Mississippi University for Women rolls out Wynbridge State University of Mississippi as its new name. President Nora Miller: “We have been challenged by a name that does not represent our diversity. The CCC and NEWMAC have inked a Football alliance that will include at least one non-conference opponent for each member each year, starting as soon as 2025, and a new postseason bowl with the “first available team from each league.” CCC Commissioner Patrick Colbert: “Today is an important day for our Conference and football in our region as this partnership emphasizes collaboration towards a common goal of providing guaranteed, high-quality regional non-conference opportunities coupled with a bowl game experience. Our membership immediately saw the value in this partnership, and I look forward to working with Executive Director Summers and his staff on continuing to collectively elevate our brands of football.” ( link)

Schreiner AD Bill Raleigh chats with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Cory Hogue about the build of the Mountaineer’s Football program that will hit the field with a JV schedule in 2025. Raleigh has received around 70 applications for the HC opening which was posted last week, with the new HC to have the full staff in place before the end of 2024. On facilities, there are “long-range plans to build an on-campus stadium in 10 years unless a generous donation is made to construct the facility,” adding: “We’re building a weight room, and we’re going to build some locker rooms. We have some infrastructure we need on campus that is our first priority, like building a field house.” Further, on funding: “We’re not going to be the most funded team. We’re a small school, but we won’t be on the bottom end of the spectrum either. We’re committed to making sure we do this as efficiently and properly as possible.” ( link)

Former Sewanee Women’s Basketball HC Brody Curry violated NCAA sports gambling rules by placing over $93K in bets over a 26-month period, including $28K on college athletics across 407 bets. The DIII Committee on Infractions writing: “Moreover, these types of behaviors have become normalized in society and, at least in this case, do not appear to have had any influence on the integrity of intercollegiate competitions or resulted in any competitive advantage. Regardless of the evolving views and prevalence of sports wagering, such activities remain against NCAA rules. Given the prevalence of sports wagering activities on college campuses, it is arguably even more important that those closest to student-athletes refrain from such behaviors to protect student-athletes and the integrity of the game. To that end, institutional educational efforts pertaining to sports wagering activities are critical.” Penalties include one year of probation, a two-year show-cause order for Curry, a $1,500 fine and two years of in-person attendance at the NCAA Regional Rules Seminars. AD Jason Lener: “Today's NIL Collective announcement, along with our MOGL partnership, is evidence that we are fully committed to providing our student-athletes with NIL opportunities that no other Presidents' Athletic Conference school is offering. + The LEC will add Women’s Ice Hockey as its 23rd sport and New England College Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey will join the league as affiliate members, both starting in 2025-26. The league will get AQ status in Men’s Hockey in 2025-265 and in Women’s Hockey in 2027-28. (link)

+ Northwestern-St.Paul will discontinue Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse after this season, “as part of an organization-wide strategic planning and structural budgeting initiative.” President Corbin Hoornbeek: “At Northwestern, we take great pride in both the quality of our athletics programs and their shared pursuit of competing with purpose. While I recognize that this decision will be difficult news for many—especially our impacted student-athletes—it is important that our university be fiscally positioned to excel amidst the current and upcoming challenges facing higher education. AD Bill Wilson: “It became very evident during the interview process that Kevin is dedicated to the development of the student-athlete as people, as students and as football players. The U.S. Education Department is relaxing several requirements so colleges and universities dealing with delayed student financial aid information can better focus on processing aid applications and delivering aid packages to students. Specifically, the ED says it will reduce the proportion of financial aid forms it reviews for potential inaccuracy, suspend all new reviews of colleges’ compliance with financial aid rules and offer institutions flexibility in their applications to renew their eligibility to access federal financial aid programs. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona: “We are determined to drive a constant drumbeat of action to fulfill the transformational potential of the better FAFSA. The steps we’re announcing today build on the Better FAFSA College Support Strategy by making it easier for colleges and universities to get financial aid packages to students and families as quickly as possible. We will strive to leave no stone unturned to make this FAFSA process easier and simpler for colleges, universities and students.” (link)
