Congratulations to Stanford Women’s Basketball HC Tara VanDerveer, who passed former Duke Men’s Basketball HC Mike Krzyzewski as the all-time winningest coach in major college basketball. VanDerveer’s record-breaking 1,203rd win came over Oregon State, and after the game she remarked: “I want to bring attention to the beauty of women’s basketball and the wonderfulness of these players that work so hard. I’m so jealous because I never got to do what they get to do and I’m able to watch a little girl’s dream play out through them.” Coach K in a statement: “This is a tremendous accomplishment for Tara VanDerveer, who is already one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of basketball. This is yet another milestone to add to an amazing legacy. More important than all the astounding numbers and career accomplishments, she’s positively impacted countless lives as a coach and a mentor. Tara remains a true guardian of our sport.” (link)

Congratulations are also in order for Alabama sophomore men’s golf student-athlete Nick Dunlap, who became the first amateur to win a PGA tournament since Phil Mickelson accomplished the feat in 1991. Dunlap’s weekend at The American Express included a 60 on Saturday, good for the lowest amateur round of all-time. (link); Check out two very cool scenes: Dunlap meeting his parents after securing the win (link) and his Crimson Tide teammates’ reaction to his putt on 18 (volume warning!). (link)

Incoming Ohio State AD Ross Bjork sits down with Allen (DII) AD Jasher Cox at the 2024 NCAA Convention for a conversation about leading during an era of rapid change for the industry. In an interview recorded before his decision to officially accept the OSU post, Bjork shares insight into how he navigates and preps for executive communication with external stakeholders as well as internal communication regarding issues such as NIL, the transfer portal and sports betting with senior leaders and head coaches. According to Bjork, the process includes compartmentalizing each step – from initial decision to execution – while maintaining alignment with his personal values and the mission of the institution. Bjork also discusses establishing a “day-to-day” department-wide culture and supporting his staff via frequent touchpoints and professional development opportunities. As the industry changes, Bjork explains the Aggies’ strategy has been to embrace all of it. “We can say we don’t like it. We can say that this isn’t what college athletics should be, but that’s not reality. … You have to embrace all of it, and at this point in time you can't really have boundaries, you can't be territorial. It all has to blend together, and so if there's any barriers, we're going to break them down. If there's any lack of communication, we're going to get everybody at the same table. If there's any frustration among a coach or the collective or LEARFIELD or whoever, let's get everybody at the table knowing that we may make a decision this day, and it may change three months from now or six months from now.” Lots more on AthleticDirectorU. The Nevada Independent’s Jacob Solis takes a comprehensive look at UNLV and Nevada’s position in the ever-evolving landscape, and Rebels AD Erick Harper contends the alignment between President Keith Whitfield and Football HC Barry Odom is strong enough to help possibly “overcome some of the financial things.” That said, Harper believes possibilities abound for the department. “We’ve got a $2B stadium, we have a $35M on-campus football complex, we are in a city that is the sports and entertainment capital of the world. There's just so much opportunity here to continue to grow the program and grow with the university that — why not build a legacy here?” Wolf Pack AD Stephanie Rempe tells Solis the spirit of NIL is “wonderful” but the practice of it has gone off the rails. “It's the Wild Wild West. And those collectives are going and recruiting players and getting people to go into the transfer [portal] and all those things that aren't supposed to be happening — that are happening — is really hard. … Nobody's able to do a whole lot when it comes to enforcing people, to disclose whatever their deals are to make sure there's not tampering.” Lots more. The report also breaks down funding sources for the university, which include transfers from campus (28%), philanthropic contributions (21%), media rights (20%), royalties and licensing (11%), ticket and gameday-related sales (8%), and NCAA and Pac-12 distributions (7%). Compensation and severance payments account for the largest chunk of the department’s expenses (41%), followed by sport-specific costs (23%), other athletic department expenses (21%) and athletic student aid (11%). + UCLA Football HC Chip Kelly is drawing interest from multiple NFL teams as an offensive coordinator, according to CBS’ Jonathan Jones, who notes: “In addition to the eight head-coaching changes that should bring new offensive coordinators, there are vacancies for the permanent offensive coordinator roles in Cleveland, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Chicago. That's not to mention the positions that become open when some of the top offensive coordinators currently with teams are plucked as head coaches elsewhere, or when more staff changes take place across the league following the divisional round of the playoffs as many sources anticipate.” The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reports there has been “lots of chatter about this for weeks. We’ll see.” (link, link)

It was not a red-letter weekend for decorum on the hardwood. On Saturday Rhode Island Men’s Basketball HC Archie Miller nearly collided with a Dayton student-athlete after venturing too far out on the court. Video here. When will this stop? (link) On Sunday, a pair of court-storming incidents ended in close calls. After Tulane’s win over Memphis, a Tulane fan can be seen rushing the court before he appears to shove Tigers student-athlete David Jones, who finished the game with 32 points and 11 rebounds, from behind. Thankfully, the incident did not escalate. (link); Also on Sunday, Ohio State fans rushed the court after upsetting the No. 2-ranked Iowa team. One of the record 18,860 fans in attendance collided with Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark before joining the celebration at midcourt. Clark, who fell awkwardly, confirmed after the game that she is okay, adding: “Great win for them and I was just trying to exit the court as quickly as possible, so I started running and I was absolutely just hammered by somebody trying to run onto the court and basically blindsided and, you know, kind of scary, could have caused a pretty serious injury to me and knocked the wind out of me.” Clark also noted Buckeyes AD Gene Smith apologized to her, “so I really appreciate that. And, you know, this is what comes with the territory. I’m sure they tried their best to do whatever they could. Obviously it didn’t work, and that’s disappointing.” (link, link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown unpacks the NIL developments that came out of the NCAA Convention to determine who benefits and calls a voluntary agent registry a “potential step in making it easier for athletes to find NIL service providers (agents, marketing support, financial advice, etc), or to create informal professional standards. I think it would be hard to argue that this step hurts or exploits athletes. But how helpful will it be?” Brown notes that as of now there is nothing stopping college students with no expertise from becoming NIL agents; however, Vermont lecturer/Student-Athlete Insights Founder Bill Carter is doubtful major, well-connected firms will bother registering. Brown: “If there are no carrots and no sticks, I don’t see how a directory is anything more than a new phone book. … But just like how the Yellow Pages alone doesn’t do much to prevent contractors from ripping you off during a home repair, I don’t see how this directory would do much to address problems with ‘bad actor’ service providers.” Brown also weighs the pros and cons of NIL disclosure and concludes price transparency would help student-athletes and brands, “especially smaller and regional companies, feel more confident in engaging in NIL activity. If you have no idea how much is a ‘reasonable’ amount to pay for a particular service, and if you have regulatory concerns, it’s much easier to pay that marketing budget in old standbys like TV, Radio, Print, Google and Facebook. More brands entering the marketplace could then drive up the value of deals, or at least, increase earning potential for more athletes.” Lots more. (link)

D1Baseball’s Mark Etheridge takes a look at how Baseball coaches are working to keep players from entering the transfer portal, noting it’s particularly problematic in baseball, which “is a repetition game. Sometimes, year two or year three presents an entirely different experience than the one found initially.” Alabama HC Rob Vaughn notes: “I do think we’re just in a microwave society in general, or we want everything instantaneous. And we got to be able to zoom out a little bit and understand like, ‘Hey, here’s the process to me being good. This is a long-term goal, not what do I want today?’ And that’s really hard because nothing in these young people’s world is that way right now.” Florida HC Kevin O’Sullivan explains his philosophy: “I think what you try to do is just focus on the development piece, and you give them examples though other guys that may not have played a whole lot their freshman year end up being really good players. So, you go back and the last four or five years with some of these players they can relate to and know their names. Just give him some real stories.” Auburn HC Butch Thompson adds: “Communicate, be honest with folks, and tell them where they stand. Draw a line in the sand. We’ve communicated to everybody where they’re at and what needs to happen.” More from SEC skippers. (link)

Washington AD Troy Dannen: “The gap between the Tulanes and the USCs is getting wider and wider and wider. There’s a new gap now, and that’s the gap between the Arizonas and the Washingtons. Moving into the Big Ten, that gap goes like this [extending his arms]. Why does a coach of a top-10 team come here? My recruiting pitch: ‘You want to be in the Big Ten or the SEC, because that’s where the future will be determined.’” (link)

More on UCLA’s $36.6M FY23 deficit from the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch: “While the Bruins received just $2,060,000 in student fees and direct institutional support as part of their latest fiscal budget, the university did absolve the athletic department of roughly $10 million in service debt on athletic facilities. [...] Football ticket sales generated $11.6 million in revenue, up from $10.6 million the previous year, thanks in part to an eight-game home schedule for the 2022 season. [...] UCLA’s $18.3 million in revenue from sponsorships, licensing agreements, advertisements and royalties was an increase of $3.5 million from the previous year thanks in part to it being the first year the school earned sales commissions from its Nike deal. The return of sports camps amid the receding pandemic brought in $2.79 million, up from $992,000 the previous year. Men’s basketball ticket sales produced $7.3 million with the team ranked in the top 10 nationally for most of the season.” (link)

Florida A&M AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes supports Women’s Bowling HC Capri Howard on the dismissal of a student-athlete who claimed she had to choose between her studies & team activities. Skyes, via a statement, “In December of 2023, Coach Howard dismissed a student from the bowling team for reasons supported by the NCAA bylaws. Though it’s always challenging to see our student-athletes dismissed, I support the decision by Coach Howard as the proper procedures were taken before dismissal.” (link)

Executives throughout the sports industry tell SBJ what they would do if they were in charge of their chosen domains, and Detroit Lions SVP/General Counsel Maggy Carlyle explains: “With college football on the cusp of moving to an employment model, and conference realignment further consolidating media broadcast rights, there is no better time for the NFL to take an ownership stake in its primary development league. Acquiring the CFP, the NFL will be best positioned to launch a College Football League, inviting the current top-tier FBS schools who have the resources and make the investment to compete nationally. The NFL can use the CFP and CFL to directly develop coaches, refs and players; test out new rules; improve scheduling for the NFL and CFL; extend its international reach; and grow the game of football.” Altius Sports Partners Founding Partner/CEO Casey Schwab’s “focus would be on the most effective path to keep momentum going,” particularly in growing sports like women’s basketball and volleyball. “The best way to do that is to stop fighting legal battles that are already lost, and instead, create a framework that balances fair athlete compensation and enforceable penalties for those who color outside the lines. I would use that framework to settle the House case as quickly as possible with timing running out before the 2024 election, and finally, with the framework and settlement in hand, bring Congress a practical path toward narrow antitrust protection.” (link)

Northern Colorado has launched a $1.5M campaign for a turf playing surface at Jackson Field. There has been a $150K donation already and the “multi-year effort” according to Bears HC Mike Anderson will tap into donations from former Bears players and others. If the $1.5M is not reached by the end of 2026, the “money will be used for the greatest need in the program as determined by the head coach,” according to the release. (link)

Several parents of current and former Idaho volleyball players believe Vandals AD Terry Gawlik should be removed from her position for “failure to effectively address the alleged continued bullying of players by head coach Chris Gonzalez.” Dave Green, the father of former Vandals libero Emmy Green and the cousin of university president C. Scott Green, said of Gawlik: “Terry is a big proponent of Title IX and she’s on all these (NCAA) committees but you need to be fired. You said you were going to protect these women. She didn’t do (expletive). That pisses me off. That pisses me off. I really thought Terry was going to do the right thing and she didn’t. Vandals are loyal and to (us) Terry is (expletive). Terry needs to be gone.” Former student-athlete Marissa Drange: “I absolutely think she should be fired. She ignored the concerns that have been brought to her over the past two seasons and continues to show little regard for the welfare of the athletes she is supposed to protect.” The student body government on Friday released a statement in support of the women’s volleyball players. Former College of Charleston Baseball HC Matthew Heath was charged on January 13 in Oconee County with unlawful neglect of a child. He is accused of pushing a child down the stairs, depriving the child of food on multiple occasions, forcing them to take cold showers during cold weather, picking them up and throwing them to the floor, and not allowing them to use a pillow or blankets in bed. According to a report from the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, the incidents occurred between Nov. 28 and Jan. 1 and the complaint was made by the Department of Social Services. (link)
