At Saturday’s DIII business session, the membership passed changes to the DIII Philosophy Statement with two amendments retaining language around keeping DIII a primarily four-year undergraduate experience and the division will not award athletics-related financial aid. The division also passed changes to the amendment-to-amendment deadline for membership-sponsored proposals, establishing STUNT as an emerging sport for women and decreasing the minimum number of participants for a tennis match to be countable from six to four. (link); Also of note from Juniata President /DIII Presidents Council Chair Jim Troha, per Wooster FAR/D3 Bubble Watch’s Drew Pasteur: “$4 million annually will be added to the championships budget (for per diem, a larger tourney in football, and perhaps more flights for fairer brackets). NCAA President Charlie Baker caught up with Fox Sports/Connect’s Bryan Fischer at the NCAA Convention & says “we’re somewhere near the final quarter of the clock” to get something done with Congress, adds, “prognosticating and predicting how the clock is going to run in Washington is not something anyone usually does very successfully. What I would say is that sometime between March and June people’s attention is going to turn pretty completely to the election. But, they still have plenty of stuff on their calendar that they have to finish and I think that gives us an opportunity.” On the new deal with ESPN, which he calls one of his biggest wins during his first year on the job: “In a media market where most people are getting a 1.5x or 2x on what it was they had before, we got a 3x. ESPN played this game a lot harder than anyone else did and usually if you play the game harder than everyone else, you win. We’re all really excited about the collateral commitments they made around production and promotion and marketing. They agreed to do a bunch of stuff around storytelling and student-athletes. They agreed to significantly increase the number of selection shows, a lot of the preview work in-studio stuff, and they included a number of championships on ABC and they brought some of the DII and DIII championships into the package, as well. So, I look at the whole thing and feel really good about it and I’m also very excited that the (Women’s) Basketball Tournament is valued somewhere around 57% of the overall package, which makes it possible for the membership to start talking about a units program. A lot of this is a function of the growth and success of these sports over the last few years and that’s tribute to the NCAA, the schools, the players and ESPN.” Lots more, including the challenge of leading amid an uncertain environment. NCAA CMO Brian Hainline led a panel discussion on student-athlete mental health that included JED Foundation CMO Laura Erickson-Schroth; Virginia State (DII) AVP for Intercollegiate Athletics Peggy Davis; and Arizona State (DI) Tran Ethnic and Minority Psychology and Experiences Lab Director Alisia (Giac-Thao) Tran. Panelists shared their thoughts on ways to create healthy environments that normalize seeking mental health care, address inclusion and belonging, and foster student-athlete experiences of personal growth, self-acceptance and positive relationships with others, and Tran pointed out that coaches tend to have particularly close relationships with their student-athletes and calls on them to leverage that to monitor for potential signs that players may need help. “I think the message for coaches is that you can be a great starting point but you don’t have to shoulder it all. … Know that you’re not supposed to be the one-stop shop for this. You’re not supposed to take on all of this burden because mental health is something that we can all help each other with and so helping them know they can be a starting point and feel confident to do some of the things that you're doing but then be attuned to some of those things…and then using the systems that are in place” to ensure the student-athlete receives the help they need. The Centennial rolls out its three-year DEI strategic plan with three themes: Supplement Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion-Related Programming and Learning Opportunities; Create Visibility of Conference-Wide DEI Communication and Outreach; and Enhance Inclusive Policies and Practices Across Member Institutions. Executive Director Portia Hoeg: “We have made the decision to not only establish DEI as a cornerstone of our conference; we want to be leaders in this space.
