NCAA President Charlie Baker caught up with Fox Sports/Connect’s Bryan Fischer yesterday at the NCAA Convention & says “we’re somewhere near the final quarter of the clock” to get something done with Congress, adds, “prognosticating and predicting how the clock is going to run in Washington is not something anyone usually does very successfully. What I would say is that sometime between March and June people’s attention is going to turn pretty completely to the election. But, they still have plenty of stuff on their calendar that they have to finish and I think that gives us an opportunity.” On the new deal with ESPN, which he calls one of his biggest wins during his first year on the job: “In a media market where most people are getting a 1.5x or 2x on what it was they had before, we got a 3x. ESPN played this game a lot harder than anyone else did and usually if you play the game harder than everyone else, you win. We’re all really excited about the collateral commitments they made around production and promotion and marketing. They agreed to do a bunch of stuff around storytelling and student-athletes. They agreed to significantly increase the number of selection shows, a lot of the preview work in-studio stuff, and they included a number of championships on ABC and they brought some of the DII and DIII championships into the package, as well. So, I look at the whole thing and feel really good about it and I’m also very excited that the (Women’s) Basketball Tournament is valued somewhere around 57% of the overall package, which makes it possible for the membership to start talking about a units program. A lot of this is a function of the growth and success of these sports over the last few years and that’s tribute to the NCAA, the schools, the players and ESPN.” Lots more, including the challenge of leading amid an uncertain environment. Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork sits down with D1.ticker/Connect's Kristen Eargle at the 2024 NCAA Convention to discuss the search process for the Aggies' new football coach, the changes he’d like to see to NIL, the potential for an FBS breakaway and lots more, including the role NIL plays in evaluating AD opportunities: “Whether I’m an entry level academic advisor or the athletic director, I think NIL’s gonna play a part in this conversation. What is the wherewithal of that institution, their constituents, their donors, the collective world? What's the wherewithal because most people want to be in a place where you have a chance to be successful. … It hasn't quite trickled down to that level yet, but I think ADs, deputy ADs that want to become ADs, that's going to be a question is, ‘Hey, what's the NIL infrastructure at Program X?” On the future of FBS: “I don’t think there needs to be a breakaway from the NCAA. What I do think is there needs to be some entity that can house all of this, and all of this meaning really the finances. What does that entity look like? How do we compensate the athletes in that manner that we described earlier? How do we formulate the postseason? How does the money flow into our conferences, into the institutions, into the NCAA?” Bjork believes there’s still room for the Aggies to play schools like Sam Houston State and Tarleton, “but we're going to have our subset of our financial arrangement with the athlete, they'll have their subset, maybe we'll have our postseason, they'll have their postseason but there’s still going to be competition, especially for our other sports that we don't want to see go away.” Lots more on Connect. The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reports ESPN is in “advanced talks” on an equity deal with the NFL. Here’s what you need to know: “As part of a potential agreement, Disney-owned ESPN would take control of NFL Media, which includes NFL Network, and the league would receive equity in ESPN. For the long-term viability of ESPN aligning with the most powerful sports league would enhance its position as the network plans to move to direct to consumer by 2025. [...] Since ESPN covers the league thoroughly, there would be synergies if the two sides are able to reach an agreement. Disney/ESPN might be able to secure better carriage arrangements for NFL Network.” (link)

Alabama has hired Washington Football HC Kalen DeBoer. The Crimson Tide will pay the Huskies DeBoer’s $12M buyout. USA Today’s Dan Wolken provides more context: “Two things happened in the middle of Washington’s season. 1. They had an AD change. 2. DeBoer hired Jimmy Sexton. Washington tried to get the deal done for many weeks. I think now it’s safe to surmise that Sexton knew what was about to happen.” (link, link, link)

Florida State Football HC Mike Norvell has agreed to an eight-year extension that will pay him more than $10M per year, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Seminoles AD Michael Alford: “We are thrilled that Coach Norvell has reaffirmed his commitment to Florida State University and our student-athletes. … We know how fortunate we are to have him as our head football coach, and our university is blessed to have him as one of its most visible ambassadors. As we move forward into a bright future, it is incredibly reassuring to know that Mike remained steadfast and focused on continuing his unifying, collaborative relationships with all of us at FSU." Dellenger notes Alabama “heavily pursued” Norvell, and “FSU not only agreed to a new deal but committed to a substantial increase in resources such as recruiting budgets, etc. The school is in the midst of $450M upgrade to the stadium & a FB-only operations center.” (link, link)

The Florida State-focused Rising Spear collective has released a statement following its implication in the NCAA’s finding of recruiting violations at FSU. It reads, in part: “Rising Spear separated from the individual employee (booster) referenced in the NCAA report immediately upon learning of the incident. The co-founders, employees or interns of Rising Spear have never spoken or communicated with the NCAA on this matter. None of Rising Spear’s current employees, interns or contractors worked for Rising Spear at the time of the violation. It is essential to note that these penalties expressly permit Rising Spear to continue working with student-athletes, including those who attend [FSU].” Furthermore, the collective explains that “nothing about these penalties changes those relationships or agreements.” Full statement. On3’s Pete Nakos suggests the penalty incurred by Florida State for NIL-related recruiting violations could be a portent of future enforcement and notes that, per a Yahoo report, the “NCAA’s enforcement team has screenshots of text messages from sitting head coaches sent directly to players competing on other college teams in attempts to get them to transfer schools.” Consequently, one source tells Nakos: “It’s ridiculous. You might as well just punish everyone. Nobody is innocent and you can’t allow your program to fall years behind.” But, Nakos submits, the “NCAA made its move, sending a message to collectives and schools that NIL infractions won’t go unnoticed and possibly marking the beginning of a new era for NIL.” (link)

The ire of high-profile pundits notwithstanding, Sportico’s Anthony Crupi doesn’t view this weekend’s Dolphins-Chiefs playoff game on Peacock as “one of the all-time sports television disasters,” as The Ringer’s Bill Simmons predicts. “Yes, Peacock’s reach is suboptimal; as Comcast President Mike Cavanagh revealed last month at an industry conference, the streaming service has signed on ‘30M paying subscribers,’ which is about a third of the number of households served by the NBC broadcast flagship. Peacock’s sub count is also dwarfed by legacy cable networks like ESPN (70.2M homes) and NFL Network (52.3M). Clearly, the Tua-Mahomes shootout is destined to be the year’s least-watched playoff game.” But, as indicated by the fact that the fourth quarter will air commercial-free, Crupi notes Comcast is “more invested in the long-term growth of Peacock than the immediate adrenaline spike that comes with an extra $18M to $20M in commercial cash.” NBC Sports President Rick Cordella confirms as much: “It’s not just to get people to watch on Saturday night. It’s to get people to watch and experience all this various content that we have across the Peacock service, whether it’s Universal Films or library content like The Office and Parks and Rec.” NFL EVP of Media Distribution Hans Schroeder adds that while the league will always be concerned about reach, it also plans to keep “expanding on digital and growing our presence on the screens and in the places and platforms where we know our fans are spending their time.” (link)

The Consumer Price Index grew at an annual rate of 3.4% in December, a 0.3% rise from the 3.1% annual inflation in November, and 0.2% more than the 3.2% economists expected, according to information from the U.S. Labor Department. BankRate Chief Financial Analyst Greg McBride: “Inflation, as measured by the CPI, is moving in the right direction, but this release should squash any notion investors had of a March rate cut from the Fed.” (link)
