More Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock, who tells The Roanoke Times’ Mark Berman that upgrading Cassell Coliseum is still on the agenda. “I do believe NIL has played a role in that [Cassell project] slowing. But I do regret…we haven’t got that project done yet. I’d certainly like to have it happen sooner or later. We’ve had a number of people step up. We just haven’t been able to cross a certain dollar threshold to get a full design, a full price and kind of get it moving.” Babcock says he’d like to have about $10M in hand before starting the design phase and the Hokies are still $2.5M away. While the total cost won’t be known until after the design phase, Babcock believes it will be roughly $40-50M, which is lower than the original 2021 plan. “That [2021 plan] was before this new era of…NIL. I don’t know if you want to use up all your resources on an ostentatious Taj Mahal. But when we do it, it needs to set the course for the next 30 or 40 years. You don’t want to go low.” Babcock believes NIL will slow down the facilities arms race in college sports, telling Berman: “I’ve never heard a free agent in any professional sport say they went anywhere because of the facilities. Now, your facilities have to be good enough to show that it’s important and a commitment. But I do think at the end of all this that the NIL model actually could be less expensive. … I would predict in the not-too-distant future it will all be back under one umbrella.” More from Babcock. Nebraska is redoubling its focus on branding, as AD Trev Alberts explained during a call-in show last week: "I think if you've noticed, our uniforms across the board, we're wearing red. We're Nebraska. And if you don't want to wear red, you might have to go to a different school.” Alberts noted that scaling back the merchandise offerings has actually led to a greater revenue stream. "We actually have significantly contracted our brand book and we've gained some consistency there. And what's happened is our royalty payments that we get has actually increased. We have the highest royalty increase that we've had in a long time. So sometimes we're our own worst enemy. We think we're going to be really creative and we're going to come up with all this." Colorado State AD Joe Parker sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown and Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2024 NCAA Convention to reflect on the major inflection points throughout his career, including his nearly nine years leading the Rams. Parker discusses the value of football oversight as a senior leader and the importance of Deputy AD experience, crediting Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt with preparing him to take the leap to an AD role himself. Parker: “The preparation I did for the four years leading up to [the Colorado State opportunity] at Texas Tech made me feel like I was nearly in the chair.” Parker also digs into developing and reinforcing departmental culture, mission and core values, how he empowers senior staff and supports mid-level managers on his team and how he draws the line between personal and professional personas. Parker explains that “we want our place to be known as a place where anywhere else can come to find talent. That helps refresh the department.” That also means 20-30% of the staff is new at an annual meeting during which CSU reinforces the department’s culture. “I use that as an opportunity to remind everyone of our mission, of our guiding principle, and I have that discussion. Also, I talk about how I define leadership and I also talk about the cultural expectations that I have for the department and how we're going to behave and treat each other. So, guiding principles are a big part of that.” More on ADU. (link)

Loyola Marymount AD Craig Pintens tells the Los Angeles Times’ Chuck Schilken that a study conducted last fall to evaluate the athletic department as a whole was prompted by “a combination of all the significant changes that have occurred and will be occurring.” Pintens went on to explain that “we are in a time of exponential and rapid change across intercollegiate athletics, requiring that LMU Athletics also adapt to be competitive and successful in the future. This was a complex decision that was made after carefully considering various internal and external factors, in consultation with external partners and select university leadership.” As the department positions itself for the future, Pintens noted that LMU has had to hire a new staff member to handle NIL matters, including student-athlete education and the university’s compliance with NCAA rules. “Schools that do not devote meaningful attention to NIL opportunities, education and compliance may struggle to compete in the future, particularly when taking into account the transfer portal We want to be prepared for any direction that NIL may take in future years, including the strong possibility that schools will be able to be involved with NIL within the framework of an institution and athletic department.” LMU says the discontinuation of six sports will not result in the elimination of staff positions. Collegiate Sports Connect has reviewed and aggregated data for FBS HC turnover from the 2015-23 seasons and found that the 2023 offseason was a relatively high year for HC turnover, with 28 changes (21% of FBS), surpassing the 2015-23 average of 24 changes (~18% of FBS). The 2023 market clearly placed a premium on prior DI HC experience, as only nine of the 28 (32%) new HCs are first-time head coaches. Of those nine, only four were external candidates, implying there was an extremely narrow path (14%) for external first-time HC candidates this cycle. Of 14 fired HCs this offseason, all but two were at least in their fourth season. From 2015-23, FBS HCs have been nearly 3x more likely to be fired or retire than to advance to a bigger job. Meanwhile, 76 HCs (57%) will enter the 2024 season in their first, second or third year with the program, and 109 current HCs (82%) have completed five or fewer seasons as HC of their current team. Only 21 of 50 (42%) FBS HC hires made immediately before the 2019 and 2020 seasons are still in their roles, and just 10 of 68 (15%) FBS HC hires made immediately before the 2016, 2017, and 2018 seasons are still in their roles. Only five (4%) current FBS HCs began their tenure before the 2012 season. Lots more. (link)

ECU AD Jon Gilbert shares a department update and says of the Pirates’ football scheduling philosophy: “Ideally, we would play four non-conference games that include an opponent from a power five conference, a home and away game against a Group of 5 program and one FCS home game. You want to allow your program to have success and build momentum heading into conference play. It does not always work out in this manner, but that is the goal.” Gilbert also notes the Pirates have added a “TV-visible LED on the backstop” of Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium in time for the baseball season. “Our multi-media rights partner, PlayFly, purchased the board for the TV broadcast to generate new revenues for ECU Athletics.” (link)

Morehead State AD Kelly Wells discussed with the Maysville Rotary Club how the Eagles will go about building a championship culture. Specifically, Wells explained MSU aims to retain coaches and staff by creating growth opportunities and providing support, recruiting and retaining student-athletes who will compete for championships and pursuing equipment and other technologies that enhance student-athlete training and development. Wells also said the department will focus on increasing MSU foundation memberships, maintaining and growing revenue streams and continuing to work with multimedia rights partners to gain additional revenue opportunities. Additionally, Wells emphasized the importance of investing in the emotional and psychological wellbeing of student-athletes as well as supporting them in their academic pursuits. “I believe success really is just a byproduct of doing a whole lot of things right. I think that’s the greatest legacy we can give is the opportunity to give somebody an education.” (link)

Ohio State AD Gene Smith says he’s not ready to make any big-picture decisions about the men’s basketball team, which is currently 13-7 (3-6) and 11th in the Big Ten. “We have a lot of this season left to play, and we have coaches and players that are focused on winning every day. I’m looking forward to seeing how this turns out.” Following this weekend’s loss to Northwestern, MBB HC Chris Holtmann was asked about his confidence in his ability to lead the team out of this stretch during which the Buckeyes have lost five of their last six and said: “You coach long enough, you have moments that are certainly really humbling and that’s part of being in a profession like this. For all of us, we’ve got to find a way to get them in a better mindset and prepare to play better than what we’ve played. I don’t think we played nearly this poorly during this (entire) stretch, but we certainly have this last game and a half. We’ve got to figure out how to correct it here quickly.” (link)

Norfolk State Men’s Basketball HC Robert Jones voices his frustration with the decision to no longer award automatic NIT bids for regular season champions and tells HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither: “If you’re trying to eliminate the little man, just say so. It’s almost like, de-valuing the regular season. Because let’s face it, outside of Power Six if you don’t win the tournament in all these respective leagues — probably like 20 other respective leagues — no one’s getting an at-large bid, (in the) postseason. … I’ve been around his game a long time. I tell you as much the 10th place team [in] the ACC — and I don’t know who it is this year — is probably just as good as the first-place MEAC team. I mean…I’ve been around this game a long time and we’ve seen it time and time again.” (link)

Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard adamantly denies the suggestion that Cyclones Men’s Basketball managers were recording the Kansas State huddle on their cell phone and texting the information to the ISU bench during a matchup between the two programs earlier in the week: “It absolutely did not happen. It’s a ridiculous allegation that is not fair to our coaches, our student managers and our players. I’m extremely disappointed that the Kansas State basketball staff has allowed this to fester, because it’s not right.” (link)

USC AD Jennifer Cohen talks about NIL, the transfer portal, construction timelines for facility projects & more on the Peristyle Podcast. On NIL: “I think we’re going to get more clarity on those rules and enforcement on those rules moving forward. [...] The reality is that we are serving our current student-athletes well & if we are providing not only great coaches and great facilities, but also opportunities through NIL, we are going to retain our student-athletes and recruit the best of the best. [...] We are really competitive in NIL when it comes to our donor collective and we’re even more competitive when you combine that with brand opportunities in LA. [...] It’s my job as the Athletic Director to develop the best services and programs for all of our student-athletes and NIL has been a top priority for me since I got here. [...] We will be evolving our in-house NIL program again. It could be that we have an in-house agency, it could be that we outsource to somebody like WME, we might do that more locally. We’re not behind in that space.” As for the facilities roadmap: “We’re building a new Soccer & Lacrosse facility that we’ll break ground on in four to six weeks. [...] We’re building a 163,000 square foot football center. Coaches offices, recruiting spaces, really excited about the sports science component. We’re also adding a new practice field that will be ready for the fall. The new football center will be finished in 2026. We’re making great progress. We’re raising $200M and so far we’ve raised over $80M.” Lots more from Cohen. (link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock believes football’s progress under HC Brett Pry is “on schedule,” adds, “It’s nice to be in a department with high fan expectations coming up. It’s been a few years since we had that. As much as we try to tamp it down, I’d much rather be in that situation. We’ve kind of been wandering the desert here for four years in football. Seeing it bounce back is what we’ve been waiting on. That was very rewarding. Now we’ve got to do it again.” Babcock also talks football scheduling strategy, with future matchups on the docket against the likes of Alabama, Arizona, BYU, Maryland, Ole Miss, South Carolina & Wisconsin: “It’s easier to put more marquee-type games, if that’s the right word, on down the road because their coach may not want to play us at that particular time, ours may not want to play them, but if you can push it out enough, that’s an easier way to schedule and you don’t want to get jammed up and overpay if your schedule is empty a year or two out. It’s just the way we’ve done it. It has not stayed the same very much. I’m sure there will be change. We don’t have anything cooking on that front right now.” (link)

As part of his introduction of Sherrone Moore as Michigan’s new Football HC, Wolverines AD Warde Manuel addresses the potential for NCAA penalties connected to issues within the program last season: “It's something that we have to deal with and he knows that, and he's willing to take it on and understand that it's gonna come up and it's gonna come a time when we have to deal with it. And we’ll figure it out.” (link); Manuel was also asked about the job security of Men’s Basketball HC Juwan Howard: “I have not spent one moment thinking about anything but supporting Juwan and this team. I haven’t thought about the evaluation of the season. All of that stuff comes at the end of the season. I’ve done it in my career but it’s extremely rare for me to make a decision in the middle of the season. Something has really got to be off. I’ve not thought about it. I have not talked to him about it. We haven’t had that conversation. All that stuff happens and will happen at the end of the season. My focus with Juwan and each of our teams is to support them to have success.” (link)

Florida A&M AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes removes the interim tag from James Colzie III, naming him the Rattlers next football HC. Sykes: “I am thrilled to announce Coach James Colzie Ill as our new head football coach. I extend my deepest gratitude to President Larry Robinson, the FAMU Board of Trustees, Chairwoman Kristin Harper, and the entire FAMU community for their unwavering support throughout this process. …. I also appreciate Dr. Donald Palm and the dedicated search committee for their commitment to completing a swift yet thorough process. Coach Colzie’s dedication as interim head coach and now as our permanent leader exemplifies his commitment to excellence.” Renaissance Search & Consulting assisted in the process. (link)

The Iowa women’s basketball program hauled in $3.8M+ in FY23, more than doubling any prior recent year. Behind UI’s revenue increase was a near doubling in reported ticket sales, as well, from $767,069 in FY22 to $1.44M in FY23. Of note from Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “Iowa’s spending on women’s basketball also jumped significantly, from $5,967,007 in 2021-22 to $8,211,453 in 2022-23, most of which owed to team travel ($2,165,596). The school reported that it lost $4.4 million on its women’s basketball program in 2022-23, which was nearly equal to what it claims it netted on men’s basketball ($4.29 million).” (link)

On3’s Eric Prisbell talks with Altius Sports Partners leaders about the future of college sports as Partner/CEO Casey Schwab remarks: “I can safely say that big-time football players in college and big-time basketball players, as defined by Power 5, plus the Big East in basketball, will be sharing in the revenue. The real question is how do we get there? And how ugly and how difficult and painful is the path to get there? … I am suggesting taking a long, hard look at those two buckets (revenue, expenses). How do we raise revenue, knowing we’re going to have to share it and knowing there is going to come a day when House is either going to be litigated to the fullest extent, and there’s going to be a judgment that could result in a large number, or it is going to be settled. And in all likelihood, it is going to be settled.” COO Tommy Gray adds: “Our perspective on this is that we’re absolutely going to see some form of revenue sharing, possibly in combination with some form of athlete employment, quasi-employment, or collective bargaining. … So our recommendation to athletic departments is to start preparing now for many different models of governance, organizational structure, staffing levels, and athlete support services. Let’s start looking at each of those things proactively, and let’s scenario plan, including forecasting what your revenues and expenses look like under different models.” Schwab on private equity entering college sports: “If one school goes and does it, it’s very much a follow-the-leader industry, where other schools will be more likely to follow. Do I think outside capital is going to come into college athletics? Yes, I absolutely do.” (link)

Rice partners with Collegiate Sports Connect to boost its administrative talent, networking, identification, recruitment & hiring efforts. Owls Deputy AD Eric George: “Talented people are the core of any successful organization, and we are excited to partner with Connect to help identify and recruit high-quality professionals. There is a wave of positive momentum and excitement surrounding Rice Athletics, and Connect will help us reach our potential and deliver an unparalleled experience for our student-athletes by attracting the brightest minds to add to our team.” (link)

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is close to inking a contract extension that could see him lead the league through the end of the decade. Notably: “The completion of formal negotiations with the board of governors on a new deal keeps Silver -- nearing his 10th anniversary as commissioner -- on course to pursue the NBA's next set of major objectives: a new media rights deal and league expansion.” (link)

LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne, women’s basketball standouts Angel Reese and Flau'jae Johnson, and former QB and Heisman winner Jayden Daniels and will be the focus of a new docuseries on Amazon Prime called “The Money Game,” which will showcase the changes at LSU after the advent of NIL. The series is being produced by Campfire Studios, Shaquille O'Neal and Axios. (link)

Two years after an Alabama Board of Trustees committee gave the approval to begin exploring the process of replacing Coleman Coliseum, AL.com’s Michael Casagrande observes that “this hypothetical arena has appeared on exactly zero more meeting agendas. Meanwhile, Coleman needed 17 minutes to get working lights on Wednesday night.” Why? “Look no further than the lapel of Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne’s jacket during the blackout game. It wasn’t the traditional ‘script A’, rather the pennant shaped logo of Yea Alabama, the Crimson Tide’s official NIL collective. When asking what’s changed the most since the conceptual illustrations of this potential new facility went public, here’s your answer. The arms race is a two-front battle – one that now extends beyond the newest and finest facilities. … [The] collection plate is being passed a second time and the priority has clearly been on the Jimmys and Joes over the land movers and backhoes.” More. SBJ’s Bret McCormick sits down with Las Vegas Aces President Nikki Fargas, Seattle Storm co-owner Ginny Gilder and Boston Unity Soccer Partners Controlling Partner Jennifer Epstein about the increased focus on building sports facilities with women in mind, both fans and athletes. Fargas says of the Aces’ new $40M facility that grabbed headlines last year: “There were a lot of conversations with the players to dive into what was sacred to them. What was your routine? Making it accessible and safe for them to come in and out of the facility, so they have access to the facility if they want to be there at 10 at night. Even creating where they park, how they enter the building, having 24-hour security services available for them. ... And to have an owner like Mark Davis – it's great to have men who are allies, who understand. ... For us to have their story told through the process of designing this facility is special.” Gilder notes that the Storm started as an affiliated franchise, “but I think one of the reasons, frankly, that we were interested in buying the team was we didn't want to be the tail on the dog. … It's a very different ballgame, being an independent team. There are advantages and disadvantages. Obviously, NBA owners have really good facilities. They control, for the most part, their arenas. They can provide what they want to their women's teams. And that's not necessarily the case with an independent, but we have the luxury of only focusing on our business. ... We've been building a business for 16 years, and for us, that's allowed us to really focus on what a women's team needs as opposed to a women's team within a larger context.” More. (link)
