Washington AD Troy Dannen: “The gap between the Tulanes and the USCs is getting wider and wider and wider. There’s a new gap now, and that’s the gap between the Arizonas and the Washingtons. Moving into the Big Ten, that gap goes like this [extending his arms]. Why does a coach of a top-10 team come here? My recruiting pitch: ‘You want to be in the Big Ten or the SEC, because that’s where the future will be determined.’” (link)

More on UCLA’s $36.6M FY23 deficit from the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch: “While the Bruins received just $2,060,000 in student fees and direct institutional support as part of their latest fiscal budget, the university did absolve the athletic department of roughly $10 million in service debt on athletic facilities. [...] Football ticket sales generated $11.6 million in revenue, up from $10.6 million the previous year, thanks in part to an eight-game home schedule for the 2022 season. [...] UCLA’s $18.3 million in revenue from sponsorships, licensing agreements, advertisements and royalties was an increase of $3.5 million from the previous year thanks in part to it being the first year the school earned sales commissions from its Nike deal. The return of sports camps amid the receding pandemic brought in $2.79 million, up from $992,000 the previous year. Men’s basketball ticket sales produced $7.3 million with the team ranked in the top 10 nationally for most of the season.” (link)

Florida A&M AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes supports Women’s Bowling HC Capri Howard on the dismissal of a student-athlete who claimed she had to choose between her studies & team activities. Skyes, via a statement, “In December of 2023, Coach Howard dismissed a student from the bowling team for reasons supported by the NCAA bylaws. Though it’s always challenging to see our student-athletes dismissed, I support the decision by Coach Howard as the proper procedures were taken before dismissal.” (link)

Executives throughout the sports industry tell SBJ what they would do if they were in charge of their chosen domains, and Detroit Lions SVP/General Counsel Maggy Carlyle explains: “With college football on the cusp of moving to an employment model, and conference realignment further consolidating media broadcast rights, there is no better time for the NFL to take an ownership stake in its primary development league. Acquiring the CFP, the NFL will be best positioned to launch a College Football League, inviting the current top-tier FBS schools who have the resources and make the investment to compete nationally. The NFL can use the CFP and CFL to directly develop coaches, refs and players; test out new rules; improve scheduling for the NFL and CFL; extend its international reach; and grow the game of football.” Altius Sports Partners Founding Partner/CEO Casey Schwab’s “focus would be on the most effective path to keep momentum going,” particularly in growing sports like women’s basketball and volleyball. “The best way to do that is to stop fighting legal battles that are already lost, and instead, create a framework that balances fair athlete compensation and enforceable penalties for those who color outside the lines. I would use that framework to settle the House case as quickly as possible with timing running out before the 2024 election, and finally, with the framework and settlement in hand, bring Congress a practical path toward narrow antitrust protection.” (link)

Northern Colorado has launched a $1.5M campaign for a turf playing surface at Jackson Field. There has been a $150K donation already and the “multi-year effort” according to Bears HC Mike Anderson will tap into donations from former Bears players and others. If the $1.5M is not reached by the end of 2026, the “money will be used for the greatest need in the program as determined by the head coach,” according to the release. (link)

Several parents of current and former Idaho volleyball players believe Vandals AD Terry Gawlik should be removed from her position for “failure to effectively address the alleged continued bullying of players by head coach Chris Gonzalez.” Dave Green, the father of former Vandals libero Emmy Green and the cousin of university president C. Scott Green, said of Gawlik: “Terry is a big proponent of Title IX and she’s on all these (NCAA) committees but you need to be fired. You said you were going to protect these women. She didn’t do (expletive). That pisses me off. That pisses me off. I really thought Terry was going to do the right thing and she didn’t. Vandals are loyal and to (us) Terry is (expletive). Terry needs to be gone.” Former student-athlete Marissa Drange: “I absolutely think she should be fired. She ignored the concerns that have been brought to her over the past two seasons and continues to show little regard for the welfare of the athletes she is supposed to protect.” The student body government on Friday released a statement in support of the women’s volleyball players. Florida Football is under NCAA investigation stemming from the NIL activity surrounding former commit & current Arizona State quarterback Jaden Rashada. As you may recall, reports at the time indicated Rashada had agreed to a four-year NIL deal totaling more than $13M to join the Gators. A statement from UF: “We have been and will continue to cooperate with the NCAA. We hold ourselves to high standards of excellence and integrity on and off the field. Because we follow NCAA policies about maintaining confidentiality, we are unable to offer additional comments.” (link, link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham talked to the Carolina Insider podcast on how the Tar Heels are thinking about handling NIL once the NCAA allows for more department involvement: “What we're going to do is bring our arms around all three (collectives), they're all multi-sport collectives, so now we can help promote them. The rules have changed a little bit over time, I expect more changes by August of '24. So we want to be prepared and have our arms around all three collectives, if not more, and just have one unified collective for the department. Not that we only have one collective, because you're still — if you're interested in football, you can give the football or basketball or field hockey or lacrosse, whatever it is, you'll be able to give to that NIL collective. But we want to have one brand. Carolina athletics is important. And if you have a specific interest, then you can guide your money, just like the Rams Club does. But we need to set that up for NIL and that's what we're going to do in the next couple of weeks.” (link)

The University of North Carolina System Board of Governors is entertaining giving its president & board the power to block any conference realignment moves. From The Raleigh News & Observer: “The proposed policy change, which is on the agenda for the board’s University Governance committee meeting Wednesday, would require chancellors across the 16-university system to give the UNC System President, currently Peter Hans, ‘advance notice prior to executing any agreement which would result in the constituent institution’s transfer, removal, or joining of an athletic conference association.’ Such notice would need to include a ‘financial plan’ associated with the proposed conference move, which the president could either approve or disapprove, the policy states. If the president approves the financial plan, he would then submit the notice and plan to the Board of Governors.” (link)

Texas A&M produced $279.2M in operating revenue in FY23, though of note $53.2M of the $115.4M in contributions for the year can be attributed to an “unusual level of spending during the year on a series of facilities projects.” For the first time since 2014 the Aggies received direct institutional support to the tune of $12M, though Senior Assoc. AD/CFO Jeff Toole says this was a loan by the school from non-taxpayer funds to assist with another facility project and will be repaid by the athletic department. TAMU spent $4M+ on football recruiting during the year, which, with what else has been reported around the country to-date, puts the Aggies alongside Georgia ($4.5M) and Clemson ($3.2M) as the only schools to top $3M in football recruiting in a single year. It marks a $1M jump YOY in the category and is substantially more than the school’s previous high, $17M in 2018. Overall operating surplus on the year (including the elevated facilities-related contributions): $85.5M. (link)

Nevada will name its new baseball locker room the Tom Dolan Locker Room in recognition of longtime benefactor Tom Dolan, with the upgrades coming this summer. AD Stephanie Rempe stopped by NSN Tonight and had this to say about the Mountain West/Pac-12 football scheduling alliance: “I can’t imagine what Washington State and Oregon State are going through, so we want to put our arms around them and be excited that they’re coming to the conference.” Rempe mentions the indoor track is still on schedule for next season and the football indoor facility remains top of mind. Roughly $400K is still needed for a new field for baseball. (link)

Collegiate Sports Associates Founder/Chairman Todd Turner, Stavvy COO/former America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen, former MLB EVP/CFO Jonathan Mariner, PICTOR Group President Sandy Hatfield Clubb and Knight Commission CEO Amy Privette Perko participated in a conversation about the Knight Commission’s C.A.R.E. Model during the NCAA Convention. Perko noted that the commission supports NCAA President Charlie Baker’s Project DI proposal because “the key point of his proposal that the schools with more than $100M dollars in athletics budget should be directing more money toward college athletes’ education and success. … We've been very consistent and have messaged this early because we know the CFP, the schools in that category, the $100M or more, those are the schools that are not in compliance currently with the C.A.R.E. model, and those are the schools that are receiving many more distributions from the College Football Playoff. So, again, it's really urgent that there be some kind of new regulations to require more spending to the athlete-centric areas. If not, you're going to have continued exorbitant coaching salaries, continuing exorbitant severance buyouts that get a lot of negative attention for college sports.” Perko also points out that the C.A.R.E. model takes into account how many sports schools sponsor and offers a spending credit for those who sponsor more, while Project DI in its current form effectively disincentivizes the sponsorship of more sports in the newly formed subdivision by virtue of its requirement that half of all athletes receive the $30K trust fund. Lots more from the full session, including how the establishment of a luxury tax is designed to comply with antitrust regulations. (link); Full slide deck from the C.A.R.E. Model presentation. (link)

Washington AD Troy Dannen provides more details on the Huskies’ push to extend & increase compensation for former Football HC Kalen DeBoer, who is now leading the program at Alabama: “We had an $8.7 million annual contract in front of Kalen at Thanksgiving. After the Sugar Bowl we had a $9.4 [million annual offer] on the table, which would have put him in the top eight in the country. When that didn’t get signed, I started talking to [former Huskies HC Chris Petersen], just in case. ‘Hey, who do you like? Who have you run across?’” Per the Seattle Times: “Via a public records request, The Times received documents that confirmed those figures. The first of two contract offers arrived on Nov. 26 and extended through the next seven seasons — with DeBoer receiving $8.5 million guaranteed in 2024, $8.55 million in 2025, $8.6 million in 2026, $8.65 million in 2027, $8.85 million in 2028, $8.9 million in 2029 and $9 million in 2030. A second contract offer, dated Jan. 11 — the day before DeBoer left for Alabama — included more inflated salary figures, starting at $9 million in 2024 and escalating by $100,000 each year, before topping at $9.6 million in 2030.” (link)
