Congratulations to Iowa women’s basketball student-athlete Caitlin Clark on setting the NCAA women’s basketball all-time scoring record. Here’s the shot (from the logo, of course) that broke the record (link) and the Carver-Hawkeye Arena crowd hitting 116 decibels in celebration. (link); Clark: “I’m just thankful more than anything else. I will just be proud, proud of the way I worked for this more than anything.” The Athletic’s Ben Pickman notes that “although Clark has now set the NCAA record, she has yet to break Lynette Woodard’s women’s college basketball career scoring record of 3,649 points, set at Kansas in 1981 in the AIAW era. If Clark maintains her current scoring average, of 32.1 points per game, she’ll likely pass Woodard by the start of the Big Ten tournament in early March. Though it wouldn’t appear in the record book, Clark could pass Pete Maravich’s all-time NCAA scoring record — men’s or women’s — of 3,667 points before the season ends.” (link); Vivid Seats saw a 68% jump in the overnight listed ticket price for last night’s game, per Sportico, which notes the average sold ticket price for the game was $270 as of Thursday. “This game was the best-selling women’s basketball ticket ever on StubHub.” (link)

ESPN could pull its six-year, $7.8B deal with the College Football Playoff if the “CFP organizational body doesn’t get its act together,” according to Puck’s John Ourand, who cites the ongoing uncertainty with the Pac-12 and Washington State and Oregon State, the SEC and Big Ten “continually levitating above the NCAA to become their own veritable semiprofessional leagues” and other issues that ESPN wants to see resolved. “The playoff committee needs to figure out how to placate the conferences, ensure that the larger format is more inclusive, and allow everyone (the conferences, the schools, and their broadcast partner, chief among them) to make enough money so that they play nice—at least for now. Nothing happens quickly in college athletics, but the committee better not assume that ESPN will wait around. I’m hearing that the network will not only be spending a lot more on NBA rights, but also that its executives have prioritized maintaining UFC rights, too. … [ESPN Chairman] Jimmy Pitaro is also looking at MLB rights. All in all, that’s a lot of cash outlay, and the CFP would be wise to accept the deal quickly while it has a bird in hand.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham has commissioned a working group to explore potential renovation options to the Smith Center as well as the possibility of building a new arena, according to Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes. Cunningham says that UNC is constricted by the Smith Center site due to significant rock on the west side of the facility and the expense involved with addressing that issue is why the arena does not have two concourses encircling the court. In a recent interview, Cunningham noted that “we actually had a plan 10 years ago that we could have acted upon, and we didn't. This is, quite frankly, another iteration of looking at our future and saying, 'Okay, where are we today? Where do we think we need to be in the future? And what's the best path to get there?' And that includes a basketball study. The other night, we had 21,000 people with a single concourse. It was a great atmosphere, but some of the amenities and services that you'd like to provide an elite program, we just can't do that right now, because of the facility that we have. So how can we continue to make sure that we remain elite?” There is currently no timetable for the group’s work. (link)

Former Manhattan AD Marianne Reilly has accepted the AD post at Cardinal Spellman High School and says of the transition: "It's just a different vibe, it really is, it's all about the student athletes, to be at the high school level, it's really nice to just refocus about what's important about athletics." Reilly also says an investigation that found multiple Jaspers student-athletes who were ruled ineligible just after her departure in June was due to diminished staff. Specifically, Reilly contends almost everyone either quit or wanted to work remotely after COVID, leaving her to rebuild the staff. Reilly adds that she only had one other staff member with her running the department, and nobody was in charge of compliance. “I say, well we could have tried this, or we could have done that, but I went into Manhattan College saying I will always run a program with integrity, class and character, and I feel that I did." Nike will lay off 2% of its workforce, according to CEO John Donahoe, who explained in an email to employees that the layoffs will not impact the company’s stores, distribution centers, or U.S. manufacturing facilities. The Oregonian’s Matthew Kish notes that means the roughly 1,500 lost jobs “could have an outsized impact at the company’s roughly 400-acre headquarters campus near Beaverton, where it employed 11,400 last spring.” Layoffs will begin this morning and continue through next week. Donahoe: “This is a painful reality and not one that I take lightly. We are not currently performing at our best, and I ultimately hold myself and my leadership team accountable.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Fischer reports the NFL “would effectively have veto rights over the sale of On Location Experiences” if Silver Lake takes Endeavor private.” One expert tells Fischer it’s “unthinkable” that the NFL doesn’t have a change-in-control provision in the license, given the importance of controlling the Super Bowl experience. Fischer adds: “The league could both steer a deal to its preferred buyer and profit through a renegotiation of its long-term license of Super Bowl tickets, the hospitality company’s most important asset. … At one point, the NFL held a large minority stake in the hospitality company it founded, but in 2022, it converted that 32% stake to a 1.5% stake in Endeavor. It still has huge sway through the ticket license, making any sale a tripartite negotiation.” (link)

Amid talk about his future in Stillwater, Oklahoma State Men’s Basketball HC Mike Boynton tells the Tulsa World’s Bill Haisten: “They can hire Billy Donovan or Phil Jackson or the coach at Langston or whoever, but OSU success in the Big 12 will be difficult unless the program strengthens its commitment to NIL. I’m coming up on the end of my seventh season as the head coach. What have you heard about (the possibility) of any significant upgrades for the men’s basketball program in seven years?” Asked how many Big 12 schools are sufficiently committed to NIL, Boynton says: “Without naming specific schools, I’ll tell you what I know. There are at least six programs operating above $2M (on 2023-24 NIL resources) for their roster. There are three or four others that operate between $1M and $2M, and we are last. We’re barely over $500K in total expenses (committed to basketball athletes). … Tyreek Smith did not want to leave Oklahoma State. He came in my office three times and asked what we could do for him. He went to SMU. We can’t beat SMU to keep our player? Two years in a row, TCU took one of our best players (Rondel Walker and Avery Anderson).” More from Boynton. (link)

More from Boynton, who says recruiting has “never been a challenge until recruiting became not recruiting anymore. What I did to get Cade Cunningham here was way more difficult than what it takes to get players on campus now.” Boynton explains he recruited Cunningham by making sure he was in front of him more than other coaches and building a relationship. “I can’t work that hard anymore. Not when you can say here’s $500K to come spend nine months over here. ‘I like you, Coach, but I might get hurt this year, and all you’ve got is a scholarship for me, and I’ve still got to give those books back at the end of the year.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines the efforts of a working group of FCS and I-AAA ADs and campus leaders, and Stephen F. Austin AD Ryan Ivey, who co-chairs the group, tells Brown: “As college sports has grown and become more complex, our governance structure hasn’t really grown up with it. It’s very hard to get anything done quickly in the NCAA.” As discussions continue about the potential expansion of March Madness, Brown says every AD he’s spoken with believes the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments should include representatives from each DI conference. UMBC AD Brian Barrio: “Even if the top level of college basketball becomes explicitly professionalized, I’d still want everybody to be included in March Madness. So maybe it becomes a little more like the FA Cup. Well, a lot of people love the FA Cup!” Brown goes on to note that the working group seeks to position college athletics at mid-major institutions as a Social Sector Enterprise that focuses on educational outcomes rather than a business sector, and Barrio notes: “I have students on my campus right now that without athletics, would not be in college. College sports is one of the largest scholarship programs in the country. We want to protect that.” More from Brown. (link)

+ NCAA Committee on Infractions member and former U.S. Anti-Doping Agency General Counsel William Bock III has resigned from his post on the COI, citing the NCAA’s policy to allow transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports as a primary reason for his departure. Bock has served as a committee member since 2016 and was set to remain on the committee through August 2025. From Bock’s letter: “Although I may not have agreed with the wisdom of every rule in the NCAA rulebook, I believed the intent behind the NCAA’s rules was competitive fairness and protection of equal opportunities for student-athletes. This conviction has changed as I have watched the NCAA double down on regressive policies which discriminate against female student-athletes. … If I’m there in a sport integrity role when there’s massive, essentially authorized, cheating taking place and dramatically harming women — it’s just a contradiction. I just felt like I couldn’t seem to do that any longer and needed to resign with the hope that maybe [it] will cause other people to look at the issue more closely.” (link)
+ The NCAA has promoted Managing Director of Men’s Basketball Championships JoAn Scott to VP of Men’s Basketball. Scott will oversee the DI, DII and DIII NCAA championships, the NIT and the NCAA Men's College Basketball Academy. The December 7 event will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn with games slated to air in primetime. Georgia State Football HC Shawn Elliott is stepping down to take over as the run game coordinator at South Carolina. ESPN’s Matt Barrie: “Spoke with Coach Elliott at the Senior Bowl in Mobile. He told me NIL challenges and player retention at Georgia State was going to get worse in this new era. Everything is fine. Nothing to see here.” (link, link); FootballScoop’s Doug Samuels notes Elliott’s resignation “means the 2023-24 cycle is now officially tied as the most active head coaching change cycle since at least 2008. 31 total FBS head coaching changes to date. 2012 also saw 31 changes.” (link)

As football coaches bemoan the transfer portal, Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich points out their own “coaching carousel” is only exacerbating the problem. “Coaches, unlike players, have no restrictions for their own ‘transfers’ – and not even eight-figure buyout clauses have stopped them from leapfrogging at the last second. Thirty coaches have changed jobs this year, according to The Athletic – more than in any offseason in the past 12 years.” Kurt Roth, founder of the New Mexico-focused 505 Sports Venture Foundation, tells Christovich: “The coaching carousel has a profound impact on the transfer portal, as it creates a domino effect of player movement and roster changes. While many spectators and pundits blame their [team’s] perceived problems with the transfer portal on NIL activities, the ability of coaches to move around is arguably the bigger contributor to player transfers.” In fact, Christovich notes that because of the 30 coaches who have switched jobs this offseason, 2,550 scholarship players were eligible to enter the portal, not including walk-ons. The ripple effect of former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban’s departure resulted a dozen players from the Crimson Tide and a dozen players from Washington entering the portal. More from Christovich. The Texas A&M-Commerce Lion Champions Fund has reformed as the Lion Athletics Scholarship Fund, which will prioritize funding for student-athlete scholarships. Lions AD Jim Curry: "Scholarship investment is a fundamental priority when it comes to supporting our student-athletes, and there is an undeniable correlation between scholarship support and achievement in the classroom and on the playing surface. The Lion Athletics Scholarship Fund will not only provide our donors with clarity on where their gifts are being directed, but supporters will also see the direct impact of their investment on both a recurring and timeless basis." Legal Matters…
+ The U.S. Department of Justice plans to scrutinize the new ESPN-Fox-Warner Bros. Discovery sports streamer service over concerns it could harm consumers, media rivals and sports leagues. According to Bloomberg’s Todd Shields and Leah Nylen, DOJ regulators will look at terms of the joint venture once it is finalized. As of now, the companies haven’t been notified of the impending review and it may not lead to any action. (link)
+ ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that “Sheriff Dusty Gates of the Union Parish Sheriff’s Office in Farmerville, La., tells ESPN that LSU running back Trey Holly has been taken into custody on three felony charges – attempted second-degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property and illegal use of a weapon. He’s being held on a $512K bond. Gates said that Holly turned himself in today, one of three arrests today tied to a shooting on Feb. 9.” (link)
+ Daily fantasy sports pick’em operators plan to leave Florida by March 1 while they consider a court response to multiple state orders to leave, Legal Sports Report’s Mike Mazzeo reports, noting that state regulators last month sent a second round of cease and desist letters, promising no further legal action against Betr, PrizePicks and Underdog Fantasy should they leave the state by that date. Mazzeo: “Two sources told LSR that at least one of, if not all three, plan to comply. A third source said it was multiple pick’em operators, which could mean all three. A fourth source confirmed Underdog specifically will leave Florida.” (link)
