Greensboro AD Kim Strable will retire at the end of the academic year. President Lawrence Czarda: "Leadership has been a significant strength throughout Kim's 24 years serving this institution. Among other notable achievements, Kim launched and sustained our Athletics Hall of Fame, served two stints as President of the conference, was a head coach of Men's Tennis for 6 years and named 'Coach of the Year' in his third season, and hired many exceptional coaches through the years. His induction into our William Smith Ariail Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010 speaks loudly of his legacy and how much he has meant to Greensboro College. Kim is the architect and builder of what Greensboro College Athletics is today." Chapel Hill Solutions will assist with the search for Strable's successor. (link)

The HCAC, NCAC, OAC and PAC will participate in the inaugural Opendorse Bowl Series on November 23, 2024, which will be a one-day, two-game series held at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, OH that will feature the highest standing team in each league that does not make the NCAA Tournament. Opendorse will sponsor the series and provide NIL services and education for the participating leagues. OAC Commissioner Sarah Otey: “I think I speak for all four conferences in expressing my excitement for this event. The four leagues have been considering bowl options for several years, but wanted to make sure we were able to deliver a special student-athlete experience and do so in a way that invests in our local communities. The opportunity to host an event like this at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium – and provide Division III student-athletes a chance to play in such an incredible venue – will be great for our conferences, the sport, and all of Division III. This would not have been possible without the support of Opendorse. While student-athletes have been able to benefit from the use of their name, image, and likeness for several years, Division III student-athletes are underrepresented in the NIL marketplace. Opendorse’s commitment to this bowl series and their support of these four conferences will help us begin to change that landscape.” The initial matchup will be HCAC v. NCAC and OAC v. PAC. An analysis from the Urban Institute examined the enrollment impact of adding sports or investing in full-time coaches one, two, three and five years afterwards at 325 DIII schools between 2004 and 2020. The analysis found that of the 201 institutions that made such an investment 91 increased enrollment while 110 did not grow enrollment. The institute’s analysis found that “by comparing the shares of schools that invested or did not invest in athletics: adding sports or full-time head coaches has little relationship with changes in enrollment.” In conclusion: “Most likely, any effects on enrollment are diminished because schools are trying multiple approaches beyond investing in their athletic programs, such as lowering tuition, increasing student aid, or adding new academic programs. Ultimately, these findings indicate that investing in athletics is not a silver bullet for small, private colleges looking to boost enrollment, though it’s clear that athletes and athletics are important to the survival of many Division III schools.” (link)

Student-athletes across the NCAA report a decrease in binge drinking and the usage of narcotic pain medication and spit tobacco, according to the association’s latest study, which had more than 23K participants across all three divisions. The use of narcotic pain medication by student-athletes has decreased in the past decade, with 6% of the respondents reporting use with a prescription within the previous year, down from a high of 18% in 2013. Overall, 15% of all men's sport student-athletes reported using spit tobacco within the last year, which is down from 22% in the 2017 study. The percentage of users has steadily decreased since 2009. Since 2009, self-reported rates of binge drinking within the last year have decreased from 55% to 35%. Meanwhile, self-reported cannabis use by student-athletes within the last year increased slightly to 26% in 2023 (from 22% in 2013 and 25% in 2017). Additionally, daily vape users increased from 0.8% in 2017 to 6.0% in 2023. (link)

St. John Fisher will hit the ice in 2025, adding Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey to its portfolio. VP for Enrollment Management Jose Perales: “We are confident that our University's academic offerings, continuing growth, and reputation and record in the NCAA Division III will enable us to successfully recruit hockey student-athletes to Fisher who will add to our success. Ozarks has received a $700K challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation that would require the university to raise $3,278,329 by October 10, 2024. The funds are earmarked for the new $10.75M Wilson Athletic Complex that began construction in October and will be the new home for Baseball, Soccer and Softball. (link)

Bethel (MN) elevates DC Mike McElroy to succeed long-time Football HC Steve Johnson in leading the Royals.
