James Madison President Jonathan Alger & outgoing Dukes AD Jeff Bourne sit down with Connect’s Steph Garcia Chichosz to discuss the state of athletics in Harrisonburg, opportunities & challenges on the horizon, as well as what traits are needed in the next AD. Alger: “There are a variety of things I’ve learned from working with Jeff on the role of the AD and what it takes to be successful. It starts with understanding the culture of JMU and being a team player. Athletics is not an island that plays by its own set of rules. You are part of a larger educational institution with a focus on student-athlete success and welfare, not cutting corners. This is not a place where we want to win at all costs and turn a blind eye to everything else. The culture matters and integrity really matters.” Alger also talks about the requirement of fiscal responsibility by the new AD, as well as an ability to work constructively with university faculty & a holistic portfolio of sport success. Bourne’s advice to the next leader: “I would always err on the side of over communication. It’s all about relationships. You have to get to know people. Different people need different communication styles. There’s not anything broken here. There’s nothing that needs to be fixed. It’s about building relationships.” Lots more. (link)

The D1.dossier for James Madison’s AD opening is available now. Ball State AD Jeff Mitchell on his use of a dossier: “Possessing information lacks true value if it’s not pertinent, and D1.dossier offers a competitive advantage because it provides the right information to prospective candidates to help them prepare for an interview and the job itself when hired. I developed my unique outline to help get ready for my interviews at Ball State while using the D1.dossier feature. I found the information to be relevant and comprehensive. D1.dossiers is a must-have resource for college coaches and administrators.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione to ESPN’s Pete Thamel about the general state of college athletics: “The next six months are going to be fascinating to watch unfold. The next half of the year, a path is going to start forming. Whether [private equity in college athletics] gets support or is possible, plausible or legal, we don't know. Candidly, something needs to start forming. There's so many things happening simultaneously, there's never been a time like this in college athletics. Ever.” (link)

Outgoing North Carolina Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz sits down for a Q&A with Inside Carolina and acknowledges the “uncertainty [about the current landscape] is creating anxiety about how our institution's going to be able to support a strong, robust collegiate sports program.” He also believes it’s “likely that we're going to need to probably pull these collectives together here and get them all under one sort of enterprise because we have to be able to support women's field hockey and men's and women's lacrosse and soccer along with men's and women's basketball and football. … I could respond differently to this a year from now, but I think for now what we know is that getting it all under one collective makes sense. I think it will help us also with some of the Title IX challenges that NIL is creating and has the potential to create even greater challenges for Title IX." As the realignment chairs continue to shuffle, Guskiewicz says UNC is working hard to strengthen the ACC but remains in a strong position regardless of what comes next: “I think we have a national brand that people consider to be of high value. And many believe that geographically, we fit certainly in the SEC's footprint and that it's not much of a stretch for the Big Ten. Given that the question could be called at some point, we have to be prepared. … But also on the table, these risk-benefit analyses have to look at what the risks would be in terms of a potential move to another conference. It would likely come at a great initial expense to make an exit.” Lots more in the full interview. (link)

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs writes in a letter to the University of Arizona Board of Regents: “To say the situation demonstrates that there is significant work ahead to restore the university's financial health would be an understatement. This is no longer just about finances, this is about a lack of accountability, transparency and, at the end of the day, leadership. … In light of the recent developments,I no longer trust the process that is in place. In order to avoid this from becoming a case of the ‘fox guarding the henhouse,’ it is time to bring in an independent, third-party consultant” to conduct an external audit. Hobbs also calls on the ABOR to create clear lines of distinction between university governance and the ABOR and to present her office with a detailed report on strategies to solve the financial crisis by February 9. The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel shares his takeaways from the ACC’s first 17-team football schedule. 1) TV tactics - with ABC/ESPN becoming the exclusive home of the SEC, the ACC needed to schedule knowing many of the 24 ABC’s Saturday national telecasts from last season won’t be available.; 2) The Virginia Tech vs. Miami (FL) matchup will be a Friday night game instead of going head-to-head against Georgia-Alabama, Oklahoma-Auburn and Arkansas-Texas A&M the following day.; 3) Coast-to-coast - burdens of cross-country travel have been reduced as much as possible. Of the six ACC teams jetting from the Eastern time zone to Stanford or Cal, four have an open date afterward: Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, N.C. State and Miami (FL).; 4) Labor Day - Boston College travels to Florida State on September 2, marking the 18th time in the past 20 years that the ACC staged a primetime holiday kick.; 5) Black Friday - while all 17 teams are expected to close the regular season on Saturday, November 30, Teel expects at least one game to shift to that Friday. More context from Teel. (link)

Boston College Men’s Hockey knocked off Boston U. last night 4-1 in a matchup of the top two ranked teams in the nation where ticket prices on secondary markets were $300+ per ticket. Sportico’s Brendan Coffey provides more context on the growth of Men’s Hockey: “After a 15% rise in attendance last year across all top-division men’s programs, most schools are reporting another sizeable increase this year at just about the season’s halfway point. [...] Already this season, all 11 schools in Hockey East have sold out at least one game, believed to be a first before the season’s halfway mark, tallying 33 sellouts so far compared to 19 all last season.” More from Coffey as the Eagles & Terriers face off again tonight, this time in BU’s Agganis Arena. According to Sports Media Watch, the LSU vs. South Carolina women’s basketball tilt on Thursday night was the most-watched sporting event in the country, with an average audience of 1.56M. The game “out-drew both primetime NBA games that were broadcast on TNT on Thursday, including a Celtics-Heat game that was in the same time slot. Per the report, this was the second most-watched regular-season women’s college basketball game since 2010 (trailing only Ohio State’s overtime win over Caitlin Clark and Iowa last week).” (link)

Sportico’s Anthony Crupi observes that for all the talk of the decline of the cable bundle and TV usage overall, “the tens of millions of Americans who still put in time in front of the set are clearly sticking around for the sports. … For example, despite an 8% drop in overall TV usage this fall, CBS’ coverage of last Sunday’s Chiefs-Bills playoff battle averaged a record 50.4M viewers, of whom 17.4M, or 34%, were members of the adults 18-49 demo. And there were a fair amount of spring chickens in the mix, as 7.18M fans in the 18-34 range were tuned in, good for 14% of CBS’ overall deliveries.” Crupi, citing significant gains in NHL, NBA and college women’s basketball – as well as college football’s record-breaking season – adds: “Success has many fathers, but no DNA test is necessary to figure out what sired this year’s boom—chalk it up to the uptick in games televised on broadcast TV. In 2022, 106 college football games aired on one of the Big Four networks, a tally which jumped to 133 this year. (Or 146, if you count the ACC games carried by the CW.) … As our collective attention continues to be overwhelmed by the proliferation of streaming content, sports have displaced scripted shows as driver of the proverbial water cooler conversation. There will be a place for TV for as long as our national enthusiasm for sports continues to thrive. You’d have to be a dummy to believe otherwise." (link)

Central Arkansas, in partnership with INFLCR, launches the Bear Nation Exchange to aid UCA student-athletes with NIL opportunities. (link)

On3 CEO Shannon Terry offers his perspective on the “State of College Football 101,” explaining that “NIL opened the door for Roster Value deals, ‘primarily’ through Collectives, but not in all cases. Roster Value is > 90% of the overall NIL Market. ‘True’ NIL is less than 10%. Most CFB athletes have marginal ‘NIL’ value. A few teams are taking advantage of this time window and disproportionately participating in the Roster Value market. On3 tracks Roster Value deals through numerous sources. Roster Value is the driving data of a CFB athlete's NIL Valuation. Athletes are very aware of what they are worth in the market. Some athletes use Roster Value to qualify their school choices. HS recruits fall in this category for the most part. Meanwhile, most Transfer Portal athletes pick a school based on the best Roster Value deal. The Roster Value dollar pecking order: Current Roster > Transfer Portal > HS Recruits.” (link)

Butler announces Assoc. Vice President - Athletics Grant Leiendecker as Athletic Director. Bulldogs President James M. Danko: "Since returning to Butler last year, Grant has developed incredibly positive relationships with our student-athletes, coaches, staff, supporters and members of the University administration. I had the pleasure of speaking with many exceptional candidates throughout this process, but ultimately, Grant—with his vision, passion, and commitment to our mission and values—stood out above the others. He has a bold vision for Butler Athletics as intercollegiate athletics faces unprecedented transformation." TurnkeyZRG boss Len Perna is stewarding a “think tank,” which includes the likes of Syracuse President Kent Syverud & billionaire sports-focused investor David Blitzer, to work through what the future of college athletics could look like. Syverud to ESPN’s Pete Thamel on the potential of private equity entering the space: “It's been obvious the whole college sports system has been a dead man walking for three years, driven by legal developments. What's going to come out of it is the thing that hasn't been clear. The current system can't continue, it's a dead man walking. [...] I don't look at private equity as perfect or evil. I think we have to look at all the different pieces of the problem. There's a significant financial piece to this.” An unnamed Power 5 AD on the same topic: “It's a way of doing business that college athletics has never really engaged in. In the professional world, it's common practice -- for facilities, projects and payments.” Another anonymous industry source: “There's four or five venture capital companies all circling. These are big-time places that will come in. It means that if these guys are circling, it means we're not maximizing our revenue.” As for Perna: “All forms of investment capital, including private equity, can help grow an enterprise that's properly structured. College sports isn't properly structured legally, politically, commercially, etc. PE alone can't fix the core structural problems, but can play a role once they're solved. The difference between our group and other groups is that we're focusing first and foremost on how to correct the big, daunting, holistic structural issues in college sports. [...] The current rubric isn't academically tenable, nor affordable, nor even logical. It's worth the time to explore what alternative models could work better for student-athletes, schools, media partners, fans, etc.” Thamel says Perna & his group have had conversations with the NCAA. Lots more. (link)

We are well on our way to creating this.” (link)

Arizona’s acquisition of the for-profit Ashford University played a significant role in the university’s financial crisis, according to an investigation by The Arizona Republic, which found that even though UA technically purchased Ashford for $1, the transactions added roughly $265M to the school's operating budget in 2023. The investigation also found that enrollment at Ashford, now called University of Arizona Global Campus, has steadily declined over the last four years, and the institution lost about a third of its student body. Interim CFO John Arnold maintains the acquisition “has been nothing but a positive financial impact on the university,” adding that the UA Global Campus is on track to operate at just a deficit of $2.5M in 2024. WDRB’s Eric Crawford shares some takeaways from the Louisville Athletic Association’s meeting today. “Football revenue was budgeted aggressively, but still exceeded even those projections. Up 30%. Men’s basketball was conservatively budgeted, but still is expected to post a revenue shortfall in the neighborhood of $2M. Concessions and parking revenue for football were up $375K. Gifts are coming in a bit under budget.” On the expenses side, Crawford notes: “Winning costs money. Unbudgeted bonuses for coaches hitting incentives were an added expense. (U of L actually took out an insurance policy in the event football won more than expected — that saved more than $300K.). The Holiday Bowl was a loss of $600K.” In regards to football, more fans means more workers and security needed. Meanwhile, due to inflation, travel costs have been $1.8M over budget for all sports. (link); Crawford also reports that season ticket sales for football are up by 2,000 for next season — representing $1.5M in new revenue. (link); Cards AD Josh Heird addressed the struggles in men’s hoops: “I'm well aware that this program, this fan base, isn't into moral victories. And so, after every game, I feel like every day, it's consuming, what I'm doing right now. And I know it's consuming Kenny and his staff, as far as how do we get better? How does this basketball program get back to where we all expect it to be? And that expectation is a high bar, but nobody's going to run from that. And we're going to do everything we can to get this program back where we all want and expect it to be." (link)

Nebraska generated $204.8M in revenue during FY23, a $61M uptick over FY22. The increase, which helped the department finish the year with a nearly $14M surplus, was bolstered in large part by $61M in contributions to support the Huskers’ new $165M football facility. NU’s football program operated at a surplus of over $50M, and NU also brought in nearly $49M via the Big Ten’s media distribution. The Huskers also brought in over $31M from licensing and royalties. Accumulated coaching salaries went from $23.28M in FY22 to $26.1M in FY23. in 2022-2023. Accumulated administrative/staff salaries went from $28.6M to $32.25M. (link)

Kansas State Men’s Basketball HC Jerome Tang alerted officials during Wednesday’s matchup against Iowa State that his staff was concerned ISU had placed managers and/or other team representatives in spots behind the visiting bench where they could view, and possibly even record, the Wildcats as they huddled up during timeouts, according to the Wichita Eagle’s Kellis Robinett. K-State’s coaches were reportedly worried about those observers quickly passing information to the Iowa State bench via text messages. During the postgame handshake, Cyclones HC TJ Otzelberger appeared to ask for a precise location from Tang, and both coaches made similar gestures with their hands, perhaps in a reference to cell phones. Tang after the game told reporters: “I know you saw what you saw, but I’m not going to talk about it. I’m more than happy to talk about the game. TJ and I will go figure the other part of it out.” Otzelberger added: “There’s a point in time where things are said between coaches that needs to stay that way. So that’s where we’re going to keep it.” (link)

The Big Ten will limit participation in its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments to 15 of the 18 teams starting in 2025, according to The Athletic’s Dana O’Neil, who cites a source as saying that including all 18 teams would have required adding a sixth day of competition, something league officials found to be too unwieldy. Under the new format, O’Neil notes the league will add a game to the Wednesday slate between the tenth and 15th-place teams. The winner will face the No. 7 seed on Thursday, with the tournament otherwise proceeding in its normal fashion. (link)
