LaKeisha Marsh, chair of Akerman LLP’s collegiate athletic practice, tells On3’s Eric Prisbell there is “definitely pushback” on the trust fund component of Project DI, and one source tells Prisbell that everything is currently on the table. "You could have a model where you have the NCAA as it is right now, but football fully pulls off of that, maybe basketball fully pulls off of that. You could see conferences continue to gain more power. There could be decision making at the conference level that dictates revenue outcomes for athletes sharing in conference-wide revenues." Prisbell, who notes there is particular skepticism among Power 4 leaders, adds: “Here's one big reason why the NCAA needs to placate the power leagues: If a breakaway occurs, the power conferences could also take their basketball and look to stage their own lucrative postseason championship tournament. … Whether the power leagues need the NCAA is an open question. But the NCAA needs the power leagues. On this specific point, one prominent source told On3: ‘It is a very real thing to pay attention to.’” (link)

SBJ’s Bruce Schoenfeld profiles Wake Forest’s across-the-board success despite competing in the NIL era as the smallest Power 5 school. A comparatively small alumni base notwithstanding, Schoenfeld points out that Wake’s donors “rank among the most generous.” Deacs Executive Assoc. AD for Development and Sales Barry Faircloth: “Look at our results. You match them up with anyone in the country in terms of fundraising, and I bet we do very well. In terms of cash out the door? Extremely well.” ISP Sports Founder, industry headliner and Wake alumnus/donor Ben Sutton adds: “There are a lot of schools where somebody giving $5 million to athletics would be the biggest gift in the history of the department. That’s on the low end of our range.” As such, the Demon Deacons are insistent they will continue to compete only on the highest level moving forward, whatever that may look like. VP of Communications/Chief Communications Officer Brett Eaton: “That’s part of the Wake Forest promise, that you get a range of big-time athletics at an intimate place.” President Susan Wente adds: “We’re going to come up with an innovative and creative way to do this. The Wake Forest way.” Meanwhile, AD John Currie says the Demon Deacons are at “the strongest point in our history,” citing several newly renovated facilities and a roster of coaches who are creative enough to stay competitive. He also notes that even before NIL, maintaining a sustainable program at Wake has been a challenge and is confident the school will retain its “place at the table,” noting: “This is just a different kind of threat. … We’ve got this. If the music stops, so to speak, we’ve got a chair.” Lots more. (link)

FAU sold out its first eight men’s basketball home games and has been forced to turn away students at the door amid surging interest. Owls Deputy AD for Brand and Communications Mike DeGeorge tells The Palm Beach Post’s Marc Berman that it’s a “great problem to have. It’s the first time at Florida Atlantic we’ve experienced something like this. It’s not an exact science. We keep the line, and it’s one in, one out." Students can enter for free as long as they claim their ticket online the day before, and Berman notes there have been as many as 1,100 claims for a game — more than the 750 seats allotted for the student section. DeGeorge notes that a claim “doesn’t guarantee a seat. You still have to stay in line." Interest has also stretched beyond campus, with Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler and Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov taking in games this season. The increase in demand has resulted in a corresponding uptick in season ticket prices, which for a courtside seat went up from $1,250 to $3K this season. Courtside season ticket holder Richard Staller says it was time for prices to increase anyway. “They wanted Dusty (May) to stay so they had an increase of over a million dollars. … It shows everyone wants to see a winner.” (link)

A Los Angeles Times article written over the weekend by Chuck Schilken appeared to suggest Loyola Marymount’s decision to discontinue six sports may have been motivated by NIL. In fact, Lions AD Craig Pintens’ mention of NIL was in response to this direct question: “NIL and the transfer portal are mentioned as part of the changing landscape that led to these cuts. Can you explain how NIL and the transfer portal have specifically affected LMU athletics and how these cuts will help in that area?” Pintens did not cite NIL as a reason for the cuts in his response but rather as an example of the aforementioned changing landscape. The L.A. Times has since changed the headline of their article from “LMU cuts six sports, citing NIL” to “Loyola Marymount to “Loyola Marymount to cut 6 sports. These are the teams affected.” (link - LMU microsite on decision, link - Loyolan article)

The department’s expenses also included $5M in severance payments. Nebraska Interim President Chris Kabourek believes AAU membership will play a pivotal role in the Huskers’ long-term fate as it relates to the Big Ten and says: “There’s no guarantee that Nebraska will have a seat in the Big Ten. So we have to make sure we look like our peers.” When the four incoming Pac-12 schools join the league in July, 17 of the Big Ten’s 18 teams will be AAU members with Nebraska being the only outlier, and Kabourek notes that “from the presidents’ perspective, when I walk into meetings with the presidents and chancellors, it makes you a little apprehensive in terms of we don’t look quite like the others. … We have the hammer down now to make sure we’re not only on the upswing in athletics but also on the academics side as well. This is about our public declaration to go compete against the best. That’s why we’re doing some of this re-imaging and budget-cutting. We have to have some smart conversations. If those things are not contributing to our goal, we need to stop doing them.” (link)

Lincoln Parish Journal columnist Doug Strickel shares his thoughts on what Louisiana Tech should prioritize in its AD search and beyond, starting with clarifying an identity: “Tech is a smaller Division I program with a budget below most other division one schools. Those facts are not going to change overnight regardless of the level of fundraising efforts employed. We need to seriously consider working with others in similar situations as well as with Conference USA and the Sun Belt to realign these conferences to be more geographically focused. Travel spending must be reduced, and athletes need to be in class as much as possible. … Rather than use the lack of budgetary resources as an excuse and be a victim going forward, we need to embrace the identity at all levels. We need leaders that can narrow the focus on where to best utilize resources, coaches that embrace the challenge with staffing considerations, and an athletic department that is willing to be different. A department that still values education, student/athlete development, teambuilding, and overall culture creation will be unique in the future.” Strickel also notes it is increasingly important to engage the community: “We need all aspects of the business community and private sector to feel like part of the program. Athletic and University leadership needs to think more inclusivity than exclusivity as we move forward in a changing environment.” Lots more. (link)

We are always looking for opportunities to enhance our onboarding process and D1.relocation will be a tremendous resource for coaches and staff with their transition.” (link)

Chattanooga’s Mocs Club has launched All Aboard: The Drive for UTC Women's Athletics. If the campaign can secure $100K in support, a donor has pledged to donate a matching $100K. The campaign also encourages individuals to sign up to be a part of the UTC mentorship program for female student-athletes. Mocs AD Mark Wharton: “This is an important initiative. Women's sports have grown exponentially in every facet over the years. It's vital we cultivate this and take advantage of this opportunity. All Aboard: The Drive for UTC Women's Athletics is a great step towards achieving this goal and taking major strides both in our region and nationally.” (link)

NewsGuild, the union representing Sports Illustrated staff, has filed an unfair labor practice grievance with the NLRB alleging that Arena Group terminated employees because of their “support of the Union engagement in Union activities and/or engagement in other protected activities,” the Washington Post’s Ben Strauss reports. In a statement, the guild said managers and supervisors who are not eligible for the union were not targeted by the layoffs. The statement also notes a staffer who has an unresolved labor grievance against the company as well as a union officer were among those let go immediately. NewsGuild of New York President Susan DeCarava: “It’s clear that the Arena Group ownership is using an engineered dispute over the SI license as a cover to union-bust and unlawfully target our members. Filing an Unfair Labor Practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board is just the first step, as we continue to explore all options for our membership.” Former Arena CEO Ross Levinsohn wrote to the company’s board of directors on the day he quit that “today’s obliteration of Sports Illustrated’s storied newsroom and the union busting tactics is the last straw. These actions and the inaction of this board are illegal, riddled with self-dealing, and will almost certainly lead to shareholder lawsuits.” (link)
