CollegeAD indicates Sam Houston State AD Bobby Williams has inked a contract extension that could keep him in Huntsville through August of 2026 & comes with base pay of $285K, up from his previous pay rate of $233.5K. There are a slew of competitive & academic bonus opportunities, topped by $15K for going to a bowl game & $10K for making the NCAA Tournament in any sport. As for buyout terms, if Williams chooses to exit before the end of FY24, he’d owed $35K, which after that date reduces to $10K. If the university makes a move without cause, Williams would be owed one year of base pay. (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey caught up with JohnCanzano.com’s namesake on a variety of key topics. On the reduced Pac-12 still being considered as a Power 5 league in a reformatted College Football Playoff: “The reality is that we have to have a postseason system that adapts. I am not at all a fan of continuing requests from different corners for special accommodation. We have not asked for special accommodation to this point. We’ll see. It’s at the board level. It’s not to the commissioners. We’ve stated previously a view as a group. It wasn’t unanimous. But at some point, we’re going to have to adapt for the next two years. Then, we’re going to have to re-think our approach to how governance is conducted and how decisions are made if it is to work.” What about the potential for college football to breakaway from other sports? “I look at this as a holistic endeavor. Our football programs exist as part of our universities. They exist as part of our athletic programs. And maybe I’m a dinosaur but I actually think we should remain connected as programs and as athletic programs to our university and not simply break out sports.” As for the SEC-Big Ten advisory group: “Big problems are not solved in big rooms filled with people. You have to narrow your focus a bit. There may be raised eyebrows. We certainly called in advance to communicate to colleagues what was going to be announced rather than do it in the shadows and have somebody report on it. You might as well put things out there.” Lots more, including why Sankey goes back & listens to his past interviews. (link)

The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker makes sense of the ACC’s latest push to dismiss Florida State’s legal challenge: “The Seminoles could buy back their TV rights from the conference. [...] If Florida State wishes to regain control of the rights before the end of the term, it could attempt to repurchase them. But having to buy back a right which was assigned is not a penalty; it is simply a commercial possibility. A commercial possibility that had not been raised previously in the dueling lawsuits. A price was not specified but, like everything in this legal fight, is subject to negotiation.” (link)

Labor law expert Eddie Bonett, who spent 22 years in the Philadelphia NLRB office, joins Optimum Sports to talk about what happens next in the Dartmouth case and explains the right-to-control test used by the board “may open things to others who are controlled by universities, people like theater majors, who have to put on a show and the university controls their hours. … It may cause them to look for some other test that tightens this up a little bit. Simply using this test, you could take this down to big high school programs – big high school football and big high school basketball schools.” If the current decision is upheld, Bonett notes Dartmouth could refuse to bargain and do a test of cert. “That would go to the district courts, and maybe even up to the Supreme Court. Then, whatever the court says is going to be the guidance for the future. The Board decision would be precedential across board cases. A university would probably try to distinguish this, in terms of the control, but any similar programs are going to run into the same issues. Now, you may have a D3 school that tries it, and they won’t have the same level of control, so maybe that’s a case where the student athletes are not employees under this decision.” More from Bonett. Baseball’s first pitch went down yesterday across the nation & The Athletic’s Mitch Light catches up with 11 Baseball HCs to gather their feedback on NIL and the transfer portal. Wake Forest HC Tom Walter on how NIL is affecting the sport: “I hate it for the mid-majors. I came up as a mid-major coach who had some success at a lower level and then moved up to the next level and then had success there and then moved into the ACC. And it’s really hard for mid-major coaches to do that now because it’s almost to the point where they become a little too much like junior colleges, where they’re coming in developing guys and then they’re losing those guys as sophomores or juniors. So I don’t like that part of it. I do like that teams can use NIL opportunities to keep kids out of the draft. … And we have 11.7 scholarships for a 40-man roster — we are woefully underfunded as a sport. So I do like that we can help our guys mitigate those costs with NIL opportunities.” All the coaches agreed the transfer portal has made a major impact on the game, and Mercer HC Craig Gibson goes as far as to say it’s “absolutely destroyed the college game. And I say that because three years ago, my shortstop leads the SEC in home runs, RJ Yeager at Mississippi State. Last year, my first baseman Angelo DiSpigna is all-conference in the ACC (at Georgia Tech).” Gibson also says of NIL: “It’s absolutely destroyed amateur athletics. And I’m not against athletes being compensated by any means, but I don’t think it’s turned out to be what it was intended to be.” Lots more. (link)

East Carolina Baseball student-athlete Parker Byrd became the first person to play the sport at the Division I level with a prosthetic leg. Byrd, who lost his right leg in a boating accident two years ago, endured more than 20 surgeries in a 45-day period following the injury. He reached base on a walk and said this after the game: “I mean chill bumps man, it's absolutely phenomenal. This crowd, these fans, these people, my family, my teammates, coaches I really could not be more thankful and blessed.” (link)

Renaissance Search & Consulting founder Herb Courtney gets the profile treatment from The Athletic’s Tashan Reed. Courtney, who started the business in 2020 to remedy the lack of diversity he saw in both business recruiting and athletics, believes “A lot of times, there’s a lot of great candidates out there that don’t have access. I wanted to bring a positive change to industries that traditionally have excluded a lot of people. And so, that was our purpose.” On being one of the only black-owned search firms, Courtney: “It really hasn’t been done in terms of being commonplace, and so I don’t take that lightly. At the end of the day, access and equity are important, and I think that’s what most organizations want in a search. They do want the best people. That’s what we’re about.” More. (link)

As college athletics wonders how private equity could reshape the industry, the NFL’s special ownership committee, which includes Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, Falcons owner Arthur Blank, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and Panthers owner David Tepper, is having an “expansive discussion about tactics to make the ownership market more liquid, diversify ownership and push valuations higher,” SBJ’s Ben Fischer reports. Whether those tactics include allowing private equity firms to buy a certain percentage of a certain number of teams, however, remains an open question. Fischer explains: “There are kinds of funds interested in the NFL that weren’t that concerned with the other leagues, raising new possibilities. Even within ‘private equity,’ it’s possible the NFL could prioritize single-use funds that would need to be created de novo rather than general funds that would be ready to buy LP stakes right away. Another concept floated was a league wide fund, with institutional investors, that could be tapped by teams in need of liquidity. Separately, the committee is also looking at making it easier for natural persons, including raising the acquisition debt limit above $1.2B; lowering the equity required by principal owners below 30%, or increasing the cap on investors above 25. Those are easier questions and could happen quickly.” One source tells Fischer: “Anybody who says they know where this going before the March committee meetings is probably wrong.” (link)

The Pac-12 and Commissioner George Kliavkoff have “mutually agreed to part ways,” effective February 29, according to a statement from the conference. NC State AD Boo Corrigan inks an extension through June 2029. Chancellor Randy Woodson: "Under Boo's outstanding leadership, NC State Athletics is experiencing new levels of competitive, academic and financial success. We are fortunate to have such an experienced and well-respected leader to help us navigate through the ever-changing landscape of college athletics." Financial terms of the extension have yet to be made available. (link); CollegeAD reports Corrigan’s base salary will start at $713,125 and increase $50K each year. Additionally, Corrigan will receive $700K as part of a supplemental package, which will also increase by $50K each year. He is also eligible to receive up to $300K in bonuses and would be owed the remaining base pay due to him for the remainder of the contract if he is let go without cause. Should Corrigan leave for another DI AD post, he would owe the university 50% of his current base salary times the number of years left on his contract. (link)

Louisiana Tech was set to begin interviewing AD candidates this week, and President Jim Henderson says: “We hope to announce the new AD the last week of February. That’s our timeline and it is very aggressive. But your timelines are flexible. Finding the right person is non-negotiable. That’s what we’re going to do.” Henderson also notes school leaders have met with constituents from on and off campus, including fans and alumni. “We had a number of conversations with fans and alumni that have an interest. And to their credit, they have said, ‘you know, I don’t want to get into the business, but kind of tell me what where we’re going and what you think.’ And, and all of them seemed to support this idea that we can compete with any like institutions.” Meanwhile, Henderson acknowledges Tech’s budget challenges may cause a slight change to the definition of success for the next AD: “If we can get an athletic director who is going to give us at least five to six years, and if they want to lead, they leave better than they found it, that’s going to be the real success. And I think most fans would be thoroughly satisfied with it.“ More. (link)

The NCAA has begun its RFP process following last month’s adoption of NIL transparency and consumer protection measures, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who notes the NCAA is now accepting bids for its agent registry, disclosure database and education program. The deadline to submit proposals is next Friday with a decision expected by the end of March. Nakos adds: “The registration of NIL service providers will include agents, financial advisors and others who support college athletes in NIL arrangements. Completely voluntarily, information sent to the NCAA would be published in a registry for athletes to access. In the registry, athletes could review their experiences with those service providers. In a previous statement, the DI council said it would be similar to a ‘rate my professor’ platform. (link)

Western Carolina AD/Women’s Basketball Selection Committee member Alex Gary joins Southern Conference Assoc. Commissioner for Brand Strategy and Broadcast Dave Friedman to discuss the latest updates from the committee’s meetings. Gary explains the process of selecting officials for the tournament has left him confident in the those who are chosen: “Officials are evaluated, they’re graded, they try to eliminate any sort of conflicts when it comes to officials going to certain schools and officiating those games and being from certain areas and officiating those games. There's a lot that goes into it, so I was really happy to see all of the oversight associated with officiating.” Asked what teams and leagues can do to differentiate themselves from one another once conference play starts, Gary says: “You’ve certainly got to win games, but also it’s how you win. I know when we were evaluating a couple of teams for top 16 consideration, when you look at how they're winning the games, it’s not just that they’re winning games, but they're beating teams by double digits repeatedly. They’re winning games on the road, they're winning games at home. I think that how you look and that eye test that we talked about a little bit in our last conversation is extremely important.” Full interview. (link)

During its February 12 meeting, the Committee for Legislative Relief reviewed the previously approved waiver for postgraduate transfer participation and removed the limitation only allowing it to be used once by a postgraduate transfer student-athlete. The committee also removed the required written statement from the previous institution, explaining that the “removal of the written statement from the previous institution does not remove the previously approved waiver requirement that a student-athlete must have left the previous institution in good standing (i.e., not under disciplinary suspension). The committee noted that this information is available on the transfer tracer, therefore, a written statement from the previous institution is not necessary.” Also, the committee received an update on the use of the previously approved waiver checklist for official visit transportation expenses to a prospective student-athlete’s siblings. The committee amended the previously approved waiver checklist to encompass all official visit expenses (i.e., transportation, meals, lodging, entertainment) to a prospective student-athlete’s parents, legal guardians and legal minor aged siblings (i.e., under 18 years old). Full rundown. (link)

A bill in Oregon that would prohibit the NCAA, conferences and any other athletics governing body from punishing an athlete or school for violating NIL rules is headed to the House floor. The bill also provides liability protection for universities and their employees “for any damages to a student athlete’s ability to exercise the student athlete’s (NIL) rights due to any decision or action” by the school or any of its employees that is “routinely taken in the course of intercollegiate sports” or is “part of identifying, facilitating, enabling or supporting opportunities for the current student athlete to exercise the student athlete’s” NIL rights at the school. Representative Zach Hudson (D-Troutdale) offers a hypothetical scenario: “Let’s say a student is making money off of [an NIL] deal. Let’s say that student has some accusation against them and the college kicks them off a team — let’s say for a weapons charge or something. It turns out that that charge was false. It turns out that the college should have known it was false and didn’t do their due diligence to make sure it was a legitimate complaint. But the student has still lost tens of thousands of dollars from the actions of the college. If the student were to sue the college for what they did in that scenario, would a judge dismiss that case based on what’s in the bill?” That scenario will likely be the subject of debate on the House floor. Oregon, Oregon State, Portland and several other universities in the state have voiced support for the bill. (link)

Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint reports Fox will develop the platform and tech for the new sports streamer, which “will be based on News Corp.'s Australian sports platform Kayo Sports. (link); Hulu Sports has made the short list of possible names for the ESPN-Fox-Warner Bros. Discovery sports super streamer, and The Desk’s Matthew Keys notes the Hulu Sports name is favored because “executives feel the Hulu brand name is already familiar with consumers who have ditched cable and satellite for streaming services.” Awful Announcing’s Joe Lucia adds: “The joint venture existing as Hulu Sports also could allow for an easy tiered experience in the Hulu app. You could go with the streaming option with no live content, Hulu Sports with all the sports content (and maybe library content outside of ESPN+?), or Hulu Live TV, with everything in the previous two tiers. Hulu also lets you tack additional subscriptions onto your plan, which could allow for easier bundling with Disney+ or Max. I’m also curious if using the Hulu Sports brand could hold off attention from federal regulators. Instead of being a whole new brand, the joint venture could be looked at as a new tier of an existing brand.” (link)

Paramount Global and Comcast have engaged in recent talks about “joining forces in streaming through a partnership or joint venture, among several potential strategic options the entertainment company is pursuing, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Toonkel and Amol Sharma, who add: “A weaker-than-expected ad market and continued declines in pay-TV subscribers have pushed Paramount to aggressively cut costs to meet its promise to investors that it will deliver positive earnings growth in 2024. This week, the company cut around 800 jobs, or 3% of its workforce. … Bringing the two streaming apps under one roof could produce significant cost savings—from spending on programming to marketing—and create a more in-depth offering for consumers, especially with regard to live sports. A commercial partnership or joint venture are among the arrangements the companies could pursue.” (link)
