USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz via X: “Lawyers for plaintiffs in Chuba Hubbard antitrust lawsuit against NCAA and major conferences that pertains to Alston academic achievement awards have filed motion that seeks to give the case class-action status. [...] The plaintiffs’ case is being led by attorneys Steve Berman and Jeff Kessler, who also led Alston case and are leading the pending House case that has been granted class-action status for damages claims that could be worth billions. [...] Filing states that plaintiffs’ economics expert “preliminarily estimates” that $313 million in damages should be awarded to athletes this case seeks to cover. Under antitrust law, if awarded at trial, this amount would be tripled — so nearly $1 billion potentially at stake here.” (link)

Just one day after filing a lawsuit, Rutgers Men’s Basketball student-athlete Jeremiah Williams, a transfer from Iowa State, received a temporary restraining order in his eligibility fight against the NCAA & will be able to play today against Michigan. U.S. District Judge Zahid Quraishi: “The Court has carefully considered the Motion and for the reasons set forth below, the Court will GRANT his request for an ex parte Temporary Restraining Order.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner writes on the future of Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff: “...any attempt to terminate Kliavkoff for cause would assuredly result in a lawsuit and, ultimately, a negotiated settlement. Because all 12 schools must share in liabilities, the difference between paying Kliavkoff his full buyout and a settlement amount would be negligible (on a per-campus basis). It’s likely several hundred thousand dollars per school. Is that worth the effort of taking a hard line and paying more attorney fees? Would the presidents want to deal with the discovery process and any dirty laundry that might surface? We’re skeptical. While there’s clearly a case to be made that Kliavkoff acted against the best interest of the Beavers and Cougars, all 12 schools undoubtedly want the cleanest break possible on as many fronts as possible. They want to move on. Firing Kliavkoff for cause might be emotionally satisfying for fans and campus officials in Pullman and Corvallis, but it doesn’t achieve the goal. In fact, it makes the desired outcome more difficult to achieve.” (link)

Hawaii lands a $1.05M gift from the Edwin & Rie Wong Endowment Fund that will aid student-athletes from the state in their continuing athletic & academic pursuits, including the cost of attending summer school. Rie Wong: “We have been associated with UH Athletics for many years and wouldn't be able to make this donation without the great relationships from Hugh Yoshida, Jim Donovan and Coach June Jones. We are confident the future is bright under AD Craig Angelos and his team and hope this gift will encourage others to support and appreciate Hawaiʻi Athletics like we have.” (link)

Colorado recorded $127M in expenses against $117.1M in revenues for FY23, resulting in a $9.9M deficit. Reasons for the shortfall includes: “CU’s conference distribution came in at roughly $33.1 million, significantly less than budgeted. That was due to the Pac-12 taking a $72 million hit for a decade of overpayments by Comcast to the conference, costing each school $6 million. The 2023 fiscal year also included CU firing head football coach Karl Dorrell – with roughly $8.7 million left on his contract – as well as several assistants from the 2022 staff. In FY23, CU issued $7.32 million in severance payments, only part of which went to Dorrell, who will be paid monthly through December of this year.” Going forward: “The department has an operating budget of roughly $134 million for FY24, boosted by more than $37 million in football ticket sales from last season – a $21 million jump over 2022 – as fans flocked to Folsom Field to see new head coach Deion Sanders’ squad.” More from BuffZone. + Longtime Oklahoma State Women’s Soccer AC Karen Hancock has accepted a full-time role as Senior Assoc. AD/SWA, the latter role she’s held since 2015. OSU AD Chad Weiberg: “While I know Karen will be missed as an assistant coach, I am excited to have her full time with our senior leadership team to help OSU Athletics navigate this increasingly complex time in collegiate sports. The fact that she has been a college athlete and coach will continue to be an invaluable perspective for our leadership team as well as within the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA.” (link)

The camera will follow Clark while she's on offense, while it will feature regular game action when she's on defense or on the bench.” (link)

Boston Herald Columnist Bill Speros: “BetMGM took more than 15,000 wagers involving $200,000 on college player prop bets in Massachusetts, the MA Gaming Commission said Thursday. Wagering on college player props is illegal in the Bay State. The wagers were made through Same Game Parlay plays throughout the college football season and were discovered by the Sports Wagering Division during an audit. They were not self-reported by the operator. The MGC said it will set the matter for an adjudicatory hearing. Penalties could include a fine and/or suspension of BetMGM's mobile license. This would be, by far, the largest non-compliance, illegal wagering instance in the state since betting launched in 2023.” (link)

New Mexico State Men’s Basketball student-athlete Robert Carpenter was suspended indefinitely from all team activities on Friday, after punching Liberty player Shiloh Robinson in the face during the first half of the Aggies vs Flames tilt the night prior. Carpenter took to social media to apologize publicly: “I want to apologize to Shiloh Robinson and to the Liberty basketball program. I also want to apologize to my teammates, and to all of Aggie Nation for my actions on the court last night. That’s not me. That’s not who I am as a person. The new deal brings Coyle’s salary to $1.4M each year. Should Coyle terminate the contract on or before June 30, 2026, he will pay 100% of the base salary through the full term of the agreement. If Coyle terminates between July 1, 2026, and June 30, 2028, he will pay the university $1M. There is no buyout fee after that date. Coyle will continue to receive supplemental retirement contributions of $150,000 with increases of $5,000 each year. (link)

Southeastern Louisiana AD Jay Artigues has agreed to a new four-year contract with the university. President William Wainwright: "Jay Artigues has demonstrated a proven record of accomplishment in advancing the prominence of Southeastern Athletics, support of coaches and staff and most importantly success of our student-athletes. The Big Ten and SEC have formed a joint advisory group of presidents, chancellors, and ADs to address the significant challenges facing college athletics. In a joint release, the leagues note the advisory group will “engage with other constituencies as necessary, including consultation with student-athletes and other key leadership groups from within both conferences.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey: "There are similar cultural and social impacts on our student-athletes, our institutions, and our communities because of the new collegiate athletics environment. We do not have predetermined answers to the myriad questions facing us. We do not expect to agree on everything but enhancing interaction between our conferences will help to focus efforts on common sense solutions." (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger points out Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Pettiti “both strongly rebuke any notion that the creation of this advisory board is a move toward a breakaway from the college sports’ governing body. The Big Ten and SEC remain prominent members of the NCAA, both in governance and national competition, they say. Sankey says the group has “no motivation to simply declare” anything, adding: “From our perspective, we have a lot that is linked to the NCAA. We want to see a healthy national organization. I think that’s very much a need.” Sankey also explains he was asked by administrators during last month’s NCAA Convention: “‘When are you and the Big Ten going to tell us what you want?’ That was a motivating factor.” As for whether the advisory group might expand in the future, Sankey says: “We can start it together and I think it can populate itself outward and we can draw people in and work in larger rooms…but having been in a lot of larger rooms, we haven’t seemed to make a lot of progress with bigger numbers.” More from Dellenger. Mecklenburg County (NC) Chief Business Court Judge Louis Bledsoe has ruled that as a “designated party,” ESPN must be presented with a copy of the ACC’s Amended Motion to Seal its agreements with the conference before Bledsoe decides whether to grant the motion. Bledsoe has ordered the ACC to provide ESPN with a certificate of service by no later than February 8. The court will defer a further ruling until ESPN weighs in. ESPN has 20 days after being served with the motion to file a brief in support of the ACC’s motion. The agreements will remain sealed until then. (link)

Tennessee football student-athlete Jackson Lampley has filed a declaration supporting the states of Tennessee and Virginia in their lawsuit against the NCAA. On3’s Pete Nakos reports Lampley’s declaration outlines how NIL plays a role in the decisions of recruits and has helped college athletes. In it, he says: “The signing of the LOI signals the end of the recruiting process. Once the LOI is executed, competing schools are forbidden from contacting that recruit. While many athletes provide non-binding ‘verbal’ commitments to a school prior to signing the LOI, that does not necessarily signal the end of the recruitment process. Recruits still have the power to reconsider their commitment, and some recruits make it clear that they are still willing to hear from other schools, thus potentially shopping one opportunity against another. … Almost every recruit I meet with asks first and foremost about NIL. But they also ask about all the same factors I considered in the pre-NIL world. Just like finances are a factor for every other college student’s decision for where to enroll, how much weight a recruit puts on financial costs and opportunities ought to be up to them, as simply part of finding the right fit for a given athlete’s circumstances. In my observation, NIL has become one of the top factors that current recruits consider when determining where to go to school.” (link)

USA Today’s Josh Peter and Tom Schad examine how Lincoln University (CA) and others like it exist as “countable opponents” for DI football programs despite having no official ties to a governing body. They note the Oaklanders have played 14 games against FCS teams over the past three years – “a series of lopsided losses that have helped keep their threadbare program alive.” Under rules revised by the NCAA in 2015, the pool of countable opponents includes the 333 schools in the NAIA and NCCAA, as well as about 100 others who meet baseline academic requirements. Peter and Schad note Lincoln has at least five athletic programs, including a men’s basketball team that is coached by NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton, and “it is unclear if Lincoln’s athletic department follows the gender equity provisions of Title IX, because…Lincoln is not subject to the act because it is currently not eligible to participate in federal financial aid programs for students.” Many current and former Oaklander student-athletes tell Peter and Schad they chose Lincoln specifically for the opportunity to compete against DI competition. Football student-athlete Steven Earnest: “I’m pretty sure the schedule is what got everyone here. The only thing is I don’t really know how they get the schedule, because you saw, we get smoked every game.” Stephen F. Austin is one of the DI teams who has scheduled Lincoln, and Lumberjacks AD Ryan Ivey notes: “When you’ve got to fill games, you’ve got to fill games. …The challenge with football scheduling is these games are scheduled years in advance. We needed to fill a game so we were able to fill it with them.” More. (link)

Nevada Sports Net’s Chris Murray takes a look at Nevada’s level of university support compared to the rest of the Mountain West as UNR’s contribution to athletics accelerated by $10M in FY23, as campus leaders had previously promised. In pure university support the Wolf Pack’s FY23 numbers are nearly dead even with FY22 average & median from the rest of the league. In terms of percentage subsidized, Nevada’s FY23 puts it at 48.8% where the league average is 46.3% & median sits at 43.0%. More. (link)

Seven of Clemson’s 10 on-field Football assistants now earn at least $900K after the Tigers awarded multiple raises. DC Wes Goodwin receives the biggest bump, as his salary will increase by 65% to $1.4M, while OL AC Matt Luke’s pay will increase from $450K to $975K. Football Scoop’s Zach Barnett notes that seven of HC Dabo Swinney's eight returning ACs netted raises of at least $100K, bringing the salaries of all 10 on-field ACs to over $500K. Tigers AHC Nick Eason’s $200K raise brings his salary to $1M. Only OC Garrett Riley’s salary ($1.75M) remains unchanged. Overall, the AC salary pool will increase 28% over last year. The raises were approved today by the Clemson Board of Trustees. During the meeting, Tigers AD Graham Neff informed the board that the gymnastics program, which is in its inaugural season, has officially sold out all three of its home meets so far this season. RealResponse observes that the “threats to student-athlete wellness are, undeniably, intensifying. [...] The rates of reported mental health concerns noted in the 2022 NCAA Student-Athlete Well-Being Study were 1.5 to 2 times higher than have been historically reported prior to 2020. Concerningly, the same NCAA research found that only half of student-athletes believe mental health is a priority to their athletics department.” As such, the company calls on departments to do more than make incremental changes while paying particular attention to hazing and legalized gambling. Georgetown Chief Medical Officer Chad Asplund: “The responsibilities of student-athletes today don’t start with practice and end once the game clock runs out. The traditional ‘offseason’ gets shorter every year. Social media creates an always-on, but not always positive, feedback loop. All of this leaves athletes with even less time to decompress and focus on self-care.” (link)

ESPN VP of Research Flora Kelly notes that “midseason and women’s college basketball on ESPN networks is pacing up +45%” while NBC, Fox and Big Ten Network aired their most-watched regular season games ever. “And, 45M Americans have tuned into a game, nearly 7M more than last season at the same point.” (link)
