The new deal brings Coyle’s salary to $1.4M each year. If the university terminates the contract on or before June 30, 2028, it will owe Coyle 100% of the base salary through the full term of the contract. Should Coyle terminate the contract on or before June 30, 2026, he will pay 100% of the base salary through the full term of the agreement. If Coyle terminates between July 1, 2026, and June 30, 2028, he will pay the university $1M. There is no buyout fee after that date. Coyle will continue to receive supplemental retirement contributions of $150,000 with increases of $5,000 each year. (link)

Southeastern Louisiana AD Jay Artigues has agreed to a new four-year contract with the university. President William Wainwright: "Jay Artigues has demonstrated a proven record of accomplishment in advancing the prominence of Southeastern Athletics, support of coaches and staff and most importantly success of our student-athletes. A respected and experienced leader within the Southland Conference, Jay has and will continue to develop talent and ensure progressive growth of both the conference and our university." (link)

The Big Ten and SEC have formed a joint advisory group of presidents, chancellors, and ADs to address the significant challenges facing college athletics. In a joint release, the leagues note the advisory group will “engage with other constituencies as necessary, including consultation with student-athletes and other key leadership groups from within both conferences.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey: "There are similar cultural and social impacts on our student-athletes, our institutions, and our communities because of the new collegiate athletics environment. We do not have predetermined answers to the myriad questions facing us. We do not expect to agree on everything but enhancing interaction between our conferences will help to focus efforts on common sense solutions." (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger points out Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Pettiti “both strongly rebuke any notion that the creation of this advisory board is a move toward a breakaway from the college sports’ governing body. The Big Ten and SEC remain prominent members of the NCAA, both in governance and national competition, they say. Sankey says the group has “no motivation to simply declare” anything, adding: “From our perspective, we have a lot that is linked to the NCAA. We want to see a healthy national organization. I think that’s very much a need.” Sankey also explains he was asked by administrators during last month’s NCAA Convention: “‘When are you and the Big Ten going to tell us what you want?’ That was a motivating factor.” As for whether the advisory group might expand in the future, Sankey says: “We can start it together and I think it can populate itself outward and we can draw people in and work in larger rooms…but having been in a lot of larger rooms, we haven’t seemed to make a lot of progress with bigger numbers.” More from Dellenger. Mecklenburg County (NC) Chief Business Court Judge Louis Bledsoe has ruled that as a “designated party,” ESPN must be presented with a copy of the ACC’s Amended Motion to Seal its agreements with the conference before Bledsoe decides whether to grant the motion. Bledsoe has ordered the ACC to provide ESPN with a certificate of service by no later than February 8. The court will defer a further ruling until ESPN weighs in. ESPN has 20 days after being served with the motion to file a brief in support of the ACC’s motion. The agreements will remain sealed until then. (link)

Tennessee football student-athlete Jackson Lampley has filed a declaration supporting the states of Tennessee and Virginia in their lawsuit against the NCAA. On3’s Pete Nakos reports Lampley’s declaration outlines how NIL plays a role in the decisions of recruits and has helped college athletes. In it, he says: “The signing of the LOI signals the end of the recruiting process. Once the LOI is executed, competing schools are forbidden from contacting that recruit. While many athletes provide non-binding ‘verbal’ commitments to a school prior to signing the LOI, that does not necessarily signal the end of the recruitment process. Recruits still have the power to reconsider their commitment, and some recruits make it clear that they are still willing to hear from other schools, thus potentially shopping one opportunity against another. … Almost every recruit I meet with asks first and foremost about NIL. But they also ask about all the same factors I considered in the pre-NIL world. Just like finances are a factor for every other college student’s decision for where to enroll, how much weight a recruit puts on financial costs and opportunities ought to be up to them, as simply part of finding the right fit for a given athlete’s circumstances. In my observation, NIL has become one of the top factors that current recruits consider when determining where to go to school.” (link)

USA Today’s Josh Peter and Tom Schad examine how Lincoln University (CA) and others like it exist as “countable opponents” for DI football programs despite having no official ties to a governing body. They note the Oaklanders have played 14 games against FCS teams over the past three years – “a series of lopsided losses that have helped keep their threadbare program alive.” Under rules revised by the NCAA in 2015, the pool of countable opponents includes the 333 schools in the NAIA and NCCAA, as well as about 100 others who meet baseline academic requirements. Peter and Schad note Lincoln has at least five athletic programs, including a men’s basketball team that is coached by NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton, and “it is unclear if Lincoln’s athletic department follows the gender equity provisions of Title IX, because…Lincoln is not subject to the act because it is currently not eligible to participate in federal financial aid programs for students.” Many current and former Oaklander student-athletes tell Peter and Schad they chose Lincoln specifically for the opportunity to compete against DI competition. Football student-athlete Steven Earnest: “I’m pretty sure the schedule is what got everyone here. The only thing is I don’t really know how they get the schedule, because you saw, we get smoked every game.” Stephen F. Austin is one of the DI teams who has scheduled Lincoln, and Lumberjacks AD Ryan Ivey notes: “When you’ve got to fill games, you’ve got to fill games. …The challenge with football scheduling is these games are scheduled years in advance. We needed to fill a game so we were able to fill it with them.” More. (link)

Nevada Sports Net’s Chris Murray takes a look at Nevada’s level of university support compared to the rest of the Mountain West as UNR’s contribution to athletics accelerated by $10M in FY23, as campus leaders had previously promised. In pure university support the Wolf Pack’s FY23 numbers are nearly dead even with FY22 average & median from the rest of the league. In terms of percentage subsidized, Nevada’s FY23 puts it at 48.8% where the league average is 46.3% & median sits at 43.0%. More. (link)

Seven of Clemson’s 10 on-field Football assistants now earn at least $900K after the Tigers awarded multiple raises. DC Wes Goodwin receives the biggest bump, as his salary will increase by 65% to $1.4M, while OL AC Matt Luke’s pay will increase from $450K to $975K. Football Scoop’s Zach Barnett notes that seven of HC Dabo Swinney's eight returning ACs netted raises of at least $100K, bringing the salaries of all 10 on-field ACs to over $500K. Tigers AHC Nick Eason’s $200K raise brings his salary to $1M. Only OC Garrett Riley’s salary ($1.75M) remains unchanged. Overall, the AC salary pool will increase 28% over last year. The raises were approved today by the Clemson Board of Trustees. During the meeting, Tigers AD Graham Neff informed the board that the gymnastics program, which is in its inaugural season, has officially sold out all three of its home meets so far this season. "It's a show." (link, link)

RealResponse observes that the “threats to student-athlete wellness are, undeniably, intensifying. [...] The rates of reported mental health concerns noted in the 2022 NCAA Student-Athlete Well-Being Study were 1.5 to 2 times higher than have been historically reported prior to 2020. Concerningly, the same NCAA research found that only half of student-athletes believe mental health is a priority to their athletics department.” As such, the company calls on departments to do more than make incremental changes while paying particular attention to hazing and legalized gambling. Georgetown Chief Medical Officer Chad Asplund: “The responsibilities of student-athletes today don’t start with practice and end once the game clock runs out. The traditional ‘offseason’ gets shorter every year. Social media creates an always-on, but not always positive, feedback loop. All of this leaves athletes with even less time to decompress and focus on self-care.” (link)

Two more lawsuits have been filed against the NCAA. Rutgers men’s basketball student-athlete Jeremiah Williams, who transferred from Iowa State this offseason but has remained in “eligibility limbo as he awaits a ruling after violating the NCAA’s gambling policy, filed a lawsuit against the NCAA on Thursday seeking an injunction to become immediately eligible in time for Saturday’s game against Michigan,” according to NJ.com’s Brian Fonseca. According to the complaint, the NCAA suspended Williams for 15 games on January 31, and attorneys for Williams argue Williams “has already served his 15-game sports-wagering suspension in anticipation of that announcement.” Williams has sat out all 20 games the Scarlet Knights have played this season. The NCAA is arguing that “because its now-unenforceable transfer rule was in effect during the first nine games of the season: (a) those nine games do not count against his sports-wagering suspension; (b) Plaintiff must therefore serve his entire sports-wagering suspension based on games played after December 13, 2023, rather than receive credit for the nine games he sat out before that date; and (c) Plaintiff is therefore not eligible to play beginning with Saturday’s game and will not be eligible to play for Rutgers until February 18, 2024.” (link); Additionally, Manhattan MBB student-athlete DeJuan Clayton, who transferred from Cal, is seeking another year of eligibility on a medical hardship waiver. The complaint also contends Clayton “was forced to endure harsh and egregious treatment” from the Cal coaching staff. (link)

Seminole Boosters President & CEO Stephen Ponder joins the Warchant Town Hall to discuss the renovations to the west side of Doak Campbell Stadium. Ponder says FSU has spoken with 1,750 of 3,000 season ticket holders in the top three “zones” according to the points priority system about how the renovations will impact the pricing and their seating placement and notes that 16% of the season ticket holders on the stadium’s west side account for 40% of the season tickets. “For 2024, we will have a reduced capacity…and everyone who was a season ticket holder in 2023 will have a seat in 2024. We're going to have about 7,000 temporary seats on that west side. We will start at the field and go up with those temporary seats and then we're going to start construction for 2025 from the back wall of the suites and come down.” Ponder goes on to note that 10% of the stadium’s current capacity is premium seating, and that figure will increase to 13% when the project is completed in 2025. “That group of 13% is funding roughly 80% of the total capital contributions needed, which is 50% of the project. … We needed the revenue piece in order to be able to” improve the stadium for everyone. More from Ponder. (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown continues his look into the tax-exempt uncertainty surrounding collectives and notes that “since 2023, more than 40 NIL collectives have shut down, merged or relaunched under a new name. While some of the consolidation had nothing to do with the IRS, several collectives decided to reclassify or merge with other entities after the memo.” For instance, the Clemson-focused TigerImpact ceased operations at the end of 2023, and Executive Director Bobby Couch explains: “We thought, ‘Hey, this is inevitable,’ and then our lead counsel basically said that you just need to shut it down.” Ohio State-focused Cohesion Foundation Founder Gary Marcinick adds that he stepped away from the collective at least in part because he wasn’t comfortable discussing potential contributions when those contributions may not be tax-deductible for donors in the future. “The IRS ruling kind of put a cloud over it.” Meanwhile, Hail! Impact, which supports Michigan student-athletes, received IRS approval in September, three months after the IRS released its memo, and Brown notes Hail!’s business model is what separates it from others. The collective gives 70% of its charitable gifts to charities and 30% goes toward its operating expenses. Those percentages were initially the other way around, and President Chin Weerappuli explains: “What we realized after the initial conversations with the IRS is that directly giving dollars from the nonprofit to student-athletes is what they’re cutting down on. … There were discrepancies in how the payouts were made. The amounts were not considered reasonable or market rate, and so that’s what the IRS was really trying to snuff out.” More. (link)

The Summit League unveils its new On the Rise strategic plan built on the following five strategic priorities: enrich student-athlete opportunity and experience; elevate league competitive excellence; grow engagement and activation of league diversity, equity and belonging; build the league brand; and enhance membership value. Commissioner Josh Fenton: "College sports is at a critical conjuncture. It is important for NCAA conferences and member institutions to create a model that is aligned with the educational missions of our campuses, focused on the experiences and well-being of our student-athletes, and sustainable to allow for broad-based and equitable opportunities. We are excited to release a new strategic plan with components grounded in these ideals to build a strong Summit League in Division I for years to come." (link)

Texas Tech posted $146.8M in revenue and $136.4M in expenses during FY23. The department’s revenue jumped from $110.3M in FY22 in large part due to a significant uptick in contributions, which increased from $28.75M to $56.25M YoY. Red Raiders Deputy AD/CFO Jonathan Botros indicated FY23 was an outlier, however, in that Tech used contributions received in previous years to pay more short-term debt on facilities projects. For example, it “recognized $7.7M in contributions to pay short-term debt on the Whitacre Center for Athletics Administration, a $9.4M project that started in 2020, and activated $5M in contributions to pay on the new Tech baseball team facility, a $14.5M undertaking,” per the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams. Botros: “Instead of us showing the dollars that came in, let's say three years ago, toward this project, we showed them once we actually paid the commercial paper on them. A lot of that money sat in accounts, and this was something we did on many accounts. The interest rate environment was so positive for us the past several years that it was more advantageous to bring in donations toward facility projects and let that money sit because the interest earnings on it were more than the interest expense on construction. The department had ~$111M in debt in 2015, and Botros says the department will have shrunk that figure to $52M by the end of FY24. (link)

Nevada reported $49.5M in revenue and $49.53M in expenses during FY23. Nevada SportsNet’s Chris Murray notes this marks the third consecutive year the department has received at least $13M in direct institutional support after typically receiving $3M-$3.5M pre-COVID. Murray adds: “FY23's $13.3M in direct institutional support is expected to be the Wolf Pack's new norm moving forward as Nevada has prepared its FY24 budget to land around $50M, athletic director Stephanie Rempe told Nevada Sports Net on Wednesday.” Meanwhile, the Wolf Pack’s FY23 expense total is the most in history and a 9.5% YoY increase. The biggest YoY expense increases came from support staff (from $6.073M to $7.258M) and coaching salaries (from $8.216M to $8.838M). On the revenue side, UNR reported $7.502M in ticket sales, an increase over the previous year's $7.326M. Other major revenue streams aside from direct institutional support include direct state support ($4.836M), donations ($3.592M), the Mountain West media rights distribution ($3.335M) and student fees ($2.867M). + As construction continues on improvements to Booth Memorial Stadium, Kansas Football HC Lance Leipold says the players are excited about the opportunity to play home games at different venues next season, including Arrowhead Stadium. Speaking more broadly, he notes the $300M price tag is indicative of the momentum of the program and desire from donors and adds: “I think we'll hit even far north of [$300M] when the whole project of what's going to be done is completed. And I think it's really going to give us a chance to keep this thing on firm footing and build it for years to come. … What I found out upon my arrival is we’ve got a lot of passionate people that have been starving for some success on the football field, as well as supporting our basketball program and our other sports.
