Albany State AD Kristene Kelly sits down with BOSCA Founder Jim Abbott about her time leading the Golden Rams, industry challenges and more. On the issues facing her department and those like hers: “The retention of skilled coaches and staff, losing them to larger programs. […] You see a lot of people, you're losing them to larger schools with larger paydays. I'm not against that at all. I'm like, do what you need to do to take care of yourself and set yourself up for long-term financial success, but that's hard, because the playing field keeps getting spread further and further, further apart.” Kelly goes on to point to the growing operational and travel costs and scholarship limitations. On the impact for DII institutions from a DI superleague or Power 4 breakaway: “You're going to get back to that competitive imbalance, where the students who may have considered us, probably aren't going to consider us anymore and I hate to say this, unless it's a, ‘Hey, I'm not happy because I was chasing this brand and I'm not happy there, I really am better here.’ […] In terms of what happens to Division II and Division III, that's left to be said, but I think there is going to be a competitive imbalance. I think you're going to have more people going in that direction and we're going to kind of have to find our way […] we’re just going have to probably change our strategy.” More. ( link)

College football officials later this month are expected to discuss the addition of a two-minute warning, and NCAA National Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw tells The Athletic’s Chris Vannini: “With our change in the clock rules, we have a number of things that hinge on a certain period in the game, like the first down situation. If you had a definitive two-minute break, then you could flip all of your clock rules. Like today, the 10-second runoff (for penalty and injury timeouts) doesn’t kick in until one minute (left). So we think there might be some value in having a two-minute stop and then now we go to post-timing rules and make all of it contingent on the two-minute.” While a two-minute warning as a free timeout runs the risk of lengthening the game, Shaw said it could simply fill the place of an existing TV timeout and adds: “We’d really like to avoid the back-to-backs. Nobody likes that. If we did it, the media partner would have to hold their last timeout to that, so they couldn’t get their timeouts in and then get a freebie. It would be the last media timeout and give them assurance they’ll get them all in. I think TV would be supportive of it.” ( link)

Edinboro Asst. Athletic Trainer Jared Limbeck was honored by the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers Society for saving an official’s life during a Volleyball match this past fall, when the official collapsed. Limbeck: “I mean it’s kind of surreal. I mean again, you don’t wake up thinking that you’re going to have to respond to that and by no means do you think that…you don’t feel any different and, in that moment, you’re just doing what you’ve been trained to do. […] I mean I think that it is really important to just in general to have the certification, at least base level CPR and AED uses because you never know when you’re going to be put in a situation where someone has some level of emergency…at the end of the day, life is short and so you have to enjoy it and make sure that you’re doing what you love to do.” ( link)

+ After missing payroll last week, Saint Augustine’s Interim President Marcus Burgess sent a letter to staff, stating in part: “Our current financial situation, or lack thereof, has significantly hindered the operations across our campus, and I am acutely aware of the hardships it has caused. We are pursuing several opportunities around our greatest asset, our land. While we are on the brink of finalizing these transactions, the process has taken longer than anticipated.” (link, link)

The U.S. Education Department is relaxing several requirements so colleges and universities dealing with delayed student financial aid information can better focus on processing aid applications and delivering aid packages to students. Specifically, the ED says it will reduce the proportion of financial aid forms it reviews for potential inaccuracy, suspend all new reviews of colleges’ compliance with financial aid rules and offer institutions flexibility in their applications to renew their eligibility to access federal financial aid programs. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona: “We are determined to drive a constant drumbeat of action to fulfill the transformational potential of the better FAFSA. The steps we’re announcing today build on the Better FAFSA College Support Strategy by making it easier for colleges and universities to get financial aid packages to students and families as quickly as possible. We will strive to leave no stone unturned to make this FAFSA process easier and simpler for colleges, universities and students.” (link)
