As part of the university’s five-year plan, La Sierra has proposed athletics investments to add Women’s Flag Football, Beach Volleyball, Golf and Men’s Volleyball in the next two years, in addition to increases in scholarships. The plan includes plans to eliminate its $10.2M deficit by 2027-28 with the help of drawdowns of its $140M quasi endowments. Board of Trustees Chair Bradford Newton: “We have approved the budget and funding plan [for] two more years and have high confidence in the university’s potential for growth. The inclusion of key campus leaders in this pivotal undertaking was a major factor in getting this work done. Now we may proceed with a multi-year strategy that lays a roadmap for the university’s future. We are grateful for the deep well of knowledge and insights the team brought to this process.” (link)

Columbia (SC) will add men’s Basketball to its portfolio, starting next year. President John Dozier: “Columbia College continues to grow and change before our eyes. The Lewiston Tribune’s Teren Kowatsch writes on the impact of early season Baseball events across the NAIA. Arizona Christian HC Joe McDonald, who helped ideate the East/West Challenge: “It’s the premier event of the year where every team is ranked or receiving votes. It’s almost a preview of some guaranteed teams to be at the World Series. ... That’s why we put it together, to have that pre-confercence, beginning of the season mix of the top teams in the country. There’s some other really good events out there. ... Early on we like to play as many different teams as possible and that’s the concept for every team (at the Challenge).” Kowatsch: “On a micro level, within the communities of the schools, those family connections play a big role and can make the distance from home or from families just a little more manageable. NAIA-level athletics has almost always had an uphill climb. From players looking to go professional, public access to games and finances, it’s always going to be a slower-moving road than the NCAA. But, with events like the Challenge and the Collision and, of course, the World Series, NAIA college baseball is in a great place. And with the success of all the aforementioned events, it’ll only get better.” More. (link)

At UW-Eau Claire, Black men who are student-athletes have a retention rate in the 90% range, while those of the same group who aren't athletes have a retention rate in the 70% range. Fox, ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery are creating a joint streaming platform to share sports assets, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint and Isabella Simonetti, who report the service will be available to ESPN+, Hulu and Max subscribers. Each company will own one-third of the product, which is expected to launch later this year. (link); Disney CEO Bob Iger: “The launch of this new streaming sports service is a significant moment for Disney and ESPN, a major win for sports fans and an important step forward for the media business. This means the full suite of ESPN channels will be available to consumers alongside the sports programming of other industry leaders as part of a differentiated sports-centric service. I’m grateful to Jimmy Pitaro and the team at ESPN, who are at the forefront of innovating on behalf of consumers to create new offerings with more choice and greater value.” The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch reports the “joint venture has not yet finished its research on where [the price] will land. But for some guidance, based on those briefed on the deal, the likelihood is it will be priced between where a standalone RSN might charge for its monthly offering (think $20-30 monthly depending on where you live) or what you might pay for bundled services (think $75 and up). Could that mean around $50-55? We’ll learn soon.” The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand adds that while the deal is a three-way split in ownership, the “fees that each company will receive are based on what they earn in their cable deals and with services, like YouTube TV. … This means that ESPN, which receives the highest fees, will receive a higher percentage from each subscriber to the new venture.” (link)

The U.S. Education Department is relaxing several requirements so colleges and universities dealing with delayed student financial aid information can better focus on processing aid applications and delivering aid packages to students. Specifically, the ED says it will reduce the proportion of financial aid forms it reviews for potential inaccuracy, suspend all new reviews of colleges’ compliance with financial aid rules and offer institutions flexibility in their applications to renew their eligibility to access federal financial aid programs. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona: “We are determined to drive a constant drumbeat of action to fulfill the transformational potential of the better FAFSA. The steps we’re announcing today build on the Better FAFSA College Support Strategy by making it easier for colleges and universities to get financial aid packages to students and families as quickly as possible. We will strive to leave no stone unturned to make this FAFSA process easier and simpler for colleges, universities and students.” (link)
