Missouri is the recipient of a $62M gift – the largest in the athletic department’s history – from an anonymous donor, who has designated $50M for the Memorial Stadium Improvements project and $12M for Mizzou’s Tiger Fund. Tigers AD Desiree Reed-Francois: "This extraordinary commitment is a major step toward fulfilling our vision to transform Memorial Stadium and create the best college football game-day atmosphere in the country. Our pivotal stadium project is not possible without our donor, whose passion for Mizzou's success, coupled with humility, faith and generosity, are unparalleled. On3’s Eric Prisbell cites a “prominent source” as saying the SEC and Big Ten’s formation of a joint advisory group is further confirmation the NCAA has "zero juice and that this is all headed toward a super conference model.” The source adds: "Conference leaders don't want their own members going rogue any more than the NCAA does. And the only way to maintain control is to do what the NCAA hasn't been able to do: proactively create a model that will 100% involve sharing revenue with athletes and that Congress will endorse so there can be enforceable rules again.” Another source tells Prisbell: “Given the non-stop judicial threats, the NCAA is no longer in control. The membership can no longer legislate for what it believes is best for the overall enterprise, because if it does not work for one institution or one student-athlete, a lawsuit is filed. This is no way to manage college athletics.” (link)

Meanwhile, Oncoor Marketing President Russell White, who also serves as president of The Collective Association, tells On3’s Pete Nakos the SEC-Big Ten joint advisory group signals a step in the right direction. “The conferences are where so much of the power is, and they’ve given the NCAA opportunities. It’s clear by the announcement Friday that the SEC and Big Ten are just like, ‘OK, maybe we’ll just have to do it ourselves.’ We’ve seen it moving this way. We’re here to work with people. We know the conferences have a lot of the power, and they’re realizing it’s maybe time to step in and do what they do.” White also notes the NCAA “has not done themselves any favors over the past couple of years. And look, Charlie Baker inherited a disaster. Mostly it’s frustration. There are so many gray areas that don’t need to be gray. And there are so many things that the NCAA has had opportunity after opportunity to clarify or to realize, ‘Hey, maybe we don’t need to overreach here or maybe we need to let this area develop a bit more into a free market.’ “We’re not against regulations or guidelines. Collectives aren’t. It’s more about are they common sense guidelines? Do they put the needs and the rights and the opportunities of the college athletes first? … A lot of people in this space realize we need guidelines and partnerships with other stakeholders, but it doesn’t have to be overbearing. Honestly, it doesn’t have to be the NCAA.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde analogizes the formation of the SEC-Big Ten joint advisory group to a “test rocket fired into the atmosphere. It’s a show of strength and a warning signal to the rest of college athletics. A Power 2 move away from everyone else remains an existential threat. Only a fool would underestimate the lust for power and dollars that exists in the industry, and those who have the most of both certainly want more. … Between that, the NCAA’s crisis of leadership and the next wave of impending legal ass-kickings,” Forde asserts that “it’s time to get radical. In an effort to save some semblance of a broad-based, national college sports landscape, the time has come to either let football go its own way or make it go its own way. Not just releasing it from NCAA oversight, but kicking football off campus. Divorce football from higher education, while saving the NCAA tournament as a full Division I event.” Under Forde’s proposed model, football players would no longer have to go to school, and coaches would no longer be employed by the universities. “License the logos and nicknames for use by what would now be professional teams; let them rent out the stadiums and facilities; take a cut of the ticket revenue; but otherwise be done with it. … But if there is one thing that everyone should work together to preserve, it’s an all-comers March Madness. If the SEC and Big Ten break away and try to form their own two-conference basketball postseason, history could and would judge them harshly for ruining the best thing in college sports.” More from Forde. Rutgers signed a four-year extension to its naming rights agreement with SHI International last month, according to NJ Advance Media’s Brian Fonseca. The deal locks up naming rights to the Scarlet Knights’ football stadium through June 2029, and SHI has a two-year option to extend the deal through June 2031. The extended agreement will pay Rutgers a total of $11.2M over the next six years, starting at $1.55M in FY24 and increasing by an average of $120K each year before culminating with a $2.15M payout in FY29. If SHI activates its two-year option, it will pay an additional $4.6M — $2.25M in FY30, $2.35M in FY31. Scarlet Knights AD Pat Hobbs: “Our first years together have been, I think, exceptionally good. To extend with them and to have them express the confidence in us that they have, it is wonderful. We’re really looking forward to continue a very, very successful relationship together.” (link)

UCF AD Terry Mohajir talks about the work the Knights are doing to keep pace with their Big 12 peers on the financial ledger and explains that “we are going down parallel tracks and they are equally as important. We've got the facility side, we've got personnel, we've got operating budget, and then we've got recruiting, which is our collective and NIL. And we're behind, we’re competing against schools that have been playing sports since the 1800s. … Last year we showed a new surplus, and you're going to see an NCAA report that comes out this year that shows our expenses exceeded our revenues by $3.5M. And those are things that I think people are going to react to.” Mohajir also notes the Knights are half-share members right now, while the Pac-12 teams coming in will do so with full shares, so the five-year projections are already being diluted. “We also inherited some other operating debt from years past before I got here, and so we've got to pay off a lot of different things, and we're trying to navigate through all that; however, we still are doing outstanding in our fundraising. We've had three years in a row, I believe, [of] fundraising records, ticket sales records. We're going to continue that trajectory, but after a while you're going to run out inventory. So, how do you make up those deficits? Philanthropic dollars, donor dollars. … We're out there, we're talking to a lot of folks, are doing a great job, we just need a wider net. Oregon State reported revenues of $91.58M and expenses of $98.42M for FY23, eclipsing the school’s previous all-time highs in both categories. OSU spent $36.17M on coaches’ salaries, up from $34.76M in FY22. The next highest expense was student aid ($11.35M), followed by facilities maintenance and overhead ($10.28M). Football finished with a surplus was $16.51M, while men’s basketball’s profit was $754K. Women’s basketball finished with the biggest deficit at $3.18M. Football generated $21.61M in media rights while MBB brought in $5.3M. OSU also received $10.82M from the Pac-12 in non-media rights, most of it related to football. Temple Executive Senior Assoc. AD AD Derek Horne sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to reflect on the changing industry, share insight on navigating presidential transitions and discuss the strategic planning process. Horne has observed an evolution in the industry that included Title IX and equity considerations, a facilities arms race and an escalation of fundraising. He explains how those experiences informed his thinking as AD at Florida A&M and Alcorn State, noting that despite the disparity in resources across DI institutions, all athletics leaders are tasked with leveraging their resources to support student-athlete success and wellbeing. Having gone through two presidential transitions as an AD, Horne says he gives current Owls AD Arthur Johnson the following advice to navigate Temple’s own leadership change: “Do your job. Stay consistent. Make sure people know what you're doing. And remain relevant. I think Arthur does an awesome job with that because he’s an excellent communicator. But he also makes sure that what he does, the board and the president, they're both well-informed. And when you do those things, even if you make a mistake, as long as they know that you're doing your best to represent the institution, you’ll survive, and you'll be fine.” Lots more in the full chat on ADU. The Athletic’s Ari Wasserman talks with 10 football recruiting staffers from Power 5 schools to gauge what rules they believe should be changed. One says: “The NCAA has worked to make changes over the last few years, but they are small changes that have ripple effects on the entire calendar. It’s time to blow it all up and start over. And when they do so, please have personnel guys in these meetings, people that are in the thick of it and are affected by these changes in their everyday work lives. It’s 2024 and the NCAA still won’t acknowledge the fact that college football and personnel has changed. Give us a seat at the table to provide input, and valuable input at that.” One unanimous conclusion was that the early signing period simply isn’t viable during such a busy time; however, Wasserman notes that opinions on fixing the issue differ. One staffer suggests: “To me, you let the kid sign when he commits. It protects the kid and it holds the team accountable that you can’t switch up when the roster shifts. You need to manage your roster better. It’s not fair to the high school kids to make them wait and then your needs change based on what happens with your current roster.” While pressuring recruits to sign on the spot is suboptimal, Wasserman notes doing so would at least “help curtail non-committable offers, commitment flips and last-second NIL deals that blow up recruiting classes.” Other suggestions include allowing recruiting staffers to travel, eliminating the one-mile rule on official visits, and making the dead periods dead. St. John’s Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino expresses concern for the program’s future in the current landscape: “It’s our first year. Every first year I’ve had, I’ve never had a great team. But I will tell you, I am worried about it. It’s very tough to build. So many football coaches are getting out, so many basketball coaches are getting out. It’s tough to build a program. You have to really innovate, get creative and understand these rules right now — or lack of rules. … It’s a very difficult time in college basketball because it’s free agency and now I think what’s going to happen is [the NCAA is] going to say everybody can transfer. If they don’t like it, they’re going to take them to court. I think the NCAA enforcement staff should be disbanded, not because I dislike them, but they’re of no value at all.” (link)

Two-thirds of the nearly 6,000 prepaid, reloadable University Fancards provided to college bowl game participants were redeemed in the games’ respective host markets, per SBJ’s David Broughton, who notes the “game-branded Mastercard gift cards, each with a value of up to $475” were included in the gift packages for seven bowl games. Additionally, the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl and CFP national championship game provided Fancards to the guests of the game’s participants that could be used for concessions payments. “Several bowl committees purchased additional cards to provide to VIPs, their staff and others, leading to a roughly 12% increase in card distribution than what Fancards had initially projected a few weeks before bowl season began. … Nearly 25% of the total spend with the cards has been at restaurants, with another 11% each on groceries and gas.” (link)

Higher ed institutions are adjusting their financial aid timelines in response to the latest FAFSA delay. Oregon State, for instance, has pushed the traditional May 1 deadline back to June 1, and OSU VP of Enrollment Management Jon Boeckenstedt says the delay is reminiscent of COVID in terms of its disruption to the admissions process. “We had two options: we could either stick to our May 1 deadline and deal with thousands of individual requests for flexibility, or we could get out ahead of this and live with the ramifications. … If [the Department of Education (ED)] pulls through and submits the FAFSA info early, by mid-February, say, then we might regret this decision from a planning perspective. But we’re doing this from the standpoint of what’s best for our students, not what’s best for OSU. And we’ll never really regret doing what’s best for students.” That said, he notes there is “no reason to be confident” the ED will meet even its mid-March deadline. “It’s not about when the [Institutional Student Information Records] start coming in; it’s about when we get a critical mass. Knowing that the tentative date to start sending batches—not all the information, just batches—is mid-March doesn’t do much to reassure.” (link)

Former Gators AD Jeremy Foley: "Bill Carr was a wonderful man and a great Gator. I am very saddened by his passing and wish to send my condolences to his entire family. Bill's fingerprints are all over the foundation of this program.” Carr, who after his stints as an AD was a pioneer in creating the management consulting & executive search verticals in college athletics alongside former Southern Miss AD Richard Giannini, is survived by his wife Janice & five children, including FIU AD Scott Carr. On a personal note, I am so fortunate to have known Bill. His enthusiasm for others was unmatched. Incredibly selfless, caring & always interested in what was around the corner for both my family & college athletics. He was an amazing man & will be dearly missed. (link)

February will be a busy month for AD hires, according to CollegeAD, which reports Tarleton will likely be the first to wrap up after the Texans interviewed three finalists last week. A new AD is expected to be named this week. Louisiana Tech, as reported, will begin virtual interviews next week, as will San Diego, which expects to have finalists visit for on-campus interviews beginning February 19. Meanwhile, American will begin virtual interviews on February 19, with in-person interviews to follow. Also, Little Rock is expected to have its new AD in place by April. (link)

Asked whether he is committed to the College Football Playoff in 2025 and beyond, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “Yep, but we’ve got a lot to get right. The commitment is we want to see this get right.” Dellenger notes that Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti “each expressed frustration over challenges and delays on the 12-team format as well as the unsettled revenue-distribution model after 2025,” with Sankey remarking: “We have the reality of meeting to deal with CFP governance with the 2026 season and beyond. That’s a highly important issue.” Petitti adds: “I’m new to [CFP] meetings. How these things develop, there have been some surprises. The focus on what this is going to look like beyond 2026 is highly important and deserves a lot of time and discussion.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham sits down with Teamworks Vice President for Business Development Kevin Barefoot for the second in a series of conversations offering forward-looking solutions to the most pressing issues in today’s college athletics landscape. Cunningham and Barefoot discuss the trickle-down ramifications of high level changes, such as NIL and the transfer portal, on department resources, donor fatigue and Olympic sport programs. They also unpack the Project DI framework, particularly as it relates to schools participating in NIL and increasing educational benefits. Cunningham cautions that one consequence of expanding the educational benefits pool involves further fatiguing donors. “I feel like athletic directors and coaches and everybody's been crying wolf for 25 years that, ‘Oh my gosh, we can't do that, we can't afford to do that,’ yet the commercial activity continues to rise. Salaries continue to rise, facilities continue to get built, but I do think that we have recognized in the last couple of years, since the advent of NIL, that our donors are fatigued – the people that support intercollegiate athletics are tired. And so if we continue to add expenses or add benefits to those that participate without some restriction on costs, whether that's facility cost, salary costs, whatever it is, we have to take a look at that because…at some point this will level off and we'll have to make some decisions. We saw some of those decisions being made during COVID. You never saw anybody cutting back in football and basketball in COVID, but I did see the Olympics sports drop during COVID, and that was concerning to me.” Lots more from Cunningham on AthleticDirectorU. The NCAA has responded to the TRO request made by the AGs of Tennessee and Virginia, in which it claims that lifting pay-for-play rules “would have negative implications reaching far beyond the use of NIL negotiations in collegiate athletic recruitment.” More specifically, the NCAA warns an injunction would “expose” recruits, some of whom are minors, “to bad actors who cajole” them “into entering coercive contracts” and lead to recruits feeling “overwhelm[ed]” with solicitations. Sportico’s Michael McCann goes on to point out that the “NCAA contends the AGs…are attacking the same rules that have been scrutinized through evidence and testimony since 2020, when [House v. NCAA litigation] began. As the NCAA sees it, the AGs ‘offer no evidence or argument for why they need injunctive relief on an even faster basis, or why money damages—the traditional remedy—would fail to adequately redress the injuries they claim.’” The NCAA also argues, per McCann, that it is “hypocritical for UT to use Tennessee to demand pay-for-play rules be lifted when it is a member of a conference defending those same rules in [House v. The attorneys general from Tennessee and Virginia subsequently responded to the NCAA’s arguments, writing: “It’s not Plaintiffs’ fault that the NCAA has decided to regulate NIL and recruitment through a byzantine set of overlapping rules of guidance. To the extent there’s confusion on which rules the NCAA thinks give it the power to enforce the NIL-recruiting ban, that problem is one of the NCAA’s own creation. The NCAA cannot benefit from the fact that its rules – scattered across a 437-page manual – are often impenetrable, shifting, and vague. … The NIL-recruiting ban injures athletes, in both Virginia and Tennessee, by artificially deflating their value in the marketplace. And athletes who get even close to the line, whether that line is drawn by the NCAA now or later, could have their eligibility taken away or their school competitively sanctioned. Either would further impact their NIL opportunities for the remainder of their brief opportunity to participate in college athletics.” More from the AGs. (link); Tennessee AG Jonathan Skrmetti on Fox News yesterday: “I think federal regulation is the only answer to the federal antitrust legal problem, but what we have right now is already the wild west, but it's the wild west with arbitrary enforcement and that's really hurting these student athletes especially when they're unlucky enough to be in a school that gets in the crosshairs.” On the Title IX implications of NIL, Skrmetti notes NIL “is not something the university is giving the students, it's an inherent right that they have. It’s an intellectual property right in their name, their image, and their likeness, and the law is they retain that right whether they're playing for the school or not. So, this is a matter of a school interfering with their property rights in a way that suppressing their compensation Title IX can be kept completely separate from that because that is run through the universities.” (link)

Kansas is working on solutions to get students to home football games at Children’s Mercy Park and Arrowhead Stadium next season. Jayhawks AD Travis Goff notes KU is putting together a “comprehensive plan that will include running as many buses as possible,” and Deputy AD for External Affairs and Revenue Generation Jason Booker adds the department is looking at possibly adding “discounted to free” parking and transportation options for students. For those who can’t attend the games, KU plans to host watch parties in Lawrence, per Booker, who says: “I think it’s really important that we’re listening to our community here in Lawrence, and that’s why it’s important for us to have representation in those boards.” Exactly how much the Jayhawks will pay to use Children’s Mercy Park and Arrowhead Stadium has yet to be determined. ESPN’s Outside the Lines zeroes in on the meteoric rise of sports gambling since 2018, during which time advertising spend on the industry has increased from $22.9M per year to $360M per year as the number of states to legalize sports betting has increased from four to 40. U.S. Congressman Paul Tonko (D-NY) would like to explore a prohibition on advertising aimed at more vulnerable populations, much like the limits that have been placed on the tobacco industry. “I think we need to take a closer look at this because it could be a public health crisis that grows in tremendous dimension.” American Gaming Association President/CEO Bill Miller disagrees that gambling poses a type of public health crisis. “I think that we are facing is a migration of the American sports bettor who had no legal opportunities to bet on sports into the safe regulated marketplace.” (link)

In a 60 Minutes piece on sports gambling last night, gambling addiction therapist Harry Levant says some of his patients are college students who have gambled away their federal student loan money. "I have patients who gamble in the shower. I have patients who gamble before they get out of bed in the morning. I have patients who gamble while they are driving. There are no guardrails.” Levant has partnered with Northeastern law professors Dick Daynard and Mark Gottlieb, who are preparing to take on the gambling industry in court. Daynard, one of the architects of the first major lawsuits against tobacco companies, says of the similarities between the gambling and tobacco industries: “We’re dealing with addictive products. We're dealing with an industry that will still defend itself sometimes on the basis that it's really the smoker who's making the choice. We have that exactly with a gambling industry.” The group in December filed lawsuits against DraftKings for deceptive advertising and is calling on Congress to control the way gambling products are promoted. Meadowlark Media CEO/former ESPN President John Skipper believes the Super Bowl will be streaming-only within eight years, before the league’s media rights deal concludes in 2032. “I would have thought that pay-per-view for the Super Bowl would be on the outside of that deal. I now think in the life of the deal, the Super Bowl will go pay-per-view.” Asked to explain whether he means the game will be pay-per-view or behind a streamer’s paywall, Skipper explains: “Depending on who owns the Super Bowl, it would be more or less valuable to put it behind a paywall and get subscribers. After you have the consolidation of streaming services and big broadcast companies, that’s when it will actually go pay-per-view I think. So you’re looking at three-to-four years.” (link)
