The NCAA and ESPN agree to a new eight-year, $920M media rights deal that encompasses 40 college sports championships, including including DI Women's Basketball, DII Football and increased coverage of DII Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball and Women's Volleyball, and international rights to those 40 events and the DI Men's Basketball Tournament. According to NCAA President Charlie Baker, the agreement is worth an average of $115M annually, nearly three times the value of the current contract. The pact includes rights to 21 women's championships and 19 men's championships, more than 800 hours of NCAA championships appearing on ESPN linear networks throughout the year and more than 2,300 hours combined on linear and digital platforms. NCAA President Charlie Baker: "The NCAA has worked in earnest over the past year to ensure that this new broadcast agreement provides the best possible outcome for all NCAA championships, and in particular women's championships. Over the past several years, ESPN has demonstrated increased investment in NCAA championship coverage, and the Association is pleased to continue to provide a platform for student-athletes to shine. Having one, multi-platform home to showcase our championships provides additional growth potential along with a greater experience for the viewer and our student-athletes." SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Also of note, this NCAA agreement is set to conclude at the same time as the domestic rights for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament presently owned by CBS and Warner Bros. Discovery, allowing the NCAA great flexibility in its next round of negotiations.” Given the increase in value, NCAA members will explore revenue distribution units for the women's basketball tournament. The Division I Board of Directors Finance committee began discussion of revenue distribution philosophies and new models this year, and those discussions will continue with membership in the coming year. The SIAC signs a multimedia rights partnership with HBCU GO and Allen Media Group to broadcast all SIAC team sports through 2032. The deal includes distribution of SIAC events on CBS stations in many key markets. Teamworks has acquired inventory management software FR TRAC for its inventory portfolio and announced a new partnership with Front Rush. Gannon has begun renovations on the Highmark Events Center which will include a complete transformation over the next year. President Walter Iwanenko: “This has been planning for about two years, so planning started a while ago when we were talking about this facility needing an upgrade. We have a fantastic partner with Highlight which helped make this all happen. […] It’s not only a benefit to our students but it’s a benefit to the downtown community. This is a great venue, 2,000 to 3,000 people, it fits a need that there’s not too many facilities like this.” The Golden Knights will compete at the nearby Haggerty Family Events Center until the facility reopens next January. The NCAA has released a historical membership dashboard that includes high-level details and summary information on every NCAA member school and conference. Displayed as a map, the dashboard allows users to view historical membership data by year, division, school, region, conference and state going back to 1906. Some nuggets from the dashboard: The NCAA started with 39 charter members in 1906 and reached 80 schools by 1912. In 1921, the NCAA surpassed the 100-member mark, and the first historically Black college and university conference joined. The 1920s saw positive gains in membership, followed by a decline in the early years of the Great Depression. And in 2002, the NCAA surpassed the 1,000-member threshold, a figure that remained consistent over the next 15 years. (link)

The NCAA Women’s Volleyball Committee is recommending allowing student-athletes to contact the ball “more than once with any part of the body in a single attempt on a team's second contact” to increase consistency of judgment calls and continuation of play, the designation of two liberos per set, officials to sanction home teams for spectators encroaching the area of play, adding interference above the net to be challenged by video review and more. The recommendations will go to the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel to consider next month. (link)

Here are some of the key takeaways from Morning Consult’s report on Gen Z’s engagement with social media, entertainment and technology: Gen Z social media use remains very high and is entertainment-centric, with review videos most effectively capturing their attention. Their video preferences differ from older cohorts with similarly high shares of Gen Zers reporting monthly use of Disney+, Prime Video and Hulu. They’re also early AI adopters, with more than half of Gen Zers indicating they have used a generative AI tool in the past month. Despite barriers to entry, Gen Zers find these tools fun, helpful and easy to use. Gen Z sports viewership still lags, but there’s reason for optimism, per Morning Consult. While the generation is less interested in live sports than older cohorts, some leagues (and athletes) are resonating especially well with them. (link)

The FAFSA rollout has been plagued with problems since its “soft launch” on December 30. Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox and Katherine Knott report the website has only been available for limited windows while periodic “maintenance pauses” have locked students out for all but a few hours each day. So far, more than 400K people have started or completed applications, according to Education Department data. More than 150K applications were submitted by the end of Tuesday, and more than 17M students are expected to complete the application this year. Edvisors SVP/Publisher Mark Kantrowitz, who played a role in launching the first online FAFSA in 1997: “As far as I’m concerned, this is a failed launch. The form is not fully open, and parents and students see it that way, too. … When you’re doing something this major and have approval from Congress years in advance, and you’re still not ready when the time comes, something must have gone very wrong.” (link)
