Springfield President Mary-Beth Cooper chats with The Springfield Student about becoming the Vice Chair of the NCAA Board of Governors and key
DIII issues. “When I am at the Board of Governors meeting, I always remind them about Division III athletes. [I ask]; ‘So how do you think Division III athletes will feel about that?’ For example, there was a proposal about health care, [offering] two years of post-graduation [coverage] for student-athletes. It was initially suggested that Division I student-athletes have two-year coverage after graduation. I raised my hand and said, ‘What about the [Division III] athletes? Can they be afforded the same benefit?’ And the answer was, ‘Let’s look into it.’ Then the answer became yes, that all three divisions will get that benefit.” Cooper’s top priority: “ensuring that student-athletes are not seen as employees.” (link)

#7: DIII Men’s Basketball Officiating National Coordinator Jim Haney joins
Hoopsville’s Dave McHugh to talk all things officiating, with Haney stating of his seven-year tenure in the role: “We're never going to get to where you and I want it, but to say that we haven't had success would be wrong, because we have been successful,” pointing to officiating, communication with coaches and accountability all in a better position. “The overall consistency and accountability is getting better. The willingness to look at film and critique their own games is getting better. I am setting up a national website, with the help of the coaches, of getting plays from all over the country. […] The coaches are a big part of this. They're helping me out by sending me plays. That's why I keep saying the transparency between the
NCAA and the
NABC, there used to be no dialogue. Now we're one unit, just pulling the rope and trying to make it better for everybody.” On the officiating shortage, Haney notes it hasn’t hit MBB yet, but the pipeline of officials is thinning. He also coordinates high school officials and is down 175 from three years ago. More. (link); Haney also took to
X (formerly Twitter) to call for more replay in MBB following a missed call at the end of Saturday’s Morrisville-SUNY Poly matchup, stating: “in 2024 this is unacceptable with replay available in 80% of our schools.” (link)
