Arizona Interim CFO John Arnold yesterday told the Arizona Board of Regents that UA’s cost trajectory is “alarming” but fixable and noted the Wildcats athletics department was “only” responsible for about $35M of a $140M gap last fiscal year that led to the university’s financial issues. Arnold, who also serves as ABOR’s executive director: “We’re going to be very, very careful about this and really go through a careful process to really define the scope and nature of the problem that we’re facing. We’re in that process right now. And I think in the next few days, we’ll be in a position to really talk about the issues we’re facing and immediate steps. … We’re of course looking hard at athletics and what we can do to modernize that department but ultimately the national model around college athletics has changed over the last five years. As we modernize the University of Arizona’s athletics department, I think there’s going to have to be a broad community discussion.” Arnold added that the board needed to be “realistic” about revenue generation and “the cost of having a full-blown athletic department.” (link)

The Vanderbilt Hustler’s Andrew Wilf profiles Commodores AD Candice Lee, who tells Wilf she “probably didn’t start to truly think about becoming an athletic director until right after [Virginia AD] Carla [Williams] got her job, probably in 2017. She became the first Black woman to be a Power 5 athletic director.” Williams also talks about the launch of the $300M Vandy United campaign, noting that “This was during COVID-19. So at a time when a lot of places were sort of scaling back, it was very clear that the chancellor felt that it was important for us as an institution to lean into the areas that we thought were important, and athletics was one of them. $300M is a lot of money, but also that the first $100M came from the university and that sent quite the signal that this university is invested in athletics.” On playing the 2023 football season around the construction at FirstBank Stadium, Lee says: “It’s a privilege to be inconvenienced in the name of progress. There’s some real progress that’s happening before our eyes. We’re not just talking about it. We’re doing it with great support. I’m grateful for that.” (link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock reflects on his 10 years in Blacksburg and tells The Roanoke Times’ Mark Berman this is still his dream job. “This is where I want to be. … Unless something really drastic changes, I’ll retire or get fired here. One of those I would prefer over the other, but that’s just the jobs that we have and you accept it. But I feel good right now.” Babcock has hired several HCs during his tenure and calls the process an “inexact science,” adding: “I’m certainly not undefeated on picking coaches and that always grinds at you. You just want to have the vast majority [work out].” Babcock acknowledges there are times when not having the same war chest as schools in the SEC is frustrating. “I wish we had more resources. That’s why we’re constantly talking about leaning on our fan base. And I know [ACC commissioner Jim Phillips] is doing a lot in the league. I take no pride in being in the middle of the pack or the lower half of the budgets in the Power Five. I don’t like that at all.” More from Babcock. (link)

Auburn at the start of the hoops season became the final SEC school to begin selling alcohol at athletic events, and Tigers AD John Cohen tells AL.com’s Matt Cohen: “I don’t think there was a specific reason why Auburn was last to come to this. But it takes a lot of thought. When you start this process, a great deal of research and thought has to go into it. I think Auburn has been in that process for a while.” Upon his arrival, Cohen expressed concern about a lack of premium options, including alcohol sales, which he believed would combat the ease of watching at home as fans would no longer have to pass up the ability to drink a beer at home if they could do so at the arena. “We’re asking them to make time that they sometimes don’t have and come experience Auburn University. In doing that, we have to make the environment as conducive and as enjoyable an opportunity as possible.” There will also be alcohol sales at spring sporting events, and Cohen expects the Tigers to sell alcohol at football games this fall. Ole Miss Women’s Basketball HC Yolett McPhee-McCuin opened her press conference following last night’s win over Florida by sharing her thoughts on support for her program and women’s sports overall: “What I’m trying to do is get the Oxford community to catch up because the rest of the world has caught up to the fact that women’s sports is legit and it’s real. I’m not going to allow people to make it seem like I haven’t earned what I’ve gotten. I’m not going to make it seem like our women are less than. … We should have had Club Red up in here. It should’ve been packed in here. How does a team that goes to the Sweet 16 that only has two [SEC] losses not have an average of 5,000 people in the stands? How? You know what it is? It’s a lack of value and it needs to change. I don’t care who’s upset about me saying this because I’m going to speak the truth. Women’s sports is a legitimate entity and maybe because Oxford right now doesn’t think so, the rest of the world has caught on. So the Oxford community needs to catch on. The Ole Miss campus community needs to catch on.” (link); Full video. (link)

The MAC unveils league football opponents for the 2024-26 football seasons. The new scheduling model eliminates the league’s East and West Divisions. Instead, the top two teams based on conference winning percentage will compete in the MAC Football Championship Game at Ford Field in Detroit. Additionally, the new model will allow for each team to face all 11 conference opponents home and away at least once during a three-year cycle. Additionally, the new format will incorporate protected opponents based on geographic location and rivalries. (link).

The Centennial Authority, which oversees PNC Arena, which is home to the NC State men’s basketball team in Raleigh, has voted to terminate its contract with Ratio and HOK, the two firms that had been generating options to update the arena since 2014, and issue a public request for new architects, The News & Observer’s Luke DeCock reports. Centennial Authority Chairman Philip Isley: “This is not a bad thing. It’s just something that we have to do and need to do to make sure we have fresh eyes on everything, and this helps us to. We want to get it right, one time, moving forward. We’re going to have a building that’s going to last a lot longer and it’s going to jump-start everything else around here.” Isley also says the authority has been assured by project manager CAA ICON that changing architects would not delay planned renovations, which are scheduled to take place in a three-year window over the summers of 2025, 2026 and 2027. Georgia next month will begin work to revitalize the hedges inside Sanford Stadium. The most recent hedges, which have a typical lifespan of 20-40 years, were installed during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and were propagated four years before that, giving them a total life of 31 years. Slated to be completed by the 2024 G-Day Game, the project will include a full soil replacement, irrigation, and drainage work, and UGA will also replant the hedges for continued growth into the future. Arizona-to-Texas State QB Jayden de Laura has withdrawn from the school and will not join the football program. The announcement comes eight days after de Laura settled a civil lawsuit in connection with a 2018 charge that he committed sexual assault following a 2018 high school football game in Hawaii. De Laura began his career at Washington State before transferring to Arizona and then to Texas State. Bobcats HC G.J. Kinne noted de Laura did not plead guilty to nor was convicted of criminal charges and that the school vetted the quarterback through other coaches and people who knew him, including former AC Craig Stutzmann, who is from the same town as de Laura and coached him at Wazzu. Stutzmann recently accepted the OC job at San Jose State. (link)

The U.S. economy grew at an unexpectedly brisk 3.3% annual pace during 2023 Q4, far surpassing the 2% gain expected by Wall Street. For all of 2023, the U.S. economy accelerated at a 2.5% annualized pace, well ahead of the Wall Street outlook at the beginning of the year and better than the 1.9% increase in 2022. There also was progress on inflation, as core prices for personal consumption expenditures rose 2% for the period, while the headline rate was 1.7%. (link)

Former Arizona AD Dave Heeke will be paid his base salary through the end of his employment contract on March 31, 2025, in addition to any earned incentive payments, according to AVP for University Communications Pam Scott, who notes Heeke’s salary totals $1,042,500 and additional incentive compensation for FY24 will be calculated. Scott adds: “Much of the information and speculation regarding the reasons for the transition of Dave Heeke have been inaccurate or flat-out wrong. Dave was a valuable member of our University community and we wish him well." (link)

Arizona President Robert Robbins and former Wildcats AD Dave Heeke spent the last seven years in lockstep, according to The Arizona Daily Star’s Greg Hansen, who observes: “Heeke, with Robbins' support, spent about $100M” to rebuild or upgrade multiple athletics facilities. Then “out of the blue, [Robbins] fired Heeke, a gut punch that not only floored him, but left him wondering why. … Heeke is the casualty of a bigger battle, one between Robbins and his many (and very vocal) campus detractors, those crying for blood related to the UA’s $240M budget shortfall. The easiest thing to do was to find a fall guy. … Firing the man responsible for the athletic department’s deficit, said to be between $55M and $85M, is surely a move to buy Robbins time, even though the central administration approved all of the athletic department building projects and green-lighted the costly decision (maybe $45M) to keep the athletic department in full operation during the COVID season. … What’s next? As crazy as it seems, Robbins, whose contract expires June 30, 2025, is likely to be a committee of one to hire Heeke’s replacement. Given the administrative chaos at the UA, convincing an elite athletic director to work for Robbins, arm in arm, will be a difficult sell.” (link)

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), who chairs of the Senate Judiciary Committee, met today with NCAA President Charlie Baker "to discuss proposals to modernize Division I athletics in the age of name, image, and likeness rights for college athletes,” USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports. Durbin: “College sports is a big business that generates even bigger profits, yet little of this money makes its way to the athletes who made these record-breaking profits possible. Further, despite being used in a plethora of promotional campaigns by universities, college athletes are prohibited from being compensated for the use of their name, image, and likeness. As I discussed with NCAA President Charlie Baker today, we must strike a delicate balance between ensuring players are fairly compensated and regulating collectives to prevent them from taking advantage of college athletes.” Berkowitz notes the Judiciary Committee’s interest is “connected to the NCAA's interest in a form of antitrust protection. Senate Commerce Committee members and staffs have had long standing interest in college sports.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger expands on his reporting from yesterday concerning the Power 5’s criticisms of Project DI and explains: “So, if they don’t want this model, what do they want? It’s becoming more and more clear that they believe at the highest level of the sport that they need to not just put a toe in the pool, which some believe this proposal does, but both feet, which is a revenue sharing type of collective bargaining situation. And you might ask why do they want to leap in like that? Well, the first reason is to settle the House case, the antitrust case against the NCAA that could cost it billions in retroactive NIL.” Dellenger notes that House attorney Jeffrey Kessler pointed out there are two routes the NCAA can take. “The NCAA can lose in court and be forced to pay a lot of money and change its model or it can decide to change its model itself, settle the case, and still pay a lot of money but maybe not as much. So that's kind of what's happening right now and those at the highest level don't believe Charlie Baker’s proposal goes far enough to settle the court case and to be a long-term solution.” Dellenger goes on to say the House case is “thought to be kind of a last straw leading to the split of the Power 5 and the Power 2” because “in order to settle, only the real high-end, rich programs can afford to settle. I’ve heard numbers from $10M to $15M, to maybe even $18M per school chipping in to settle the case.” In addition to being the only schools who can afford to settle, Dellenger notes those are the only schools who can afford to fund a model that is “fair enough, as Jeffrey Kessler put it.” (link)

Washington State and Oregon State “took the worst poker hand in the history of college sports and did not fold,” according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who observes that by not committing to anyone beyond the next two seasons has allowed them the freedom to monitor the landscape and prepare for multiple outcomes for the next two-and-a-half years, which in the current environment, “feels like a decade. By 2026, the ACC or Big 12 might have determined its current structure is suboptimal. By 2026, athletes might be deemed employees by the National Labor Relations Board. By 2026, the power conferences might have lost a multi-billion-dollar antitrust lawsuit. By 2026, the NCAA might have approved president Charlie Baker’s proposal to create a new football subdivision that requires an eight-figure commitment and divides the sport. By 2026, the structure of major college football could be undergoing a massive transformation — not only a new poker hand but a different poker game.” Wilner goes on to note the ACC “just might crumble,” leaving Stanford and Cal with another difficult choice. “Do they remain in a conference based on the Atlantic Seaboard that has little media value and second-tier football competition? Or would they return home, join OSU and WSU and rebuild the Pac-12? Before dealing with all that, however, Wilner points out the Pac-2 still needs to sign a media rights agreement to broadcast their home football games in 2024 and 2025, decide when to part ways with Commissioner George Kliavkoff and determine the fate of the Pac-12 Networks. More from Wilner. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown has obtained the affiliate sports contract between the WCC and Washington State and Oregon State. WSU and OSU will pay required fees of $273K and $307K, respectively in each of the two seasons for a total of $1.16M. If either school decides not to compete as an affiliate in any of the mentioned sports for the 2024-2025 or 2025-2026 seasons, the school would also be required to pay an additional $125K withdrawal fee above and beyond the specific sports fees. The WCC also reserves the right to terminate affiliate membership in other sports. Meanwhile, WSU and OSU have until tomorrow to inform the WCC whether they plan to join as baseball members. Brown interprets the contract language to mean that all of the Beavers and Cougars’ affiliate sports broadcasts, including home games, would fall under the existing WCC media rights deal. This would include broadcasts for OSU and WSU basketball games. Also from Brown: “My reading from this is that the affiliate schools won’t get any of the WCC media rights television revenues. It is also unclear if ESPN and/or CBS Sports increased payouts because of Oregon State and Washington State-related inventory.” It also appears any NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament units earned by the league would not be distributed to WSU and OSU. Ole Miss finished FY23 with $142.2M in revenue and $150.2M in expenses. The $8M deficit is up from last year’s $5.2M shortfall, and Rebels AD Keith Carter says the losses were planned for and are covered by the athletic department's operational reserves. “We feel like we have a plan in obviously growing revenues, but finding a way to slow down those expenses as we go forward. … I feel like we have had to make up some ground, and we've had to kind of do that quickly. Most of it is in football, honestly. When you think about that, and us saying. 'Hey, we're going to go all in on football. We're going to commit to a coach. We're going to commit to a winning structure.' I think we've seen the results of that." The Rebels also spent roughly $2.8M more on support and administrative staff compensation than it did in fiscal year 2022. (link)

Missouri brought in a record $141,558,287 in revenue during FY23 and spent exactly one dollar less. While the revenue figure represents a 0.3% increase, the Tigers’ expenses were up 12.7%. Mizzou’s revenue included $37.5M in media rights revenue, $28M cash donations, and $22.7M in direct institutional support. Staff salaries and bonuses were the department’s biggest expense at $26.2M, followed by coaches’ compensation $25.48M and $16M in facilities debt/rental. More from the Mizzou balance sheet. (link)

Former LSU WR Kayshon Boutte is being charged with felony computer fraud, as well as a misdemeanor count of gaming prohibited for persons under 21. Boutte is accused of creating an online betting account under a fictitious name and then placing illegal bets while he was still under the age of 21 and not legally allowed to gamble. According to WAFB’s Scottie Hunter, Boutte’s “efforts led to more than $500K in winnings, with the vast majority of that money being used to place additional bets, investigators allege. Boutte, who is now 21, is currently listed on the roster of the New England Patriots. He played in five games for the Patriots last season. He is accused of placing nearly 9,000 illegal wagers including two bets on at least one LSU football game that he played in, his arrest warrant states.” (link)

WSU officials are in regular communication with KSHSAA – which remains committed to hosting 2024 State Track in Wichita – in development of an operational plan to ensure a first-class 2024 State High School Track meet in Wichita.” (link)
