Chadron State AD Joel Smith will retire after a decade leading the Eagles. Per CSC: "Effective immediately, Associate Athletic Director Ted Tewahade will assume additional supervisory duties. Chadron State College President Ron K. Patterson said he intends to hire an Interim Athletic Director and conduct a national search for Smith's permanent replacement soon." (link)

Kentucky Wesleyan AD Mark Shook recaps his two-year tenure leading the Panthers and lays out what is on the horizon in Owensboro. “Much has happened in a relatively short amount of time that has been built towards creating a transformative student-athlete experience and in building my team of coaches to add to that experience. Quite simply, I am so proud of how far we've come in so many areas in the past 24 months and how many records we've set as a department and as One Team. The best part is, we've only just begun. […] As we look to the future, there is still lots to be done in all areas of our department. Fundraising, facilities, and staffing are at the top of my list. We are preparing plans for our first special impact project for the W club (to be announced in February) that will benefit all of our teams, and quite simply make us bigger, faster, and stronger. Also, we are currently drafting plans for each of our outdoor facilities that will greatly improve the playing surfaces, safety, and longevity for our outdoor sports. These improvements will take significant financial commitments from our alumni, donors, and former athletes. We will also look to corporate sponsorships for naming opportunities to make our goals a reality.” (link) 

INFORUM’s Mike McFeely pens on the rumblings of a Dakota Athletic Conference (NAIA) revival amidst realignment across the footprint and several NAIA members left without a conference as the NSAA is set to fold. “There are about 100 moving parts to re-forming something resembling the old DAC, especially considering some schools are currently NAIA and some are Division II. But make no mistake, there is a stomach for it. […] Helping the momentum is recent legislation from the NCAA that guarantees every Division II conference an automatic bid into postseason championships in every sport except football if the league has 10 members. So a reformed DAC, once postseason-eligible, would get automatic access to Division II national tournaments in men's and women's basketball and all other sports (other than football). […] It's going to take somebody in power in the small colleges in the Dakotas to stand up and publicly force a discussion about this before it really moves forward.” One NSIC source telling McFeely: “Minot State, for sure, and maybe Mary wouldn't mind getting out of the NSIC because they are sick of not being competitive. And everybody is looking at finances and how to save money, so getting those old schools back together would make sense in a lot of ways. Especially travel.” (link)

With the DII legislative change to eliminate exceptions for Olympic sports for the minimum sport sponsorship threshold for championships, Women’s Rowing will likely be the lone sport impacted with 15 programs. The change provides a three-year grace period to reach the 35-team threshold by 2027, with the opportunity for a waiver for sports that fall below that number. Nova Southeastern HC Kim Chavers expects the majority of programs will transition to club status or be cut, with a select few to move up to DI, adding: “The real issue here is that the NCAA is eliminating 400 opportunities for women with no plan to replace them elsewhere.” (link)

Pittsburg State will restart its Men’s Golf program in 2024-25 after a decade-long hiatus and begin sponsoring Women’s Golf in 2025-26. Gorillas AD Jim Johnson: "When we made the difficult decision to suspend the men's golf program in 2014, I was confident this day would come. It was simply a matter of time to take all the necessary steps to re-launch the program with the resources for success. Not only are we confident we have accomplished that goal, but we believe we are ready to begin the process to launch a women's program as well.” (link)
