ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips reflects on his three years in the role with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, including the impact of NIL, the transfer portal and the ongoing legal dispute with Florida State. He also notes of NCAA President Charlie Baker’s Project DI proposal: “Charlie’s initial statement back in early December was a conversation starter. There’s not everything that we agree on that he stated, and he wasn’t looking for that to be the beginning and the end of the conversation and this is what we were going to do. I think he was just trying to get us to start thinking collectively on what we believe to be maybe the best path for our four particular conferences, as well as college athletics.” Phillips also talks about the Success Initiative and notes: “I don’t think there’s another conference that’s going to be distributing money based on performance on an unequal basis. That, to me, is a reflection of how the ACC has tried to address some of the things that have been important to us and try to address the part of the revenue piece we’re trying to figure out.” Despite the turbulent state of the industry, Phillips tells Portnoy college athletics is worth fighting for: “Even though the major challenges and the incredible issues that come forward [are] sometimes hard to believe. If you recalibrate and remember it’s about supporting young people at an important time, I think it helps drive you through some of these difficult moments.” (link)

Leaders from FCS and DI-AAA schools have formed a working group consisting of more than 200 individuals seeking to chart a path forward. Stephen F. Austin AD Ryan Ivey serves as the group's co-chair and tells On3’s Eric Prisbell: “There is change coming, and we know we can’t continue to operate in the status quo. We’re trying to be proactive. … I don’t think there is any question that the urgency has picked up. Hence the frequency of meetings.” Prisbell reports the group is drafting what is being called DI-AAA/FCS Collaboration: Division I Position Paper – expected to be finalized in June – to clarify and gain consensus on distinguishing factors of both subdivisions’ financial models and operational philosophies. The paper’s goal is to “create specific actionable strategies to help the subdivisions chart a course forward to play a distinctive role and actualize the important value within Division I athletics.” Will revenue-sharing be part of the group’s plan? Ivey: “There’s no revenue to share, my friend. When I’m sharing nothing, it’s still nothing. And at the end of the year, do I get to send everyone a bill for the debt we have?” Ivey also comments on the NCAA potentially losing the House case and what that would mean for schools like SFA: “You can come to Nacogdoches and try to get some money out of us, but I don’t know where it’s coming from. I say that very lightheartedly. I would argue that institutions at the FCS level, we’re not the institutions causing the major issues. This is not meant to be pointing fingers and saying, ‘They’re to blame.’ But we are fundamentally different than Texas A&M.” (link)

The Big 12 is moving from its current headquarters to another office around a mile away in the Williams Square high-rise complex. Technically, the league will lease 14,107 square feet of Class A space. Notably: “The conference will join firms such as Caterpillar, Accenture and Flowserve at Williams Square. The Big 12 has retained Cushman & Wakefield to help it find a buyer for its headquarters building along John Carpenter Freeway.” (link)

Tulane AD David Harris provides several facilities updates, including the installation of Hellas turf at Greer Field Turchin Stadium (baseball) and in the Teresa Sofio Hitting Facility in time for the upcoming season. Additionally, the new swimming and diving locker room will be revealed to student-athletes, coaches and staff “very soon,” and Phase 2 of the James W. Wilson, Jr. Center renovation, which includes modernizing the atrium and the second floor office and hallway spaces, is underway with an expected completion date in June. The Indoor Practice Facility project, which will take place on Brown Field, will occur over the summer along with the start of construction on a new tennis facility, which will feature six competition courts and spectator seating. Georgia’s FY23 produced $210.1M in revenue over $186.6 in expenses, leading to a $23.5M operating surplus, which was the smallest since 2016. From the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer: “Georgia says if nearly $22 million in expenses for capital projects and athletics’ $4.5 million contribution to the university were included, Georgia would run a deficit for the year. [...] its royalties, licensing, advertisement and sponsorships grow $2.4 million to $23.2 million with football accounting for $1.8 million of that rise. On the expense side, support staff/administrative pay, benefits and bonuses jumped from $29.0 million to $33.7 million.” Also of note, Football’s recruiting line item was $5.3M. (link)

Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) Co-Founder/CEO Jason Belzer tells Football Scoop’s Zach Barnett he has “told every AD in the country, you have to tell your coaching staff, 'No more hiring analysts. Stop spending money and figure out how to fund your NIL program. Period, end of story.’ We have to pay the labor, and the bill is only going to get bigger and bigger. So, how could you turn around and say, yeah we could hire more support staff? That's not realistic.” Belzer also talks about the nature of SANIL’s relationships with its partners, such as Oklahoma, and says: "We look at it as we work for the University of Oklahoma. We don't have a contract with the university, but we are fully transparent in what we do. They know every dollar that comes in, every dollar that goes out. They know every donor that puts money in." To illustrate how businesslike managing rosters has become, Belzer explains of star OL Cayden Green’s decision to transfer: “Just like everybody else, we presented him with a contract for the coming year. He was still under contract with us. When he did respond with us, he basically said he wanted substantially more money. We looked at it and we said, 'Okay, we're not going to give you what you're asking, but we're willing to come up.' And we basically came close to matching what he had asked, and then he sort of said, 'You know what? I'm going to go into the Portal.' At the end of the day, we can only have those conversations.” (link)

Boston College is expected to name Ohio State OC Bill O’Brien as its next Football HC, and he will be replaced in Columbus by UCLA HC Chip Kelly, according to multiple reports. USA Today’s Kenny Jacoby reviews documentation provided by Brenda Tracy that shows former Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker reported experiencing “serious health conditions” that precluded him from participating in a number of interviews & hearings surrounding his sexual harassment case with Tracy. Los Angeles-based attorney who represents sexual abuse victims David Ring: “It’s kind of an eye-roller for a person to say, ‘I’m in such distress, there’s no way I can participate in an interview,’ and at the same time they’re out making public appearances, traveling, giving interviews.” Lots more. Iowa State has acquired a Cessna 560XL airplane for $5.06M, according to Bleeding Heartland’s Laura Belin, who notes the “2004 model Cessna arrived in Ames last month and is intended to replace the university’s King Air 350.” ISU says the plane was purchased for the athletic department’s primary use with the ISU Foundation using the athletic department's cash reserves for the transaction. The Athletic’s operating loss shrank from $9.6M in 2022 Q4 to $4.4M in 2023 Q4. The outlet’s revenue increased 31.3% to $38.5M. Overall, the New York Times added 300K digital subscriptions and surpassed $1B in subscription revenue alone for the first time. The NYT reported total revenue of $676.2M for Q4. (link)

For years, colleges and universities have been bracing for the enrollment cliff whereby the number of high school graduates is expected to shrink across the next 5-10 years by as much as 15%. The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Dan Bauman reports the U.S. Census Bureau initially “figured that, after cresting at 4.3M in 2025, America’s population of 18-year-olds would shrink, then hover around 4.2M each year until 2034. Following this period of stagnation, the Bureau predicted that the nation’s 18-year-old cohort would expand, growing to 4.45M people by 2045.” Now, however, the Bureau has revised its forecast. Instead of rebounding at some point in the mid-2030s, the number of 18-year-olds is now projected to contract after reaching a ~4.2M apex in 2033, shrinking to around 3.8M by 2039. After that, the Bureau doesn’t anticipate the population of 18-year-olds will exceed 4M people in any year this century. Bauman notes nothing is yet set in stone as the class of 2045 hasn’t even been born yet; however, Georgetown Edunomics Lab Director Marguerite Roza still advises universities to remain ready to adapt, something for which higher ed institutions are not traditionally known. “At many institutions, you can’t make changes without the faculty voting on them. And faculty have a preference for doing things the way they did last year. So being super nimble and adaptive isn’t what we normally see for universities. Normally what they do is layer on new things. And it’s much harder for them to trim away, and cancel programs and majors and eliminate departments.” (link)

Missouri AD Desiree Reed-Francois joins Women Leaders CEO Patti Phillips to discuss building and sustaining a championship culture and outlines three tactical steps: belief, execution and evolution: “You have to make sure that you’re getting to know your people, that your people feel seen, that they feel empowered. … When we first got to Mizzou, 74% of our staff felt that Mizzou stood for mediocrity. And we had to shift that, and that's through no fault of anyone's, it's just that there were a lot of changes and there was a lot of insecurity. Staff sizes were cut, and so I thought we've got to really build from within. Because you’ve got to win within first, and then you can spread it out.” Reed-Francois also emphasizes the importance of belief when building a culture. “You have to believe in the purpose. You’ve got to believe in the mission. Your team has to believe in you as the leader. They've got to believe in themselves that they can do it. And then they've got to believe in one another, and that's the first step in building that championship culture.” On the importance of evolution, Reed-Francois explains: “When you look at the factors that impact business – and make no mistake about it, we're CEOs of $150M companies – you have to look at everything from technology, you've got to look at talent, you've got to look at economics, the geopolitical, your social. … When you look at what's going on…our entire economic model is shifting. And so that's why I think as a leader you have to embrace the change. One of our core values is innovation, and you have to really really believe that because when there's massive change it also means there's massive opportunity so as Leaders we need to seize that.” Full podcast. Virginia Tech President Tim Sands and AD Whit Babcock both addressed the athletic department this week about the industry’s uncertain future, and Sands in an interview with The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel afterwards noted: “No one can read the tea leaves that clearly, but I would trust Whit’s judgment over anybody’s.” Babcock noted that it’s “interesting to be at a place 10 years. … It’s easier to leave than to stay sometimes – your decisions catch up with you – and the fact that Dr. Sands is committed and I’m certainly committed, I absolutely believe it’s an advantage just that working relationship. I also feel like it speaks to how challenging the jobs can be, where it’s rare to have long tenures, especially with the president.” Sands went on to note that during his first six or seven years in Blacksburg he was “pretty happy that I didn’t have to spend much time on athletics, and I could delegate it to Whit, and he would keep me informed. But that changed a few years ago, and so now it’s almost a daily activity. ... It’s always on our minds.” Looking forward, Sands says he and Babcock are “trying to become the longest-serving pair. So that’s the goal. No pressure on Kentucky. I really do think it’s a huge value to the institution having that stability. ... It’s just been a real pleasure working with him and really learning from the wisdom he’s developed over the last decade, just extraordinary. I feel like my position is a lot easier knowing that I have an AD who can set me straight and give me the real deal whenever I need it.” Both Sands and Babcock say their interactions with peers at Florida State have remained civil, with Babcock adding: “I think it will be a long, drawn-out fight. Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh emphasized the importance of supporting student-athletes’ mental wellbeing during an annual presentation to the UW Board of Regents Audit Committee: "That is an area in which there's significant risk, significant health and wellness safety concerns. And it's not limited to college athletics. It's a trend or an epidemic that we all play a part in. But that is the thing that worries me the most. That is the thing that keeps me up at night. And that's the thing that we are prioritizing as an area of emphasis." McIntosh also noted that all 23 Badgers teams went through a mental health screening last fall, and there’s an assumption that some student-athletes are likely to experience mental health symptoms in the second half of a semester because of academic and sport pressures. The athletic department also organized two suicide prevention trainings during the 2022-23 school year. "There's just really a feeling of we're all in this together from a holistic campus perspective. And it's one that we'll continue to focus on." (link)

Sacred Heart this spring will begin renovations to the William Pitt Athletic & Convocation Center. In the upgraded layout, the court will rotate 90 degrees from its current position and be surrounded by permanent bleacher-style and backed arena-style seating. Maryland professor/longtime sports journalist and commentator Kevin Blackistone joins NPR’s David Greene to discuss the state of college sports and notes the issue is one of economic and racial justice. “I think people are uncomfortable recognizing the critique of college sports as a plantation economy, and the reason I bring up the plantation economy is because the laborers in college sports who generate the bulk of the revenue are black males who play college football and college basketball. … It is from the largesse of the labor of black males in football and basketball that allow [all the other] sports to live. So, if you step back and think about it, these black males are out in the field of football and basketball generating all these revenues for the house on the hill to be able to prosper doing all the other things that happen there, none of which are things those black male laborers participate in.” Blackistone goes on to note that “no more than 3% of undergraduate enrollees are black males [at PWIs, particularly those in the Power 5], but upwards of 50-60% of the rosters of football teams and basketball teams at those same schools are black males…which, to me, means for the most part they wind up on college campuses not to be part of the class of students who are there to be educated but are really just part of this college athletic industrial complex that needs to generate massive amounts of revenue.” Blackistone also recounts an experience at a UMD symposium focused on what it’s like to be a student-athlete, during which a student explained she resented a football student-athlete because she had to work three jobs to pay her way through school while the football player received free tuition for playing a sport. The FB student-athlete explained that while he understood her perspective and what she had to sacrifice, he had undergone four surgeries to continue playing football. Those surgeries and rehab cost the student-athlete time in the classroom. Blackistone: “He said, ‘So, you may have to sacrifice time [and money], but I’m giving my body. I have to persevere in a different sort of way.” More. (link)
