TurnkeyZRG boss Len Perna is stewarding a “think tank,” which includes the likes of Syracuse President Kent Syverud & billionaire sports-focused investor David Blitzer, to work through what the future of college athletics could look like. Syverud to ESPN’s Pete Thamel on the potential of private equity entering the space: “It's been obvious the whole college sports system has been a dead man walking for three years, driven by legal developments. What's going to come out of it is the thing that hasn't been clear. The current system can't continue, it's a dead man walking. [...] I don't look at private equity as perfect or evil. I think we have to look at all the different pieces of the problem. There's a significant financial piece to this.” An unnamed Power 5 AD on the same topic: “It's a way of doing business that college athletics has never really engaged in. In the professional world, it's common practice -- for facilities, projects and payments.” Another anonymous industry source: “There's four or five venture capital companies all circling. These are big-time places that will come in. It means that if these guys are circling, it means we're not maximizing our revenue.” As for Perna: “All forms of investment capital, including private equity, can help grow an enterprise that's properly structured. College sports isn't properly structured legally, politically, commercially, etc. PE alone can't fix the core structural problems, but can play a role once they're solved. The difference between our group and other groups is that we're focusing first and foremost on how to correct the big, daunting, holistic structural issues in college sports. [...] The current rubric isn't academically tenable, nor affordable, nor even logical. It's worth the time to explore what alternative models could work better for student-athletes, schools, media partners, fans, etc.” Thamel says Perna & his group have had conversations with the NCAA. Lots more. (link)

Oregon State will play as a baseball independent next season. Beavers AD Scott Barnes: “Given the history, prominence and success of our baseball program as a national power, we are committed to building a national schedule that allows our student-athletes to compete with the best teams and at the highest level possible. We are well on our way to creating this.” (link)

Arizona’s acquisition of the for-profit Ashford University played a significant role in the university’s financial crisis, according to an investigation by The Arizona Republic, which found that even though UA technically purchased Ashford for $1, the transactions added roughly $265M to the school's operating budget in 2023. The investigation also found that enrollment at Ashford, now called University of Arizona Global Campus, has steadily declined over the last four years, and the institution lost about a third of its student body. Interim CFO John Arnold maintains the acquisition “has been nothing but a positive financial impact on the university,” adding that the UA Global Campus is on track to operate at just a deficit of $2.5M in 2024. WDRB’s Eric Crawford shares some takeaways from the Louisville Athletic Association’s meeting today. “Football revenue was budgeted aggressively, but still exceeded even those projections. Up 30%. Men’s basketball was conservatively budgeted, but still is expected to post a revenue shortfall in the neighborhood of $2M. Concessions and parking revenue for football were up $375K. Gifts are coming in a bit under budget.” On the expenses side, Crawford notes: “Winning costs money. Unbudgeted bonuses for coaches hitting incentives were an added expense. (U of L actually took out an insurance policy in the event football won more than expected — that saved more than $300K.). The Holiday Bowl was a loss of $600K.” In regards to football, more fans means more workers and security needed. Meanwhile, due to inflation, travel costs have been $1.8M over budget for all sports. (link); Crawford also reports that season ticket sales for football are up by 2,000 for next season — representing $1.5M in new revenue. (link); Cards AD Josh Heird addressed the struggles in men’s hoops: “I'm well aware that this program, this fan base, isn't into moral victories. And so, after every game, I feel like every day, it's consuming, what I'm doing right now. And I know it's consuming Kenny and his staff, as far as how do we get better? How does this basketball program get back to where we all expect it to be? And that expectation is a high bar, but nobody's going to run from that. And we're going to do everything we can to get this program back where we all want and expect it to be." (link)

Nebraska generated $204.8M in revenue during FY23, a $61M uptick over FY22. The increase, which helped the department finish the year with a nearly $14M surplus, was bolstered in large part by $61M in contributions to support the Huskers’ new $165M football facility. NU’s football program operated at a surplus of over $50M, and NU also brought in nearly $49M via the Big Ten’s media distribution. The Huskers also brought in over $31M from licensing and royalties. Kansas State Men’s Basketball HC Jerome Tang alerted officials during Wednesday’s matchup against Iowa State that his staff was concerned ISU had placed managers and/or other team representatives in spots behind the visiting bench where they could view, and possibly even record, the Wildcats as they huddled up during timeouts, according to the Wichita Eagle’s Kellis Robinett. K-State’s coaches were reportedly worried about those observers quickly passing information to the Iowa State bench via text messages. During the postgame handshake, Cyclones HC TJ Otzelberger appeared to ask for a precise location from Tang, and both coaches made similar gestures with their hands, perhaps in a reference to cell phones. Tang after the game told reporters: “I know you saw what you saw, but I’m not going to talk about it. I’m more than happy to talk about the game. TJ and I will go figure the other part of it out.” Otzelberger added: “There’s a point in time where things are said between coaches that needs to stay that way. So that’s where we’re going to keep it.” (link)

The Big Ten will limit participation in its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments to 15 of the 18 teams starting in 2025, according to The Athletic’s Dana O’Neil, who cites a source as saying that including all 18 teams would have required adding a sixth day of competition, something league officials found to be too unwieldy. Under the new format, O’Neil notes the league will add a game to the Wednesday slate between the tenth and 15th-place teams. The winner will face the No. 7 seed on Thursday, with the tournament otherwise proceeding in its normal fashion. (link)
