The latest from Arizona President Robert Robbins on what the Wildcats need in a new AD: “We’ve got to get the right leader in our athletic department. Someone who has experience, preferably a national figure who’s going to be a leader, who can come in and solve these problems and navigate our change from, sadly, the demise of the Pac-12 into the Big 12.” Meanwhile, the Arizona Republic’s Greg Moore argues Arizona needs to hire a new AD who is forward thinking on NIL: “Robbins’ next athletic director needs to consider player endorsement deals as an opportunity instead of as an obstacle. If players can get paid by a car dealership, for example, that dealership should be prepared to promote the partnership, something that should help UA reduce its advertising costs. [...] If I were making the hire, I’d be looking for someone with a proven record of successful big ideas. I’d look for someone who could strike a balance that allows the business community to pay and promote athletes, while individual donors continue to boost the athletic department.” More. (link)

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver points to developments around NIL as one reason the league is reassessing what to do with its G League Ignite team going forward: “...now some of those same players who didn't want to be one-and-done players because they felt it was unfair and they wanted the ability not just to earn a living playing basketball but to do commercial deals that weren't available to them at college, to hire professional agents, an opportunity that wasn't available to them at college, they now -- all of those same opportunities have become available to them. [...] I think that now we've begun discussions with the NCAA, the vast majority of the top players will play in college and never play in the NBA, of course, so we have a common interest in just improving the game, developing players.” (link)

The Men’s Basketball NCAA Tournament Selection Committee’s bracket preview placed Purdue as the No. 1 overall seed, with defending champion Connecticut the overall No. 2 seed. While the Huskies are ranked No. 1 in this week’s Associated Press poll, the Boilermakers earned the edge because of better metrics across the board, nine Quadrant 1 wins and 15 Quadrant 1 and 2 wins, both tops in the country. Houston and Arizona rounded out the top seeds, while North Carolina, Tennessee, Marquette and Kansas were 2-seeds; Alabama, Baylor, Iowa State and Duke were 3-seeds; and Auburn, San Diego State, Illinois and Wisconsin were the 4-seeds. SWAC Commissioner/Committee Chair Charles McClelland said Dayton, Creighton and Clemson were in discussion for the final spots in the group of 16, as well. All four 1-seeds in last year's mock-bracket reveal ended up as 1-seeds in the bracket on Selection Sunday. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines the logistics of Kansas playing its home football games in two stadiums next year and points out that Children’s Mercy Park, the home of Sporting KC, has a capacity of just 20K. As such, Jayhawks Deputy AD for External Affairs and Revenue Generation Jason Booker says the school won’t sell any single-game tickets to the two matchups scheduled there (Lindenwood and UNLV) but will reserve seats for students and season ticket holders. Booker tells Brown KU plans to work with several groups on campus to help facilitate travel and make sure students can easily get to the games. Additionally, the school plans to work with local businesses in Lawrence to find ways to help them be involved in game days. Along with the challenges come opportunities, particularly as they relate to revenue generation from in-stadium signage, as Booker explains: “One of the tricky things about the old version of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium is that we actually didn’t have a ton of great inventory for partners,” which is something the school plans to address with the renovations. “Playing these games at the other stadiums actually gives us better inventory.” Meanwhile, Booker says KU was able to send EA Sports renderings of what the stadium should look like after the renovations are completed to be used in the upcoming video game. It is always a great day to be a Gov and I am so excited to further our partnership with Connect!” (link)

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd does a final analysis of the 2023 college football season, notes that scoring across the FBS was down for a third straight year, something that has not happened since the NCAA started tracking stats in 1937. Digging deeper, Dodd explains that average scoring was down to 27.78 points per team, the lowest mark since 2009; total offense was down for the fifth straight year (385.70 yards), the lowest since 2010; average yards passing (229.55) were the lowest since 2010; average yards rushing (156.15) the lowest since 2009; and average touchdowns per game (3.47) the lowest since 2008. Dodd explains his reasoning behind the drops: “The new first-down rule eliminated a handful of plays from the game [approximately 4.5 plays/game according to NCAA Secretary Rules Editor Steve Shaw]; elite defensive linemen have become more important because, for the most part, offensive linemen are losing that battle in the trenches; and defenses are simply getting smarter and more varied.” (link)

@1QLeadership Question: Is a Division I athletics director job always the goal? 1Q guest host Dr. Monique Carroll of Chicago State asks Point University VP of Intercollegiate Athletics, Jaunelle White, about leading the athletics department at an NAIA institution after a career of working in NCAA D1.

JohnWallStreet is skeptical the ESPN-Fox-Warner Bros. Discovery sports bundle will have the impact on the industry that others are projecting. E.W. Scripps President/CEO Adam Symson agrees and remarks: “I’m not sure why there’s been this incredible overreaction [to the announcement]. As long as these networks follow rules around antitrust and collusion, which I’m sure they will, it’s [just] another virtual MVPD in an already very crowded entertainment marketplace. … This joint venture is not going to be bidding for rights. Nor does [it] materially change the amount that the [three] networks can afford to [each individually] bid against big tech for the rights.” Symson also contends that “without broadcast and local affiliates to actually underwrite the acquisition of sports rights, D2C [streaming doesn’t] make sense at all. That's why you've seen Netflix be smart about moving into sports.” A “top Disney executive” has assured Symson that broadcast affiliates will get carried along with the service, and that the station groups will be compensated, as they are with existing vMVPD partners, for that carriage. “The intention is for the exact same arrangement. Each company [will maintain] an arm's length negotiation with this product for the distribution of its signals, and for the local station to be the [affiliate] that [the subscriber] would receive [OTA] locally.” More from JWS. Apple in 2016 or 2017 approached ESPN about creating an aggregated sports broadcast platform that they would house, according to former ESPN President John Skipper, who says: “Apple at one point attempted to create this bundle, and they couldn’t do it because they couldn’t accept that they would have to pay the same prices that Comcast paid. It’s a good idea to be the person to aggregate sports.” At that point, Skipper explains ESPN was far more concerned about the revenue they generated from linear TV while Apple ultimately pivoted to signing their own rights deals. CollegeAD indicates Sam Houston State AD Bobby Williams has inked a contract extension that could keep him in Huntsville through August of 2026 & comes with base pay of $285K, up from his previous pay rate of $233.5K. There are a slew of competitive & academic bonus opportunities, topped by $15K for going to a bowl game & $10K for making the NCAA Tournament in any sport. As for buyout terms, if Williams chooses to exit before the end of FY24, he’d owed $35K, which after that date reduces to $10K. If the university makes a move without cause, Williams would be owed one year of base pay. (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey caught up with JohnCanzano.com’s namesake on a variety of key topics. On the reduced Pac-12 still being considered as a Power 5 league in a reformatted College Football Playoff: “The reality is that we have to have a postseason system that adapts. I am not at all a fan of continuing requests from different corners for special accommodation. We have not asked for special accommodation to this point. We’ll see. It’s at the board level. It’s not to the commissioners. We’ve stated previously a view as a group. It wasn’t unanimous. But at some point, we’re going to have to adapt for the next two years. Then, we’re going to have to re-think our approach to how governance is conducted and how decisions are made if it is to work.” What about the potential for college football to breakaway from other sports? “I look at this as a holistic endeavor. Our football programs exist as part of our universities. They exist as part of our athletic programs. And maybe I’m a dinosaur but I actually think we should remain connected as programs and as athletic programs to our university and not simply break out sports.” As for the SEC-Big Ten advisory group: “Big problems are not solved in big rooms filled with people. You have to narrow your focus a bit. There may be raised eyebrows. We certainly called in advance to communicate to colleagues what was going to be announced rather than do it in the shadows and have somebody report on it. You might as well put things out there.” Lots more, including why Sankey goes back & listens to his past interviews. (link)

The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker makes sense of the ACC’s latest push to dismiss Florida State’s legal challenge: “The Seminoles could buy back their TV rights from the conference. [...] If Florida State wishes to regain control of the rights before the end of the term, it could attempt to repurchase them. But having to buy back a right which was assigned is not a penalty; it is simply a commercial possibility. A commercial possibility that had not been raised previously in the dueling lawsuits. A price was not specified but, like everything in this legal fight, is subject to negotiation.” (link)

Labor law expert Eddie Bonett, who spent 22 years in the Philadelphia NLRB office, joins Optimum Sports to talk about what happens next in the Dartmouth case and explains the right-to-control test used by the board “may open things to others who are controlled by universities, people like theater majors, who have to put on a show and the university controls their hours. … It may cause them to look for some other test that tightens this up a little bit. Simply using this test, you could take this down to big high school programs – big high school football and big high school basketball schools.” If the current decision is upheld, Bonett notes Dartmouth could refuse to bargain and do a test of cert. “That would go to the district courts, and maybe even up to the Supreme Court. Then, whatever the court says is going to be the guidance for the future. The Board decision would be precedential across board cases. A university would probably try to distinguish this, in terms of the control, but any similar programs are going to run into the same issues. Now, you may have a D3 school that tries it, and they won’t have the same level of control, so maybe that’s a case where the student athletes are not employees under this decision.” More from Bonett. Baseball’s first pitch went down yesterday across the nation & The Athletic’s Mitch Light catches up with 11 Baseball HCs to gather their feedback on NIL and the transfer portal. Wake Forest HC Tom Walter on how NIL is affecting the sport: “I hate it for the mid-majors. I came up as a mid-major coach who had some success at a lower level and then moved up to the next level and then had success there and then moved into the ACC. And it’s really hard for mid-major coaches to do that now because it’s almost to the point where they become a little too much like junior colleges, where they’re coming in developing guys and then they’re losing those guys as sophomores or juniors. So I don’t like that part of it. I do like that teams can use NIL opportunities to keep kids out of the draft. … And we have 11.7 scholarships for a 40-man roster — we are woefully underfunded as a sport. So I do like that we can help our guys mitigate those costs with NIL opportunities.” All the coaches agreed the transfer portal has made a major impact on the game, and Mercer HC Craig Gibson goes as far as to say it’s “absolutely destroyed the college game. And I say that because three years ago, my shortstop leads the SEC in home runs, RJ Yeager at Mississippi State. Last year, my first baseman Angelo DiSpigna is all-conference in the ACC (at Georgia Tech).” Gibson also says of NIL: “It’s absolutely destroyed amateur athletics. And I’m not against athletes being compensated by any means, but I don’t think it’s turned out to be what it was intended to be.” Lots more. (link)

East Carolina Baseball student-athlete Parker Byrd became the first person to play the sport at the Division I level with a prosthetic leg. Byrd, who lost his right leg in a boating accident two years ago, endured more than 20 surgeries in a 45-day period following the injury. He reached base on a walk and said this after the game: “I mean chill bumps man, it's absolutely phenomenal. This crowd, these fans, these people, my family, my teammates, coaches I really could not be more thankful and blessed.” (link)

Renaissance Search & Consulting founder Herb Courtney gets the profile treatment from The Athletic’s Tashan Reed. Courtney, who started the business in 2020 to remedy the lack of diversity he saw in both business recruiting and athletics, believes “A lot of times, there’s a lot of great candidates out there that don’t have access. I wanted to bring a positive change to industries that traditionally have excluded a lot of people. And so, that was our purpose.” On being one of the only black-owned search firms, Courtney: “It really hasn’t been done in terms of being commonplace, and so I don’t take that lightly. At the end of the day, access and equity are important, and I think that’s what most organizations want in a search. They do want the best people. That’s what we’re about.” More. (link)

As college athletics wonders how private equity could reshape the industry, the NFL’s special ownership committee, which includes Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, Falcons owner Arthur Blank, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and Panthers owner David Tepper, is having an “expansive discussion about tactics to make the ownership market more liquid, diversify ownership and push valuations higher,” SBJ’s Ben Fischer reports. Whether those tactics include allowing private equity firms to buy a certain percentage of a certain number of teams, however, remains an open question. Fischer explains: “There are kinds of funds interested in the NFL that weren’t that concerned with the other leagues, raising new possibilities. Even within ‘private equity,’ it’s possible the NFL could prioritize single-use funds that would need to be created de novo rather than general funds that would be ready to buy LP stakes right away. Another concept floated was a league wide fund, with institutional investors, that could be tapped by teams in need of liquidity. Separately, the committee is also looking at making it easier for natural persons, including raising the acquisition debt limit above $1.2B; lowering the equity required by principal owners below 30%, or increasing the cap on investors above 25. Those are easier questions and could happen quickly.” One source tells Fischer: “Anybody who says they know where this going before the March committee meetings is probably wrong.” (link)
