Iowa would like to have its AD search completed before the month is out, according to CollegeAD, which reports the university spoke with candidates virtually between Christmas and New Year’s. Interim AD Beth Goetz is still considered the frontrunner and, per CollegeAD, has “garnered the support of numerous Hawkeye coaches and staff” while serving in the interim role. (link)

Michigan’s national championship victory over Washington was the most-watched CFP title tilt in the past four years with an average of 25.1M viewers. That’s up 45% YoY and was surpassed in viewership only by the Wolverines’ Rose Bowl victory over Alabama. Sportico’s Anthony Crupi reports the game generated nearly $90M in total ad sales revenue for ESPN “as legacy CFP partners Allstate, AT&T, Geico, Taco Bell, Dr Pepper and Gatorade invested more than $800K for each 30-second in-game spot that aired Monday night. Dr Pepper, which was the very first brand that former ESPN ad sales boss Ed Erhardt signed as an official CFP partner back in March 2014, snapped up three spots. Fellow 10-year CFP backers Allstate and AT&T were among the biggest spenders, as the insurance company and the wireless carrier combined to lay down more than $10M.” (link); Per ESPN, the national championship peaked at 28M viewers and the three-game CFP was the most-watched since 2018. It also ranks in the top 15 cable telecasts of all-time and was the fourth best non-NFL sports telecast since 2018. (link)

Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson adds some context to reports that ESPN is seeking to acquire sole rights to the College Football Playoff for $1.3B per year: “When considering this new agreement, remember that currently, ESPN has separate TV deals with the CFP and the Sugar, Orange, and Rose Bowls. The Bowls then have a deal with CFP to host a semi every 3 years. The $$$'s floating around on the current CFP deal are often underreported because the three bowl deals aren't incorporated. [The AP’s Ralph Russo] reported on multiple occasions that ESPN pays an average of $470M to CFP and another $130M to Sugar, Orange, and Rose for a total of $600M AAV. I've seen higher numbers but we will go with these as it is one that folks in the sports TV business believe to be more applicable than the payment for just the $470M for the three CFP games. Based on a typical 4.5% annual increase, I would think that ESPN is paying a combined $716M this season and would pay $780M in the last year of the current deal. This is before any payment for the four additional games to be played in 2024 and 2025. It seems to me when you add four games and are coming off a 12-year deal the numbers being thrown around seem light. Just my opinion.” Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes agrees. “Would suggest there's an assumption that everyone wants this property & that it's a great fit (or at least part of it is) for a wide pool of possible Tier 1 partners. What if that assumption is off some? Also, only 1 potential partner can probably justify top figure exclusively.” (link)

Samford AD Martin Newton, who serves on the Men’s Basketball Committee, talks with Southern Conference Assoc. Commissioner for Brand Strategy and Broadcast Dave Friedman about his role on the committee and says when it comes to seeding AQs, such as Furman last season, it often is influenced by what happens in other leagues. “I think there was an upset in the Ivy League, there were some upsets in some other tournaments and so I was able to vote…what I thought based on not only the analytics, but on the eye test. … One thing that I think is probably not as well known is this committee watches a lot of basketball games. Not just Power 5 games.” Newton says he’s “watching those games trying to understand what their strengths and weaknesses are, looking at their analytics, and so by that time they came around not only was I familiar with Furman because I've seen them play in person, but I was also familiar with some of the other teams…and was able to take my SoCon hat off because, again, at the end of the day that's what we're charged to do. There's no bias in that room.” For the SoCon in particular, Newton explains it’s important to “win those games that you're supposed to win and make sure that if you are scheduling correctly in the non-conference that you have a winning record in the non-conference for Division I. … So, scheduling is really important knowing that you're not going to get as many opportunities as P5 to get Quad 1 opportunities.” Lots more from Newton, including the importance of having a strong league from top to bottom, especially when it comes to seeding. SMU Deputy AD for Internal Affairs Dawn Rogers and Southern Utah Deputy AD for External Relations/COO Marie Tuite sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss how they raise the bar and find new levels of success when transitioning to a new institution. Rogers and Tuite also discuss establishing trust with a new department, reinventing yourself after a gut-punch moment, and managing the emotional roller coaster that is college athletics. Tuite: “You can craft yourself any way you would like when you go into a new institution. You carry all the things that you did really well previously and maybe some things that you certainly would have liked to have done differently and then you start this new chapter and new phase in your life…it’s really a lot of fun.” When dealing with a difficult situation, Rogers talks about the importance of compartmentalization. “Some days you’re just going from meeting to meeting, and if you carry it from one meeting to the next meeting, you can ruin that next meeting. You can self-sabotage your whole day if you don't have that ability to just stop, compartmentalize,” and stay in the present. Full conversation on ADU. (link)

The Clemson-focused TigerImpact collective reported to the IRS that it received $3.95M in contributions in 2022, during which it facilitated $2.4M in NIL agreements with student-athletes for an average of roughly $37K per deal. Football student-athletes accounted for 539 of the 884 NIL deals disclosed to the university from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2023, according to The Post and Courier’s Jon Blau, who notes the overall number of deals for Clemson athletes increased from 375 in the first year of the NIL era to 509 in the second. The biggest upticks involved the deals valued between $1,000-$9,999 (from 63 to 163) and over $10K (from 69 to 117) from Year 1 to Year 2, per Blau. Football players accounted for 148 of the 226 known deals between $1,000-$9,999 and 131 of the 186 deals over $10K. Additionally, men’s basketball student-athletes reported 10 total deals in the first year of the NIL era and 17 in the second. The collective spent $297,454 on salaries and wages with $196,461 going to former Executive Director Bobby Couch. PR firm Hughes Agency received $185,343 for its services, and the collective had a balance of $1.814M at the end of 2022 with $1.2M earmarked for contracts yet to be fully paid out. (link)

Law360 updates on the situation with Chicago State MBB student-athletes Matt and Ryan Bewley. who were declared ineligible after receiving compensation for their NIL while competing with Overtime Elite Academy, a professional high school team. From in front of the paywall: “Two brothers, prompted by a recent ruling in a similar case, are asking an Illinois federal court to reconsider their motion for a temporary restraining order that would prohibit the NCAA from classifying them as ineligible to play college basketball. … “ (link)

Navigate CEO AJ Maestas took the stage at TEDxChicago to explore the lessons sports can teach about community and human behavior during a time when the world seems more divided than ever. Maestas explains that Navigate studies “what is today and what can be in the future of sport and entertainment” and has “come to the conclusion that sports fandom is not about excitement or championships” but about “belonging. … It's a pathway to community and connection. So, why does this matter? A metaanalysis of 16 independent longitudinal studies shows that poor social relationships are associated with a 29% increase in the risk of heart disease and a 32% chance risk of stroke. Even more disturbing, social isolation and chronic loneliness can increase your likelihood of developing dementia by 50%.” Maestas goes on to illustrate the communal nature of sports by pointing out that success is almost incidental to the feeling of belonging. For example, despite having never been to a Super Bowl, Cleveland Browns fans by and large indicated they would rather eat the following than be fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have won six of the eight Super Bowls in which they’ve played: rocks, cactus, glass, 100 scorpions and raw sewage. Maestas: “To become a fan is to gain citizenship in this massive and passionate community instantly. We need these bonds. They help us bridge generational gaps…[and]help us to see past things that often divide us like politics, religion or race.” More from Maestas. (link)

Several stakeholders tell On3’s Eric Prisbell they expect a yearlong process before many of the elements in NCAA President Charlie Baker’s proposal would be adopted, especially as it relates to the establishment of a new subdivision. One prominent stakeholder says “there’s definitely a push for [for bringing NIL in-house]. Like anything, there’s pros and cons to it. It’s a mixed bag. I see some benefits and also some impediments and issues. It would add some sustainability. But there are some hurdles, such as Title IX.” Greenfly Chief Revenue Officer Mark Keaney notes there continues to be calls for more clarity regarding Baker’s proposal. “With the Big Ten, we were going through the NIL rules of engagement for content, which is 78 pages long. I spent the weekend reading it. I got on the phone with the deputy commissioner and said, ‘I know less now than I did on Friday.’ It’s unbelievable.” There also remains the issue of how liability for universities fits into any new framework, and Athliance Co-Founder/CEO Sean Hughes tells Prisbell: “The clear example of that is that collectives help organize a deal with, like the Utah team where their entire team gets cars. Now, what happens if one of those 18 or 19-year-olds gets a DUI and [hurts] somebody in one of those cars? It’s an extreme example. But there’s very clear-cut liability issues with schools being involved in facilitating those deals.” (link)

More from Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh on sharing revenue with players, as he reiterated after winning the national championship that players need a voice in the process. Harbaugh believes that given the multitude of changes in the past year, it’s possible for players to gain that agency sooner rather than later. “These things could happen. Hopefully there will be some real – I mean, for a long time people say that unionizing would be bad. If people aren't going to do it – if they're not going to do it out of their own goodwill and do what's right – that's probably the next step. I have nothing against unions. That's the next step, fellas. I think that's the way you've gotta go. That's what I'd like to see change in college athletics.” Harbaugh also says he’d be glad to meet with industry stakeholders on the issue and notes he’s already talked with Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and former Congressman Fred Upton (R-MI). “Just trying to form people to talk about this and really just get on the side of the players. Coaches, hopefully they'll use their voice. More people. Just more. It's one thing we know. We need more for this cause.” (link)

WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the league’s two-year affiliation with Oregon State and Washington State, including how it came about, the reaction from student-athletes, how it positions the WCC within the overall landscape and lots more. Jackson: “If you look out into the future – and no one knows what’s going to happen with the ecosystem in the NCAA – but if there's a day perhaps where, as some people would say, football ends up being their own entity and other sports begin to play regionally, perhaps they'll look to the WCC and Oregon State and Washington State as a model that works because essentially being in a similar footprint affords that opportunity to take advantage of all those synergies and financial benefits that travel brings.” Full conversation now live on Connect. Student-athletes across the NCAA report a decrease in binge drinking and the usage of narcotic pain medication and spit tobacco, according to the association’s latest study, which had more than 23K participants across all three divisions. The use of narcotic pain medication by student-athletes has decreased in the past decade, with 6% of the respondents reporting use with a prescription within the previous year, down from a high of 18% in 2013. Overall, 15% of all men's sport student-athletes reported using spit tobacco within the last year, which is down from 22% in the 2017 study. The percentage of users has steadily decreased since 2009. Since 2009, self-reported rates of binge drinking within the last year have decreased from 55% to 35%. Meanwhile, self-reported cannabis use by student-athletes within the last year increased slightly to 26% in 2023 (from 22% in 2013 and 25% in 2017). Additionally, daily vape users increased from 0.8% in 2017 to 6.0% in 2023. (link)

Maine has received an $80M supplement in financial support from the Harold Alfond Foundation to support facilities enhancements for all 17 Black Bears athletic programs. The latest pledge brings the foundation’s total contributions to $170M. As part of the $80M investment, the university has committed an additional $18M challenge match to the athletics facilities master plan fundraising campaign. To date, $20M of that overall goal has already been committed in gifts and pledges. Funding will support a 13K-square-foot addition to the Shawn Walsh Center, construction of the Morse Arena and several other facilities projects. (link)

Idaho State is seeking approval from the state’s Board of Education to grant Idaho Central Credit Union naming rights to Holt Arena for $6M over 12 years. Bengals AD Pauline Thiros: “Our partnership with ICCU is very special. They share our goals, our values, the things that are important to us are important to them. They were willing to make an exemplary commitment and add to their already significant capital gift in order to rename it the ICCU Dome.” According to the Idaho State Journal’s Brad Bugger, ISU will use the money largely to eliminate a second guarantee game in football each year, and Football HC Cody Hawkins says he’s looking forward to scheduling more non-conference games against FCS teams. “If you look at how the SEC schedules, Alabama is going to play Mercer in the non-conference because they know they’re going to have to play Auburn, LSU and Georgia. For us, we know we’re going to have to play Montana, Montana State, Weber State, the (Idaho) Vandals — so you have got to play as many competitive games as you can. You can’t really afford to go out there and have two losses in non-conference.” (link)

RevelXP just finished its second season as exclusive provider of Playoff Premium, the official high-end hospitality program of the College Football Playoff title game. SBJ’s Ben Portnoy notes RevelXP “upped its efforts this year in Houston. The company offered ticket packages that ranged from $7,500 to $15K, which included access to the Champions Party on Sunday Night, along with suites for the title game that cost around $100-300K. RevelXP President Tracy White: “The primary difference from a sales standpoint this year is we had 12 months to sell, versus last year where we had four months. It makes a difference because we're not selling a matchup. We're selling the pageantry of college sports and the celebration that is the national championship game -- and we were able to sell a lot of our inventory before we even got to kickoff.” CEO Wes Day adds: “Definitely a learning year last year, but the execution was fantastic. We built on that both on the sales side and the experience side. And that's hard to do, if [only] because you just kind of want to rinse and repeat and you don't want to fix something that’s already great. But it's a new town. How do you tie that in? And it’s the little things that I think our team does so, so well.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown explains that the national championship coming and going without an update from EA Sports on College Football 2025 does not portend problems with the game. “What I have been told, multiple times, is that EA plans to speak to reporters and fans, in more specifics, later this Winter, and then even more as we head into the Spring and Summer. Once everybody involved can feel reasonably certain about exactly what features will be included and what they’ll look like, they’ll be more comfortable talking about them. Now, that being said, I personally think this entire situation was an unforced error for a game studio that is already struggling with a negative reputation from many gamers. EA, or at least, the communications team at EA, was not out here trying to artificially bump up expectations…but if they had no intention of even offering a perfunctory ‘see you this summer’ type tweet, they should have been more aggressive in resetting those expectations.” More from Brown on the possible mechanics of the game, which believes will not be a Madden reskin. Among the benefits offered in the package: three weeks salary for every year served, plus bonuses. Employees have until late February to take the buyout.” The league to employees: ““The league has worked to adapt to the changing business environment, aligning resources with key investment opportunities, and are continuously evaluating ways to enhance efficiency and improve outcomes. Together we have defined the League’s strategic priorities and identified areas for significant growth and investment. Those areas – such as international expansion, the growth of flag football, and the continued development of media and digital platforms – will help shape the future of the game. And the internal operations – how we operate, where we invest our capital, and the workforce – must evolve to align with these strategic priorities to best position the League for continued success.” (link)

Notre Dame Executive Assoc. AD for Culture and Engagement JP Abercrumbie joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Anthony Grassi to take a deep dive into the culture at Notre Dame, including the department’s strategic approach to navigating change and student-athlete engagement. Abercrumbie on measuring success in areas like culture and engagement: “There are pieces of it that are qualitative: How are people feeling? What are the feedback moments I get from campus partners or community partners or even fans in surveys? It’s not a single-pronged approach. There's certainly different ways to solicit that engagement. And there's the quantitative pieces, especially when you think about representation or the financial liability of some of the initiatives that we're starting there. So as much as I can, I try to quantify things. … We try to have that balance of both because I think there’s something inherent in having the numbers, but the numbers don’t tell the whole story.” Full interview now available on Connect. After several years of highly selective schools eliminating the SAT and ACT from their application requirements, a growing number of experts are wondering whether it’s been a mistake. The New York Times David Leonhardt: “Research has increasingly shown that standardized test scores contain real information, helping to predict college grades, chances of graduation and post-college success. Test scores are more reliable than high school grades, partly because of grade inflation in recent years.” Moreover, researchers suggest the standardized tests don’t have the same negative impact on diversity as previously thought, as Leonhardt explains. “Researchers who have studied the issue say that test scores can be particularly helpful in identifying lower-income students and underrepresented minorities who will thrive. These students do not score as high on average as students from affluent communities or white and Asian students. But a solid score for a student from a less privileged background is often a sign of enormous potential.” Meanwhile, a study conducted by Opportunity Insights found there was little correlation between high school GPAs and college success; however, there was a strong relationship between test scores and later success.
