As the sun appears to be setting on Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff’s tenure, JohnCanzano.com’s namesake looks back at the past three years, which he contends were “marred by betrayal, back-biting, and dissension by the conference’s presidents and chancellors. Kliavkoff’s failure to manage his board became a glaring problem and his biggest misfire. Above the board-room table, the Pac-12 CEO Group members smiled, discussed business, and plodded along, but below it, they had guns pointed at each other.” One league AD tells Canzano: “A very nice guy, but George may be incompetent.” That said, Canzano attributes the Pac-12’s downfall to multiple factors, including Kliavkoff’s missteps, former Commissioner Larry Scott’s leadership, for-profit media companies. One Pac-12 exec tells him: “Fox screwed us and I would argue that after that initial ESPN offer in the fall, ESPN was no friend.” Ultimately, though, the league dissolved on Kliavkoff’s watch, and Canzano asks: “Can you fire someone with cause for being ‘too nice’ and ‘too trusting?’ How about ‘too easily played’ by others? I’m asking because those are phrases that come up when Kliavkoff is talked about. At some point, I’m certain Kliavkoff will go public with his side of the story. And I’d love to hear it.” (link)

More from Texas AD Chris Del Conte’s town hall, during which he pointed out that in 1903 the Longhorns were members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, a precursor to the SEC. “That was where we were at one time, and we’re just going home. … We’re in a place that the brands we’re going to get to play and who we’re going to be a part of, it makes sense. We’re not flying from coast to coast. We’re not going up and down. We’re in a region that makes sense to us, the South, and the teams we get to play.” While the SEC continues to ponder a nine-game football schedule after the next two seasons, Del Conte says the only way he could envision playing a Big 12 team was if they came to Austin. “If they want to come play here at Texas, I’m all in. I’m not sure yet how we can do a home-and-home until I know how all that balances out.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel doesn't expect former Football HC Jim Harbaugh’s departure to significantly impact the NCAA’s investigations into potential violations. “It just will continue to move forward, and we'll see where it goes from there. We'll continue to work with them. We'll continue to support their efforts to investigate." Manuel also addressed the departures of several FB ACs, explaining that he had already planned on adding "a couple million dollars" to the salary pool before Harbaugh left and that both he and HC Sherrone Moore have made efforts to retain as many ACs as possible. "I won't go into details, but all those discussions have occurred. People made choices to leave. It wasn't because of a lack of effort on our part to keep people here." (link)
|
Michigan AD Warde Manuel also says he continues to support Men’s Basketball HC Juwan Howard: “It would be fair to say I have not really thought about any changes in our men’s basketball program at this time. It’s one of those things that — I guess I can’t say it any clearer; I want to support Juwan to be successful and have not given any moment or thought of anything about changes at this time. And so my support is of him, of our student-athletes, and our staff. … Juwan and I have talked, yes. And we’ll continue to have those conversations as the season goes through and I continue to support him in an effort to turn this around and win like he expects to. There’s no lack of effort from our student-athletes or coaches. And it’s a lack of execution at times and we have to be better — he knows that, they know that and expectations are high, but I will continue to have the conversations with him. And we’ll continue to support him in our program and continue to be there for him.” (link)

College football officials later this month are expected to discuss the addition of a two-minute warning, and NCAA National Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw tells The Athletic’s Chris Vannini: “With our change in the clock rules, we have a number of things that hinge on a certain period in the game, like the first down situation. If you had a definitive two-minute break, then you could flip all of your clock rules. Like today, the 10-second runoff (for penalty and injury timeouts) doesn’t kick in until one minute (left). So we think there might be some value in having a two-minute stop and then now we go to post-timing rules and make all of it contingent on the two-minute.” While a two-minute warning as a free timeout runs the risk of lengthening the game, Shaw said it could simply fill the place of an existing TV timeout and adds: “We’d really like to avoid the back-to-backs. Nobody likes that. If we did it, the media partner would have to hold their last timeout to that, so they couldn’t get their timeouts in and then get a freebie. It would be the last media timeout and give them assurance they’ll get them all in. I think TV would be supportive of it.” (link)

The ACC wrapped up its winter meetings today. The three-day confabulation included individual and joint sessions attended by league ADs, FARs and SWAs, updates and presentations from ESPN and ACC Network, ACC CORE (Champions of Racial Equity) and the ACC SAAC. Additional discussion topics included the selection of the 2024 ACC Postgraduate Scholar-Athletes, conference revenues, the College Football Playoff, the use of helmet technology in football, future men’s and women’s basketball scheduling and the postseason, recommendations from the Olympic Sport Committees and discussions around Olympic Sport policies and procedures. In men’s and women’s basketball specifically, the membership determined that for the 2024-25 season, the top 15 teams would compete in the conference tournaments. Additionally, the league decided the men’s basketball regular season will continue with a 20-game conference slate while the women will continue to play an 18-game campaign. For the 2024 football season ACC teams will be provided with access to in-game video and coach-to-player communication devices that will allow for one-way communication between the sideline and player(s) on the field. Conference leaders also announced Wake Forest President Susan Wente will serve as the Vice-Chair of the league’s Board of Directors through the remainder of the 2023-24 academic year and throughout 2024-25, replacing former North Carolina Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz. Indiana finished FY23 with a $5.6M surplus with $144.7M in revenue and $139M in expenses. The Hoosiers’ revenue included $47.8M in media rights distributions, $24.5M in ticket sales and $19.6M in donor contributions. Men’s basketball ticket sales came in at $12.2M, while football ticket sales were $10.3M. Expenses included $25.9M in coaches’ salaries, $23.8M in support staff salaries, $19.1M in student aid and $5.3M in game guarantees. The financial report does not include former Football HC Tom Allen’s buyout, which will be reflected in next year’s accounting, and Hoosiers AD Scott Dolson notes: “We have gifts coming in over time. We’re taking out a loan for the immediate expenses. What it will show (next year) is higher expenses, but also an influx of a loan that we will be paying off over time with donor funds and operating money we put towards that. It should not affect a profit or a loss. It should be a wash in fiscal year 2024.” (link)

Ohio State has parted ways with Men’s Basketball HC Chris Holtmann, according to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman, who points out the decision was made by Buckeyes AD Gene Smith and not incoming AD Ross Bjork. The Athletic’s Brendan Quinn pulls back the curtain on BYU’s first men’s hoops season in the Big 12 and notes that “on-court success is required at BYU not for banners, but for the mission. As the school sees it, winning begets attention, attention begets interest, interest spreads the word.” In fact, BYU Advancement VP Keith Vorkink tells Quinn: “It would be remarkable if people could understand how much interest there is from the leadership of our church in our athletic programs. They’re not thinking, let’s go win a championship because that’s cool.” Vorkink also acknowledges that the scope of the job has changed for Cougars HC Mark Pope: “We wrestle with this. When I visit with Mark, we say, ‘We gotta live in the tension.’ That’s how we describe it. We can’t run from the tension.” At the same time, Vorkink understands that “Mark has a brutal job. He’s a coach in the Big 12 and we’re asking him to do it a different way. There is an element that is like, we’re constraining him, we’re keeping him from just leaning into the way that people think about being successful in basketball. But we think there’s a space for a successful program that doesn’t do it like everyone else. Time will tell.” (link)

Michigan is creating an executive general manager (EGM) position in partnership with Altius Sports Partners and a senior manager of business development in collaboration with LEARFIELD and Michigan Sports Properties. Wolverines AD Warde Manuel: "I am pleased to announce this unique and strategic investment through a new agreement with Altius Sports Partners and the growth of our Learfield relationships. The dedicated roles through ASP and Learfield provide a crucial step forward in supporting and empowering our student-athletes while combining three powerful brands aligned to capitalize on the dynamic opportunities within the realm of NIL." Hawai’i unveils its newly renovated Alexander Waterhouse Sports Performance Facility. The $3.3M upgrade features 24 Samson Power Racks and a new nutrition center within the 10,000-square-foot training area. Rainbow Warriors AD Craig Angelos: “The thing that stands out to me when we do a weight room is the strength and conditioning is for everybody, and it’s used more than any other facility in our athletics department. This is the one that affects everybody.” Have a look. (link)

Evansville announces a $1.2M renovation project to upgrade current intramural fields and provide opportunities for the Purple Aces soccer programs. The project will also create room for students to engage in recreational activities. Purple Aces AD Ziggy Siegfried: "We are excited to unveil this project, which was an excellent collaboration between our campus and athletics. Our goal was to bring about a positive impact to the entire community and we are confident that will be accomplished with this initiative. Following the land sale to Wesselman Woods, it was critical to find our soccer programs an area to replace what was lost and also enhance the overall experience. Knowing our entire student body can utilize the space at any time of year and any type of weather makes this accomplishment even more meaningful." (link)

The Pac-12 has begun the process of separating from Commissioner George Kliavkoff, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who notes: “Few details are available at this point, including whatever severance package might be in line for Kliavkoff. … Kliavkoff’s contract is believed to have at least two years remaining with an expected salary of approximately $3.5M annually, based on data from the Pac-12’s tax filings for the 2022 fiscal year.” Also of note: “Teresa Gould, the Pac-12’s deputy commissioner, is well respected by the schools and considered a likely option — not only as an interim commissioner through the spring but perhaps to manage a scaled-down version of the conference for the 2024-25 school year and beyond.” (link)

The College Football Playoff Board of Managers is expected to vote on a 5+7 model on February 20, ESPN’s Heather Dinich reports. Washington State President Kirk Schulz, who represents the Pac-12 on the board, tells Dinich: "I believe there's a sense of, 'We're hearing you guys out like you asked for, the legal stuff has been largely settled in the Pac-12 Conference. It's time to move forward.’” Dinich also notes Schulz spoke favorably of the 5+7 model but cautioned against making any assumptions. Mississippi State President/Board Chair Mark Keenum tells Dinich he anticipates the matter will be resolved one way or another: "I think it's a forgone conclusion from people in your profession, and where I sit and all across the college football landscape that there's an anticipation we'll have the 5+7. … I hope we as a board can come to a resolution on this issue, for sure." Meanwhile, Schulz tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger he will formally present a proposal to CFP leaders next week requesting the Pac-12 be treated as a power conference in both revenue and voting rights for the extended future. Schulz: “We’ve been an Autonomy Five school and have resourced ourselves at that level for 25-30 years. Just because we were left standing in musical chairs, we just don’t feel that we should be relegated by no fault of our own.” Schulz also says he views the revenue distribution discussion as separate from the 5+7 format discussion: "We've got to be a good colleague in the college football world. … We have to be really careful about saying, 'If you don't give us exactly what we've asked for, we're going to hold up some other things.'” More from Dinich (link) and Dellenger. The Pac-12’s FY23 financial statement is expected to show campus distributions of about $36M when it’s released this spring, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner’s estimates, although he notes distributions to campuses aren’t identical because of “various withholdings that change from year to year.” The figures can also vary based on which document is made public between the NCAA agreed-upon-procedures report; the NCAA statements of revenue and expenses; or the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act filing. For instance, Cal’s FY23 statement of revenue shows media rights accounted for $25.5M, NCAA distributions for $2.7M and conference distributions for $6M, bringing the total to $34.2M. Utah’s includes the same categories but with different amounts for a total of $38.1M. Instead of a statement of revenue, Washington State uses the NCAA agreed-upon-procedures report, which includes $25.5M in media rights revenue, $1.6M in NCAA distributions and $8.8M in conference distributions for a total of $35.9M. Altogether, those totals average out to $36.1M. (link)

The Pac-12 has countersued the Holiday Bowl over a $3.4M payment the league says it was owed for the game in December 2022. The countersuit comes roughly eight months after the Holiday Bowl first sued the Pac-12 seeking reimbursement from the league after the game in 2021 was canceled due to COVID issues among UCLA players. From the Pac-12’s suit: “Holiday Bowl has breached the Agreement by failing and refusing to make any payment to Cross-Complainant in connection with the 2020 Holiday Bowl Game. Holiday Bowl’s breach is not justified or excused. As a result of Holiday Bowl’s breach of the Agreement, Cross-Complainant has been damaged in an amount to be determined.” (link)

Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson comments on the reported six-year, $7.8B College Football Playoff media rights extension with ESPN: “Seems light to me. Let's say the four first-round games next season are worth $15M each or $60M. Add that to year 11 of the current deal (on the reported $685M/yr average deal) and you are at around $895M in year 11 and $935M in year 12. Discount the $1.3B average on the new 6-year deal back to year 1 and you are at $1.16B. So, an increase of only 25% coming from last year of a stale 12-year deal to year 1 of a new deal? Maybe no other bidders.” (link); Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes also weighs in: “ESPN's strategic investment in college sports & the small amount of game inventory (11 total) made them the only potential partner who could fully monetize Expanded CFP on an obvious rational basis...Particularly in the context of the emerging low growth media economy which is forcing sports media rights investors to be highly deliberate in strategic capital allocation, as we've seen now for over two years.” Crakes adds: “Optionality via sub-licensing discretion is crucial as it enables, at ESPN's discretion, larger content negotiations with potential distribution partners. Securing it was strategic & suggests ESPN always had best offer on the table for ECFP. Not surprising.” (link, link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte introduced several initiatives to upgrade DKR-Memorial Stadium during a campus town hall yesterday. He also announced the Longhorns will begin construction on the new football practice facility, originally announced in April 2023, this summer: “The project will start this June and we really needed to address our football practice facility. We have a bubble that was built in the early 2000’s, but our student athletes have to leave the stadium and walk a little under 800 yards. That’s not conducive to time management. When the social work building became available, I met with President [Jay] Hartzell and asked if we could participate in this new venture to have that area, so we’ll have a brand new indoor and outdoor field.” At DKR-Memorial Stadium itself, Del Conte explained: “We’re going to address the scoreboard. It was time to get that done and, to be honest, it’s kind of a mess, so we’ll have the new scoreboard ready to go this summer and it is going to be backlit with a whole new metal structure that when you see it and (teams) from the Southeastern Conference walk in, they’re going to know they’re in DKR-Memorial Stadium. We just finished part of our brand-new recruiting lounge, we just opened that up now.” UT also plans to install a new grass playing surface in the stadium by 2026, and is looking into constructing a 5K-seat “mini-Moody” for volleyball. Aside from facilities, Del Conte announced that Texas will play Texas A&M annually in football, and his hope “is to move it back to Thursday” of Thanksgiving week. (link, link, link)

UNLV AD Erick Harper talks with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about his role on the Las Vegas Super Bowl Host Committee: “There was something every single night, every single afternoon, that you could attend, or a luncheon that you could go to. … It was just non-stop.” While UNLV wasn’t involved in an official capacity, the Rebels’ 73K-sq-ft Fertitta Football Complex received some exposure as the 49ers’ HQ. Harper: “One of the players said it reminded him of Oregon. And then one player from another school I won’t name within our conference said they need to get their stuff together at that place because it’s pretty, pretty special.” (link)

Stephen F. Austin signs a 10-year extension of its partnership with Pilgrim's Pride, solidifying Pilgrim's as the naming rights partner of the Lumberjack baseball stadium, which will now be known as Pilgrim's Park. Lumberjacks AD Ryan Ivey: "As the world in intercollegiate athletics continues to evolve around us, it is critical for us to have longstanding and steadfast partners like Pilgrim's to assist in navigating the challenges ahead. Pilgrim's, and all of our partners, are critical for the long-term sustainability and success of our student-athletes.” The agreement was facilitated by LEARFIELD’s Lumberjack Sports Properties. Campfire Film & TV is paying LSU $1M for the exclusive rights to produce The Money Game, an NIL-focused documentary series following Tiger student-athletes during the 2023-24 school year, per Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who adds: “That seven-figure remuneration, according to a copy of the deal obtained by Sportico, is separate from the ‘talent fee’ Campfire will negotiate with all participating Tigers athletes, who would be paid in the ‘form of NIL compensation.’ In a break from historical precedent, LSU employees, such as football coach Brian Kelly, will explicitly not be compensated by the production company for their participation in the series.” Given NCAA constraints, the contract, Libit continues, “includes a creatively worded exhibit titled ‘minimum athlete access requirements.’ It states that LSU will ‘mutually agree’ with Campfire on what athletes will be ‘key participants’; that the school will ‘permit’ the production company to formally interview those athletes at least once; and that LSU ‘will assist (Campfire) to cause Student Athletes to provide customary publicity/promotional services for the Series.’” Co-produced by Axios Entertainment and Shaquille O’Neal’s Jersey Legends, the docuseries will air on Amazon Prime. Nebraska could begin selling beer at baseball games as soon as mid-April, according to Huskers Executive Assoc. AD/CFO Doug Ewald. The athletic department is working through several details, including whether it would share revenue with the Lincoln Saltdogs, an independent professional team, and use their equipment or offer cans. Sponsorship agreements must be established as well. Ewald: “For us, it’s proving to our fans and proving to the Board of Regents that we can do this. We can be good stewards and do it in an orderly fashion and at the end of the day make a buck or two doing it as well.” (link)

The Big Ten and Big Ten Network have signed a multiyear renewal with TIAA as the league’s official retirement planning service sponsor. As part of the agreement, TIAA will become the naming-rights sponsor for the Big Ten men’s and women’s basketball tournaments and remain the presenting sponsor for Big Ten Basketball Media Days. Financial details have yet to be made available, and SBJ’s Ben Portnoy reports no outside agencies were involved. (link)
