Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione fields questions from reporters, including one about the future of NIL, and responds: “With all the different narratives, with all the different lawsuits, with where we think we’re seeing the vast majority of people start to understand that we need to find a way to properly share revenue with athletes. People haven’t come to grips with that yet. I don’t know what else can happen to give them any better idea. That’s going to happen. So, what I think our best move is for our thought leaders to get together, navigate this with all the rules of our membership association, understand the legal ramifications of what’s sustainable, and find a solution so that institutions can be more involved. I actually think that’s going to start to move in that direction. I think if you watched what took place the last couple days at the NCAA Convention…people are working feverishly to try to find the right path toward that. … At the end of the day we’ve got to find a path forward, and I think the path forward is definitely going to include institutions being more directly involved.” More from Castiglione. Eastern Kentucky AD Matt Roan sits down with Teamworks VP for Business Development Kevin Barefoot at the 2024 NCAA Convention for the first in a series of solutions-oriented conversations about the biggest issues facing today’s industry leaders. Roan and Barefoot discuss NCAA President Charlie Baker’s recent letter to the membership before Roan, a member of the DI Council, reflects on budget management, coaching salaries and the implications of an antitrust exemption before proposing one change he’d make to the transfer portal. Roan believes pursuing certain antitrust exemptions is the right strategy and explains: “I hope that we can control nationally more of that message about those tangible and intangible benefits of college athletics – the values, the experiences that it teaches, and I hope that we can start to make more inroads and have more success in that space. But I think even locally as leaders – ADs, chancellors, presidents, you name it – the more that we can do to talk about really acknowledging that there are things that need to be improved and here's ways that we can improve it, that we're communicating with one another, that we're solution-oriented…going back to President Baker's letter or memo that we acknowledge that, ‘Hey there's value here.’ Is it perfect? No, and he would say that it's not perfect – it's a starting point. Let's have those conversations with our legislators, let's have those conversations with anybody that'll listen.” Roan believes collectives can continue to serve a valuable purpose “certainly when you use it not so much for recruitment but for the retention of student-athletes, as we have.” Full Q&A on AthleticDirectorU. SBJ’s Ben Portnoy examines how college sports’ finances have changed during the College Football Playoff era and observes: “The dollar figures in college football have increased exponentially — and the teams raising trophies, like the [Michigan] Wolverines last week, are those willing to spend like it.” Miami (FL) AD Dan Radakovich: “I think that anytime you look back 15 to 20 years in any part of athletics — whether it was 2000 to 1985 or 2023 back to 2003 — you’re going to see some just incredible differences in cost, and you’ll see differences in revenue. It’s just a growth industry that continues to be something that, whether it’s television revenue for a while, ticket revenue or sponsorship revenue, there’s always an impetus to help kind of bump it up to the next level.” Going back to Radakovich’s time at Clemson, Portnoy notes the Tigers’ athletic department revenue increased from $83.5M to $158.2M between fiscal years 2015 (the first year of the CFP) and 2022. That revenue included a leap from just over $19.97 million in donor contributions in 2015 to $60.8M in 2022, along with an $11M increase in media rights revenue from the ACC in that time. Overall, Clemson’s 89% increase in revenue over that span was a more than 30% edge over the average public ACC or FBS school in that same time frame.” Meanwhile, those responsible for raising money are leveraging CFP moments, both positive and negative. For example, Wolverines AD Warde Manuel following last week’s national championship remarked: “Listen, we’re open for a lot of donations. People can keep them coming. … That’s what [a national title] means.” (link)

Washington taps Arizona Football HC Jedd Fisch for the same post. UW will pay UA $5.5M for Fisch’s buyout, less than half of the $12M buyout the Huskies received from Alabama to break Football HC Kalen DeBoer’s contract. The AP’s Ralph Russo reports Fisch’s seven-year contract will pay him $7.75M annually. Huskies AD Troy Dannen: "We wanted to move quickly but thoroughly, and sought out a coach who would build on our foundation, bring energy to the program, has a track record of success, is an elite recruiter and was someone who young men wanted to play for. We found all of those characteristics and more in Jedd Fisch.” (link, link); Dannen shares a video of Fisch and the Huskies making it official. (link)

Audio has leaked of an emotional Alabama Football HC Kalen DeBoer telling his Washington players that he was leaving for Tuscaloosa. DeBoer says he “almost had a sick, empty feeling in my stomach when I heard what was happening across the country [in Tuscaloosa] because I knew in my heart that something probably would be coming this way. I hope you guys can just understand someday. I don’t expect you to understand right now, and if you do I appreciate it. I hope you understand at some point.” Full audio. (link)

Financial Times’ Sara Germano examines Nike’s strategy in a changing marketplace and notes that the rest of the shoe world has caught up with the breakthrough Vaporfly running shoes. “At the 2023 World Athletics Championships, athletes representing brands other than Nike won more individual running gold medals, 12, versus Nike’s 10. … Today, Nike’s competition goes beyond traditional rivals like Adidas as newer, more nimble shoe companies take market share.” Germano points out that athletes who helped drive sales in the early 2000s, such as Tiger Woods, are now in the twilight of their careers, and Nike CEO John Donahoe on last month’s earnings call acknowledged that “we know we must be faster, increasing the pace of innovation, increasing the pace of market to consumer and increasing our agility and responsiveness.” Meanwhile, Germano notes that “the age of social media has also allowed upstart brands to scale more effectively. Two newcomers in particular — Hoka and On Running — have benefited from stronger direct sales and strategic endorsements. They have also capitalized on the appetite from big retailers to reduce their reliance on Nike amid Donahoe’s emphasis on direct sales.” On, for example, has experienced a roughly 800% sales increase since 2019. As it moves forward, TD Cowen Managing Director John Kernan believes the Swoosh should continue to focus on its strengths: “It is still a great company, but the industry is much more challenging and there is only so much management can do. Brands cannot be all things to all people anymore.” (link)

ESPN is having its “second Year From Hell,” according to The Ringer’s Bryan Curtis, who calls 2017 the first “annus horribilis,” citing longtime former ESPN anchor Bob Ley. One major difference between the two years, Curtis observes, is how publicly this one is playing out. “The first round of ESPN crises – [New York Jets QB Aaron] Rodgers’s insult, [Jimmy] Kimmel’s response, executive Norby Williamson’s national becoming, [Pat] McAfee’s photo with executive Burke Magnus, Rodgers’s non-apology and COVID-misinformation rabbit hole (no offense to rabbit holes)—became national news during a busy week of the football calendar when three legendary coaches retired.” Also last week, Stephen A. Smith “used his non-ESPN podcast to pepper Jason Whitlock with insults” one day before news broke of ESPN using fake names to secure Sports Emmys for on-air talent. Curtis: “What’s unique about this year’s nightmares is that they emerged directly from ESPN’s bigger, existential nightmare: irrelevance. I’d argue that Smith and McAfee, probably in that order, have more creative license than any hosts in the history of the network. They have that license because they don’t need ESPN. And they have it because ESPN is trying to figure out its streaming future, and thinks they ought to be part of it, and therefore won’t or can’t tell them what to do. [ESPN Chairman Jimmy] Pitaro is a player’s coach who’s trying to be a wartime consigliere.” Also from Curtis: “The best evidence that ESPN is embarking on another Year From Hell? It’s only January 12.” (link)

The Terre Haute Tribune-Star’s Editorial Board offers an opinion on the AD opening at Indiana State: “The permanent role of AD undoubtedly will not be filled until a new ISU president is hired. (Deborah) Curtis is retiring effective June 30, 2024 — one year earlier than her contract had called for — under an agreement approved by the university’s board on Dec. 15, 2023. The choice of (former AD Sherard) Clinkscales long-term replacement should be made by that new president. That president and staff would be smart to choose (Interim AD Angie) Lansing for that position, if she would choose to take it. [...] Other universities have seen athletic programs help in the recruitment of students in general. ISU definitely needs that jolt. The COVID-19 pandemic certainly hurt enrollments at colleges across America, including ISU. Still, the enrollment drop at Indiana State has been breathtaking. It fell to 8,305 students last fall, a decline of 4.1% from the previous year and down 36% from fall 2017’s 13,045 total. In response to enrollment losses, ISU made about $12 million in budget cuts over the course of a year, including a reorganization.” (link)

Florida AD Scott Stricklin provides more updates on the future of The Swamp, which he calls a “restoration,” “The wing walls, the proximity of the fans to the field. Not putting a bunch of chairbacks everywhere just because that does take away from what makes it unique. We’re going to be very careful whatever we do. We don’t know exactly what that is. We’ll start in the next eight to twelve months and come up with an idea that we can take to Gator Nation and say, this is the vision. That’s going to be significant because obviously, it’s the most important facility we have.” Stricklin also says he has no intention to reduce capacity. (link)

A pair of HBCU ADs provide context on the challenges surrounding hiring a new Football HC. Bethune-Cookman boss Reggie Theus on trying to win the press conference: “That’s how you hire the wrong guy. There are guys who can win you the press conference, but they’re not going to get the job done. No matter what you’re trying to do, you’re trying to hire the best person for the job.” Alabama State AD Jason Cable: “If hiring a coach doesn’t go right, it’s all going to be on the AD’s shoulders. I think it is smart to keep the administration abreast of what you’re thinking, and if they want to chime in, of course, they could chime in. I don’t think that’s unusual or out of line at all. … But if it (the hire) goes south, you are on an island by yourself. [...] The tenure of the athletic director is going to be judged by that hire. The ability to move the program forward is largely dependent on the football coach.” (link)

Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball dropped a contest to Ole Miss yesterday & afterwards Commodores HC Jerry Stackhouse had this to say: “Best team money can buy. That’s where they are and that’s how they approached it. They got it done. It’s about adding experience. You go into the portal and add juniors and seniors, we don’t add juniors and seniors at Vanderbilt. They just don’t transfer to us.” (link)

Boston College has concluded its three-month investigation into allegations of hazing within its swimming & diving program, determining that hazing occurred last September and as such has extended the teams’ suspension through August. BC AVP/University Spokesperson Jack Dunn: “The decision is based on the University’s finding that hazing occurred this past September, as well as recurring conduct issues and a team culture that has failed to meet the expectations Boston College holds for its student-athletes. … This decision follows sanctions that were issued in December to a number of Swim and Dive team members by the Dean of Students, including University suspension for the spring semester and University probation. All team members will also be required to participate in a hazing education program determined by the University. It is the hope of BC Athletics that these measures will enable the program to move forward in the 2024-2025 academic year.” On Friday, SwimSwam reported that the Eagles had parted ways with second-year HC Joe Brinkman and the rest of their staff while also canceling the remainder of the 2023-24 season. While Dunn would not discuss personnel matters, he did confirm that the coaches are no longer with the program, per SwimSwam. (link)

+ UNC Wilmington has opened its new Shoreline Sports Complex, which includes four lighted sand volleyball courts for the Seahawks program. AD Michael Oblinger: “We were playing off campus, and something I really want to be aware of is the student athlete experience. Whether that is off campus, how we get from the locker room to and from [sporting events], that’s obviously a concern for me. So, this allows us to be on campus, which is a huge positive. Not only from day to day from a practice standpoint, but during competitions our student body and fans can come out to campus.” (link)

VirginiaSports.com profiles Virginia Athletics Fund Executive Director/Deputy AD Kevin Miller, who joined the VAF after six years at Georgia. Miller: “There weren’t many places that I would have even entertained the idea of leaving Georgia for, but Virginia is a special place. … We didn’t want to leave, but the opportunity here was too good, frankly, to turn down. This is a place that has a ton of passion, and our alumni base has a ton of wherewithal.” On his first few months in the office: “I’d say it’s been a listening and learning tour. … I’ve got 20 years of fundraising experience to draw from, but every place is different. I want to listen and learn and figure out what’s different about Virginia compared to other places I’ve been and figure out ways in which I can draw upon my experiences to implement some things here to help scale the business. … I look at it like we can be elite in everything that we do here. We’ve been really good to date, … but looking at some of our operating budgets and some of the things our programs are doing, they’re doing a lot with not as much as some of our peers. So what could they do if we fully fund these programs at a level that some of our peers are funding them at?” On NIL: “It’s an ever-changing landscape, first and foremost. Change is inevitable, growth is optional. Regardless of whether or not I like NIL, if we don’t like NIL, we’re going to like irrelevance a whole lot less. So what do we want to do about it? To me, our job is to build relationships with people who have an interest in philanthropically supporting our athletics program. And if our athletics program has a need in the form of facilities, operations, scholarships or NIL, it doesn’t matter to me. We need to address their needs, and each of our individual sport-program needs one way or the other. … It all ties together to me, so I don’t view it as a threat. I want to lean into it and help support as best as we can. We need to adapt with the times and embrace it.” (link)

BYU Assoc. AD for Creative Strategy Tyson Hutchins talks with Sponcon Sports’ Alex Kopilow about maximizing revenue through sponsored content and says of the lack of sponsored content from Michigan and Washington around the College Football Playoff national championship: “It surprises me because I know what opportunity there is, but also, I know how football-specific accounts are run. They usually fall under football personnel, they report to a Director of Operations or a Chief of Staff. They're far removed from the marketing group, Learfield, Playfly, or whoever their partner is. I am surprised that we continue to miss the opportunity seemingly.” At BYU, Hutchins explains: “We have a great relationship with our corporate sales team. There is a fulfillment role that sits between us and the sponsorship team. We have some set inventory that my staff sets and then we also try and be flexible with our partners. … We recognize how hard that is at times, but our goal is ensuring that the content doesn't have to suck. It's not just a dumping ground. When we partner with a brand, they're rubbing up against our brand and we're rubbing up against theirs. We don't want it to be something that tarnishes when it rubs up against one another.” More. (link)

Evansville Baseball student-athlete Willard Peterson has been arrested and accused of raping and sexually assaulting a female in an on-campus dorm room in November. Magistrate Judge Donald R. Vowels determined there was probable cause to issue a warrant for Peterson's arrest. The Vanderburgh County Prosecutor's Office levied charges against Peterson: two counts of rape, a Level 3 felony, and sexual battery, a Level 6 felony. UE Chief Communications Officer Noah Alatza on behalf of Purple Aces AD Ziggy Siegfried: “The University takes any allegations of sexual misconduct seriously and is cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigation. UE Athletics remain committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability, and to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all members of our community.” (link)
