Bjork’s Buckeyes Intro…
+ Ohio State officially introduces Texas A&M boss Ross Bjork as its new AD, and Bjork says of his decision to depart College Station for Columbus: “The bus for Ohio State athletics only stops maybe once, if any. And we can't control that bus schedule, we can't control when it pulls over, so the timing may not be ideal, but the stop is ideal for family and for family history. And if one move could be surrounded by all of this, this was it.” OSU President Ted Carter was asked about Bjork’s role in former Aggies Football HC Jimbo Fisher’s contract and subsequent buyout and said: “As you might imagine I pressed that question pretty hard. I had a lot of questions about that, and I'll just say right up front that Ross has owned it, as has the institution. Remember, these things don't just happen in a vacuum. Even though he was the athletic director, he wasn't the original hiring authority. Yes, he did give an extension, and that happens a lot. I experienced that myself at Nebraska. … Those that have been in the arena, those that have made those tough decisions, those who have been in it, they learn from that. Those are life lessons, and he'll bring that here. I don't expect we're going to get into any kind of decisions like that here at Ohio State. And if we have to make tough decisions whenever and however that'll be, it won't just be the athletic director making it. We have a wonderful board of trustees, and he's got an Office of the President. We're going to work collaboratively. + Bjork’s five-year contract will pay him $1.65M annually when it officially begins on July 1, according to CollegeAD. Bjork will make the move to Columbus on March 1 and work as Special Advisor to current AD Gene Smith. During that period, Bjork will earn $175K per month. In addition to his base salary, Bjork will receive $350K each year for media, promotions and public relations, bringing his take-home pay to $2M. Additionally, OSU gave Bjork $1.094M to cover his $750K buyout at Texas A&M. Bjork is also eligible for up to $250K in bonuses each year, and he will receive retention bonuses of $500K and $750K if he is still in the role on June 30, 2027, and June 30, 2029, respectively. Should OSU terminate the agreement without cause, Bjork would be owed the remainder of his base salary plus media, promotions and PR pay. If Bjork terminates the deal within two years of his start date, he would owe two years’ worth of that pay. That figure decreases to one year’s worth between the third and fourth year and 50% of one year’s worth for the remainder of the contract. (link)

The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty and Emily Giambalvo calculate how much it would cost each school to join the new subdivision proposed by NCAA President Charlie Baker by counting the total number of athletes at each school that will play football in the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 or ACC next fall (as well as Notre Dame, Oregon State and Washington State). From there, the formula for the baseline annual payment is pretty simple: total number of athletes divided by two, then multiplied by $30K to estimate the minimum each school would have to spend to join the subdivision. Athletic department sizes vary widely, with Ohio State having the highest number of student-athletes (950) and Mississippi State having the fewest (363). As a percentage of revenue, Rutgers would pay the most at 9.8%, while the aforementioned Buckeyes would pay the highest total amount at $14.3M. Next is Michigan ($12.8M), Penn State ($11.9M), North Carolina ($11.6M), Cal ($11.2M), Rutgers ($10.8M), Notre Dame ($10.7M), Virginia and Stanford ($10.6M) and Boston College ($10.2M). Colorado extends its multimedia rights partnership with LEARFIELD through 2035. SBJ’s Ben Portnoy reports the “renewal includes long-term extensions across LEARFIELD’s multimedia rights division, licensed merchandise agency CLC, digital ticket and marketing platform provider Paciolan and ticketing and seat-backs seller Amplify. The deal also includes a new agreement with Sidearm Sports as CU’s website and mobile application, which were previously supported by the Pac-12.” Buffs AD Rick George: “We are seeing more exposure And I think LEARFIELD has a lot of experience in growing brands and we think having that alignment with them on where our programs are heading [is great].” George also notes LEARFIELD will have the ability to sell naming rights on the west side of Folsom Field, the CU Events Center and the school’s indoor practice facility. Boston College has extended the suspension of its swimming and diving teams through August 2024, and the program has parted ways with HC Joe Brinkman, Diving Coach Jack Lewis and ACs Brian Keane and Alexander Santana. Eagles AD Blake James told the team earlier this month that the decision was based on an extensive investigation following allegations of hazing in September. In addition to the suspension, James indicated the student-athletes will be required to participate in a hazing education program. “My hope is that the program will learn from this experience and commit itself to ensuring appropriate behavior, meeting University expectations, and creating a positive team culture that will position the program for success in the future.” (link)

Financial Files…
+ Texas recorded $271M in revenue during FY23, an increase of nearly $32M YoY and the “largest single-year total since the NCAA began its current financial reporting system in 2005,” according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz and Kirk Bohls. The Longhorns received $86M in contributions, an $11M uptick over FY22, $63.3M in ticket sales, $5.7M more than last year, and $54.7M in sponsorships, licensing, royalties and advertising, a $10.2 YoY bump. Of the schools that have released their 2023 financials so far, Berkowitz and Bohls note that “Penn State, LSU and Tennessee all have reported exceeding $200M for the first time – but those totals trailed Texas’ by about $70M.” (link)
+ Tennessee finished FY23 with $202.1M in revenue and $191M in expenses, marking the largest year-end surplus since FY15. The Vols invested $8.4M of the surplus back into capital projects. The revenue figure was significantly higher than UT’s previous high of $154.6M in FY22. The football team generated $134.9M in revenue, a 36% YoY increase, while women’s basketball revenue experienced a 47% uptick and men’s hoops saw a 14% rise. Overall contributions to athletics increased from $32.7M in FY22 to $62.3M in FY23. Vols AD Danny White: “As we seek to build upon our championship tradition across all sports, generating new revenue is vital so we can invest back into our student-athletes, coaches and staff to give us as many competitive advantages as possible.” (link)
+ Florida State reported revenue of $170M and expenses of $172M (a $22M increase YoY) in FY23, according to Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Daniel Libit. The Seminoles finished the fiscal year with a $2.5M deficit after closing out FY22 with a $10.4M surplus, and Novy-Williams and Libit observe it’s “not entirely clear from the report what constituted the sharp increase in costs—a sizable chunk of which ($49M) was attributed to ‘other operating expenditures.’” The Seminoles did experience an increase in football ticket sales from $15.1M to $22.8M. In total, the FB program brought in $91M in revenue, $13M more than in FY22. However, FB-related expenses rose sharply from $54.6M to $75.6M. (link)

With in-person and mobile sports gambling now live across North Carolina, 10 UNC System athletic departments, including North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, UNC Asheville, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington and Western Carolina, will split 20% of the yearly tax revenue, in addition to a $300K annual guarantee. Further, the state legislature will provide $1M this fiscal year and $700K next year for each institution as revenue ramps up. (link)

Eastern Michigan held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the GameAbove Golf Performance Center at Eagle Crest Golf Course. The 13K-sq-ft, two-story facility was made possible through an $8M gift from GameAbove, a group of EMU alumni, and includes locker rooms, meeting spaces, indoor putting and chipping areas and simulators. Amazon will acquire a minority stake in Diamond Sports Group, making Prime Video Diamond’s “primary partner through which customers will be able to purchase DTC access to stream local Diamond channels,” per Amazon. “Customers will be able to access all local DTC content, including live MLB, NBA and NHL games, and pre- and post-game programming, for the teams for which Diamond retains DTC rights, through Prime Video Channels.” Details regarding pricing and availability will be announced at a later date. The Hollywood Reporter’s Georg Szalai: “Under the framework, Amazon will make a minority investment in the company, details of which weren’t immediately disclosed, and become its streaming partner, while TV station giant and Diamond parent Sinclair will make a $495M cash payment to the firm to settle litigation.” The restructuring support agreement (RSA) also includes “the promise from certain debt holders to provide $450M in financing to support Diamond’s operations as it finalizes a reorganization plan to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy and to repay $350M of existing debt.” According to Sinclair, the settlement calls for Diamond’s “withdrawal of its $1.5B litigation against Sinclair and all other defendants.
