Michigan AD Warde Manuel has been appointed chair of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee for the 2024 season. The CFP has also announced the appointments of Washington State AD Pat Chun, Baylor AD Mack Rhoades, Virginia AD Carla Williams, Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek, former Arizona State football student-athlete Randall McDaniel and former Toledo/Missouri HC Gary Pinkel to the Management Committee. Additionally, former Nebraska student-athlete Will Shields has agreed to serve an additional year on the management committee. Notably, Williams becomes the first female AD to serve on the panel. The SEC has announced $741M in revenue distribution for 2022-23 up from $721.8M in 2021-22. The total includes $718M distributed directly from the conference office, and an additional $23M retained by universities that participated in 2022-23 football bowl games. Excluding bowl expenses retained by participants, each school receives an average of $51.3M. (link)

More from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey on yesterday’s Paul Finebaum Show, where he discussed the league’s joint advisory group with the Big Ten: “Both conferences have historical participation, historical linkage, historical investment. In the NCAA, we need a healthy national governing body. And to the extent we can contribute to that in any way — that explains more of what our focus will be. … We have a set of pressing issues upon us that merit this type of conversation knowing that we need to draw people in, widen the circle so that we can have an even healthier collegiate athletics environment as we move forward. We don’t have unilateral authority; we do have a leadership responsibility.” That said, Sankey remarked: “Don’t for a moment think that when I read people who say that, ‘Well, Greg Sankey is going to have the answers’ or ‘He’s going to lead us through this’ — that keeps me up at night. That people would think that I somehow have a set of magical answers. There aren’t magical answers…and now we’re being challenged in different ways, whether it’s challenged within our own campus settings, challenged in courts, challenge in state legislatures or challenged in Congress.” (link)

Florida State has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit the ACC filed against it in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, arguing that the ACC lawsuit is "fundamentally flawed" and an improper attempt at "procedural fencing." FSU also cites a "race to the courthouse" to file suit against Florida State first, its failure to secure a two-thirds member vote required by the league constitution to initiate a lawsuit and a failure to show the Florida State board approved the grant of rights as required by Florida law, among other reasons, ESPN’s Andrea Adelson reports. If the court does not dismiss the suit, FSU has asked for a stay on the ACC complaint in favor of the lawsuit it filed against the ACC in Leon County, Florida. It argues "the Florida Action is the broader and more comprehensive action, and the ACC should not be entitled to any first-filing deference as a result of its improper forum-shopping." (link)

Now that Oregon State and Washington State have mostly ironed out their plans for the next two seasons, the focus can turn to long-term strategy, and Beavers AD Scott Barnes tells The Athletic’s Chris Vannini: “Priority one is to join an existing power conference. Option two is to build back a power conference with the Pac-12 banner. An option might be what we call a reverse merger that might include adding existing Mountain West and the like. But that all needs to be developed over the next several months while keeping an eye on the landscape.” Vannini, however, notes the schools’ agreement with the Mountain West is “a lot more than simply a few football games in exchange for $14M.” Specifically, the contract states the schools will “negotiate in good faith the consummation, as promptly as reasonably practicable, of a definitive transaction pursuant to which all MWC Member Institutions join Pac-12 as Pac-12 member institutions with no MWC Exit Fee payable by any MWC Member Institution to MWC. The invitations, if made, would be effective as of the 2025-2026 NCAA season or the 2026-2027 NCAA season.” Vannini adds: “What really protects the Mountain West is that the obligations of the contract survive for two years past the end date of the agreement, which is currently Aug. 1, 2025 but could be extended to 2026. OSU and WSU face penalties if they were to join a conference other than the Mountain West or a Power 4 league during that time.” Cougars AD Pat Chun on a full merger with the MWC: “I would only read into it as an option. We want to go through every foreseeable option for both schools.” (link)

The ACC has released its list of neutral site championships to be played in North Carolina through 2030. The list accounts for 14 of the league’s 28 sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, women’s golf, gymnastics, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, rowing, and men’s and women’s tennis. Big Ten officials will meet on February 19-20 to discuss and potentially finalize scheduling for fall Olympic sports, and The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman notes: “With different priorities guiding each sport, scheduling ideas have ranged from true rotations to regional preference to even some sports on the same campus traveling together to save costs. Iowa AD Beth Goetz: “In terms of some of the efficiencies, I don’t think that has been discussed as much because you’re talking about principles right now and not dates. So if you’re going to figure out if there can be shared travel, you’re going to have to have the actual schedule in front of you to do that.” In addition to costs – Dochterman reports Big Ten public schools spent between $7.6M and $16.5M on travel during FY23 – logistics and travel time continue to be concerns. Softball, for instance, presents a unique challenge, as teams currently play seven three-game weekend series and one two-game midweek series. In 2025, Dochterman posits it’s likely the sport will add another series or multiple single games against one another at a hub in Arizona, Florida or Southern California. Iowa Softball HC Renee Gillispie: “Say we’re playing Washington and UCLA, and then Rutgers is coming down and playing Michigan and Minnesota. We will all be at the same site and playing all at the same time. We just hope that they’re not going to take us to the East Coast and the West Coast the same year.” More. (link)

Advance has launched the Athlete National Sports Business Clearinghouse (ANSBC), which is designed to help student-athletes identify vetted and trustworthy NIL business partners, agents, financial advisors and other professional service providers. Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) has subsequently announced it will require agents and other third parties to register with the clearinghouse before engaging with them on behalf of any of SANIL’s partner schools. SANIL Co-Founder/CEO Jason Belzer: “It will automatically force the vast majority of big agents and even the smaller ones to do it. And hopefully it will start creating a critical mass that will basically make it a requirement for everyone. Because if you’re not in, you’re not allowed to do it. We certainly as the primary collective operator can require it.” Advance Co-Founder/Managing Partner Courtney Altemus: “Think of it as like TSA PreCheck. You pay so you can get through the [airport security] line faster. They’re paying so that at least there’s some level of diligence that athletes know that has been performed, and they will stand out relative to their peers and competitors who haven’t engaged in the process.” (link)

Michigan Sports Properties GM Jennifer Cadicamo sits down with Iowa AD Beth Goetz, Texas Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Sports Administration Sarah Baumgartner and LEARFIELD NIL Partnerships Coordinator for Alabama Lexi Graber to discuss several topics, including how to support student-athletes in the NIL era. Baumgartner notes the hardest thing to find for student-athletes is time. “We can’t create it, can’t add it to their days, and at this level they’re here to win championships, they're here to go to school and get their degree. … I think the timepiece is really critical, because I think that's what weighs heavily on our kids. It adds stress, and there's the mental health component, so I think how do we help them with that is in my opinion as important as the content that we're offering and the education we’re offering.” Goetz on the belief among many female student-athletes NIL opportunities are tied to their physical appearance: “There’s a validity to that in some cases, maybe not all, but certainly in some. I think in and around that specific topic it’s something we have to continue to talk to our student-athletes about, and I think it goes back to you…making sure that when they're building their own personal brand what is important to them and how those values are going to align with those opportunities. … We need to continue to make sure that we help them and we position them as young women and individuals in a really holistic perspective that certainly showcases their athletic talent, but…also showcases the other things they're really passionate about.” Lots more. Coaches Corner…
+ Long Beach State Women’s Volleyball HC Tyler Hildebrand is stepping down after two seasons to pursue other opportunities. (link)
+ Harvard will name Rutgers Football AC Andrew Aurich as its new HC, according to the Harvard Crimson. No official announcement as of yet. (link)
+ UCLA Football HC Chip Kelly is pursuing not only NFL OC jobs, but also OC jobs in the Big Ten “if the barrage of media reports is to be believed,” according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who notes that “if Ohio State offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien fills the head coaching vacancy at Boston College, as many expect, Kelly could become a top candidate in Columbus to coach under Ryan Day, his former player (at New Hampshire). In other words, a Big Ten-bound head coach making $6M annually (approximately) would abdicate his position for a lesser role and lower compensation. And he’s making no secret of it, for the situation is playing out publicly on a daily basis.” In assessing why Kelly appears to be so eager to leave Westwood, Wilner points out two possibilities should the Bruins “regress” next season. “First, Kelly’s buyout drops to $4 million (approx.); second, a new boss arrives. [Chancellor Gene] Block is stepping down this summer after 17 years leading the campus. There’s a good chance the next chancellor will take a more favorable view of football and zero chance the next chancellor will take a lesser view of football.” Meanwhile, UCLA parting ways with Kelly is inadvisable, as “the list of replacements isn’t nearly as strong now as it might be next winter with a new chancellor and, potentially, more resources.” (link)
+ With Gonzaga in the unfamiliar position of being on the men’s hoops tourney bubble, Zags HC Mark Few tells The Athletic’s Brian Hamilton revenue-sharing would help a place like Gonzaga; otherwise, the Zags may have to, as Hamilton puts it, “accept a broader interpretation of NIL to woo the talent necessary to compete at an elite level.” Few acknowledges as much: “We’re going to have to step up and continue to adapt in that direction. The best thing is, we’re open-minded. The beauty of this program, the beauty of this school, of this community, is that everybody kind of pulls the rope in the same direction.” (link)

Dollars & Cents…
+ Tennessee Tech alumni and board of trustees members Fred Lowery & Tom Jones have donated $1M to the school to support the Golden Eagles’ athletic programs. TTU AD Mark Wilson: "When donors and alumni give to Tech athletics, they are directly supporting our student-athletes and making a meaningful investment in the future of this university. Tech's student athletes have posted average GPAs exceeding 3.0 for 30 straight semesters. With new leadership from head football coach Bobby Wilder, a rebuilt stadium on the horizon and the generous backing of leaders like Tom Jones and Fred Lowery, Tech is doubling down on its commitment to cultivating champions on and off the field." (link)
+ Texas Tech has announced two additional upgrades to Jones AT&T Stadium for the 2024 season, including a Clair Audio sound system and an expanded Daktronics video board in the north end zone that will measure 37’ x 139’. The cost of the two upgrades has been incorporated into the overall $242M south end zone project. (link)
+ Under Armour reported a 6% revenue drop to $1.5B in the quarter ended December 31, during which income fell nearly 8% to $114M. Sales through retailers fell 13% to $712M, while sales through online channels and company-owned stores were up 4% to $741M. Sales in the U.S., Under Armour’s biggest market, slid 12% to $915M, while international sales rose 7% to $566M. The company has revised its full-year estimates and expects revenue to be down 3% to 4% instead of the previously anticipated 2% to 4%. (link)
+ Peloton reports that despite a strong second quarter, “one initiative that hasn’t worked is our premium co-branded Bike experiment with the University of Michigan. Notwithstanding the football team’s success winning the national championship, we sold substantially fewer Bikes to alumni and boosters than we expected. What seemed like a good idea didn’t deliver. So instead of launching additional co-branded bikes in school colors, we will end-of-life this hardware initiative.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey to ESPN/SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum on the issues facing college sports: “You just look at the last 24 hours. … You have an announcement among three media entities about a new streaming service, you have the situation at Dartmouth, you have other court filings, you have this decision about the temporary restraining order not being granted in the particular matter involving the Tennessee and Virginia attorneys general. That used to be like six months worth of news in college sports. That's all compressed into 24 hours and that's just the cycle we work on. That's why I tend to think if we look at the big scheme of things from an NCAA level and focus on trying to have the right set of oversight, make adjustments around outcomes of court cases, deal with the litigation that is already in front of us, that's the proper focus. I think that the pursuit of some of these particular cases through the enforcement process distracts us from solving the big problems. I at least have an understanding of why people pursue these issues; it hasn’t made it awkward for me. I get to have direct conversations with a variety of constituents every day.” (link)

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Representative Alma Adams (D-NC) have reintroduced a bill that includes provisions designed to strengthen Title IX public reporting requirements for schools. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz: “Per summary from Murphy's office, the bill "will help weed out reporting tricks by programs to skirt non-discrimination laws and make it easier for athletes and stakeholders to evaluate persisting gaps in athletic programs or use publicly available data in their claims against schools." More from Arizona Interim AD Mike Candrea, who addressed the possibility of cutting sports during yesterday’s presser by saying: “The escalation of football and (men’s) basketball have caused us to take a look at everything else and that the average is what 17 sports in the Big 12? I’m hoping that we don’t get to that point for a lot of different reasons. But I can’t say that that’s not going to be something that will be looked at. I don’t think cutting sports is the answer to the problems that we have right now. You have to look at Title IX — there are a lot of different things that go into this. Just because 17 is the number in the Big 12 does not necessarily mean that that’s the right number at the University of Arizona.” Candrea also noted UA is not the only school facing headwinds: “We’ve done a lot of the right things. But I think now we’ve put the brakes on and said ‘Wait. Moving forward, what do we need to do to make this thing work?’ That’s the information piece that I don’t have everything in front of me right now. But I promise you that we have very talented people here that have a passion for this place, that are going to make this place better. I go back to telling them all, ‘Let’s make it 1% better every day and we’ll crawl out of this.’” (link)

North Dakota AD Bill Chaves worries the attention being paid to the issues dominating college sports headlines is coming at the expense of March Madness. “The brackets have become a cultural phenomenon with the first week full of David vs. Goliath storylines with the second and third weeks traditionally focused on the sport’s blue bloods. We (in the industry) all get that, we all understand it and we all accept it. What I do not want to accept is that the issues that we are dealing with today, mainly at the highest level of college football, will impact a cultural phenomenon that our country loves and cherishes.” Chaves acknowledges that “we, at those other schools,” – namely, those in DI but not FBS – understand why the conversation is so focused on FBS, “but for the layperson not working in this every day or an elected official that is working on other and potentially greater issues, what they should grasp is that first weekend of March Madness is at immense risk. Chaves points out that the machinations to form a European Super League in soccer were thwarted in large part by the fans of the very clubs trying to create it. They did so in order to protect the FA Cup, which includes every team at every level in professional English football. “March Madness is the closest thing that Americans have to that competition, and it is worth protecting and preserving.” (link)

In honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, LEARFIELD hosted an NIL Insights & Learnings Session with a focus on current women leaders discussing topics ranging from the impact of NIL on female student-athletes & the growth of NIL opportunities to some of the challenges student-athletes face in the NIL space today. Panelists included Iowa AD Beth Goetz, Texas Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Sports Administration Sarah Baumgartner, NIL Partnership Coordinator for Crimson Tide Sports Marketing Lexi Graber, as well as VP & General Manager for Michigan Sports Properties Jennifer Cadicamo. The session is one segment in a quarterly series provided to athletic staff of LEARFIELD partner institutions as part of the company’s NIL solutions & services. (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos observes there has been something of a reset in the NIL market, a sentiment shared by Florida Football HC Billy Napier, who noted today: “I think each cycle, the market changes, if that makes sense. I think we’ve seen an evolution. We’re talking about drastic change every six months since I’ve been the coach here if that makes sense. It took us a little bit of time there to get in position but I don’t know that there’s a number. I think that number grows every six months.” Meanwhile, an SEC player personnel staffer tells Nakos: “What I feel like, it’s kind of been a shift from – at first it was the recruiting front because the incoming guys caught the first wave. They were the ones to be able to capitalize on the era when everyone was trying to figure out what was going on. It seems to me there’s been a shift from the early stage to the retain portion. More people are seeing it’s about maintaining your roster and keeping your guys another year, rather than the young fellas who aren’t a proven commodity.” An SEC collective operator adds: “Kind of the law of unintended consequences: because of the portal, coaches now aren’t as dependent on high school recruiting.” (link)

Wichita State Softball HC Kristi Bredbenner, who is entering her 13th season and has led the Shockers to back-to-back NCAA regional appearances, joins MB Sports’ Matt Banker from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Convention to discuss the most pressing issues in the industry, including the transfer portal, conference realignment and the preservation of Olympic sports. In discussing the value proposition of Olympic sports, Bredbenner tells Banker: “We get that we're not a gigantic revenue builder, but I will tell you what, women's softball is making some money for ESPN, and there's a lot of schools out there that are able to sustain some of their expenses with the revenue that they're bringing in from ticket sales and opportunities for sponsorships and things like that. It’s a growing sport, it's an emerging sport, but as it grows it also gets more expensive, so we all get it, and I think we're keeping a watchful eye on what this landscape looks like.” Bredbenner believes a regionalized model is viable but notes the challenge will be weather. “You’ve got a northern group that can only go down south. Who are they playing against and how is it benefiting them? … I think there's a lot of things that they can look at and if that keeps softball whole as a Division I body and avoids the tiers, great.” Full video. ESPN generated $4.07B in revenue domestically for its most recent reporting quarter, up 1% YoY. That figure increases to $4.84B with international tallies added in. The company also reported $255M in operating income. During the earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger addressed the announcement that ESPN will launch its DTC platform in the fall of next year: “We’re excited to offer a more unified streaming experience, which we expect will deliver strong benefits in terms of higher engagement, lower churn and greater advertising potential. When we launch our standalone ESPN service, we’ll also make it available on Disney+ for bundled subscribers, just as we’ve done for Hulu.” In an interview with CNBC before the call, Iger acknowledged he had not shared the ESPN-Fox-WBD super streamer news with any of ESPN’s traditional distribution partners. “I think in many ways they probably would understand—or should understand—that what we’re creating here is a distribution mechanism to reach consumers where they are today.” Sportico’s Anthony Crupi notes ESPN closed out 2023 with 70.2M subscribers, down 5% YoY. NFL spokesperson Alex Reithmiller, in fact, tells the Wall Street Journal: “We’re aware of yesterday’s announcement and are still gathering details to understand this proposed new streaming service.” Fubo, meanwhile, released a statement asserting that “every consumer in America should be concerned about the intent behind this joint venture and its impact on fair market competition.” Fubo added the companies “could dictate market terms in a manner that may not serve the broader interests of consumers” given their vast market share in sports programming. (link, link)

Cablefax’s Amy Maclean points out that “[Iger] says the sports [joint venture] is for those who want sports but don't want to sign up for a big bundle. It's also for those who have left the traditional bundle or may want to leave. Compare that to Fox CEO [Lachlan Murdoch] saying earlier today that Fox would not be launching this product if it thought it was going to significantly affect our pay TV affiliate partners.” (link)

Disney will invest $1.5B to acquire a stake in Epic Games as part of an agreement through which the two will “collaborate on an all-new games and entertainment universe that will further expand the reach of beloved Disney stories and experiences.” Per Disney’s release: “In addition to being a world-class games experience and interoperating with Fortnite, the new persistent universe will offer a multitude of opportunities for consumers to play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more.” Disney also notes that its mobile games have 1.5B global installs, and to date, nine Disney games franchises have each grossed at least $1B in sales. CEO Bob Iger: “Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney’s beloved brands and franchises with the hugely popular Fortnite in a transformational new games and entertainment universe. This marks Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of games and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion.” (link)
