process almost always generates more revenue than simply renegotiating with the current rightsholder. I expect women’s sports groups will make that point and criticize the deal. However, all the other women’s sports under the NCAA umbrella will benefit from the package with the tournament.” (link)

The NCAA has released a historical membership dashboard that includes high-level details and summary information on every NCAA member school and conference. Displayed as a map, the dashboard allows users to view historical membership data by year, division, school, region, conference and state going back to 1906. Some nuggets from the dashboard: The NCAA started with 39 charter members in 1906 and reached 80 schools by 1912. In 1921, the NCAA surpassed the 100-member mark, and the first historically Black college and university conference joined. The 1920s saw positive gains in membership, followed by a decline in the early years of the Great Depression. And in 2002, the NCAA surpassed the 1,000-member threshold, a figure that remained consistent over the next 15 years. (link)

Utah Valley AD Jared Sumsion joins ESPN 960 and says the bid is out for construction of a new $28M soccer stadium, which the Wolverines hope to have completed in time for the 2025 season. Sumsion also reveals that multiple UVU HCs have turned down Power 5 jobs, including Baseball HC Eddie Smith and Women’s Soccer HC Chris Lemay, and says: “It’s really not just about money with some of these coaches. And a lot of times it is, but with some of the coaches that we hire we look for people that want to build something special and…the second Eddie stepped foot on our campus he was like, ‘I can win here and this place is gorgeous.’ And if you will follow him on social media – I mean there's probably not a better coach that does social media in the entire country because he meets his student athletes and prospective recruits where they are, which is on social media. … I think there’s times where we’re a better option for people, and I think that we’re building something really special here.” (link)

Former Texas A&M Football HC Jimbo Fisher covered several topics on Barstool’s Pardon My Take, including the chaos of the transfer portal, about which he says: “Think if every contract in the NFL right now was negotiable. It is unbelievable. And people are tampering with players. College football right now, it needs a commissioner. And we need to do this thing the right way. “Go get your 50 or 60 teams – whoever is going to be in Division I – and make it more like the NFL. Intertwine your leagues of play a lot more so you can get a true playoff picture and play more like you do with the NFL and do it the right way.” Asked what he would say to “Sliced Bread,” Fisher remarked: “College football changed on a lie. I am going to write a book on this one day. I am going to write a book. When he wrote those numbers, I said, ‘My God, where is it at?’ … The amount of NIL deals at A&M at that time in all sports combined – he said we (bought) our class with $35M. There was right at $1M for all sports combined (at A&M). “And here is the big thing: all of the media went and ran with that story as truthful without ever checking it. And I am talking about the big dogs. I am talking about all of the people we regarded as highly-respected guys. College football changed on a lie.” More from Fisher. (link)

+ FGCU has placed Men’s Tennis HC Davidson Kozlowski on administrative leave as the NCAA investigates whether Kozlowski is responsible for rules violations. The issue in question is whether Bucknell student-athlete Harrison Gold, who agreed to transfer to FGCU, came to Fort Myers early to practice with the team while still enrolled and taking classes at Bucknell. According to NBC 2, Gold also didn't have a place to stay in Southwest Florida and had been living in a hotel for the past two months. Kozlowski reportedly said he would reimburse Gold but never did and now FGCU allegedly owes Gold approximately $10K. Gold says Kozlowski then abruptly took away his spot on the team. (link)

The FCS Championship game will return to Frisco, Texas, in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, and the NCAA holds an option for the 2026 season, per Stats Perform’s Craig Haley. NCAA Director of Championships and Alliances for DI Football Ty Halpin says there is interest from other cities who would like to host. Halpin adds the NCAA would prefer the championship game, which is now locked into ABC broadcasts as part of the new media rights deal, not go head-to-head against the NFL on the final Sunday of the season. The NCAA Women’s Volleyball Committee is recommending allowing student-athletes to contact the ball “more than once with any part of the body in a single attempt on a team's second contact” to increase consistency of judgment calls and continuation of play, the designation of two liberos per set, officials to sanction home teams for spectators encroaching the area of play, adding interference above the net to be challenged by video review and more. The recommendations will go to the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel to consider next month. (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Katherine Sayre goes behind the scenes at the FanDuel sports-trading desks where traders create odds to influence and entice bets in a live market. The traders – self-styled sports buffs with a penchant for math – use FanDuel’s algorithms which simulate each play of a football game 10,000 times to try to predict the outcome, such as who might score a touchdown or how many yards a wide receiver might get. During a recent Miami Dolphins-Washington Commanders game, the company took a $1M hit, and trader Will Twinn says: “You have good days, bad days. It’s really about getting the prices right and let the cards fall where they may.” To adjust in-game betting odds on the fly, traders monitor each game. In the case of a recent New England Patriots game, the odds for the backup RB to score a touchdown were increased after starting RB Rhamondre Stevenson was helped off the field with an ankle injury. Twinn: “That’s information we didn’t know 15 minutes ago.” Overall, FanDuel says it takes about 1.5 seconds to receive a data point – i.e. what happens on the field – and about one second for its model to process the data and push out new odds. That information travels faster than the game broadcasts and streams viewers watch at home. More. (link)
