Washington & Lee Assoc. AD/Women’s Basketball Committee Chair Bethany Dannelly and Rochester Men’s Basketball HC/MBB Committee Chair Luke Flockerzi join Hoopsville’s Dave McHugh to dive into the selection process, per diem, and tons more. Notable from Flockerzi on the work of the national committee versus regional advisory committees and Pool C bids: “All regions aren't equal and so that's our job as a national committee is to apply the criteria in an equitable way across all 10 regions. Honestly, sometimes RAC members get frustrated because they don't understand what we're doing on the national level. It's not that we don't appreciate their work and that their work is not important, it's that we need to handle this circumstance in this region the same as we're doing it over here. Now, same does not mean equal because the regions aren't equal. […] In my opinion, we do not have all right, equal access to pool Cs. And so is that the intent of division three leadership, or is that just a byproduct? […] There are inherent advantages and disadvantages to the Division III landscape, and no one would disagree with that. And so is the goal to make the pool C process completely equitable? That is up for debate and anyone can have their opinion on that, but that's kind of where we are on with the conversation.” Dannelly on per diem: “The per diem is sufficient for certain sites. For other sites, it is a major challenge. Through some different avenues, I've actually learned that at the Division I level, they have a high cost city per diem. At DII and DIII, they do not have that same infrastructure and I don't think that same infrastructure is coming to Division II or III. […] One thing that I think is going to continue to be a major challenge at our level and I think this is a reason people sometimes don't put in bids to host is securing hotels. You go to some sites and they require two nights in the hotel, regardless of whether you win or lose. […] I think the hotel situation is going to continue to be a challenge. One for people putting in bids, two just figuring out those logistics and then costs. + The NLRB Regional Director in Region 1 has found that Dartmouth (DI) Men's Basketball student-athletes are employees, stating: “Because Dartmouth has the right to control the work performed by the Dartmouth men’s basketball team, and the players perform that work in exchange for compensation, I find that the petitioned-for basketball players are employees within the meaning of the [National Labor Relations] Act.” (link, link)

+ USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz via X: “Lawyers for plaintiffs in Chuba Hubbard antitrust lawsuit against NCAA and major conferences that pertains to Alston academic achievement awards have filed motion that seeks to give the case class-action status. [...] The plaintiffs’ case is being led by attorneys Steve Berman and Jeff Kessler, who also led Alston case and are leading the pending House case that has been granted class-action status for damages claims that could be worth billions. [...] Filing states that plaintiffs’ economics expert “preliminarily estimates” that $313 million in damages should be awarded to athletes this case seeks to cover. Under antitrust law, if awarded at trial, this amount would be tripled — so nearly $1 billion potentially at stake here.” (link)

Higher ed institutions are adjusting their financial aid timelines in response to the latest FAFSA delay. Kalamazoo, Lewis & Clark and Monmouth, for instance, have pushed the traditional May 1 deadline back to June 1, and Oregon State (DI) VP of Enrollment Management Jon Boeckenstedt says the delay is reminiscent of COVID in terms of its disruption to the admissions process. “We had two options: we could either stick to our May 1 deadline and deal with thousands of individual requests for flexibility, or we could get out ahead of this and live with the ramifications. … If [the Department of Education (ED)] pulls through and submits the FAFSA info early, by mid-February, say, then we might regret this decision from a planning perspective. But we’re doing this from the standpoint of what’s best for our students, not what’s best for OSU. And we’ll never really regret doing what’s best for students.” That said, he notes there is “no reason to be confident” the ED will meet even its mid-March deadline. “It’s not about when the [Institutional Student Information Records] start coming in; it’s about when we get a critical mass. Knowing that the tentative date to start sending batches—not all the information, just batches—is mid-March doesn’t do much to reassure.” (link)
