Outgoing DII SAAC chair/Wisconsin-Parkside External Relations/Women’s Basketball GA Emma Kramer sits down with Connect’s Stephanie Garcia Cichosz at the 2024 NCAA Convention about the priorities for the student-athletes voice, the “Life in the Balance” mantra and more. The largest priority, per Kramer: “We've heard a lot about congressional engagement efforts and a lot of the stuff around NIL. At the end of the day, the thing that I'm most passionate about is student-athletes and what's best for them. I know that's a pretty broad topic because there's a lot that falls under it, but in terms of the NIL debates, Division II and Division III student-athletes often aren't coming from institutions that are bringing in a ton of revenue so employment models and stuff like that is particularly concerning for our student-athletes because we are playing college sports to get that experience but also to get our degree, to get a higher education. Especially for my Division II student-athlete counterparts, a lot of times we're getting financial aid from our athletic abilities and our academic abilities and we know that employment models would really threaten that for us, so that's something that I'm particularly passionate about because I want future student-athletes to get the experiences that I had as a DII student athlete. So I'm very very passionate about ensuring that Division II remains a balanced division for our student athletes both academically and athletically.” More only on Connect. (link)

The DI Strategic Vision and Planning Committee discussed several topics at its meeting earlier this month, including a comprehensive review of membership requirements. In its final report, the committee and Football Oversight Committee Membership Subgroup recommended that SVPC conduct a comprehensive review of membership requirements over the next 12 to 24 months. Next steps in the review include SVPC continuing its analysis of the process for institutions to reclassify from DII or DIII to DI to determine whether the reclassification process may benefit from a framework focused on more objective membership standards. The committee will explore a three-year transition process for DII institutions moving to DI and a four-year transition process for those moving from DIII to DI, with the possibility to accelerate the process if elevated objective benchmarks are achieved. Objective membership categories SVPC will continue to explore include academics, athletic staffing, equity, facilities, financial aid, financial viability, health and safety, sports sponsorship and student-athlete services and benefits. SVPC will seek feedback from the FBS Oversight Committee on whether authority over the reclassification process should be transitioned to its purview. More in the full rundown. (link)

Minnesota State Moorhead rolls out preliminary plans for renovations to Alex Nemzek Hall, which would get started in 2026 at the earliest as MSUM has made a 2024 legislative session budget request of $43.4M for design funding. AD Chad Markuson: “The hope of the project is to really update our facilities and create a good viewing environment for our fans. It will provide top-notch facilities for our athletes and will enhance our academic offerings.” (link)

+ The RMAC suspends Chadron State Women’s Basketball HC Travis Brewster three games for pulling his team off the court in the third quarter, leading to a forfeit, against Adams State last weekend. From the release: “The choice by the Chadron State women’s basketball team to voluntarily forfeit the contest was unacceptable and contrary to the RMAC Philosophy Statement, Ethical Conduct Policy and spirit of the game. The decision was also wholly unfair to participating student-athletes. As a result, Chadron State head coach Travis Brewster shall be suspended for three games and the program shall be fined $5,000 for the violation. The RMAC Office would like to thank Chadron State administrators for their cooperation in this process. Chadron State College accepts the RMAC decision and will continue to fully cooperate with conference officials.” (link); Brewster cited “player safety” in making his decision. (link)

The U.S. economy grew at an unexpectedly brisk 3.3% annual pace during 2023 Q4, far surpassing the 2% gain expected by Wall Street. For all of 2023, the U.S. economy accelerated at a 2.5% annualized pace, well ahead of the Wall Street outlook at the beginning of the year and better than the 1.9% increase in 2022. There also was progress on inflation, as core prices for personal consumption expenditures rose 2% for the period, while the headline rate was 1.7%. (link)
