VMI AD Jim Miller announces his retirement after stepping into the post on a permanent basis in July 2022, per the Richmond Times-Dispatch's John O'Connor. Miller intends to remain with the Keydets until his successor is selected. (link)

Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard adamantly denies the suggestion that Cyclones Men’s Basketball managers were recording the Kansas State huddle on their cell phone and texting the information to the ISU bench during a matchup between the two programs earlier in the week: “It absolutely did not happen. It’s a ridiculous allegation that is not fair to our coaches, our student managers and our players. I’m extremely disappointed that the Kansas State basketball staff has allowed this to fester, because it’s not right.” (link)

USC AD Jennifer Cohen talks about NIL, the transfer portal, construction timelines for facility projects & more on the Peristyle Podcast. On NIL: “I think we’re going to get more clarity on those rules and enforcement on those rules moving forward. [...] The reality is that we are serving our current student-athletes well & if we are providing not only great coaches and great facilities, but also opportunities through NIL, we are going to retain our student-athletes and recruit the best of the best. [...] We are really competitive in NIL when it comes to our donor collective and we’re even more competitive when you combine that with brand opportunities in LA. [...] It’s my job as the Athletic Director to develop the best services and programs for all of our student-athletes and NIL has been a top priority for me since I got here. [...] We will be evolving our in-house NIL program again. It could be that we have an in-house agency, it could be that we outsource to somebody like WME, we might do that more locally. We’re not behind in that space.” As for the facilities roadmap: “We’re building a new Soccer & Lacrosse facility that we’ll break ground on in four to six weeks. [...] We’re building a 163,000 square foot football center. Coaches offices, recruiting spaces, really excited about the sports science component. We’re also adding a new practice field that will be ready for the fall. The new football center will be finished in 2026. We’re making great progress. We’re raising $200M and so far we’ve raised over $80M.” Lots more from Cohen. (link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock believes football’s progress under HC Brett Pry is “on schedule,” adds, “It’s nice to be in a department with high fan expectations coming up. It’s been a few years since we had that. As much as we try to tamp it down, I’d much rather be in that situation. We’ve kind of been wandering the desert here for four years in football. Seeing it bounce back is what we’ve been waiting on. That was very rewarding. Now we’ve got to do it again.” Babcock also talks football scheduling strategy, with future matchups on the docket against the likes of Alabama, Arizona, BYU, Maryland, Ole Miss, South Carolina & Wisconsin: “It’s easier to put more marquee-type games, if that’s the right word, on down the road because their coach may not want to play us at that particular time, ours may not want to play them, but if you can push it out enough, that’s an easier way to schedule and you don’t want to get jammed up and overpay if your schedule is empty a year or two out. It’s just the way we’ve done it. It has not stayed the same very much. I’m sure there will be change. We don’t have anything cooking on that front right now.” (link)

As part of his introduction of Sherrone Moore as Michigan’s new Football HC, Wolverines AD Warde Manuel addresses the potential for NCAA penalties connected to issues within the program last season: “It's something that we have to deal with and he knows that, and he's willing to take it on and understand that it's gonna come up and it's gonna come a time when we have to deal with it. And we’ll figure it out.” (link); Manuel was also asked about the job security of Men’s Basketball HC Juwan Howard: “I have not spent one moment thinking about anything but supporting Juwan and this team. I haven’t thought about the evaluation of the season. All of that stuff comes at the end of the season. I’ve done it in my career but it’s extremely rare for me to make a decision in the middle of the season. Something has really got to be off. I’ve not thought about it. I have not talked to him about it. We haven’t had that conversation. All that stuff happens and will happen at the end of the season. My focus with Juwan and each of our teams is to support them to have success.” (link)

Florida A&M AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes removes the interim tag from James Colzie III, naming him the Rattlers next football HC. Sykes: “I am thrilled to announce Coach James Colzie Ill as our new head football coach. I extend my deepest gratitude to President Larry Robinson, the FAMU Board of Trustees, Chairwoman Kristin Harper, and the entire FAMU community for their unwavering support throughout this process. …. I also appreciate Dr. Donald Palm and the dedicated search committee for their commitment to completing a swift yet thorough process. Coach Colzie’s dedication as interim head coach and now as our permanent leader exemplifies his commitment to excellence.” Renaissance Search & Consulting assisted in the process. (link)

The Iowa women’s basketball program hauled in $3.8M+ in FY23, more than doubling any prior recent year. Behind UI’s revenue increase was a near doubling in reported ticket sales, as well, from $767,069 in FY22 to $1.44M in FY23. Of note from Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “Iowa’s spending on women’s basketball also jumped significantly, from $5,967,007 in 2021-22 to $8,211,453 in 2022-23, most of which owed to team travel ($2,165,596). The school reported that it lost $4.4 million on its women’s basketball program in 2022-23, which was nearly equal to what it claims it netted on men’s basketball ($4.29 million).” (link)

On3’s Eric Prisbell talks with Altius Sports Partners leaders about the future of college sports as Partner/CEO Casey Schwab remarks: “I can safely say that big-time football players in college and big-time basketball players, as defined by Power 5, plus the Big East in basketball, will be sharing in the revenue. The real question is how do we get there? And how ugly and how difficult and painful is the path to get there? … I am suggesting taking a long, hard look at those two buckets (revenue, expenses). How do we raise revenue, knowing we’re going to have to share it and knowing there is going to come a day when House is either going to be litigated to the fullest extent, and there’s going to be a judgment that could result in a large number, or it is going to be settled. And in all likelihood, it is going to be settled.” COO Tommy Gray adds: “Our perspective on this is that we’re absolutely going to see some form of revenue sharing, possibly in combination with some form of athlete employment, quasi-employment, or collective bargaining. … So our recommendation to athletic departments is to start preparing now for many different models of governance, organizational structure, staffing levels, and athlete support services. Let’s start looking at each of those things proactively, and let’s scenario plan, including forecasting what your revenues and expenses look like under different models.” Schwab on private equity entering college sports: “If one school goes and does it, it’s very much a follow-the-leader industry, where other schools will be more likely to follow. Do I think outside capital is going to come into college athletics? Yes, I absolutely do.” (link)

Rice partners with Collegiate Sports Connect to boost its administrative talent, networking, identification, recruitment & hiring efforts. Owls Deputy AD Eric George: “Talented people are the core of any successful organization, and we are excited to partner with Connect to help identify and recruit high-quality professionals. There is a wave of positive momentum and excitement surrounding Rice Athletics, and Connect will help us reach our potential and deliver an unparalleled experience for our student-athletes by attracting the brightest minds to add to our team.” (link)

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is close to inking a contract extension that could see him lead the league through the end of the decade. Notably: “The completion of formal negotiations with the board of governors on a new deal keeps Silver -- nearing his 10th anniversary as commissioner -- on course to pursue the NBA's next set of major objectives: a new media rights deal and league expansion.” (link)

The series is being produced by Campfire Studios, Shaquille O'Neal and Axios. (link)

Two years after an Alabama Board of Trustees committee gave the approval to begin exploring the process of replacing Coleman Coliseum, AL.com’s Michael Casagrande observes that “this hypothetical arena has appeared on exactly zero more meeting agendas. Meanwhile, Coleman needed 17 minutes to get working lights on Wednesday night.” Why? “Look no further than the lapel of Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne’s jacket during the blackout game. It wasn’t the traditional ‘script A’, rather the pennant shaped logo of Yea Alabama, the Crimson Tide’s official NIL collective. When asking what’s changed the most since the conceptual illustrations of this potential new facility went public, here’s your answer. The arms race is a two-front battle – one that now extends beyond the newest and finest facilities. … [The] collection plate is being passed a second time and the priority has clearly been on the Jimmys and Joes over the land movers and backhoes.” More. SBJ’s Bret McCormick sits down with Las Vegas Aces President Nikki Fargas, Seattle Storm co-owner Ginny Gilder and Boston Unity Soccer Partners Controlling Partner Jennifer Epstein about the increased focus on building sports facilities with women in mind, both fans and athletes. Fargas says of the Aces’ new $40M facility that grabbed headlines last year: “There were a lot of conversations with the players to dive into what was sacred to them. What was your routine? Making it accessible and safe for them to come in and out of the facility, so they have access to the facility if they want to be there at 10 at night. Even creating where they park, how they enter the building, having 24-hour security services available for them. ... And to have an owner like Mark Davis – it's great to have men who are allies, who understand. ... For us to have their story told through the process of designing this facility is special.” Gilder notes that the Storm started as an affiliated franchise, “but I think one of the reasons, frankly, that we were interested in buying the team was we didn't want to be the tail on the dog. … It's a very different ballgame, being an independent team. There are advantages and disadvantages. Obviously, NBA owners have really good facilities. They control, for the most part, their arenas. They can provide what they want to their women's teams. And that's not necessarily the case with an independent, but we have the luxury of only focusing on our business. ... We've been building a business for 16 years, and for us, that's allowed us to really focus on what a women's team needs as opposed to a women's team within a larger context.” More. (link)

James Madison President Jonathan Alger & outgoing Dukes AD Jeff Bourne sit down with Connect’s Steph Garcia Chichosz to discuss the state of athletics in Harrisonburg, opportunities & challenges on the horizon, as well as what traits are needed in the next AD. Alger: “There are a variety of things I’ve learned from working with Jeff on the role of the AD and what it takes to be successful. It starts with understanding the culture of JMU and being a team player. Athletics is not an island that plays by its own set of rules. You are part of a larger educational institution with a focus on student-athlete success and welfare, not cutting corners. This is not a place where we want to win at all costs and turn a blind eye to everything else. The culture matters and integrity really matters.” Alger also talks about the requirement of fiscal responsibility by the new AD, as well as an ability to work constructively with university faculty & a holistic portfolio of sport success. Bourne’s advice to the next leader: “I would always err on the side of over communication. It’s all about relationships. You have to get to know people. Different people need different communication styles. There’s not anything broken here. There’s nothing that needs to be fixed. It’s about building relationships.” Lots more. (link)

The D1.dossier for James Madison’s AD opening is available now. Ball State AD Jeff Mitchell on his use of a dossier: “Possessing information lacks true value if it’s not pertinent, and D1.dossier offers a competitive advantage because it provides the right information to prospective candidates to help them prepare for an interview and the job itself when hired. I developed my unique outline to help get ready for my interviews at Ball State while using the D1.dossier feature. I found the information to be relevant and comprehensive. D1.dossiers is a must-have resource for college coaches and administrators.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione to ESPN’s Pete Thamel about the general state of college athletics: “The next six months are going to be fascinating to watch unfold. The next half of the year, a path is going to start forming. Whether [private equity in college athletics] gets support or is possible, plausible or legal, we don't know. Candidly, something needs to start forming. There's so many things happening simultaneously, there's never been a time like this in college athletics. Ever.” (link)

Outgoing North Carolina Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz sits down for a Q&A with Inside Carolina and acknowledges the “uncertainty [about the current landscape] is creating anxiety about how our institution's going to be able to support a strong, robust collegiate sports program.” He also believes it’s “likely that we're going to need to probably pull these collectives together here and get them all under one sort of enterprise because we have to be able to support women's field hockey and men's and women's lacrosse and soccer along with men's and women's basketball and football. … I could respond differently to this a year from now, but I think for now what we know is that getting it all under one collective makes sense. I think it will help us also with some of the Title IX challenges that NIL is creating and has the potential to create even greater challenges for Title IX." As the realignment chairs continue to shuffle, Guskiewicz says UNC is working hard to strengthen the ACC but remains in a strong position regardless of what comes next: “I think we have a national brand that people consider to be of high value. And many believe that geographically, we fit certainly in the SEC's footprint and that it's not much of a stretch for the Big Ten. Given that the question could be called at some point, we have to be prepared. … But also on the table, these risk-benefit analyses have to look at what the risks would be in terms of a potential move to another conference. It would likely come at a great initial expense to make an exit.” Lots more in the full interview. (link)

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs writes in a letter to the University of Arizona Board of Regents: “To say the situation demonstrates that there is significant work ahead to restore the university's financial health would be an understatement. This is no longer just about finances, this is about a lack of accountability, transparency and, at the end of the day, leadership. … In light of the recent developments,I no longer trust the process that is in place. In order to avoid this from becoming a case of the ‘fox guarding the henhouse,’ it is time to bring in an independent, third-party consultant” to conduct an external audit. Hobbs also calls on the ABOR to create clear lines of distinction between university governance and the ABOR and to present her office with a detailed report on strategies to solve the financial crisis by February 9. Full letter. (link)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel shares his takeaways from the ACC’s first 17-team football schedule. 1) TV tactics - with ABC/ESPN becoming the exclusive home of the SEC, the ACC needed to schedule knowing many of the 24 ABC’s Saturday national telecasts from last season won’t be available.; 2) The Virginia Tech vs. Miami (FL) matchup will be a Friday night game instead of going head-to-head against Georgia-Alabama, Oklahoma-Auburn and Arkansas-Texas A&M the following day.; 3) Coast-to-coast - burdens of cross-country travel have been reduced as much as possible. Of the six ACC teams jetting from the Eastern time zone to Stanford or Cal, four have an open date afterward: Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, N.C. State and Miami (FL).; 4) Labor Day - Boston College travels to Florida State on September 2, marking the 18th time in the past 20 years that the ACC staged a primetime holiday kick.; 5) Black Friday - while all 17 teams are expected to close the regular season on Saturday, November 30, Teel expects at least one game to shift to that Friday. More context from Teel. (link)

Boston College Men’s Hockey knocked off Boston U. last night 4-1 in a matchup of the top two ranked teams in the nation where ticket prices on secondary markets were $300+ per ticket. Sportico’s Brendan Coffey provides more context on the growth of Men’s Hockey: “After a 15% rise in attendance last year across all top-division men’s programs, most schools are reporting another sizeable increase this year at just about the season’s halfway point. [...] Already this season, all 11 schools in Hockey East have sold out at least one game, believed to be a first before the season’s halfway mark, tallying 33 sellouts so far compared to 19 all last season.” More from Coffey as the Eagles & Terriers face off again tonight, this time in BU’s Agganis Arena. According to Sports Media Watch, the LSU vs. South Carolina women’s basketball tilt on Thursday night was the most-watched sporting event in the country, with an average audience of 1.56M. The game “out-drew both primetime NBA games that were broadcast on TNT on Thursday, including a Celtics-Heat game that was in the same time slot. Per the report, this was the second most-watched regular-season women’s college basketball game since 2010 (trailing only Ohio State’s overtime win over Caitlin Clark and Iowa last week).” (link)

Sportico’s Anthony Crupi observes that for all the talk of the decline of the cable bundle and TV usage overall, “the tens of millions of Americans who still put in time in front of the set are clearly sticking around for the sports. … For example, despite an 8% drop in overall TV usage this fall, CBS’ coverage of last Sunday’s Chiefs-Bills playoff battle averaged a record 50.4M viewers, of whom 17.4M, or 34%, were members of the adults 18-49 demo. And there were a fair amount of spring chickens in the mix, as 7.18M fans in the 18-34 range were tuned in, good for 14% of CBS’ overall deliveries.” Crupi, citing significant gains in NHL, NBA and college women’s basketball – as well as college football’s record-breaking season – adds: “Success has many fathers, but no DNA test is necessary to figure out what sired this year’s boom—chalk it up to the uptick in games televised on broadcast TV. In 2022, 106 college football games aired on one of the Big Four networks, a tally which jumped to 133 this year. (Or 146, if you count the ACC games carried by the CW.) … As our collective attention continues to be overwhelmed by the proliferation of streaming content, sports have displaced scripted shows as driver of the proverbial water cooler conversation. There will be a place for TV for as long as our national enthusiasm for sports continues to thrive. You’d have to be a dummy to believe otherwise." (link)

On3 CEO Shannon Terry offers his perspective on the “State of College Football 101,” explaining that “NIL opened the door for Roster Value deals, ‘primarily’ through Collectives, but not in all cases. Roster Value is > 90% of the overall NIL Market. ‘True’ NIL is less than 10%. Most CFB athletes have marginal ‘NIL’ value. A few teams are taking advantage of this time window and disproportionately participating in the Roster Value market. On3 tracks Roster Value deals through numerous sources. Roster Value is the driving data of a CFB athlete's NIL Valuation. Athletes are very aware of what they are worth in the market. Some athletes use Roster Value to qualify their school choices. HS recruits fall in this category for the most part. Meanwhile, most Transfer Portal athletes pick a school based on the best Roster Value deal. The Roster Value dollar pecking order: Current Roster > Transfer Portal > HS Recruits.” (link)
