Extra Points’ Matt Brown parses some of the claims made during last week’s congressional NIL hearing, including NCAA President Charlie Baker’s assertion that if all student-athletes are made employees, then an “an enormous number of student-athlete opportunities” will be lost. Brown agrees with the arithmetic but is doubtful that every student-athlete must be designated as an employee. “If a school does not have the money or political will to pay an athlete like an employee, they could simply elect to not treat an athlete like an employee. Rather than wholesale cut programs en masse, Baker, conference commissioners, or school-leaders could also push for a conversation about how to reform the obligations and terms of Olympic sport management to simply comply with the FLSA. That conversation has largely not happened in public.” On the other side of the equation, Brown asks why the NCAA isn’t seeking an antitrust exemption to contain coaching salaries and buyouts as a means to help save the imperiled Olympic sports. “If cost control was actually a major concern from college athletics leaders, you’d think that would also be part of their ask to lawmakers, no? That’d probably help pay for a few more sports programs.” More from Brown. (link)

Mississippi University for Women will head back to the drawing board for a new name as President Nora Miller met with alumni and those involved in the renaming process late last week “to apologize to them that in seeking a more inclusive name for our students, our process for the last few months has not been as inclusive with our alumni, and acknowledging that their support is very important for us to be able to get this change through the legislature and to make it work and to ask for them to join with us moving forward.” The naming committee will present three final names to constituents via survey later this week, with a recommendation based on those results by February 1 so State Senator Chuck Younger can sponsor a name change bill in the legislature by the February 15 deadline. Miller: “We had likened this to expectant parents who are often advised not to share the names that they’re considering because everybody will tell them why they don’t like it. That’s kind of how we went through this, but now we realize this isn’t only our baby. It belongs to a lot of people.” (link)

Extra Points purveyor Matt Brown dives into the pair of new DIII bowl games through the Opendorse Bowl Series, with NCAC Commissioner Keri Alexander Luchowski and OAC Commissioner Sarah Otey noting the idea of more postseason opportunities had been explored for years, but this one makes financial sense with Otey stating: “My presidents were not going to support a postseason effort that became a resource drain on our member institutions….and we are confident that even with travel expenses, this event will be in the Black.” In addition to Opendorse serving as the title sponsor, both identified the opportunity for additional naming sponsors. DIII Midwest Bowl Series CEO Mike Shaw tells Brown he was able to raise around $100K between the 2023 Culver's Isthmus Bowl and Cousins Subs Lakefront Bowl, which was enough to cover travel, facility rental, officials, etc. (link)

+ Virginia Wesleyan is working on a new golf training center supported by trustee/Vista Outdoor CEO Eric Nyman and will include two state-of-the-art simulators, team room and more. Director of Men’s and Women’s Golf Tom Hall: “Our men and women will now have an on-campus practice facility that allows them to use their time more effectively, coming in between classes or in their spare time to get some work in. The data that we’ll be able to collect on each player's performance will allow us to maximize their abilities. The scope of this system will change the way team members practice, when they practice, and how they practice. It is a program-changing addition.” (link)

+ Saturday’s Roanoke-Washington & Lee Wrestling match took place on stage at the Mill Mountain Theatre, in front of a near-sellout. Generals HC Nathan Shearer: “I think the Olympic sports, especially big picture and long term, are finding more creative avenues and ways to showcase there’s a lot of character in this sport. Bates will pay an unspecified amount to the children of former Football HC Malik Hall for adverse health effects suffered by living in a home provided by the college during Hall’s time leading the Bobcats. The settlement was part of a civil lawsuit filed in 2022 in which Hall sued on nine counts of discrimination, retaliation and negligence and its closure indicates the legal action has come to a close. Social n Sport’s Jessica Smith offers a list of items to consider focusing on this year in sports and social media “based on observations, lessons learned and insights from others.” First, Smith calls for an end to “martyr syndrome” in which people who work in sports complain about missing life moments. “The reality is that too few organizations keep a perspective on what we do. We encourage people to make sacrifices, chalk it up to being part of the business, and then create a vicious cycle of martyr syndrome because people who grew up in sports have zero ideas of what some semblance of balance looks like. And in the end, we create burned-out, jaded people in what should be an incredibly fun industry to be part of. … Working in sports is fun. And it should be. But if we don’t find a way to let people RSVP ‘yes’ to those important life moments and not feel guilty about it, our industry will not keep the best and the brightest.” Smith also believes that “if you are investing in video content, you should invest in YouTube. While the platform is slower to build than other social platforms, I would argue that YouTube has one of the strongest and most stable audiences out of any social network,” with 2.7B active monthly users and roughly 122M active users per day. And “thanks to YouTube Shorts, this platform is no longer just for long-form video; it’s a platform that will support an entire video ecosystem.
