The Terre Haute Tribune-Star’s Editorial Board offers an opinion on the AD opening at Indiana State: “The permanent role of AD undoubtedly will not be filled until a new ISU president is hired. (Deborah) Curtis is retiring effective June 30, 2024 — one year earlier than her contract had called for — under an agreement approved by the university’s board on Dec. 15, 2023. The choice of (former AD Sherard) Clinkscales long-term replacement should be made by that new president. That president and staff would be smart to choose (Interim AD Angie) Lansing for that position, if she would choose to take it. [...] Other universities have seen athletic programs help in the recruitment of students in general. ISU definitely needs that jolt. The COVID-19 pandemic certainly hurt enrollments at colleges across America, including ISU. Still, the enrollment drop at Indiana State has been breathtaking. It fell to 8,305 students last fall, a decline of 4.1% from the previous year and down 36% from fall 2017’s 13,045 total. In response to enrollment losses, ISU made about $12 million in budget cuts over the course of a year, including a reorganization.” (link)

Florida AD Scott Stricklin provides more updates on the future of The Swamp, which he calls a “restoration,” “The wing walls, the proximity of the fans to the field. Not putting a bunch of chairbacks everywhere just because that does take away from what makes it unique. We’re going to be very careful whatever we do. We don’t know exactly what that is. We’ll start in the next eight to twelve months and come up with an idea that we can take to Gator Nation and say, this is the vision. That’s going to be significant because obviously, it’s the most important facility we have.” Stricklin also says he has no intention to reduce capacity. (link)

A pair of HBCU ADs provide context on the challenges surrounding hiring a new Football HC. Bethune-Cookman boss Reggie Theus on trying to win the press conference: “That’s how you hire the wrong guy. There are guys who can win you the press conference, but they’re not going to get the job done. No matter what you’re trying to do, you’re trying to hire the best person for the job.” Alabama State AD Jason Cable: “If hiring a coach doesn’t go right, it’s all going to be on the AD’s shoulders. I think it is smart to keep the administration abreast of what you’re thinking, and if they want to chime in, of course, they could chime in. I don’t think that’s unusual or out of line at all. … But if it (the hire) goes south, you are on an island by yourself. [...] The tenure of the athletic director is going to be judged by that hire. The ability to move the program forward is largely dependent on the football coach.” (link)

Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball dropped a contest to Ole Miss yesterday & afterwards Commodores HC Jerry Stackhouse had this to say: “Best team money can buy. That’s where they are and that’s how they approached it. They got it done. It’s about adding experience. You go into the portal and add juniors and seniors, we don’t add juniors and seniors at Vanderbilt. They just don’t transfer to us.” (link)

Boston College has concluded its three-month investigation into allegations of hazing within its swimming & diving program, determining that hazing occurred last September and as such has extended the teams’ suspension through August. BC AVP/University Spokesperson Jack Dunn: “The decision is based on the University’s finding that hazing occurred this past September, as well as recurring conduct issues and a team culture that has failed to meet the expectations Boston College holds for its student-athletes. … This decision follows sanctions that were issued in December to a number of Swim and Dive team members by the Dean of Students, including University suspension for the spring semester and University probation. All team members will also be required to participate in a hazing education program determined by the University. It is the hope of BC Athletics that these measures will enable the program to move forward in the 2024-2025 academic year.” On Friday, SwimSwam reported that the Eagles had parted ways with second-year HC Joe Brinkman and the rest of their staff while also canceling the remainder of the 2023-24 season. While Dunn would not discuss personnel matters, he did confirm that the coaches are no longer with the program, per SwimSwam. (link)

+ UNC Wilmington has opened its new Shoreline Sports Complex, which includes four lighted sand volleyball courts for the Seahawks program. AD Michael Oblinger: “We were playing off campus, and something I really want to be aware of is the student athlete experience. Whether that is off campus, how we get from the locker room to and from [sporting events], that’s obviously a concern for me. So, this allows us to be on campus, which is a huge positive. Not only from day to day from a practice standpoint, but during competitions our student body and fans can come out to campus.” (link)

VirginiaSports.com profiles Virginia Athletics Fund Executive Director/Deputy AD Kevin Miller, who joined the VAF after six years at Georgia. Miller: “There weren’t many places that I would have even entertained the idea of leaving Georgia for, but Virginia is a special place. … We didn’t want to leave, but the opportunity here was too good, frankly, to turn down. This is a place that has a ton of passion, and our alumni base has a ton of wherewithal.” On his first few months in the office: “I’d say it’s been a listening and learning tour. … I’ve got 20 years of fundraising experience to draw from, but every place is different. I want to listen and learn and figure out what’s different about Virginia compared to other places I’ve been and figure out ways in which I can draw upon my experiences to implement some things here to help scale the business. … I look at it like we can be elite in everything that we do here. We’ve been really good to date, … but looking at some of our operating budgets and some of the things our programs are doing, they’re doing a lot with not as much as some of our peers. So what could they do if we fully fund these programs at a level that some of our peers are funding them at?” On NIL: “It’s an ever-changing landscape, first and foremost. Change is inevitable, growth is optional. Regardless of whether or not I like NIL, if we don’t like NIL, we’re going to like irrelevance a whole lot less. So what do we want to do about it? To me, our job is to build relationships with people who have an interest in philanthropically supporting our athletics program. And if our athletics program has a need in the form of facilities, operations, scholarships or NIL, it doesn’t matter to me. We need to address their needs, and each of our individual sport-program needs one way or the other. … It all ties together to me, so I don’t view it as a threat. I want to lean into it and help support as best as we can. We need to adapt with the times and embrace it.” (link)

BYU Assoc. AD for Creative Strategy Tyson Hutchins talks with Sponcon Sports’ Alex Kopilow about maximizing revenue through sponsored content and says of the lack of sponsored content from Michigan and Washington around the College Football Playoff national championship: “It surprises me because I know what opportunity there is, but also, I know how football-specific accounts are run. They usually fall under football personnel, they report to a Director of Operations or a Chief of Staff. They're far removed from the marketing group, Learfield, Playfly, or whoever their partner is. I am surprised that we continue to miss the opportunity seemingly.” At BYU, Hutchins explains: “We have a great relationship with our corporate sales team. There is a fulfillment role that sits between us and the sponsorship team. We have some set inventory that my staff sets and then we also try and be flexible with our partners. … We recognize how hard that is at times, but our goal is ensuring that the content doesn't have to suck. It's not just a dumping ground. When we partner with a brand, they're rubbing up against our brand and we're rubbing up against theirs. We don't want it to be something that tarnishes when it rubs up against one another.” More. (link)

Evansville Baseball student-athlete Willard Peterson has been arrested and accused of raping and sexually assaulting a female in an on-campus dorm room in November. Magistrate Judge Donald R. Vowels determined there was probable cause to issue a warrant for Peterson's arrest. The Vanderburgh County Prosecutor's Office levied charges against Peterson: two counts of rape, a Level 3 felony, and sexual battery, a Level 6 felony. UE Chief Communications Officer Noah Alatza on behalf of Purple Aces AD Ziggy Siegfried: “The University takes any allegations of sexual misconduct seriously and is cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigation. UE Athletics remain committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability, and to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all members of our community.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker caught up with Fox Sports/Connect’s Bryan Fischer yesterday at the NCAA Convention & says “we’re somewhere near the final quarter of the clock” to get something done with Congress, adds, “prognosticating and predicting how the clock is going to run in Washington is not something anyone usually does very successfully. What I would say is that sometime between March and June people’s attention is going to turn pretty completely to the election. But, they still have plenty of stuff on their calendar that they have to finish and I think that gives us an opportunity.” On the new deal with ESPN, which he calls one of his biggest wins during his first year on the job: “In a media market where most people are getting a 1.5x or 2x on what it was they had before, we got a 3x. ESPN played this game a lot harder than anyone else did and usually if you play the game harder than everyone else, you win. We’re all really excited about the collateral commitments they made around production and promotion and marketing. They agreed to do a bunch of stuff around storytelling and student-athletes. They agreed to significantly increase the number of selection shows, a lot of the preview work in-studio stuff, and they included a number of championships on ABC and they brought some of the DII and DIII championships into the package, as well. So, I look at the whole thing and feel really good about it and I’m also very excited that the (Women’s) Basketball Tournament is valued somewhere around 57% of the overall package, which makes it possible for the membership to start talking about a units program. A lot of this is a function of the growth and success of these sports over the last few years and that’s tribute to the NCAA, the schools, the players and ESPN.” Lots more, including the challenge of leading amid an uncertain environment. Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork sits down with D1.ticker/Connect's Kristen Eargle at the 2024 NCAA Convention to discuss the search process for the Aggies' new football coach, the changes he’d like to see to NIL, the potential for an FBS breakaway and lots more, including the role NIL plays in evaluating AD opportunities: “Whether I’m an entry level academic advisor or the athletic director, I think NIL’s gonna play a part in this conversation. What is the wherewithal of that institution, their constituents, their donors, the collective world? What's the wherewithal because most people want to be in a place where you have a chance to be successful. … It hasn't quite trickled down to that level yet, but I think ADs, deputy ADs that want to become ADs, that's going to be a question is, ‘Hey, what's the NIL infrastructure at Program X?” On the future of FBS: “I don’t think there needs to be a breakaway from the NCAA. What I do think is there needs to be some entity that can house all of this, and all of this meaning really the finances. What does that entity look like? How do we compensate the athletes in that manner that we described earlier? How do we formulate the postseason? How does the money flow into our conferences, into the institutions, into the NCAA?” Bjork believes there’s still room for the Aggies to play schools like Sam Houston State and Tarleton, “but we're going to have our subset of our financial arrangement with the athlete, they'll have their subset, maybe we'll have our postseason, they'll have their postseason but there’s still going to be competition, especially for our other sports that we don't want to see go away.” Lots more on Connect. The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reports ESPN is in “advanced talks” on an equity deal with the NFL. Here’s what you need to know: “As part of a potential agreement, Disney-owned ESPN would take control of NFL Media, which includes NFL Network, and the league would receive equity in ESPN. For the long-term viability of ESPN aligning with the most powerful sports league would enhance its position as the network plans to move to direct to consumer by 2025. [...] Since ESPN covers the league thoroughly, there would be synergies if the two sides are able to reach an agreement. Disney/ESPN might be able to secure better carriage arrangements for NFL Network.” (link)
