Baylor President Linda Livingstone sits down with Fox Sports/Connect's Bryan Fischer at the 2024 NCAA Convention to discuss the latest from the Board of Governors, which she chairs, President Charlie Baker's student-athlete compensation proposal, NCAA legal matters, Big 12 realignment and more. Livingstone says of the process leading up to the release of Project DI that Baker did a lot of work with his staff thinking through the options and the feedback the NCAA was receiving from within its membership and from Congress. “He and I had some high-level conversations about it. He ran preliminary thinking about it by the Board of Governors and by the Division I Board, so we provided some input and perspectives and you saw some adaptations of it happened through that and then again because it is really intended to be something that generates conversation, and discussion. It is not intended to be a final, finished product. I think that makes it easier to roll it out, too, because it doesn't have to be perfect and it can begin the conversation and that’s certainly happening.” Livingstone notes NCAA leaders heard from Congress that the association needs to fix as many of its own issues as possible, which she notes has led to progress on several fronts; however, “there’s some things we can’t do on our own around employment, around special status for student-athletes, around state preemption and some other things. So, we're willing to do these things, we can, we have done them independent of what Congress does. So, now can you help us in areas that only Congress can?” Livingstone says the NCAA is “cautiously optimistic” that Congress will address the issue but acknowledges it likely needs to be in the spring or summer before focus turns to the general election. “There’s clearly individuals from both parties in both houses that are interested. The key is it’s got to be a bipartisan bill.” More from Livingstone in the full interview on Connect. (link)

Louisiana Tech officially announces AD Eric Wood will depart for the Senior Deputy AD for External Relations and Business Development role at Ole Miss. President Jim Henderson will spearhead the national search for a new AD and has appointed AVP/Deputy AD/COO Mary Kay Hungate as Interim AD. Henderson: “In the coming weeks, we will develop a process to select the next athletics director, one worthy of the Bulldogs, the Lady Techsters, and the fan base that bleeds Tech Blue. Our best days are ahead of us." (link)

The latest round of coaching changes – namely involving Alabama, Washington and Arizona – lead Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde to observe that “what has upped the stakes – and stoked fan outrage – is the fluidity of player movement. … In reality, the athletes are simply getting some of the latitude the adults have always enjoyed. You can ask for Congressional intervention if you want. But there wasn’t anyone wanting to overhaul the system when super agent Jimmy Sexton engineered an all-time power move last week. [...] Meanwhile, agents facilitating athlete movement and playing one offer against another (low-seven-figure offers at the very richest) have been deemed an existential threat to college sports.” Notably, Forde points out the coaching turnover can’t be directly attributed to realignment, but rather the nature of how the sport has always functioned. “The apex predator eats first, and the rest of the food chain reacts accordingly. The difference is the player transfers that follow. The athletes now have actual freedom of movement options when their circumstances abruptly change. That’s not a sign of the apocalypse; it’s a sign of progress.” (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale joins the Next Up podcast with Adam Breneman and discusses topics ranging from the future of college football to collectives’ NIL budgets. Cavale believes the upper echelon football teams will break away to form their own for-profit entity “with some private equity. I think the schools will still own the majority of the teams, but I think that the private equity will come in and own the other piece of the team and help give it structure and run more like a professional team. I think that the players for those teams will be employees and will have to unionize. … They will be part of a league that's going to produce, I think, $3-4M more a year in media revenue” because the matchups will be better each week. “The highest-viewed college game every weekend is less than the lowest-viewed NFL game every weekend. The NFL has $14B in its annual media deal. Why? Single-digit spreads, parity and great, great football all the time. We had weekends this year in college football where no ranked teams were even playing each other.” Cavale estimates the top 10 collectives in college sports right now have budgets of $10M and up with the next 20 in the $5-10M range. “Then you get past that and you get to the smaller schools in the big leagues and $3M is where they’re at and it kind of needs to be the same for the top G5 schools.” Those figures are based on what the collectives are reporting and paying taxes on. Lots more in a wide-ranging interview. (link)

Dartmouth track and field student-athlete Jason Norris shares his thoughts on how NIL is impacting the Ivy League and notes that, per the New York Times, every Power 5 institution has at least one collective dedicated to it while the Ivies have none. He goes on to observe that “while on the surface it seems as though the Ivy League may fall further back in competitiveness against other conferences, it seems unlikely that NIL will truly alter the status quo. Schools like Dartmouth are not competing with schools like Texas Tech when recruiting – at least for cross country, we mainly compete against other Ivy League schools, a couple of NESCACs, and a handful of Power 5 schools. This seems unlikely to change simply because of NIL. The pool of kids who are willing to sacrifice a quasi-professional athlete experience at a Power 5 for a degree from a stronger academic institution may shrink slightly, but it will still exist. The shrinkage of this pool, however, might result in Ivies recruiting financially better-off student athletes, and the league could evolve into even more of an isolated, ‘rich-kids’ league. The Ivy League has always catered to and prided itself on elitism, and the NIL policy might just make this even more of a reality.” (link)

In addition to sales experience, McGahey explains it’s important to have the ability to “lead and to learn and really understand what makes Air Force special. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg shares some takeaways from last week’s AFCA Convention and notes: “Multiple coaches used words like ‘chaos’ and ‘mess’ to describe the current state of college football. Before Wednesday's meeting, a Group of 5 coach said it would be hard to screw up the sport more if you tried. Although coaches realize they're not seen as victims and shouldn't be – ‘We make $2M to $10M per year,’ a Big 12 coach said late Tuesday. ‘We're paid to deal with this stuff’ – they also want their voices heard and note that they predicted some of the sport's biggest challenges years ago.” AFCA Executive Director Todd Berry: “Many of the things we suggested in the transfer portal infancy, and in the NIL infancy, we've circled back many times to what the coaches suggested from the very get-go. When we had our FBS head coaches meeting, you could sense the frustration in the room about many things, because we propose things and ... other people act like it's the first time they've ever heard them." Idaho President C. Scott Green and AD Terry Gawlik were warned about Volleyball HC Chris Gonzalez’s alleged abusive behavior as early as December 2022, according to the Orange County Register’s Scott Reid, who reports Hans Doorn, father of former Idaho setter Kate Doorn, sent the university leaders a 1,300-word letter detailing how Gonzalez ”created an extremely negative culture and hostile environment.” Doorn tells Reid he received a “generic” response from Gawlik. The letter reads, in part: “Chris Gonzalez has demonstrated abusive verbal behavior and created an extremely negative culture and hostile environment. I am concerned about my daughter Kate’s mental health, and that of the entire women’s volleyball team. I am directing this note to Ms. Gawlik not only as the Athletic Director who oversees the athletic program, but as the Senior Women Administrator. These young female athletes need an advocate to help, provide advice, mentor, and to listen to their story of this volleyball season.” Gawlik is scheduled to meet with the players today, and the team is slated to hold its first winter practice on January 18. Ohio State has zeroed in on Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork to replace outgoing Buckeyes AD Gene Smith, as first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach reports that a “deal has not been finalized, but the process is trending in that direction and could be completed within a matter of days.” (link)
|
More from Thamel: “Bjork's expected hiring brings a paradigm shift for Ohio State athletics in the wake of the retirement of longtime athletic director Gene Smith, signaling a change in direction under new president Ted Carter, who began his tenure in recent weeks. For years, the parlor game at athletic director conventions had been: Which one of Smith's successful Ohio State proteges would replace him at Ohio State? There were always plenty of potential candidates who had worked under Smith, including Washington State's Pat Chun, Pitt's Heather Lyke, Utah State's Diana Sabau and UCLA's Martin Jarmond. Carter's targeting of Bjork indicates a preference for a fresh start over institutional knowledge.” (link)

Connecticut reports total expenditures of $93.1M in 2023, and the Huskies received a total of $30.2M in institutional support. That figure is $16.3M less than the $46.5M the athletic department received in 2022, which included a $13.4M payment to former Men’s Basketball HC Kevin Ollie. The overall subsidy, with student fees taken into account, was $53M in 2022 and $35.8M in 2023, per CT Insider’s Mike Anthony. Football operated at a $14M deficit in 2023. Overall, UConn generated nearly 60% of its own revenue in 2023, up from 44% in 2022. Huskies AD David Benedict: “For us, the challenge is that in a college athletic environment and higher ed, costs continue to go up, budgetarily. When tuition and fees go up, that impacts our budget. When unions negotiate to increase salaries, those are things that I don't have any control over that add expenses to our budget. So our challenge is to try to keep pace with not only those increases, but all the other increases we have to deal with, like travel costs, which are not the same for most of my peers on campus.” (link)

Marquette has received a $3M gift from former men’s basketball student-athlete/NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade that will extend the Tragil Wade-Johnson Summer Reading Program, establish the Wade Scholars and support a new men's hoops practice facility in a future expansion of the Athletic and Human Performance Research Center. President Michael R. Lovell: "Dwyane has been an inspiration across the world, and his legacy is so much bigger than basketball. We are proud of the way Dwyane represents our Marquette mission. His generous gift will make a major impact on the lives of our current students as well as future generations, and it will significantly elevate our men's basketball program." (link)

Florida Football HC Billy Napier is not on the so-called hot seat, according to Gators AD Scott Stricklin, who explains: “It’s a made-up term. People can put them on whatever list they want. It has nothing to do with reality.” Looking ahead to next season, Stricklin says Napier “made tough decisions there that were definitely the right decision. That’s going to have a big impact.” All that said, Stricklin acknowledges the angst in the fan base. “I get it. It comes back to the record. You make a field goal against Arkansas and you stop a fourth down at Missouri, the record is still not what we want, but it’s a different conversation; the temperature’s come down a little bit. [...] Our overall roster is going to be older. Older teams beat up younger teams. You look at the teams that played in the College Football Playoff; there were a lot of veterans on those teams. One of the keys in college football — really, in all college sports these days — is you need to be old and you need to figure out a way to stay old.” (link)

Stanford Women’s Basketball HC Tara VanDerveer this season will pass former Duke Men’s Basketball HC Mike Krzyzewski for the most wins by any college coach – men’s or women’s – and talks with the New York Times’ Glenn Kramon about what she’s learned along the way. First, she emphasizes the importance of making the right hires. “As my dad said, ‘You can’t win the Kentucky Derby on a donkey.’ And not just players but staff. Be sure they complement you more than compliment you. Have a vision for your players, and give them the tools. Maximize people’s strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Don’t be the center of attention. Don’t micromanage, and seek input. Outwork the players on your team. Take care of yourself — eat and sleep right, and exercise — so you can take care of one another. If you can’t swim, you can’t rescue the other swimmer, and you’ll both go down.” VanDerveer also advises learning the art of the “controlled meltdown,” noting that only once in her career does she remember losing her cool – about 35 years ago before a game against Purdue when the team wasn’t warming up with enthusiasm. “Before the game in the locker room, every player got a piece of my mind. Yes, we beat them. It was the only game Purdue lost in a 34-1 national championship season. But I didn’t feel good about it. These were college women, and I wanted to treat them as adults. It wasn’t who I wanted to be.” Full Q&A. (link)

Disney Advertising President Rita Ferro remarked during last week’s Consumer Electronics Show that despite increased focus on streaming, linear will still remain a vital platform for the company. “I don’t think linear becomes irrelevant. There is still a business for linear. We know the importance of linear as part of our overall ecosystem. … Linear is declining, not all linear’s declining equally.” Sports programming, Ferro noted, will remain important as it relates to driving ad sales on DTC and linear platforms. “Sports in particular drives simultaneous watching of content. When we have concurrent viewership, it creates more of a cultural moment. …Sports is really one of those great opportunities.” As such, the company may begin to further emphasize sports on networks like ABC while simultaneously focusing on more scripted content with a longer shelf-life on streaming. “I do see a shift in how we use that real estate space, as it were, across our broadcast platforms. … Sports is a massive part of that opportunity and no one does sports like ESPN. Being in the sports business doesn’t mean hosting a celebrity golf tournament or airing a game once a week.” (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Trefor Moss profiles Adidas CEO Bjørn Gulden, who gave out his cell phone number to all 60K of the company’s employees and says over a period of time he was contacted up to 200 times per week, often by people who urged him to reform the company. The challenge from that point on, Gulden tells Moss, was “to wake up the people who didn’t understand we were losing. … Our industry isn’t that complicated, [but] there was a culture of finding reasons not to do things.” Gulden, who led Puma during a decade when its sales tripled and Adidas’ rose by 55%, began at Adidas by ignoring reports from consultants and streamlining the reporting chain, which previously had too many “lame ducks.” Now, more department heads report directly to him. He also, Moss observes, “largely scrapped an evaluation system involving hundreds of so-called KPIs—key performance indicators by which managers are judged—which he said smothered executives with pointless box-ticking exercises.” Moss also notes Gulden has loosened the purse strings on travel costs and prefers product developers to develop personal relationships with suppliers. “Now instead of getting on a call with a supplier, you travel to Vietnam and you stay in Vietnam until you’ve finished the shoe.” More.
